DJ Dan: 5 Mag DJ Masters Series vol 1 (2012)

This is a 2012 5 Mag mix from the legendary DJ Dan. It's one of a number of mixes that were either struck off SoundCloud during that dark era or which were never uploaded here. This was the first "DJ Masters Series" mix and there would be only one other — I made up the whole series just to get a mix from DJ Dan. His mixtapes had been so influential in my own life that it was something of a sidequest to have one that said "5 Mag" on it. There was an interview that went with it too, and it's worth reading for some of Dan's views on his legacy: "Funky Tekno Tribe was run by two friends of mine (which I introduced) and our concept was to bring the most funky psychedelic music to the Bay Area rave scene. "The original parties started in San Francisco and were very elaborate in decor and always had the best sound systems. The decor was very tribal and organic… like you were in the middle of the jungle somewhere with really fucked up, funky music that you did not hear at any other parties. We chose our DJs well and everyone understood that we were bringing the most underground, even experimental music to our parties. This was our baby and we wanted it to be 100% our vision. That’s why the parties became so popular, people knew we were always going to be bringing something new and fresh every time and we were always consistent. "Funky Tekno Tribe was the first one to ever bring Daft Punk to America and I remember that being a huge thing in San Francisco because at the time, I was really pushing a very psychedelic disco sound and I had been playing their unreleased tracks on acetate months before they came out. Josh Wink, DJ Sneak and Mark Farina were also some of our favorite guests. We had so many great parties and every dj played their heart out, that is what I remember most about the Funky Tekno Tribe parties… the true spirit of the Underground!" https://5mag.net/audio/dj-dan-5-magazine-dj-masters-2012/ RIP Dan

SYNC / Paul Johnson - New Mix Monday (2010)

Our SYNC series of classic mixes that vanished off the internet continues with the third mix in this series from Paul Johnson, this one a 5 Mag original. A reader named Anthony alerted us to this mix's disappearance from the internet last year — an email that pretty much lead to the start of this series. This was originally posted a few days before Christmas in December 2010 as part of 5 Mag's New Mix Monday series. Paul always came through with a request and was able to drop a mix like this at a moment's notice, sometimes starting up the turntables when he was still on the phone. This is the soulful side of Paul Johnson in full effect. The mix disappeared from the internet sometime around 2016, first in the Great SoundCloud Purges, then a server move and is restored here for the first time since. 📸 Original Photo: Marie Staggat ✳️ Read 5 Mag's THE LEGEND OF PAUL JOHNSON for free: https://5mag.net/issues/5-mag-legend-of-paul-johnson-issue-free-download/

    SYNC Paul Johnson: RetroJacktive (2015)

Ultra rare sounds in a lost mix from one of the greatest DJs in the world. Paul Johnson mixing electro, synth and '80s classics in a unique throwback mix called RETROJACKTIVE. Where This Mix Came From: For a time, Paul Johnson was posting mixes to SoundCloud almost weekly and would delete them when they reached 100 downloads. I was one of the 100. Sometimes people re-uploaded them on SoundCloud or Mixcloud. But looking back through 5 Mag's archives, I found this mix again and realized that not only had it disappeared from the internet, but even the word "retrojacktive" turned up 0 search results. This might be the only copy of a very rare side of Paul Johnson. We have about three or four other mixes like this — either vanished from the internet or available in very restricted formats. ✳️ Read 5 Mag's THE LEGEND OF PAUL JOHNSON for free: https://5mag.net/issues/5-mag-legend-of-paul-johnson-issue-free-download/

With some friends in common, we’ve been meaning to interview Galen for years, and took the opportunity presented by the release of his new Magic Bus EP, out May 9 on Justin Martin’s What To Do label. We’re honored to share this new cover mix as well, which Galen made exclusively for 5 Mag. https://djgalen.bandcamp.com/album/magic-bus “This mix is an ode to the house music sound I was first exposed,” Galen tells us. “Not only does it showcase my latest tracks in the flow of a DJ mix, but it is also full of textures and long blends that traverse a delectable journey of ’90s nostalgia and modern production.” Read our bonus interview with Galen in the new issue of 5 Mag # 219 — out now: https://5mag.net/audio/galen-5-mag-cover-mix/ ☀️ more galen / http://soundcloud.com/dj-galen https://www.instagram.com/galensunset http://www.facebook.com/djgalen https://www.sunsetsoundsystem.com https://www.sunsetcampout.com ☀️ more 5 mag / Everything: https://5mag.net https://instagram.com/5.magazine https://facebook.com/5chicago https://hearthis.at/5magazine https://soundcloud.com/5magazine https://threads.net/@5.magazine

Elbert Phillips: A Frankie Knuckles Classics Tribute

Chicago DJ and producer Elbert Phillips pays tribute to the late, legendary Frankie Knuckles with this extended and thoroughly dope classic tribute mix. This is also an intensely personal mix — @elbert-struthers-phillips was both a fan and a confidant of Frankie Knuckles, one of a small handful of DJs handpicked by FK to open for him at his own events and selected shows. He also released a sensational cover of the Frankie Knuckles and Robert Owens classic “Tears” that 5 Mag covered last year. This mix is “a retrospective of his career from his residency at the Warehouse to selections that I think he would appreciate today,” Elbert says. “Two selections from the playlist (Din Jay’s ‘Cosmic Lust’ & Pat Bedeau’s ‘My Life’ aren’t classics, but they remind me of Frankie. Chris Forkis’s ‘Beats & Jembe’ is just a dope track that made sense with the others! Souldynamic’s ‘Too Hot For Love’ is def a classic tune but it’s got a heavier foot and edits.” 🔴 tracklisting / 1. — Mikki – Itchin’ For Love 2. — Gaz Nevada – I C Love Affair 3. — State of Grace – That’s When We’ll Be Free 4. — Bobby Womack – Inherit the Wind 5. — Montana Orchestra – Heavy Vibes (Club Mix) 6. — Henderson & Whitfield – Dancin to the Beat 7. — Candido – Dancin’ & Prancin’ 8. — The Limit – She’s So Devine 9. — Forrest – She’s So Divine (Instrumental) 10. — Phyllis Hyman – Goddess of Love 11. — Rick James – Glow (Instrumental) 12. — Janice McClain – In the Middle 13. — T C Connection – At Midnight (intro only) 14. — Brass Construction – Walking the Line 15. — Jago – I’m Going to Go (Frankie Knuckles Plant Mix) 16. — The Talking Heads – Zimbra 17. — Patrick Simmons – So Wrong 18. — Pushe – Don’t Take Your Love Away 19. — D-Train – You’re The One For Me 20. — Smokin’ Beats – Music 21. — Yvonne Young – Garden of Eve (Maurice Joshua Remix) 22. — Tongue N Cheek – Tomorrow (Frankie Knuckles Favorite Garage Mix) 23. — Chris Forkis – Beats & Jembe 24. — Lonnie Liston Smith – A Song For the Children 25. — Din Jay – Cosmic Lust 26. — Pat Bedeau – My Life 27. — Black Science Orchestra – Where Were You 28. — Souldynamic – Too Hot For Love 29. — D’elegance – Chansons D’elegance 30. — Elbert Phillips & Andre Espeut – Tears (Loving Tribute Mix) 31. — Alison Limerick – Where Love Lives 32. — Incognito – Like the Morning Sun (Reprise) 🔴 follow elbert phillips / https://www.instagram.com/dj_elbert_phillips https://soundcloud.com/elbert-struthers-phillips https://www.traxsource.com/artist/188975/elbert-phillips https://www.discogs.com/artist/1396729-Elbert-Phillips https://www.facebook.com/djelbertphillips/ 🔴 more 5 mag / Everything: https://5mag.net https://instagram.com/5.magazine https://facebook.com/5chicago https://hearthis.at/5magazine https://soundcloud.com/5magazine https://threads.net/@5.magazine

DJ Slugo: The 5 Mag Cover Mix

Dubbed the "ghetto-father of the American dance floor" by Underbeat London and Chicago's ghetto house champion by Leor Galil in the Chicago Reader, DJ Slugo is a dance music pioneer, with three decades under his belt producing, DJing and perfecting the ghetto house sound that he helped create. Never letting up since he emerged on the Southside of the city more than 30 years ago, Slugo most recently remixed the track "Chicago" for DRAMA and Ana Morgan's "Pop That" on NYC's Worst Behavior. We did a video feature with Slugo for 5 Mag's fifth anniversary, but we've never done a mix before. 5 Mag Cover Mix ⚡️ Rick Wade - Sanctify vol 10

Rick Wade is one of those electronic music producers who deserves the honorific title of "maestro." Listening to his music unlocks vibes, sensations, triggered by a deep knowledge of music that is impossible to reproduce without doing the work. The same, I think, goes for his DJ sets. This mix series, Sanctify, was created with a sound like Rick Wade's in mind: warm, analog-sounding deep house. "Late Night Basix" could be an alternate title. SYNC: Paul Johnson - Jive Turkey (2012)

We've been searching for a proper way to post all this stuff from 5 Mag's 18 years of history that slipped through the cracks. This series, SYNC, is our way to revisit that history in a respectful way and not just dump a bunch of content back on the internet without context. We could think of no better way to start than with this lost mix from the great Paul Johnson. There was never a time that we asked Paul Johnson for a favor and he turned us away. You could hit him up at 5am for a mix, an interview, a booking, a DJ chart, a free track or to sit for several hours for a video interview, as he did for our 5 year anniversary project. He was usually still up, and he almost always complied. He wasn't just a brilliant artist — maybe the best house music DJ and creator that Chicago ever produced. The guy gave of himself and his time like no one else. This was not an original 5 Mag mix. Paul used to post mixes to SoundCloud almost weekly and delete them when they reached 100 downloads. This one he called "Jive Turkey," and it was posted just prior to Thanksgiving weekend in 2012. We embedded this mix for a shortlived feature called "ChicagoCast," highlighting new mixes from figures in the Chicago house scene. Paul later deleted it, and when I asked about it he sent it over for us to repost. It seems to have fallen completely off the map since then; according to Google it's not available anywhere and this might be the only copy, or at least the only one we could find.

5 Mag Cover Mix ⚡️ Nick V Live @ La Mona

Nick V @nickv was born in Manchester but for the last three decades has been an integral part of the scene in Paris. His La Mona events, which he talks about elsewhere in this issue, are a dance culture party running since 2008 and "exploring the relationship between dance and electronic music," which "often sees dance enthusiasts sharing the floor with house music heads. La Mona has "long celebrated the LGBTQ scene, catering for the Parisian community and encouraging alternative dances such as Vogueing, Waacking and many more which were birthed out of the early disco and house scene in the US." As a DJ, record collector, audiophile and crate digger, Nick V's sound traverses through disco, deep techno, broken beat, boogie and dancefloor jazz while keeping house music at the core of everything. This cover mix for 5 Mag Issue 214 is the perfect encapsulation of that. 🔴 FOLLOW NICK V https://linktr.ee/NICK_V https://soundcloud.com/nickv https://www.instagram.com/nickvparis https://www.facebook.com/NICKVDJ https://www.instagram.com/lamonaparis https://linktr.ee/lamonaparis https://monamusique.bandcamp.com/music 🔴 FOLLOW 5 MAG Everything: https://5mag.net https://instagram.com/5.magazine https://facebook.com/5chicago https://hearthis.at/5magazine https://soundcloud.com/5magazine https://threads.net/@5.magazine

5 Mag Cover Mix ⚡️ Henna Onna: Sanctify vol 9

Like so many artists, we discovered @hennaonna 's music for the first time on David Nichols' @closertotruth label — her gorgeous and sophisticated Midori no Basho EP, released just over a year ago. Based in Yerevan, Armenia, Henna has also released stand-out tracks on labels including Nite Grooves, Kindisch, Lisztomania and more. Though impressed by her productions, we never heard her DJ. And then we heard her mix, and we were sold on it. Henna has a dope sound — that deep and warm deep house vibe that fits so well with our Sanctify mix series. Anna Schreit mix ☀️ RISE vol 23

🌅 Rise and shine it's time for more house music ☀️ Our latest mix is a warm & beautiful set from Anna Schreit for 5 Mag's weekly RISE series Anna Schreit @anna-maria-schreit was born and raised in Berlin, into a family of a musician who exposed her to a diverse range of music genres from a very young age. Her father's art rock band was one of her earliest influences, shaping her understanding of music and its various forms. Despite living in a beloved techno city in Europe, it was actually during a trip to Munich that Anna was introduced to the world of electronic music. It was here that she discovered the exotic sounds of house music, which proved to be a turning point for her musical journey. After falling in love with the endless possibilities of house music, Anna began DJing in 2012 to share the tracks she had collected and built up over the years. Her goal was to create immersive experiences and take her listeners on unique journeys through her sets. Anna Schreit's latest release is Duck EP, her first for the legendary Compost Records — a "warm and funky soulful three track" EP, each of which are dedicated to one of the three bookers at Berlin's Sisyphos where Anna is one of the club's valued regular DJs: https://compostrecords.lnk.to/AnnaSchreit-DuckEP This mix is part of 5 Mag's RISE series, a weekly DJ mix series created because missed the fun of a weekly DJ mix series. 🔴 Tracklist: 1. Jillian X @jillianx is a house DJ and event curator based in Chicago and co-founder of Stylin' Out Network. A dancefloor queen with punchy, bangin’ house beats that don’t stop, her style blends deep house, garage, and Chicago jackin' vibes. An intense love for all styles of house music combined with a never-ending search for that ultimate track is what motivates her sets. She has curated events for Red Bull Dance Your Style, Silver Room Block Party, Sleeping Village, The Whistler and Elastic Arts, among others. About this mix: "I wanted to celebrate the sounds that I bring to my monthly Dance Planet residency at Emporium," in Logan Square every 4th Saturday, she says. "Growing up in the 90’s in NJ, I was exposed to early club and house tracks often played on the radio, and while I didn’t then know their origins in Chicago, I always knew how those tracks made me feel, and they still make me feel the same way to this day!! It’s peak energy vibes, incorporating influence from Chicago and Jersey, mixing deep n soulful house with some high octane club bangers." The Cover Mix ⚡️ Black Sjuan

Black Sjuan is a DJ and producer with deep, deep roots in the Chicago house music scene. For the last three years we've been reviewing his records under this alias, on his own label Assylum Effort & on Chicago's seminal Fresh Meat Records. In addition to the amazing interview with him (which will be coming later this week), he put together our cover mix for #5mag212. It's all, he says "very Chicago. I use a lot of tracks from Chicago people, a lot of Chicago people that I really admire" in this mix. "My mix is just riddled with secret messages. If you notice I use a lot of antiphony in my mixes — meaning I find tracks that are like a call and response. I make the tracks talk back and forth. That's just my style. A lot of DJs don't like that because they think it's too showy or the DJ is doing too much. "Personally, I feel like the track itself is not the final product. The mix is the final product. And I will even take it further to say that the blend itself is the final product. And that's not necessarily the case for everybody. A lot of people just wanna show up, play their tracks and highlight their own tracks. I'm a big fan of Spencer Kincy, so I just like to take tracks and make new tracks out of 'em. I like to remix them right in front of you when I'm DJing live. So that's how I am on the mix. "But if you listen to this mix, there are double entendres. I don't know if you noticed the first double entendre, but the first track is called 'Orientation.' It happens to be a favorite track of mine. But 'Orientation' is at the beginning of the mix, the beginning of my mix, the beginning of knowing who Black Sjuan is. "As the track goes on, it blends into Derrick Carter's 'Where U At?' So from 'Orientation' to 'Where U At?' You get it? I do that in all my tracks and all my mixes. There's nothing less than a double entendre. There's always at least a double entendre. "That's just how I am — all my stuff has to mean something. It drives people crazy sometimes but it all means something." 🔴 Follow BLACK SJUAN https://blacksjuan.bandcamp.com/music https://assylumeffortrecords.bandcamp.com https://www.traxsource.com/artist/400952/black-sjuan https://www.instagram.com/black_sjuan_chicago 🔴 Follow 5 MAG Everything: https://5mag.net https://instagram.com/5.magazine https://facebook.com/5chicago https://hearthis.at/5magazine https://soundcloud.com/5magazine https://threads.net/@5.magazine

Premiere: Gratts pres Trackhead T - Empyrean Crossing [Be Strong Be Free]

Incredible dopeness from Belgian producer Gratts, dropping four tracks of banging house music on Klub Romance. Donning a new guise as Trackhead T, Gratts focuses on the spectral and esoteric side of house on this deep club track, "Empyrean Crossing," premiering here for 5 Mag. "Keeping things raw and stripped back, the Belgian challenged himself in the studio to use about 12 channels max per track. The result is Klub Romance, a little nod to his old stomping ground Berlin: 4 flavours of deep club trax with influences ranging from early Felix Da Housecat to Boo Williams or even Schatrax." 🔗 Link: https://www.juno.co.uk/products/gratts-presents-trackhead-t-klub-romance-vinyl/971622-01/ Listen to "Mantra" from the same release via @junodailyonline - https://soundcloud.com/junodailyonline/premiere-gratts-mantra-be-strong-be-free 🎙 Gratts aka Trackhead T - Belgian by birth, a resident of Berlin for 8 years and now living in South Australia, @gratts has been making music under the guise of “various projects and alter egos” for years. I don’t know what the others are, but at least under this name, and over the last few years, his productions have truly shined. “Brighter Future” featuring the vocals of Robert Owens & released on our friend Jorge Caiado‘s Inner Balance label, sets the tone. It’s sunny and consciously optimistic music, crafted by an artist with serious songwriting and arrangement skills. “Sun Circles,” released earlier this year, is a composition so bright you can feel the radiant chords as well as you can hear them...
