#50 - Dr Vonda Wright - Healthy Aging and Longevity
Today, we’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Vonda Wright, a highly experienced double boarded orthopedic surgeon with a deep understanding of aging, healthspan, and longevity. With decades of experience, Dr. Wright shares how her journey—from her early days as a cancer nurse to her path in orthopedic surgery and her research on muscle and metabolic health—has shaped her unique approach to healthy aging. 🩺🌿 In this conversation, Dr. Wright dives into what it means to age well, providing real, actionable insights to help us live our healthiest, most active lives. We cover so much valuable information, including: Aging vs. Longevity: Why aging doesn’t have to mean physical or mental decline. We explore the difference between lifespan (how long you live) and healthspan (how well you live). Dr. Wright reveals that healthy aging is within reach and doesn’t have to mean giving up our vitality or mobility. 🌱 The Power of Muscle Health & Movement: Did you know that our muscle health has a huge impact on our overall longevity? Dr. Wright explains why staying active, lifting weights, and building muscle can be the ultimate key to aging well. We discuss how to maintain lean muscle, keep our bones strong, and how daily movement supports physical and mental health across the years. 💪🧠 Hormone Health & Its Role in Aging: For many, understanding hormone health can be complex. Dr. Wright breaks down the importance of hormone balance, particularly as we reach midlife, and why it plays such a critical role in keeping our bodies healthy and resilient. Learn how hormones like estrogen and testosterone impact everything from energy levels to brain health, and how to make informed choices about hormone replacement therapy. 🔄🧬 Nutrition, Sleep & Anti-Inflammatory Choices: Aging gracefully requires more than exercise alone. Dr. Wright dives into how nutrition, quality sleep, and an anti-inflammatory diet can all influence our healthspan. She shares practical tips, from avoiding refined sugar and choosing high-quality proteins to incorporating nutrient-dense foods into your daily meals for optimized cellular health. 🍃🥗 Rethinking “Normal” Aging: One of the most empowering messages Dr. Wright shares is the idea that “normal” doesn’t have to mean inevitable decline. Drawing on her experiences in sports medicine and aging research, she emphasizes that we’re not just “victims of aging” but active participants in our health journey. Through mindset, lifestyle choices, and small daily actions, we can redefine what aging means in today’s world. 🌍✨ #MuscleHealth #HormoneHealth #AntiInflammatoryDiet #MobilityMatters #WellnessJourney #HealthyLiving #3ThoughtsOn #LiveYourBestLife

#30 - Tech Update - NUVIEW's CEO Clint Graumann on LiDAR
Today my guest is Clint Graumann. Clint is the CEO and Co-founder of NUVIEW. NUVIEW is revolutionizing the Earth observation industry by building the first commercial satellites designed to annually map the planet’s entire land surface with LiDAR technology. This earned them a spot as One of Time Magazine’s 2023 Inventions of the Year. For those of you not familiar with LiDAR, it stands for Light Detection and Ranging, and is a remote-sensing technology that uses lasers to measure precise distances and movement in an environment, in real time. The basic principles of LiDAR are similar to Radar and Sonar in the sense that All three technologies emit energy waves to detect and track objects. While radar uses radio or microwaves and sonar uses sound waves, LiDAR uses reflected light, which can measure distance faster, with greater precision and higher resolution than either radar or sonar. You may ask, why does this matter to me? Well, Satellite imagery helps scientists keep track of how our planet’s natural and man made environments are changing. The detailed topographic maps this technology can generate can be used to assess hazards and natural disasters such as lava flows, landslides, tsunamis, floods, as well as other Environmental and conservation situations. Outside of that, use cases include Archaeology and cultural heritage and preservation, as well as Infrastructure construction and urban planning. We live in times where technology is blamed for eliminating jobs. It is companies like NUVIEW that use technology to create a new generation of jobs that can help us take care of our environment all while improving our quality of life. As a Lake Nona resident and entrepreneur, I am excited that NUVIEW chose Lake Nona as their home. I am a proud resident here and I am excited about the contributions this community is offering in the fields of technology and health. Clint and I had a great conversation and I am confident you will find it interesting as well. #27 - Book Review - Leadership, Art or Science by Marco Frigerio
We continue with our series on Book Reviews and my guest is Marco Frigerio. Marco and I have been friends since the late 90s when we worked together on the deployment of one of the first CDMA networks in Latin America in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A lot has happened since then. Marco not only has a reputable career in cellular telecom, but has also worked with the US Navy. His global experience in both the commercial and military world, has exposed him to a variety of leadership styles and approaches; some of those experiences were great while others not so much. This drove him to write a book titled Leadership, Art or Science? In the book Marco shares what he has learned over the years and provides concise examples of successful and not so successful approaches to leadership. Marco and I agree that the world needs better leaders… leaders who understand that the world has changed and will continue to change. But most importantly, the world needs leaders who not only understand the environment around them, but also understand themselves first. We had a great conversation and I am sure you will enjoy the book. I think Airin’s story is inspirational and will resonate with you as we discuss the ups and downs of her journey to become the entrepreneur, coach and body builder she is today. Three Things led Airin to become a coach: 1. To pass on knowledge to other women so they could feel the same way that she did. 2. #20 - Mental Health - Anxiety with Shannon Rollins
Today we continue the series on Mental Health by discussing the topic of anxiety. My guest today is Shannon Rollins who is a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Anxiety Relief Expert. Shannon has a Master of Science degree in Health Behavior from the University of Florida, and is a Master NLP Practitioner and Anxiety Rapid Relief Specialist. Shannon has eight years of experience helping men and women improve their mental health and emotional resiliency through hypnosis, one-on-one coaching, group wellness programs, and courses. Her passion is helping people alleviate anxiety and create inner-peace for a healthier life inside and out. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are often misunderstood and associated with entertainment shows. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Hypnosis has robust scientific framework, and medical research continues to show use cases for hypnosis as a therapy tool. Clinical research has shown that it can help relieve pain and anxiety and aid smoking cessation, weight loss, and sleep just to name a few. It can help individuals better regulate their feelings and behaviors, as well as managing stress, coping with life’s challenges, and improving physical and emotional health. #16 - Addiction with Hilary Phelps
Today I am excited to begin a series dedicated to the very important topic of addiction. My guest today is Hilary Phelps. From the beginning, Hilary was an overachiever. She was a strait “A” student and the fastest swimmer in the country for her age group, until the age of 14, when she took her first sip of alcohol. From that moment, she was hooked and spent the next 15-years drinking, and feeling empty, lost, and hopeless. At 29, Hilary checked herself into rehab for substance use disorder. It wasn’t just about putting down the drink, but about changing people, places and things in her life that ultimately caused her to use alcohol in the first place. Hilary kept her recovery and sobriety quiet until she celebrated 15-years of continuous sobriety in June 2022. It was then she realized “we’re only as sick as our secrets” and also realized her mission and purpose wasn’t to stay quiet, but to help those healing in private keep going, by sharing her recovery and healing journey out loud. Hilary is a speaker, an addiction recovery advocate, writer, and a holistic wellness coach. To me, she is an inspiration and a friend. Her mission and purpose is to help other women find their voice and heal from anything that is holding them back from finding their purpose. This episode was recorded over a month ago, but due to technical difficulties during the recording, it took me a while to get it released. https://www.hilaryphelps.com/ Credits Song - Bittersweet https://youtu.be/u7lDY0hECfM?si=sWbPZ-hFeFf9bnmM by Ian D Joseph

#13 - Technology - The Role of Tech in our Daily Lives with Juan Santos
Welcome to 3 Thoughts On. Today I am delighted to have Juan Santos as my guest. Juan Santos is Senior Vice President of Brand Experience and Innovation at Tavistock Development where he leads the Marketing, Public Relations, and Resident Activation disciplines. At TDC he is part of a multi-disciplinary team that uses design thinking to build places where people can thrive. With more than 20 years of experience creating experiences that connect people and brands through technology, he has been involved in many industry milestones, including the first worldwide webcast for Earth Day, and the first digital consumer electronics catalog for Toshiba USA. Juan is a recognized expert in Smart Cities, Design Thinking, User Generated Content, Virtual Worlds, Physical + Digital and Loyalty & Rewards. Juan and I share a belief that science and technology are essential for man kind. If we look around our homes, offices and public places, there is not a single device that works just because. Everything around us that is manmade was at one point in time a science project led by a physicist, chemist or some other type of scientist who was working strictly for the purpose of understanding something complex. We believe that when scientists are allowed to do science they come up with discoveries that can have dramatic positive impact in human life. It may be decades before those discoveries become viable in the marketplace. At least in the United States, it is our grandparents and great grandparents’ tax dollars that funded the science experiments that are the foundation of every gadget, medical instrument, or appliance that we mindlessly use today. Yes, without the science, nothing gets built. Juan and I believe that societies could benefit from understanding how technology helps us live our daily lives. This episode will be the first of a series focused on the origins of the Technology that permeates our daily lives today. Some of the technology comes from the space program and some of comes from other industries and government programs. #10 - Resilience with Ultra-Endurance Athlete Charlie Engle
Charlie Engle is a global ultra-endurance athlete and founder of the 5.8 Global Adventure Series, one of the most ambitious expeditions in modern history, trekking from the lowest to the highest points on all seven continents. He is also one of the most accomplished ultramarathon runners in the world, completing hundreds of races around the world. His incredible determination and athletic ability was profiled in the film, Running the Sahara, produced and narrated by Matt Damon. The documentary highlighted his historic, record-setting journey across the world’s largest desert, running nearly two marathons a day for 111 consecutive days, for a total of more than 4,500 miles. Charlie’s transcontinental run through deep sand and politically unstable countries remains one of the premier accomplishments in the ultra-endurance and adventure sports worlds. After crossing the Sahara and seeing the global water crisis firsthand, Charlie teamed up with Matt Damon to raise $6M and create H20 Africa, which later became the global humanitarian organization, Water.org. Charlie’s memoir, Running Man, (Simon & Schuster) became a bestseller shortly after it was published in 2016. While the book details his inspiring life story, it’s about more than just running. It’s about facing demons, overcoming impossible odds, keeping your sense of humor, and discovering the redemptive power of putting one foot in front of the other, even when you feel like you can’t keep going. His motivation to run and tackle extreme adventures stems from his battle with addiction to drugs and alcohol. Charlie has been in recovery since July 23, 1992, and he credits a large part of his recovery to the purposeful devotion and emotional release he experiences while running. He was also helped by thousands of recovery meetings and other traditional therapies. Charlie practices yoga and meditation, therapeutic breath work, and uses other cutting edge treatments like cryotherapy, infrared therapy and hyperbaric therapy to stay sharp and healthy. He’s also been a plant based athlete for over 20 years. Charlie is a dynamic speaker who has enthralled audiences around the world, from keynotes at the Boston Marathon and Google to the National Geographic Society, NATO, the United Nations and the deck of a nuclear-class U.S. Naval aircraft carrier. He is also a featured presenter on Tony Robbins' Power of Success Tour. He’s been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic Weekend, Outside, Runner’s World, NPR’s All Things Considered, Men’s Journal, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, as well as numerous podcasts and books. https://www.charlieengle.com/ Credits Song - Bittersweet https://youtu.be/u7lDY0hECfM?si=sWbPZ-hFeFf9bnmM by Ian D Joseph

#4 - Truth - Is it Objective or Subjective?
In this episode I try to address the difficult topic of truth by separating truths into objective and subjective truths. This was a challenge but I hope that it sparks conversation as to how to live in a world where we are all responsible for what we believe to be truth. #3 - Effective Communications - Part 1 of Think Classically Argue Better with John Mullahy
Think Classically - Argue Better is a series of conversations with my friend John Mullahy. The purpose of this series is to share possible ways of communicating better by breaking down the various components of classical formal argumentation. Both John and I share the belief that our struggles in society are in part due to our inability to communicate effectively. We hope these sessions are fun and useful to you. This first episode is titled "The background and purpose of argumentation" Credits Song - Bittersweet https://youtu.be/u7lDY0hECfM?si=sWbPZ-hFeFf9bnmM by Ian D Joseph

#2 - The Human Brain
The Human Brain In order to understand ourselves, it helps to understand details about our brain. Our brain is a marvel and we know so much more about it than we did a few decades ago. This episode is a bit longer than I wanted (22 mins), but given the complexity of the subject, I thought it was warranted.
