La Resistencia Pacífica La Puya surgió en 2012 ante la llegada del proyecto Progreso VII Derivada – Mina El Tambor, propiedad de la empresa Exploraciones Mineras de Guatemala, S.A. (EXMINGUA), ubicado entre los municipios de San José del Golfo y San Pedro Ayampuc. Durante 5 años ha librado una lucha por defender la naturaleza de un proyecto que amenaza la salud de sus habitantes, sobre todo por que el proyecto nunca se consultó con ninguna de las comunidades. Desde el 2 de marzo de 2016 se instaló una extensión de la Resistencia frente al Ministerio de Energía y Minas para presionar al Gobierno que acate la resolución de la Corte Suprema de Justicia Organismo Judicial de Guatemala que ordena suspender temporalmente los trabajos de la mina.
