(Bonus Episode) Book 101 Review, in its sixth season, features Jennifer Chassman Browne as my guest.

Jennifer Chassman Browne Disabled writer and storyteller Jenn has lived with Rheumatoid Arthritis since she was six years old. While she was an active and athletic child, as an adult, her arthritis has become more limiting. It’s been a challenging process for her to redefine her sense of self and to accept these limitations, while still trying to move forward and to work around them. Despite her disability, she has been able to remain active. For most of her professional life, Jenn has been an English teacher and school leader, and has loved the time that she spent with the teenagers that she taught, many of whom she still has in her life. For the past seven years, she has worked as a DEI and disability advocate. In her work as a disability advocate and educator, she brings disability awareness into all of the work that she does. Too often, serving people with disabilities is not part of the national conversation. She helps the people with whom she works to consider how we can create a world that is more inclusive of all people, including people with disabilities. Jenn works to educate people about the strengths and gifts that people with disabilities have. Everyone has something that limits them, and success asks that we simply move forward even with the limitations that we have. That said, we need allies, systems, and structures that ensure our inclusion and success. Jenn has also earned certification as a listener poet and is invested in working with organizations to use the listener poet process as part of a support system for those in careers with a high emotional demand. Jenn loves writing, and collaborated with her husband, Kevin, on a poetry collection last year. She most enjoys spending time with her sweetie and her pup, Indy, at home on the central coast of California. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

(Bonus Episode) Book 101 Review, in its sixth season, features Sayima as my guest.

Sayima . Stillness & Poetry I’m Sayima, a Tanzanian-born writer currently living in France. My work is rooted in emotional healing, identity and the quiet power of softness in a performance-driven world. My debut poetry collection, ‘heart based’, reflects my own experience, from navigating cultural and religious expectations of my country of origin to rebuilding a sense of inner belonging across cultures, languages and countries that I moved to. These poems began as journal entries written in moments that later became blessings in disguise, leading me to question who I truly was if I let go of everything that once defined me. I’ve shared ‘heart based’ through a tour across France, in English-language bookstores and at literary festivals like La Comédie du Livre in Montpellier (the biggest literary festival in the country), where I connected with readers from around the world. That experience showed me how the book’s themes resonate with people across different cultures. My hope is for ‘heart based’ to spark a meaningful dialogue and connection, inviting listeners to engage with its themes. Whenever preferred, it would be lovely to send you a copy for your honest reflection and review. Let me know what works for you. Looking forward to hearing from you. Learn more about your ad choices. Lastly, you are walked through original spells that provide an eclectic viewpoint of magical concepts such as summonings, immortality and the aforementioned invisibility in a surprisingly applicable and practical manner. Her perspective emphasizes that growth is rarely linear; it is shaped by disruption, reflection, and reinvention. Through analytical discussion and personal insight, the episode highlights how individuals reconstruct identity after challenge. The conversation also dissects the role of mindset in shaping outcomes. Autumn articulates how belief systems influence behavior patterns and how self-awareness becomes the catalyst for transformation. Rather than offering abstract motivation, she provides structured reflection—encouraging listeners to interrogate their assumptions and refine their internal narrative. (Bonus Episode) Abstract Essay in its sixth season, features Dr. Jeffrey Bone as my guest.

Jeffrey Bone Dr. Jeffrey Bone is a chronic illness mentor, living with Common Variable Immune Deficiency, podcast host, and author of two collections of poetry, coloring books, and a chronic illness journal. For more than two decades, Jeff has worked as a mental health specialist helping people navigate the emotional terrain of chronic pain and illness. Day after day he sat with clients whose bodies had betrayed them, people trying to build meaningful lives in bodies that would not cooperate. He helped them face fear, uncertainty, grief, and the quiet loneliness that often comes with long-term illness. Then life asked him to walk the same road. Jeff lives with Common Variable Immune Deficiency, a rare immune disorder that requires ongoing treatment and brings the same fatigue, uncertainty, and physical limitations that many of his patients face. Suddenly the theories were no longer just ideas discussed in a therapy room. What do you do when your body stops being reliable. How do you build a life when health is uncertain. How do you keep meaning when plans collapse. Instead of stepping away from the work, Jeff stepped deeper into it. He began writing poetry to give shape to experiences that medicine could not fix. He wrote guided meditations for people lying awake with pain. He created conversations about the psychological reality of chronic illness that rarely get talked about openly. His work blends existential psychology, acceptance based therapies, and the raw honesty that comes from living inside the problem rather than observing it from the outside. Today Jeff shares those ideas through books, guided meditations, and his podcast, helping people understand that chronic illness is not only a medical experience. It is an existential one. It raises questions about identity, meaning, isolation, freedom, and how to build a life when the body is no longer predictable. On a podcast, Jeff brings a rare perspective. He is both the mental health specialist and the patient. He understands the science of pain and the philosophy of suffering, but he also knows what it feels like to sit in the infusion chair, to face uncertainty about the future, and to rebuild a life around new limits. Mickie Kennedy Award winning gay poet writing about childhood trauma, mental illness, survival, and healing. Mickie Kennedy is a gay poet whose life spans three distinct chapters that resonate deeply with listeners. A violent childhood marked by silence and fear. An adolescence shaped by the AIDS crisis, where desire and danger were inseparable. And a present grounded in reflection, healing, and survival. He doesn’t speak as an expert offering solutions. He speaks as someone who lived through it and learned how to name it later. What makes Mickie a strong podcast guest is his ability to talk about trauma without turning it into spectacle. He understands how to hold difficult material with care, humor, and clarity, making space for listeners who may recognize their own histories in his. His conversations often open into discussions about memory, masculinity, queerness, family systems, and what healing actually looks like over decades, not months. Hosts who book Mickie get a guest who is thoughtful, emotionally literate, and grounded. Polemics: Political Poems & Prose  The collection Polemics: Political Poems & Prose takes the reader on a disturbing, wide-eyed ride through the years 2016-2025 in the United States. It highlights the political nightmares and triumphs, both familiar and forgotten, experienced by Americans during this time.  To endure the tempest of the current era, Polemics clings faithfully to old-school liberal themes. These are delivered as rhyme, essay and fiction. Its affectionately nostalgic patriotism will resonate with anyone, who has been paying attention long enough to notice, that things have changed. And not for the better. As Americans try to navigate an America they have never seen before-an America they barely recognize-Polemics will serve as an anthem, an incantation, and a call to action. This collection aims to guide their forlorn liberal souls through dark times, toward something better. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Poetry is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic language to evoke emotion, convey meaning, and explore ideas beyond the limits of ordinary speech.

Poetry is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic language to capture emotion, shape meaning, and illuminate human experience in its most concentrated form. Through imagery, metaphor, and carefully chosen sounds, poetry transforms ordinary words into expressions that resonate beyond their literal definitions. It does not simply tell a story or present an idea; it invites reflection, allowing readers to engage with feeling, memory, and imagination at the same time. By embracing ambiguity and depth, poetry creates space for personal interpretation and emotional connection. Its enduring power lies in its ability to say more with less, turning language into an art that speaks directly to the inner life of the reader. Learn more about your ad choices. (Bonus Episode) Abstract Essay in its Fifth season, featuring Peter Gunn as my guest.

Peter Gunn Poet/Author Peter Gunn U.S. Air Force vet, avid bodybuilder, lead guitarist for a band called The Angellics, coffee connoisseur, and poet who strives to bring epic poetry and literature craftsmanship back from the past. -At 7 years old, I had succumbed to heat stroke and experienced a brief NDE where an angel told me I had to go back because my job wasn't done. Ever since then, it has steered my life’s journey in a way to serve and give back to humanity. -At 12 years old, I had to deal with morbid childhood obesity. -Honorably served 20 years in the US Air Force -When I had my daughter in 2010 I wanted to enroll her into my love of classic poetry but soon saw that the feminine was left out of the hero's journey and decided to start writing The Amazons series to alleviate that discrepancy and I also invented LLP Linked -Lyrical-Poetry to bring a more modern feel to the story that will make it easier for Gen Z, and Gen Alpha to read. -In 2020, when Covid hit, it woke me up to how so many people are asleep in the world, so that is when I decided to start the Sigma Squad Graphic novel series. Which is based on ancient Gnostic gospels and texts about God splitting his angels into two halves one male and one female to exist in human bodies as entities known as Aeons and during Revelations, God decides to send a specialized more powerful group of Aeons to wage war on the members of the Deep State by killing them off one by one. -July 2025 I was asked to join a group of musicians from Germany after working with them on other projects to form a band. We are going to call ourselves The Angellics, and we are currently in production of our first album. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This episode invites listeners into a space where language is felt rather than solved, and where emotion, rhythm, and silence carry as much weight as literal meaning. By embracing ambiguity and abstraction, the episode challenges the instinct to decode every line, encouraging instead a deeper, more personal engagement with poetic expression. When Meaning Refuses to Be Explained positions poetry not as a puzzle to be answered, but as an experience to be lived—affirming that some truths are best encountered through intuition, reflection, and resonance rather than explanation. Autumn Williams Autumn Williams Poetry When the chronic illness I have, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), worsened to the point that I became mostly bedbound, I discovered poetry as a way to transform challenging experiences into universal reflections on time, loss, and hope. My journey from those first poems, to self-publishing a Kirkus-praised, #1 Best Selling poetry collection, "Clouds on the Ground" (released November 7th, 2024), and chapbook "WAVES", demonstrates the power of creative expression to find beauty in life's difficult seasons. I currently live in Texas with my husband and our children. Through my life experiences, I bring authentic conversations about resilience, the artistic process, and finding meaning through creative work. My accessible poetry and personal story resonate with listeners who are facing their own challenges, or are seeking creative outlets during difficult times. My interests include writing and reading poetry, listening to music, and spending time with my family. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

(Bonus Episode) Book 101 Review, in its fifth season, features Jonathan Hutton Writer, paraglider pilot, rare cancer survivor as my guest.

Jonathan Hutton Writer, paraglider pilot, rare cancer survivor I knew I wanted to learn how to fly after dabbling in skydiving 13 some years ago. The freedom of flying a canopy - being suspended in the air, seeing the world from a completely different perspective - changed something in me. In a similar way, living through a decade with recurrent and rare head/neck cancer has galvanized me to see life, work, priorities through a new lens. I had no idea I was even capable of writing a book, but I’ve come to understand that sitting with adversity, reflecting on the challenges in your life, that there’s healing to be found there. Healing - through writing, sharing, challenging yourself to do that big, improbable thing now - is something you can find, even if your disease has no cure. Life is short, so learn how to fly, whatever ‘flying’ is for you. I have learned so much about what goes into writing a book as a first-time author, what it’s like to hire and work with an editor, how the whole process will change you. I believe these stories will be useful to aspiring authors, people who are trying to find their voice, but uncertain on how to proceed. I am deeply fortunate to still be alive, having navigated not only rare, but life altering side effects from cancer treatment - unexpected outcomes that required reconstructive surgery. I tell many of these stories in the book, and speak freely about them in general, because I know just how unmooring having your body altered in this way can be. I’ve arrived at this place where I know more about free flap reconstructions than most, which is strange, but also inspiring; I am inspired by the providers who do this work, who understand the trade-offs and difficult recoveries their patients face. I’ve met a lot of cancer survivors over the years, people who have suffered, some who found cures, some who are still looking for healing and meaning amidst hardship. In our 4,000 weeks alive, which could very well be less, we have so many choices and pathways, so much vying for our attention. The stories we tell, the ones we listen to, our ability to be present, is a gift. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. (Bonus Episode)Music 101, now in its third season, features The Art of the Opening Track: 1970s Rock’s Most Explosive Album Starters.

The needle hits the vinyl, and with a crackle of anticipation, the 1970s rock album announces itself not with a gentle introduction, but with a declaration of intent. This was the decade where the opening track became an explosive art form, a concentrated blast designed to seize the listener by the collar and define the entire sonic journey to come. From the primal, stadium-shaking riff of Led Zeppelin’s "Black Dog" to the sleek, paranoid overture of The Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar," these were more than just songs; they were opening statements. They could be the complex, virtuosic fury of Queen's "Brighton Rock," a gauntlet thrown down to aspiring musicians, or the raw, jet-fueled ignition of Iggy and the Stooges' "Search and Destroy," a three-minute manifesto of punk nihilism years before its time. In an era of album-oriented rock, the first track was the gateway, and 197s artists mastered the craft of making it unforgettable, explosive, and utterly undeniable. Hosted on Acast.
