A Clockwork Heart | Steampunk Musical

A Clockwork Heart is a steampunk stage musical about creation, love, autonomy and what it means to be alive. Set in a gaslit, gear driven London, it follows Florence, a reclusive inventor, and Rose, the clockwork woman she creates to heal a broken heart. As Rose awakens to the world, wonder turns to longing and difficult questions of freedom and choice emerge. This podcast shares songs, interviews, behind the scenes insights and, eventually, the complete audio of the show. Tender, dark and hopeful, A Clockwork Heart is a story of queer love, survival and found family.

Bought and Sold Acoustic & Live | A Clockwork Heart

Played and Performed by Annie HortonBought and Sold is one of the quietest and most devastating moments in A Clockwork Heart. Stripped back to a slow, aching tempo in A minor, this reprise follows Rose as she confronts her reflection and the brutal reality of what she has become. Alone with an old guitar and a cracked mirror, she sings of lost innocence, stolen choice, and a world that now treats her as an object to be traded. As Minuet watches from the shadows; Rose’s resignation fractures into a raw, desperate refusal. Intimate, sparse, and emotionally exposed, Bought and Sold is the sound of a spirit breaking and still daring to say no.(ROSE retreats behind a changing screen. She re-emerges slowly, her dress is shorter and she is draped in red. She walks to the cracked mirror, stares at herself)(Rose picks up and old guitar and starts to play)Tempo: 85 bpm Key: Am Chords: Am | Dm | E7 | Am | Dm | E7 | Dm | AmBOUGHT AND SOLD (CARIVALE OF FUN REPRISE)Verse 1How, did I find myself here? I just wanted to see the world, Am I nothing more than, Something to be bought and sold.Verse 2Cracked mirror, a broken heart, I just want to go home, But I can’t go back That world’s not mine, I’m now alone.(MINUET re-enters quietly, watches from the doorway. Her expression breaks — just for a moment)OutroSo, I’ll just give myself up, Accept my new loathsome world, I’m nothing more than a plaything, To be bought and sold.…I don’t want to be bought and sold!(Rose sobs. 16. Change / Medley - Instrumental

Change is the moment Rose finally stands at the centre of her own life. No longer a thing to be hidden, sold, or protected into silence, she claims her future with Florence and Minuet beside her. Each voice carries its own reckoning. Rose embraces freedom on her own terms, Minuet finds worth and belonging after survival, and Florence confronts grief, control, and the courage to let go. Together, they choose healing, honesty, and a life shaped by love rather than fear. The Finale Medley follows as celebration and reflection. Fragments of the journey return. First wonder, temptation, spectacle, danger. From First Adventure to Highest Bidder to Carnevale of Fun, the story comes full circle, recontextualised by everything that has been learned and endured. The final return to Change transforms it into a shared anthem of survival, autonomy, and hope.CHANGEIntro (Rose)I am really here, I am truly whole, My heart’s ticking, I hold the key, To my beating soul.Verse 1 (Rose)I am free, To be me, I’m no longer a toy.I’ll live my own life, Make my own plans, My life is now in my two hands.Verse 2 (Minuet)(Minuet takes Roses hand and sings to her)I was alone, Lost myself, I believed, I wasn’t worth a damn, But you saw the real me, And showed me who I really am!Verse 3 (Florence)(Florence takes Rose’s hand and sings to her)I was selfish, I was wrong, I hid you away, For far too long.I was scared and controlling too, Should have let you be the perfect youChorus (Rose, Minuet & Florence)Time for us to change, Let’s make this life our own, It’s no longer about the past, This world’s ours at last.Verse 4 (Rose)Life’s hard, It’s unfair, But I wasn’t on my own. With so many lessons, I’ve learned, I came back to you on my own terms.Verse 5 (Minuet)I had nothing, I had no home, You showed me that I can be more. 15. Home - Instrumental

Home is the aching, fragile heart of Clockwork Heart. As Florence and Minuet fight to bring Rose back from the edge, grief, guilt and love collide in a moment where everything hangs by a single ticking beat. Old wounds are opened, hard truths are spoken, and forgiveness arrives too late and yet exactly when it is needed. Tender, desperate and devastating, Home is not about returning to a place, but about finding the courage to let go, to change, and to love without fear.

    14. The Way Things Were (My Own Terms) - Instrumental

THE WAY THINGS WERE (MY OWN TERMS) is a quiet but defiant turning point. As Rose’s clockwork heart begins to fail, memories of love, safety and betrayal surface. Built to be cherished yet kept hidden, she reflects on the life she shared with Florence and the truth that finally drove her to run. Now, with time slipping away, Rose makes a choice. Not to fade gently, not to return to the past, but to live on her own terms. With Minuet by her side, this track captures forgiveness, courage and the fragile hope that change is still possible, even at the very last tick.THE WAY THINGS WERE (MY OWN TERMS)IntroMy clockwork heart, Is beyond repair, I’m more than I was, There’s so much more, That I want to know and share.Verse 1She built me, With her own hands, But she wouldn’t tell me why.She said she’d love me, Until the day she’d die.Verse 2I loved her, With every tick of my heart, But it was all a lie.And I ran from her, And I never said goodbye.ChorusMy clockwork heart, Still misses her. I’m more than I was, And I can’t go, Back to the way things were.Verse 3We built our life together, In her workshop, We danced all night long. With books and gowns, We’d sing until the day was gone.Verse 4But she was scared, Of the outside world, And kept me hidden inside. And when she finally told me the truth, I died inside.ChorusMy clockwork heart, Might just fade away. Maybe it’s time to say goodbye, Maybe this is my final day?BridgeI should have said goodbye, I need to tell FlorenceI have forgiven her…ChorusMy clockwork heart, Is fading fast,I’m more than I was, And I don’t want, Today to be my last.ChorusMy clockwork heart, Still misses her. I’m more than I was, And I won’t go back, To the way things were.InstrumentalROSE (Weakly)I think my time is running short, my heart could stop any time; I don’t even know if she will see us…(Starts to faulter, Minuet catches her)ROSE (Weakly)But I choose to try! I want to live, not just fade away… Come with me?MINUETAlways… Just show me the way.ROSE (Getting weaker)And if she won’t help… Then we keep going until my last tick is done.MINUET (Holding Rose close)Until your last tick is done.OutroI don’t know, How much time I have left, But look how much we’ve grown and learned.I don’t know if I’ll make it, Let’s try. 13. Innocence Found - Instrumental

Innocence Found is one of the most raw and emotionally confronting moments in A Clockwork Heart. Sung by Minuet, the song is a quiet reckoning with trauma, shame, and survival. As she looks into Rose’s frightened eyes, Minuet is forced to confront her own past, the girl she once was, and the innocence that was taken from her.Rather than turning away, she chooses to stay. The song becomes an act of recognition and protection, a vow to break the cycle and be better than those who harmed her. Innocence Found is not about forgetting what was lost, but about reclaiming agency, compassion, and the courage to care in a world that has shown little mercy.A devastatingly intimate piece about seeing yourself in another’s pain, and choosing to wipe away their tears when no one wiped away yours.

    09. I'm Alive (Reprise) / Highest Bidder - Instrumental

I’m Alive (Reprise) / Highest Bidder captures the dazzling and disturbing moment when Rose steps into the spotlight and discovers the intoxicating power of being seen. What begins as a fragile declaration of life quickly transforms into spectacle as the crowd cheers and Topper turns her awakening into commerce. Brass, beauty, and bravado collide with unease in this electrifying pairing, where applause masks exploitation and innocence meets ambition. The music swells from hopeful self-discovery to a sleazy auction, reminding us that in a world driven by desire and greed, even a beating clockwork heart can be given a price.I’M ALIVE (REPRISE)I… I… I’m… I’m still ticking… I still shine… Clockwork limbs, But thoughts are mine.(Gasps from the crowd)(A smattering of applause – It grows) Turn my key, And I will dance… Give me time, Give me a chance…(The music swells. Rose gains confidence. She spins slowly. The crowd cheers)TOPPER (encouraging)Show them how you move, darling; pull your skirt up a little. 09. I'm Alive (Reprise) / Highest Bidder

08. Alone - Instrumental

Alone is a quiet, devastating lament from Florence, sung in the aftermath of love, loss, and self-imposed isolation. Once, her world was open and shared with Roslyn, a love she believed unbreakable. When that life is taken from her, Florence retreats, closing the door on daylight, connection, and hope. The song moves between memory and regret, revealing how grief led her to create Rose, not as a companion, but as a refuge she could control and hide away. As Florence finally admits her failures as a creator and a lover, Alone becomes a confession of guilt and sorrow, ending with the devastating realisation that shutting out the world has only deepened her loneliness. Intimate, raw, and deeply human, this track sits at the emotional core of Clockwork Heart.

    05. Our Life Instrumental

Our Life is a tender but quietly devastating duet between Florence and Rose, set seven years after Rose’s creation. Florence offers devotion, shelter, and certainty. Rose asks for air, risk, and the right to choose her own path.Key: E Major. Time Signature: 4/4. Tempo: ♩ = 120. 04. I'm Alive - Instrumental

I’m Alive (Instrumental) is the breath held at the heart of A Clockwork Heart. In this pivotal song, Rose opens her eyes for the very first time. Gears turn, pistons throb, and a clockwork voice asks the most human of questions. Who am I. What am I. Am I real.As Florence winds the key and watches her creation stir, wonder and fear intertwine. Rose dances on unsteady feet, marvelling at her own movement, her ticking heart, and the strange new world unfolding before her. Yet beneath the joy lies doubt. Is she a puppet, a plaything, a beautiful object made to be admired and controlled.Through gentle melodies and swelling emotion, I’m Alive captures the fragile instant where creation becomes consciousness. It is a song about awakening, identity, and the terrifying miracle of being alive at all. This episode explores the moment where fantasy tips into reality, and where Florence is forced to confront the truth of what she has made. 02. Make Believe - Instrumental

Make Believe Instrumental VersionMake Believe is a tender, bittersweet song from Clockwork Heart, capturing the quiet loneliness of Florence as she imagines a life that does not yet exist. Set in a gentle C major, the track drifts between comfort and denial, wrapping delicate fantasies around a deeper ache.Through tea shared with an unawakened creation, painted smiles, and clockwork dreams, Florence plays at domestic happiness, pretending that love can be built, gifted, and safely controlled. The music swells with warmth and innocence, but beneath it lies the knowledge that this world is fragile, temporary, and ultimately untrue. At its heart, Make Believe is about longing. It is about the human desire to create something that will never leave, never cry, and never break our hearts. As the dance ends and Rose is placed back on her chair, the illusion fades, leaving only the quiet truth of what has not yet come to life.A soft, haunting moment of hope, denial, and foreshadowing, Make Believe sets the emotional foundation for everything that follows.

As the dance ends and Rose is placed back on her chair, the illusion fades, leaving only the quiet truth of what has not yet come to life.A soft, haunting moment of hope, denial, and foreshadowing, Make Believe sets the emotional foundation for everything that follows.MAKE BELIEVEKey: C Major Chord Progressions:Verse: C | G | Am | F | C | Dm | G | C Chorus: F | G | C | Am | Dm | G | C | C Bridge: Am | F | C | G | Dm | Em | F | G Verse 1Let’s pretend you’re waking up, A clockwork dream, with a gentle touch.ChorusMake believe, oh, make it true, Paint the world in shades of you, Clockwork smiles and silent charms, Held together in my arms.Verse 2We’ll sip tea, we’ll play pretend, You’ll smile at jokes I half-invent.Verse 3Painted dream with painted eyes, A toy that dances through lullabies.ChorusMake believe, oh, make it true, Paint the world in shades of you, You’ll nod and laugh, you’ll never cry, And always stay by my sideBridgeIf I could build a beating soul, You’d stay, you’d never leave, No more make believe, I’d make you whole…(Dance sequence begins – Florence picks up the half-finished Rose starts to dance with her)ChorusMake believe, oh, make it true, Paint the world in shades of you, I’ll give you books and velvet gowns, With coloured and painted crowns.Verse 4And when the sun starts to rise, We’ll go to bed with sad goodbyesOutroBut it’s all just make believe, A dream, a play toy, I’m just naive…(As the dance ends, Florence puts Half-Finished Rose back on the chair)

    01. A Workshop of Shadows - Instrumental

Instrumental version of A Workshop of ShadowsA Workshop of Shadows opens A Clockwork Heart in near darkness, both literal and emotional. Alone in her workshop, Florence sings to the rhythm of ticking time and turning cogs, revealing a life withdrawn from the world and sealed inside grief. What first appears to be a place of safety and careful craft slowly reveals itself as something more fragile, a sanctuary built from loss, memory, and avoidance.Through spare, haunting lyrics, the song introduces Florence as a woman haunted by what she has lost and by the names she cannot forget. The workshop is her refuge, but also her prison. Every wire, spark, and mechanism carries the weight of sorrow she refuses to face. As the music builds, we see that this is not simply a song about isolation, but about the cost of surviving by shutting out the light.

Verse 2Every spark hides sorrow, Every cog a name I knew. Ignoring memories,And rust always hides the truth. ChorusThis is my sanctuary, Where broken dreams still breathe.
