    2026Day14 - Shaped by culture【

Many users from the US joined Xiaohongshu in January, and Chinese users jokingly asked them to pay a “cat tax ” by sharing a photo of their cats. In return, Chinese users would send the pictures of their own cats. After looking at hundreds of cat photos, some people noticed something interesting: The cats posted by Chinese users were rounder than those shared by American users. But why? According to the website Furrbby, one key reason is the living environment. In China, many families live in high-rise apartments. To keep their cats safe, owners usually keep them indoors. However, many American homes have larger living spaces and backyards, so cats can climb and play here and there. Cultural differences may also play a role, reported Inf News. In Chinese culture, roundness means unity and perfection, while Americans value an adventurous spirit. So they encourage their pets to run around and stay active. Family influence is another reason. “My parents always show their love by making delicious food for me, so I treat my cat the same way,” explained a Chinese user from Heilongjiang. The difference in cat body shapes between China and the US reflects cultural differences between the two countries. Whether they are a fit American cat or a round Chinese cat, as long as they are healthy, that’s what matters most. 1. jokingly:adv. 税3. in return  :作为回报4. notice : v. 反映14. as long as :只要15. matter:v. 1.A  2.B  3.B  4.A  5.D别忘了点击跟读版录音进行练习。

    2026Day10 - How are your eggs?【精读】

10 How are your eggs? What’s the best way to boil an egg? Scientists in Italy think the answer is “periodic cooking”. In cooking, we often talk about two parts of the egg. One is the yolk and the other is the egg white. They have different nutrients and need different temperatures for cooking. So, it is difficult to cook both parts just right once and for all. Scientists first ran tests on a computer. They found that changing the water from hot to warm again and again was a good way. It may help the yolk and egg white reach their perfect temperatures at different times. Then, the scientists tried the new way on real eggs. They put the eggs in boiling water (100 ℃), and moved them to 30 ℃ water every two minutes. They kept doing this for 32 minutes, and then cooled the eggs under running water. The eggs tasted wonderful. The egg white was very soft and the yolk was creamy. 1. boil:v. 营养6. once and for all : 一劳永逸地、彻底地7. run tests:运行测试8. boiling water:沸水、开水9. creamy :adj.

    2026Day5 - Why do we get bored?【精读】

05 Why do we get bored? Feeling bored can also be a good chance for us to learn new things. These days many people spend hours looking at their phones. Why? A possible answer is that they just feel bored. Why don’t we like feeling bored? What is boredom? Boredom is a feeling. There are two types of boredom: meaningless and attentional. The first type happens when we don’t find meaning in our actions. The second type comes when people find it too difficult to focus on something. For example, students might say that “math is boring”. That is because it’s too difficult for them. Is boredom bad? Boredom is neither good nor bad . What matters is our attitude. For example, we may find a math problem boring. If we can’t deal with our feelings well, we might just give up and feel bad. But things change when we can control our feelings and try to solve the problem. Boredom can then become a good chance to learn new things. Are we more bored now? No, boredom is not a new thing. Over 2,000 years ago, people already felt bored. However, it’s now much easier to get away from boredom because of things like phones. But because we’re always using them, we might be worse at dealing with boredom. 1. a good chance for us to:对我们来说是一个做... 态度7. get away from:摆脱8. deal with:处理纸质版阅读练习答案:1.B  2.A  3.B  4.C  5.B别忘了点击跟读版录音进行练习。

2026Day4 - Know how to pick right friends【

04 Know how to pick the right friends We often say, “A friend in need is a friend indeed .” But should friends help us even when we’re making bad choices ? Confucius gives an answer to this question in The Analects of Confucius. What does it mean? Everyone has dreams and goals, and it is a great thing to have friends to stand by us. But you also need to know who is truly helping you. How can we tell what kind of person someone is? According to Confucius, just see what they encourage us to do. If they guide us toward good things, they are true friends. But if they like bad actions, then you shouldn’t trust them. We often have to find out if something is truly good for us. Some activities, like playing video games, may bring joy now but become a problem later. You might forget to do your homework or have bad habits. When you think about a friend’s influence on you, ask yourself: Do they help you become a better person? Or do they make you do bad things? 1. A friend in need is a friend indeed.:患难见真情。2. making choices: 做决定3. Confucius :孔子4. an answer to this question : .... The Analects of Confucius:论语6. stand by sb : 支持...7. encourage sb. to do:鼓励...做...8. guide sb. toward:引导... 前进9. become a problem :成为一个问题10. an influence on:对... 1.A  2.B  3.A  4.B  5.B别忘了点击跟读版录音进行练习。

03 Dogs put on a good show If you love dogs, you may know about the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. It is one of the most popular dog competitions in the world. Judges look at the dogs and choose the best-looking ones. The show came back for its 149th year on Feb 8, 10 and 11 this year. The judges need to look closely at the dogs and know all about them. According to AP News, they need to know about 201 different kinds of dogs! Take a Pekingese for example. Donald Sturz, the club president, started by looking at its face and body. He checked to see if it had an “envelope-shaped ” head. “The head is a mark of the kind,” Sturz told AP News. He then checked her weight — this kind of dog should be “pick-up heavy”. After that, he watched how it walked. Pekingese dogs are known for their special, slow way of walking. Other kinds of dogs also have their “ideal” looks. For example, Labradors have special otter tails, and Dachshunds have sausage-like bodies.1. put on a good show:上演一出好戏2. judge: n. Pekingese : n. Labrador:n. Dachshund:n.

People don’t have enough eggs to buy due to bird flu. On Feb 18, a chicken stood next to a stack of eggs at Sunrise Farms in California, US. Right now, it’s expensive to buy eggs in the US as their price is at an all-time high. On Feb 7, a dozen eggs cost $7.34 (about 53 yuan). In 2024, the price was about 4.15 dollars. The rise in egg prices is mostly because of bird flu . This type of flu is caused by a virus. It can make birds very sick. To stop the flu, farms across the US have to kill a lot of birds, including chickens. In January alone, workers put down over 23 million of them. What’s more, farms also need time to clean the chickens’ houses and raise new chickens. Currently, there are over 3,700 emojis, all of which are approved by the Unicode Consortium – an official group that decides on new emojis – however, eight new emojis could be hitting phone screens in 2025. **EMOJI CRAZE** Between 2012 and 2013 emojis became so popular that in August 2013, the word was added to the Oxford English Dictionary. The proposed emojis are: a tired face with bags under the eyes, a human fingerprint, a paint splatter, a root vegetable, a leafless tree, a harp, a shovel and the flag of Sark (one of the Channel Islands). Day99 - Chimpanzees chat just like humans【精读】

99Chimpanzees chat just like humansScientists know that chimpanzees are a lot like humans – we both have a common ancestor and share about 98.6% of our DNA (a special chemical that tells your body how to grow and develop). Now, researchers studying chimpanzees have found that we are alike in other ways, too. Chimpanzees like to have “conversations” with each other and, when they are “talking”, they wait for the other chimp to finish. Cat Hobaiter and her colleagues, from Scotland’s University of St Andrews, looked at thousands of wild chimpanzees interacting and found that they chatted to each other using gestures, such as hand movements, and facial expressions. They also had “polite” conversations where they waited for the other chimp to finish, but sometimes they butted in, just like humans do. Hobaiter’s team also found that apes take around 120 milliseconds (a thousandth of a second) to respond, compared with 200 for humans. “It’s amazing to see how close the chimpanzees and human timings were,” she said.1. chimpanzee n.

Day97 - Which volcano had the loudest eruption?【精读】

97 Which volcano had the loudest eruption?Volcanoes are where melted rock bursts out of Earth’s solid surface as lava. The low rumbling sounds a volcano makes are caused by molten rock building up pressure underground. However, the loud explosion heard when a volcano erupts is caused by jets of hot gases – previously dissolved in the molten rock – exploding out of the volcano, together with clouds of rock and ash. The loudest volcanic noise was the 1883 eruption of Mount Krakatoa, in Indonesia. It was 310 decibels – 100 decibels louder than a rocket launch – and was heard by people 3,000 miles away. It was actually the loudest sound ever recorded on Earth. 1. volcano n.火山2. eruption: n.爆炸3. melt : v.融化4. burst out of :从...爆发出来5. solid surface: 固体表面6. lava:熔岩7. be caused by: 由...所导致8. build up pressure:积聚压力9. jet:n.

Day96 - Why do fruits have seeds? 【

96 Why do fruits have seeds?A seed is simply how a plant grows a new baby plant. A big problem plants have is that they can’t move – fruits are simply one way they have evolved to spread their seeds far and wide. Fruits are eaten by animals who later deposit the seeds somewhere new when they have a poo, which also means there’s some handy and nutritious fertiliser to help the seeds grow. Fruits have evolved to have bright colours and strong smells to send a clear message to any hungry animal – tuck in! Specific colours or smells have even evolved to appeal to specific animals in local areas. 1. seed n. 4. spread their seeds far and wide :把种子撒的又远又广5. deposit: v.使沉淀,存储6. have a poo:大便7. handy:adj. 11. send a clear message to: 向...

    Day95 - Facts for digesting of the fish-eating birds【精读】

95 Facts for the digesting of the fish-eating birdsHow do fish - eating birds swallow and digest whole fish with all the organs and bones? Alexandra Birds’ ancestors were dinosaurs, and what are now wings started out as arms millions of years ago. Wings are great for flying, but not so useful for eating. Many birds like ospreys and eagles use their sharp talons to rip food into small pieces, but many fish - eating birds, such as herons, often have their long legs in deep water. This means they can only rely on their beak to catch and eat food. The first step to safely eating a fish whole is to swallow it head - first. This allows it to slip down easily without the backward - pointing scales or fins poking into the side of the oesophagus (the food pipe linking the mouth to the stomach). Birds flip the fish around, being very careful to swallow it correctly. Fish - eating birds have two stomachs to help digest whole fish. The first stomach is filled with strong acid, which breaks down scales and bones. Food then moves into the second stomach, where it is broken down into small pieces and digested as usual. Food stored in the first stomach is also ready to be vomited up for the bird’s children to eat. 1. digest v.消化2. swallow: v.吞下3. ancestor :n.祖先4. start out as  :最初是...5. osprey:n.鱼鹰6. talon:爪子7. rely on:依靠8. whole:adv. 酸13. break out : 分解14. store:v.

    Day95 - Facts for digesting of the fish-eating birds【

Day94 - Why do we feel fear and why does breathing help【精读】

94 Why do we feel fear and why does breathing help?   What you feel as fear is called your fight - or - flight response. Basically, you feel your body getting ready to confront danger head on, or run away to safety. This reaction – a faster heartbeat and breathing, and your hairs standing on end – is not under your control. Instead, it happens automatically. Many other mammals, from monkeys and elephants to our pet dogs and cats share this response. It helps wild animals survive risky situations. Although humans live less dangerous lives, the fight - or - flight reaction should remind you how closely related we are to our wild animal ancestors. Although it is automatic, you can manage the fear response. Breathing slowly helps reduce feelings of panic, because you are focused on controlling your body systems and bringing your body back to its usual relaxed state.  1. breathe v.呼吸2. fight - or - flight response: 战斗或逃跑反应3. basically :adv.基本上4. confront danger  :直面危险5. head on:迎面6. run away:逃跑7. safety:n.安全8. stand on end: 竖立起来9. under your control:在你的控制之下10. automatically:adv. 更少的13. be related to : 和...

93 Sea TroutAt this time of year sea trout are making their annual journey back to the rivers where they were born. They have left their feeding grounds out to sea and returned to deep pools inland. Here, they patiently wait until the water-level rises. When it gets high enough, they swim against the river current to reach their spawning grounds. Female fish lay their eggs in gravel nests known as redds. As a female releases her eggs, an adult male fertilises them. The female then covers the fertilised eggs with gravel.
