641: "Spontaneity has its time and place" | The Sure Thing (1985)
We’re digging into the archives to bring you a former Patron-exclusive! This week, we’re unlocking a classic episode from a few years ago for everyone to enjoy: our breakdown of the 1985 quintessential road-trip rom-com, The Sure Thing. Before he was a cynical high-fidelity record store owner, a young John Cusack was Walter "Gib" Gibson, a college freshman braving a cross-country trek for the promise of a "sure thing" waiting in California. But when he's forced to share the ride with his uptight classmate Alison, the open road becomes a battlefield of bickering, bad weather, and unexpected chemistry. It’s a charming look back at a film that proved Rob Reiner had the magic touch and that sometimes, the best things in life are the ones you didn't plan for. 🎧 Did you enjoy the episode? 611: "Would you follow Macaulay Culkin up a flight of stairs?" | Jacob's Ladder (1990)
For our tenth anniversary rewatch, we descend once again into the haunting nightmare of Jacob’s Ladder (1990). Joined by Patreon Co-Executive Producer and horror aficionado Rob Perry, we revisit Adrian Lyne’s psychological thriller to unpack its twisting layers of grief, trauma, and reality-bending terror. From Vietnam to New York and beyond, we explore how the film mixes horror with heartbreak — and why it still hits just as hard, decades later. 🎧 Did you enjoy the episode? 610: "Schindler's Lips" | The Addiction (1995)
In this episode, we sink our teeth into The Addiction (1995), Abel Ferrara’s moody, black-and-white vampire film that’s as much about Sartre and sin as it is about blood. We unpack the heavy philosophy behind the movie’s take on evil, addiction, and moral decay — and ask whether vampirism is just a metaphor for being human. Along the way, we wrestle with Nazi imagery, existential dread, and whether philosophy helps or just makes everything way more confusing. 🎧 Did you enjoy the episode? 607: "He hid the soul in the only place he knew they wouldn't find it..." | The Prophecy (1995)
This week we’re descending into The Prophecy (1995), the cult supernatural thriller where angels aren’t exactly playing harps. Christopher Walken commands the screen as Gabriel—less a messenger of God, more a celestial hitman with a serious grudge. As a second war brews in Heaven, a soul too dark for Hell becomes the battlefield, and humanity hangs in the balance. With Elias Koteas as the weary detective caught in the middle and Viggo Mortensen showing up as one of the creepiest Lucifers ever put to film, it’s scripture meets horror with a side of Walken weird. We’re flipping through the Book of Revelation and asking: what if the angels are the real problem? 🎧 Did you enjoy the episode? 606: "Signed, Sealed, and Psychotic" | Copycat (1995)
Copycat is the sinister psychological thriller where a reclusive profiler and a hard-nosed detective race to stop a serial killer with a twisted hobby: reenacting the crimes of history’s most infamous murderers. Sigourney Weaver is riveting as Dr. Helen Hudson, a brilliant mind trapped by trauma, while Holly Hunter brings grit and guts as the detective who pulls her back into the fray. 🎧 Did you enjoy the episode? 605: "Apple Vision Cerebro" | Strange Days (1995)
Virtual reality, Y2K paranoia, and noir-drenched chaos—it’s all wired into Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days (1995). Ralph Fiennes plays a black-market memory dealer caught in a web of murder, conspiracy, and past trauma, while Angela Bassett brings the fire as a bodyguard with a conscience (and some serious action chops). Set in the final hours of 1999, the film is a pulsing, POV-shot thrill ride through a dystopian Los Angeles, where technology lets you feel someone else’s memories—and the truth is more dangerous than anything on tape. It's messy, bold, and weirdly ahead of its time. 🎧 Did you enjoy the episode? 604: “Nicky rigged the car with an F-bomb“ | Casino (1995)
Martin Scorsese’s glitzy, blood-soaked chronicle of power, greed, and betrayal in the neon-lit mirage of Las Vegas: Casino. Robert De Niro plays Ace Rothstein, the meticulous casino manager who knows every bet, every angle, and every cheat—until love and loyalty start skewing the odds. Joe Pesci is a walking powder keg as Nicky Santoro, a mob enforcer with no off-switch, and Sharon Stone delivers a hurricane of heartbreak and havoc as Ginger. It’s a symphony of excess where the chips are high, the violence is sudden, and the house always wins—until it doesn’t. Did you enjoy the episode? We’re diving into Heat (1995), Michael Mann’s sprawling crime saga where Al Pacino’s relentless detective and Robert De Niro’s meticulous thief circle each other in a deadly dance of professionalism, obsession, and inevitability. 602: "You Got Knocked the %^&# Out!" | Friday (1995)
This week we’re chilling out on the porch with Friday (1995), the laid-back comedy that gave us smoky backyards, unforgettable one-liners, and the kind of neighborhood drama you can only survive with a good friend and a bad plan. Craig (Ice Cube) just got fired on his day off, Smokey (Chris Tucker) owes a drug dealer $200 by tonight, and Big Worm isn’t exactly known for his patience. Between dodging bullets, borrowing cash, and roasting everyone in sight, it’s a day where nothing goes right—but somehow, everything goes down. It’s laughs, life lessons, and “Bye, Felicia” in its purest form. Did you enjoy the episode? Don’t forget to hit that subscribe button and join us for more retro movie discussions! Want even more? 601: "Dick is Good!" | The Distinguished Gentleman (1992)
This week we’re rewinding to The Distinguished Gentleman (1992) for one of our 10th anniversary rewatch episodes, because what better way to celebrate a decade of podcasting than with Eddie Murphy running for Congress on a technicality? He plays Thomas Jefferson Johnson, a small-time con man who discovers the biggest scam of all might just be Washington, D.C. Armed with charm, hustle, and a dead Congressman’s name, he cons his way into power—only to find out that in politics, the game is rigged and the stakes are sky-high. 600: "Look at Me" | Get Shorty (1995)
Get Shorty (1995) — the only Hollywood story where the mobster is the most charming guy in the room. John Travolta smooth-talks his way from loan shark to movie producer, Gene Hackman bumbles through toupee trauma, and there’s enough double-crossing, script-flipping, and industry satire to make you wonder if crime actually is showbiz. Adam Sandler baby-talks his way through every grade, Chris Farley turns a bus ride into a meltdown, and there’s enough gibberish, dodgeball, and shampoo-conditioner drama to make you question the education system entirely. Jackson’s the reluctant partner who didn’t sign up for this, and Jeremy Irons plays a villain who treats citywide chaos like an art project. Antonio Banderas is the slickest mariachi with a mission, Salma Hayek sets the screen on fire, and every shootout feels like a rock concert with a body count. It’s tequila-soaked mayhem, slow-mo carnage, and enough style to make your sunglasses sweat. Lock the case. Load the guns. Let’s blow the roof off. Did you enjoy the episode? 596: "You have the right to remain unconscious" | Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)
We’re diving back into Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) for one of our 10th anniversary rewatch episodes—because nothing says “celebrating a decade of podcasting” like explosions, bickering, and a saxophone-heavy score. Riggs is still unhinged, Murtaugh’s somehow even closer to retirement (again), and the city’s being torn apart by a corrupt ex-cop with armor-piercing bullets and a bad attitude. Toss in Rene Russo as the internal affairs sergeant who matches Riggs punch for punch (and flirt for flirt), and you’ve got peak ’90s buddy-cop chaos. It’s bullets, banter, bromance—and a reminder that after ten years of the 30something Movie Podcast, we’re still not too old for this… well, you know. Did you enjoy the episode? 595: "Enter The Hackman" | The Quick and The Dead (1995)
This week we’re saddling up with The Quick and the Dead (1995), Sam Raimi’s spaghetti western by way of a Looney Tunes fever dream. Sharon Stone rides into town with a score to settle, Russell Crowe tries to outrun his past, and Gene Hackman chews the scenery like it’s a steak he overcooked himself. Leonardo DiCaprio is all charm and babyface bravado, and every gunfight is a crash zoom carnival of smoke, sweat, and a ticking clock. It’s duels at high noon, showdowns at sundown, and the kind of over-the-top visual flair that makes you wonder if the camera’s going to start shooting bullets too. Bonus: "Brewster's Millions" (1985)
Between illness and travel and family stuff, life has been a little crazy lately. That's also thrown off the recording schedule for the podcast! But we don't want you to miss out on great movies, so here's a compromise: We're pulling a Patreon exclusive episode out of the vault and sharing it with the masses. This one is in honor of our first Patreon member: Padraig from Ireland! I got the chance to finally meet our good friend in person while on vacation with my wife and we had a great time. So, naturally, when I had to decide which episode to pull from the Patreon feed, Padraig's first recommendation for us came to mind. Thanks, Padraig... and I hope everyone else enjoys this review of Brewster's Millions we did back in 2020.
