thehoodnurse.com | Torrey Dooley (Ep. 96)

from Sox and Sandals Podcast · host Emmanuel Williams

On this episode I am joined by one of the most genuine people I have come across in my lifetime. There is zero exaggeration or hyperbole in that statement either, I truly mean it. Torrey Dooley shares his incredible journey of becoming one of very few black male nurses in the United States. What's even more remarkable is that in his late 20's he made the decision to forsake the path of continuing in the only trade he's ever known, which was being a mechanic. As a husband and a father he made a very tough decision to financially take a setback for a number of years to set himself up to realize his dream, and Torrey was set to make it happen by any means necessary. At the thehoodnurse.com Torrey is on a mission to bridge the gap between the hood and the hospital. There is a lot of mistrust among the black community when it comes to the medical industry, but Torrey helps decode the medical jargon and plainly breaks what we need to know when it comes to taking care of ourselves and not getting lost in translation... Also, around 1:04:00 Torrey tells a story of an interview he did with the late great Portland Hip Hop legend Starchile. In that interview Starchile left us with a simple message that none of us should ignore... I hope you all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed being a part of it.
