Photo Tip: Storytelling in Photography
Hello Photo Adventurers! If you’re anything like me, it’s hard not to get excited to hit the trail. If you’re on a photo trek, consider telling your story by documenting your adventure. In this short video, I introduce my approach to one of my favorite winter photo treks to Portage Glacier! Points for telling your story: Consider sharing the preparation of your trek or trip, like packing and logistics. Document the travel, you may not use it, but at least you have it should anything exciting happen along the way that really makes the adventure noteworthy. Don’t forget the establishing shots that mark the beginning of your adventure. What does all the gear look like? What’s the weather like? Are there any landmarks that identify your destination or location? How about signage? While you’re photographing en route to your final destination, don’t forget some trail shots. If your trek is going to be a workout, it’s always fun to show how dirty we get along the way! You’ve arrived at the big location! If you’re the first one on there, sometimes getting a shot of the landscape untouched will add more to your story. After all the beautiful shots have been taken… Don’t forget to have a little fun by taking selfies, hero shots, and the like. Always remember the beginning, middle, and end. Humanize your adventure, because that authenticity really connects people to the experience and the winning photo. Have a tip I missed? Please share in the comment section below. – Thanks, Scott!

Sanity Saver: Moose in Forest
Filmed in Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Alaska Two young bull moose at play in the forest, while a mature adult bull pursues a cow. We while out looking for moose to film, it wasn't long before we found ourselves surrounded by moose. At this location, we never moved more than maybe 15 feet the entire time. Interested in great Alaska Photo Tours or film and photography locations, visit http://scottslone.com or call Scott at 907-331-436

SanitySaver: Shelter from the Storm
Sanity Saver: Shelter from the Storm Traditionally the Sanity Savers were produced from unused footage and calming soundtracks featuring independent music artists. This past summer a fellow photographer David Taylor and I found ourselves pinned down in a tent high up in the mountains during a lightning storm. It’s seriously an unnerving situation. The questions and strategies rolled out like – Do we descend down the mountain in heavy downpour on very wet terrain, risk falling or being struck? Do we stay put in a tent surrounded by aluminum rods? Eventually we opted for the later, hoping the air mattresses we were sitting on would isolate us from being grounded. Crazy as that sounds, I don’t think there was a real win situation. Sitting there in the tent I decided to save my sanity and film the experience, which I think now actually feels more calm than we felt at the time.

Behind the Lens: Create Space
Behind the Lens: Create space in your life Something a bit different, but felt it was worth sharing. Hiking out of the Chugach after a long afternoon observing moose and capturing some great moments, I had a few thoughts I wanted to share. (Give it a watch) Yes, I know, it's sentimental. And I do realize how blessed I am in the grand scheme of things, but what is it I'm doing here on Alaska HDTV? In retrospect I could have created any travel blog I wanted, featuring various worldly places and spaces, and there's nothing wrong with that. Alaska to me is about our mountain air, grand spaces, and hospitality you receive at a getaway down some long country road, which all lures me out time and time again. I've learned we're all malnourished spiritually from time to time or all the time, lacking a desperate need for Space and Authenticity. Our habitat is what guides and forms us as humans. If there is one thing I want you to extract from everything here at Alaska HDTV - Create space in your life and move through it often. Serenity of the spirit cannot be achieved until we become masters of our own action and attitudes. My intention here is to remind all of us to free up the emotional space in your life. It's been a theme for me lately - making room for good things to move into my life. It's out there in the wide open spaces I feel we can find our center when we're lost. Deep perhaps.. I figured it was worth putting out there. I suppose this is what I've done through my craft here, celebrate that personal space we all need. In the end I've surrounded myself with like-minded friends like you, and seen some incredible spaces! Thank you and Cheers, -Scott

Music Video: Static Cycle | Alaska Music Artist [HD]
While Alaska’s political noise often steals the spotlight, our own Alternative Rock Trio Static Cycle is rocking our State onto center stage. These guys have become one of my favorite current and local bands! The music video for “Inside This World of Mine” really brings it all together – Shot in the Chena Hot Springs Ice Museum ads to the electrifying vibe and message of the song, which also features Bristol Palin. Song writer Navarre say: “When I wrote the lyrics to the single ‘Inside This World Of Mine’ I felt like we were going to be conducting the world through that song,”. “It’s about that point in life when you wake up and have great confidence in yourself, where you’ve broken down all the barriers and nothing can stop you. So thematically, it’s about knowing we’ll never give up on the world,” he adds. “The bridge specifically references Alaska’s weather; I’m drawing a parallel to life. Alaska’s weather ranges from the blistering cold winter to the beautiful sunshine of the summer. Likewise, life can seem dark and cold at times but always ends up working out or being ‘summer’ just in time.” As much as I’m a music guy, Static Cycle taps into my love of lyrics – if you can’t write I’m probably not listening. They’ve already been burning up the music scene nationally, touring up to 14 states last year! If you haven’t see their show, don’t miss out – visit their website staticcycle.com to keep yourself up to date. Their new album “Hydrate” is now available in iTunes! Rock on! HIke of the Week | Reed Lakes [HD]
Reed Lakes is a top notch hike located just an hour north of Anchorage. Whether you’re a Photographer or Hiker, this hike offers incredible high alpine terrain, and views that have kept me coming back here for years. Hike details: 4.5 miles one way 1,850 foot elevation gain from trail head to upper Reed lake. A solid pair of hiking shoes or boots with good ankle support are required for this hike. Hiking poles good, but not required. Varied terrain. Trail is very well established and in good condition generally speaking. First two miles is flat wide and maintained trail, from there you gain elevation quickly navigating boulders and at times slippery mud. It’s a good hike, take your time and it’s worth the rewards! Review: Hi-Tec Yeti 600i boots [HD]
Yeti 600i boots Gear Review I really like the new Yeti 600i Boots, over the years I've worn several brands of boots in the back country of Alaska, I keep coming back to Hi-Tec. As of today the Yeti 600i boots so far have exceeded my expectations, in performance and weight. Keep an eye out in this new season of Alaska HDTV for the boots in action, and I'll be offering a followup to this review. One of my compliments to Hi-Tec is their attention to weight and durability, which includes handling the weather Alaska deals us out in the back country. Happy Hiking! Scott FTC Disclosure: With few exceptions, I only review products that I’m interested in purchasing, and I feature products as news items that are a) exciting to me, b) innovative, c) overwhelmingly newsworthy, or d) entertaining. If you think your product fits in this category, you can email me.

What does Alaska mean to you? (HD)
Come on now, Social! Like most of us, I'm usually connected online! I'll wake up in the morning, check my e-mail, facebook, and twitter stream, at work it's either research or social media, when I'm mobile it's my iPhone! I'm a social person by nature and it's the old saying "Everyone has a story" that fuels my passion of traveling around Alaska and share my experiences with you all. I love hearing stories! I want us all to reclaim the roots of our social culture. Don't get me wrong, I dig social media as one of the most awesome communication tools in our society. However, I can't help notice the majority still place value on the follow me, friend me, like me, and become a fan of me, which appears to have taken a precedence over the cold call "Hello, what's your story?" or the like! So this is video was my attempt at bringing it back home. I had a blast out on the streets asking people one simple question "What does Alaska mean to you?" and it was this experience that I learned how many great people I have yet to meet. So my friends... Be Bold! To the stranger next to you say "Hi" and strike up a conversation, you'll otherwise never know what you could be missing. Cheers, Scott
