I have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Tech University and an MBA from Pepperdine University. I have been a principal mechanical design and development engineer. I have also worked as a principal systems engineer, quality engineer, and Raytheon 6-Sigma expert. My primary work has been in the aerospace, computer, oilfield, defense industries, and education sectors. I have been fascinated with the power of critical thinking ever since a class I took from Dr. Wayne Gertmenian (Dr. G.) in Microeconomics at Pepperdine University during my MBA program. In sixteen weeks, Dr. G. taught us a great deal about Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and spiced up the class with religion, law, and investing. Throughout the course, Dr. G. repeatedly encouraged critical thinking. This inspired me to learn about and write about our brains' incredible power and usefulness when we think critically. Engineering, business, school, and life are much richer when we use the full power of our minds. My recent books have been on the practical mathematics of poker. These include Mastering Poker Math, Volume 1, Mastering Poker Math, Volume 2, and the Mastering Poker Math Workbook. They are all available on Amazon.com. I live in Georgetown, Texas, and enjoy visiting family and friends, reading, writing, exercising, traveling, playing Texas No-Limit Hold’em, Pickleball, Argentine Tango, investing, traveling, and more. I desire to give back and serve as the chairman of the board of advisors for ICAN, the International Cancer Advocacy Network, in the war against cancer. http://www.chuckclayton.net/ #TheDougThompsonPodcast #EmergingSpeakers #CriticalThinking #Engineering #Business #PokerMath #storytelling #iblamedoug

Asking Why: The Recycling Conundrum of Doug Thompson's Technology Tour Guide

When Doug attempts to do the right thing by buying recycled paper cups, he soon discovers the startling truth about plastic recycling and sets off on a journey to unmask the lies of the autocrats and bureaucrats. This episode was about Questioning what we think we know. I learned about this topic through spilling coffee in my truck and researching the truth behind recycling. Through research, I discovered that recycling is not as effective as it seems, with only 2.4 million tons of plastic waste out of the 51 million generated in 2020 being recycled. We should be questioning how to better reuse materials and hold our leaders accountable for their decisions. Ask questions and keep asking why to get to the truth.   You also get to meet another one of my alter egos, Poindexter. "It's up to us to create the nirvana we're looking for - we can't let the autocrats and bureaucrats do that for us. Hold them responsible, ask the questions, and keep asking why." In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. Are we really getting the most out of recycling? 2. How can we use the plastic that can't be recycled in a constructive way? 3. How can we hold our elected officials accountable for our multi-trillion dollar spending spree?

Button up and buckle down with the Technology Tour Guide Podcast and Doug Thompson!

When Doug Thompson goes to pick up his dry cleaning and notices a strange button pattern, he embarks on an unexpected journey to uncover the compelling, ironic history of buttons and why "we've always done it that way". In this video, you will learn: 1. Have you ever wondered why some shirt buttons are horizontal and others are vertical? 2. Why do men's shirts have the buttons on the right side and women's on the left? 3. What is the origin of the "we've always done it that way" attitude?< 4. Why is the WADITW a bad thing? This episode of Technology Tour Guide is about What to buttons have to do with Transformation?. I learned that buttons have a long history and can tell us a lot about the past. Men's buttons are on the right to make drawing swords easier, while women's buttons are on the left to make it easier for them to be dressed. We can use this thought process to question the way we do things in life and strive for transformation. #TeamDoug and #TeamClyde are hashtags to use to join the conversation. "Let's think a little bit different. So as you go forward this week doing something cool, button, hey, get a shirt with buttons on the other side. Or, hell, get a shirt with no buttons on it. Velcro would be good to go." "Clippy You Must Die: Surviving Technology Frustrations"

I remember way back when I opened Microsoft Word, and there was Clippy, the annoying paperclip that tried to help me. He was so bad, they made memes about him. When I type something in, autocorrect can make it worse. I remember my former boss, who would spell words so badly that auto correct even got it wrong. Spell check is better, but it doesn't stop people from misspelling my name. The danger is when technology that is supposed to help us only helps us 80% of the time. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are supposed to be the saviors, but they are only as good as the training they are given. We have to trade off having a poorer experience but having our data private. I'm still not sure what they are doing "But as we try to do AI to new things, it's messy at first because it's still learning. It's like a child. And it's only as good, though, as the training it's given. So we're all human and we train it, and then you can add machine learning to it, which trains it at a higher rate." In this episode, you will learn the following: What is the most frustrating experience with technology that you have had? What is your opinion on AI and its capabilities? What do you think about the trade-off between privacy and convenience when it comes to technology? The Technology Tour Guide: A Travel Day from Hell

Design your technology with the customer in mind for a seamless experience.  In this episode, you will learn:  1. What happens when technology fails while you're traveling?  2. What are the consequences of outsourcing customer service?  3. How can technology be designed to better serve customers? "If I'm designing this, I'm starting from the point of view of the customer and working the way up." I was flying into Philadelphia for a presentation, and I had to fly out to Denver the following day. I decided to rent a Jaguar SUV for the luxury, but I found out there was a tax for luxury. I got the car and drove to my presentation. The next morning, I called the valet to bring my car around, but they said the battery was dead. I had to call National Car Rental's roadside assistance, which redirected me to a third party. They sent a tow truck and Uber. I finally got to my hotel and checked in, but my flight was delayed. I finally got to Denver at 11:30pm. Two days later, I still hadn't received my receipt from National Car Rental, so I called the depot. They said the car In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. What happens when technology fails while you're traveling? 2. What are the consequences of outsourcing customer service? 3.
