Episode 303:  Billionaire investor Ray Dalio has recently penned a piece for LinkedIn entitled “The world has gone mad and the system is broken.” I think Mr. Dalio is wrong.  The world is what it is and if anything is broken it’s Ray Dalio’s economic model.  In this episode, I’ll discuss why the epic confluence of Technology & Demographics (depopulation) are hyper deflationary and why old economic theories of inflation are poor indicators of the economy. ————————————————————–

Episode 198: Link to free PermaEthosTV Q&A session:  https://vimeo.com/ondemand/petvpresentations/176546390?autoplay=1 Oil reach $52/barrel in June and collapsed to $39.50 last week.  Peak summer driving will soon come to an end; Canadian wildfires have burned out; Nigeria is stabling; OPEC isn’t cutting; and most importantly the US shale oil producers are lowering their costs. Looking back to the oil glut of the late 1980s, prices took about a decade to stabilize and rise.  I assume we’ll see something similar during this oil correction.  Prices are likely to swing between $30-$50; with temporary extremes down to the $20s or up to the $70s. Episode 196:  Friday’s jobs report came out extremely strong, making up for May’s abysmal number.  The S&P500 is near record highs because the US economy seems strong and it appears the Fed won’t raise interest rates because of global concerns. But can rates really stay this low if the economy is so well off?  Rates this week undercut the previous low from 2012…when the US was approaching a “fiscal cliff” and President Obama was reelected. Negative and near zero interest rates put the value of capital at below par, suggesting that there are no other “safe” places to store money.  Perhaps there aren’t, corporate profits remain feeble, global growth is at a standstill, and US social unrest (indeed, perhaps the world’s) is akin to the turmoil of 1968. Episode 191:  The European Union has a severe structural problem whether the UK exits or remains. The EU could be a successful trade organization (like NAFTA) if it did not use a single currency.  Theoretically the single currency is appealing because Germany benefits due to a comparative weak currency (thus its exports are “cheaper”) and southern countries (Italy, Spain, etc) benefit from a stronger currency (cheaper imports and lower interest rates). In practice, the system doesn’t work because it defies market principles.  Germany’s economy grows while southern countries fall deeper into a debt death spiral. Episode 178:  Friday the S&P500 rose above its 200dma for the first time this year; however, I remain cautious and expect the market to move lower.  I believe the past month of optimism was founded on rising oil prices, but it’s unlikely that oil has bottomed because global growth remains stagnant.  The problems with growth won’t be resolved by negative interest rates in Japan and Europe; on the contrary, negative rates reveal how deep the problem is. Episode 171:  This downtrend is persistent.  The pre-2016 market personality was one of “buy the dip” and move on to new highs.  That’s no longer the case.  Many sectors of the market are clearly in bear market territory, off their highs by 20-30%…or more.  Even fashionable stocks have been tarnished- Disney down 23%, Apple down 30%, Tesla down 44%, and LinkedIn down 61%. The market personality has clearly shifted to a defensive posture, with rotation into “safe” sectors like Utilities, Consumer Staples, and Telecoms.  [In my opinion, all extremely overvalued.]  This occurs, because large institutional investors can’t simply liquidate their holdings and move to cash.  They’re required to stay invested.  So during troubled times, they hunker down in vanilla positions, hoping to ride out the storm with minimal damage. Episode 164:  The stock market is sitting on a razor’s edge…will it recover and rally up or is it doomed for a bear market?  It’s likely to have a relief rally briefly before it drops to new lows.  BUT NO ONE KNOWS FOR CERTAIN. The market is at an inflection point, full of uncertainly and there is no safe place to hide: GOLD: The fear index is up but Gold can’t get much above $1100. OIL: There’s trouble in the Middle East with the Saudis and Iran but Oil is below $32. COMMODITIES: In general, I believe we’ll see commodities regress back to the mean of pre-Housing Boom prices, ie average prices prior to 2005. US DOLLAR: Countries throughout the world are devaluing their currency and yet the Dollar index can’t break above 100. TREASURES: Despite Fed tightening, the 10yr yield is under 2.15% but if you buy TLT you’re in effect “fighting the Fed”. EARNINGS: Corporate earnings and GDP growth continue to be revised down but the market continues to trade at high valuations. SENTIMENT: The Bears have a slight edge on the Bulls but professional buying of the “dip” seems to be waning. VALUE: Defensive value stocks are trading at extremely high valuations- MO 21PE; PG 19PE. LEADERSHIP: Google, Facebook, Disney, Tesla…are fading. SMALL CAP: The Russell 2000 has fallen below the August flash crash and is testing the lows from the Oct 2014 correction. FOREIGN: Europe, Japan, and Emerging markets are all reeling. Episode 163:  Although I’m an “active” trader, I traded very little in 2015 because I was concerned about the bottom falling out of the stock market.  This was of special concern because the S&P500 had not broken below its 50 day moving average since 2011 but the top appeared to be flattening. In this episode I reflect on the trades I made in 2015 and emphasize the point that being an active trader doesn’t mean that you should irresponsibly trade or speculate in uncertain markets. Episode 160: Much as been made about the demographic decline that is occurring as Baby Boomers age and move into retirement and eventual death.  This is a global phenomenon. I pay close attention to demographic trends and I have spoken often about how low birth rates are stunting global growth.  HOWEVER, I’m not apocalyptic…I leave that to guys like Harry S Dent (The Demographic Cliff) that have made a career of predicting  demographic spurred economic collapse. Episode 158: (Part 2) Bad news is again good news on Wall Street…the indexes were up 1% yesterday on news of slowing US manufacturing and the hint of more stimulus from the European Central Bank…after Fed comments about a strong economy the market was down 1% today. The IMF will include the Chinese Yuan (RMB) in their basket of currencies…and why shouldn’t they?  China is the world’s second largest economy but the Yuan accounts for only about 3% of currency transactions.  Ignore the gloom & doom prognosticators that spread fear about the US Dollar losing its status as THE reserve currency- the US Dollar is at an 8 month high and headed higher [I remain long the US Dollar.]  For the foreseeable future, English will remain the global language of choice and the US Dollar will remain the currency.  [Bitcoin or another crypto currency is more likely to replace the US Dollar than the Yuan.] Brick & Mortar Retail sales were flat and online sales up…that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone but the Media that want to hype the obvious. Episode 154:  In response to listener questions, here are my thoughts on the myRA program- it’s a good account for the beginning SAVER. Track them using simple moving averages. For example, much is being made that 2015Q3 earnings are “beating estimates”…but they’re only beating because the original estimates have been consistently revised DOWN all year long.  S&P500 earnings are in the range of <$110 but last year they were estimated at over $130…that’s a DECLINE not a BEAT.
