We’re back for part two of the artist talks from EC3’s Downtown Artists in Residence Project: On Hospitality.  Six local artists were selected to take part in the residency and were invited to contemplate the theme of hospitality. A cross-cultural value, hospitality can be expressed, understood, and interpreted in diverse ways. The Indigenous, settler, and newcomer artists taking part shared their unique perspectives on the subject as well as their diverse artistic practices. An exhibition, performance works, and public engagement activities, created in response to these collective investigations were delivered throughout Artsweek 2018. Featuring Brad Brackenridge, Kelly O’Neill, Nick Ferrio, Rodney Fuentes, Mayelin Lovet, and Alice Williams. The Electric City Culturecast is your window into arts, culture and heritage in Peterborough. Meet local artists, get to know the people working behind the scenes in some of the premiere arts and heritage organizations in the province, and get involved in the cultural issues of the day. New Visions/Old Land PIP Projects Highlights from Trent Radio’s live broadcast from Hunter Street on July 1 during the day-long street festival celebrating arts and culture in Peterborough. Electric City Culture Council and Artspace invited media artists to create a silent film with the theme of “recasting the past and inventing alternative futures.” Musicians and sound artists accompanied these films, and they performed live on the street while the films were screened nearby. Morgan Freeman Academy of Achievement One of the most gifted and admired actors in America, Morgan Freeman was born in Memphis and raised in Mississippi. At an early age, he found his calling acting in school plays. In the seventh grade, he won the state championship in a student theatrical competition. In his teens he was appearing on Nashville radio. He turned down a college scholarship to join the Air Force; on leaving the service in 1959, he headed to Hollywood, where he auditioned unsuccessfully for eight impoverished years. He moved to New York City, and was finally offered a part in an Off-Broadway production about the Freedom Riders of the civil rights era. He later won a role in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly! with Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway. A regular role as Easy Reader on public television's The Electric Company made him a familiar figure to younger audiences, and led to film roles, including his breakout performance in Street Smart (1987).
