Hagar's Daughter. A Story of Southern Caste Prejudice Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins Hagar's Daughter was first published serially in "The Colored American Magazine" in 1901-1902 by Pauline E. Hopkins, a prominent African-American novelist, journalist, historian, and playwright. The book was described as "a powerful narrative of love and intrigue, founded on events which happened in the exciting times immediately following the assassination of President Lincoln: a story of the Republic in the power of Southern caste prejudice toward the Negro." (From the January, 1901, issue of "The Colored American Magazine")In another of her works, the author explained the nature and purpose of her literary efforts: "But, after all, it is the simple, homely tale, unassumingly told, which cements the bond of brotherhood among all classes and all complexions. Fiction is of great value to any people as a preserver of manners and customs—religious, political and social. It is a record of growth and development from generation to generation. No one will do this for us; we must ourselves Canterbury Tales, The by Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1343 - 1400) LibriVox The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century (two of them in prose, the rest in verse). The tales, some of which are originals and others not, are contained inside a frame tale and told by a group of pilgrims on their way from Southwark to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. The themes of the tales vary, and include topics such as courtly love, treachery, and avarice. The genres also vary, and include romance, Breton lai, sermon, beast fable, and fabliau. The characters, introduced in the General Prologue of the book, tell tales of great cultural relevance. The version read here was edited by D. Laing Purves (1838-1873) “for popular perusal” and the language is mostly updated.(Summary by Wikipedia/Gesine) WRIGHTALES Fairy Tales for Grown Ups Lisa Wright In this podiobook: Wrightales are original fairy tales for grownups who have never quite grown up written and read by Lisa Wright. Though they follow the conventions of traditional tales, they have more humor than the Brothers Grimm, fewer princesses than Disney, and a lot less gore than Angela Carter. Wrightales take on eternal conundrums like: how to avoid ending up in the middle of nowhere, discovering the Secret to Happiness, and the search for a life that doesn't involve goats. They take a whimsical, once-upon-a-time view of life's quandaries and travails. The search for happiness and fulfillment is explored with humor and imagination. There are wizards and dragons, wild geese and small white dogs, magic and trickery, and all varieties of love. This collection brings together nine fairy tales in 16 chapters. All but one of the stories are complete in one or 2 episodes. The fairy tale tradition is alive and well and not just for kids, though kids are welcome, too.
