Episode 6 - The Hammer and the Anvil - 314th TCG at Sukchon and Sunchon

In the autumn of 1950, UN forces were relentlessly pushing the collapsing North Korean People's Army northward following the breakout from the Pusan Perimeter. Seeking total annihilation of the fleeing forces and desperate to rescue a group of American POWs—survivors of the brutal Tiger Death March—military planners devised a daring trap. The strategy required dropping an airborne force deep behind enemy lines at the critical geographic choke points of Sukchon and Sunchon. This would create an impenetrable "anvil" against which the advancing U.S. Eighth Army "hammer" could crush the retreating enemy forces. This episode tells the story of a paradigm-shifting operation that bridged the gap between the mass airborne drops of WWII and modernized heavy-lift strategies, forever changing military history. Join us as we explore how the "Giants" of the 314th Troop Carrier Group, flying a fragile fleet of Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcars, integrated with the elite combat power of the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, known as the Rakkasans. Overcoming mechanical nightmares and intense ground fire, these pioneering airmen successfully delivered over 2,800 paratroopers. More incredibly, for the first time ever, they dropped 105mm heavy artillery directly into a combat zone by parachute, effectively rendering the combat glider obsolete. We will unpack the overwhelming tactical brilliance of the assault, the maintenance miracles that made it possible, and the devastating weather delays that resulted in a tragic strategic miss at the Sunchon tunnel.

Episode 5 - Bridge from the Sky - 314th TCG and the Miracle at Chosin Reservoir

In the brutal winter of December 1950, deep in the frozen mountains of North Korea, over 30,000 United Nations troops found themselves trapped and facing annihilation. Surrounded by more than 120,000 enemy soldiers at the Chosin Reservoir, their only path to survival was a narrow mountain road blocked by a 1,500-foot-deep gorge where a crucial bridge had been destroyed. With no way to repair it from the ground, the situation for the encircled U.S. Marines and Soldiers was desperate. This episode tells the incredible true story of an unprecedented feat of aerial logistics and courage: the first and only time in history an entire bridge was delivered to a battlefield by air. Join us as we explore how the "Giants" of the 314th Troop Carrier Group, flying the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar, took on the impossible. Battling extreme weather, enemy fire, and the laws of physics itself, these heroic airmen dropped eight massive sections of a two-ton steel bridge from the sky, performing a logistical miracle that saved thousands of lives and became a legend of the Korean War.

Episode 4 - The Cargo Cult of Valor - 1968 and the Mortar Magnets

In 1968, the "Year of Shock" in Vietnam, the difference between life and death for besieged US Marines was a 40-foot aluminum tube: the C-130 Hercules. But to the troops on the ground, these vital aircraft were known as "Mortar Magnets" for the intense enemy fire they drew upon landing. This episode tells the incredible true stories of two 314th Tactical Airlift Wing C-130 crews who flew into the heart of the storm. Follow Lt. Col. Howard Dallman as his crew battles a raging fire inside their aircraft at Khe Sanh, right next to the base's main ammunition dump. Then, witness the iron will of Lt. Col. William Boyd, who, after seeing another C-130 shot down, pushes his aircraft to its absolute limit to evacuate over 100 souls from the overrun camp at Kham Duc. This is the story of the truck drivers of the sky and their cargo cult of valor.

Episode 3 - Survival and Escape in the Accursed Mountains

In the heart of World War II, a routine transport flight with 4 members of an aircrew from the 61st Troop Carrier Squadron, 314th Troop Carrier Group along with 26 Army Air Forces nurses and medics on board is swallowed by a ferocious storm and thrown tragically off course.
