1.1 WAYANG DUO
by Catherine Queenie Djie
Welcome back to our podcast! Wayang duo where history speaks up. I am Queenie and here is Alyssa. Today we’re diving into something really unique from Indonesia: Wayang Kulit.Woo, that’s the shadow puppet theater, right? I’ve heard it’s super famous, but honestly I don’t know much about it.Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Wayang Kulit is basically a traditional shadow puppet show. The word “wayang”means shadow, and “kulit” means leather, because the puppets are made from carved buffalo or goat hide.Wait, so they’re not plastic or wood?Nope! Pure leather, carved with super tiny details, then painted with bright colors and gold. And the puppets are controlled with sticks made from buffalo horn or bamboo. Pretty fancy, right?
