Built in 1887 this was an amazing landmark to every Jews who landed in NY.  This would not have been possible in their Eastern European world, so it was not just another synagogue but a symbol of the new place they now called home.  America.

One of the greatest tragedies in Jewish history took place in 1492, just as Columbus set sail to the New World. It was the end of the world as we knew it, for Jews who had lived in Spain for hundreds and even longer than 1000 years.  They were not allowed to take anything with them, and left their property, gold and silver behind.  Jews rich and poor began a coherced journey that many did not survive.
