From Folklore to the Future
It seems that wherever I go in Bosnia and Herzegovina, traditional skills and cultural activities are slowly disappearing. From making instruments, to dancing and much more, the latest generations of young people, don't seem interested, and that could mean a massive impact on the heritage of not only this misunderstood country but also the wider region.I talk to Nemanja Knežević, to learn a little about the challenges he faces as the director of Banja Luka's biggest traditional dance ensemble.Check out the website of Ensemble Veselin Mašlese. Veselin Mašlese on YouTube.Veselin Mašlese on Instagram. In the interview we mention Efie Derksen, a lady from the Netherlands who is also passionate about protecting local folklore and helping to promote its survival.Check out this Podcast to find out more. The Concept of Ćejf :
In This Episode of the podcast I have the pleasure of speaking with Nermin Numić, the co-owner and founder of a travel agency in Sarajevo called Ćejf, which is based on this very concept. “Numa” (thats his nickname) explained that the word Ćejf is derived from the Arabic word kayf, which means pleasure. It's a way of life that is all about finding pleasure in the small things. What's unique about Ćejf is that it's deeply personal and individual. Everyone has their own definition of what brings them pleasure and what makes them happy. In Sarajevo, where Numa is from, Ćejf is a way of life that is respected and cherished by everyone. If someone is enjoying their own personal Ćejf, like smoking a cigarette or sipping on a cup of coffee, it's respected by others and not disrupted. The concept of Ćejf is more than just living in the moment or enjoying life's pleasures. It's a way of life that is deeply ingrained in the culture of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It's a reminder to slow down and appreciate the little things in life that can bring us joy and happiness. It's about taking the time to connect with others over a cup of coffee or a meal and enjoying their company.🏴 An Englishman in the Balkans 🇧🇦 is a reader-supported publication.Get full access to 🏴 An Englishman in the Balkans 🇧🇦 at www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com/subscribe To hear more, visit www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com

A Mexican in Banja Luka
In this episode Tamara and I visit “Chiquita”, a Mexican restaurant in Hanište, Banja Luka. Chiquita is the only venue that serves Authentic Mexican cuisine in the city. Yes, there are Mexican recipes featured on our restaurants menus, but to be honest they really don’t “cut the mustard”. Adriana, who co-owns this small restaurant, tells us about the influences she has brought to Banja Luka as well as the similarities in culture, historical links and the food she prepares. World Radio Day 2022
Hello and welcome to this week's post, which is audio based. Why? Well this 13th February is World Radio Day.As you will know from following the blog, plus my content on social platforms, I have always been passionate about radio. In fact, I came to Bosnia and Herzegovina back in 1998, to launch a radio station!Back to this post. My initial plan was to write about the history of this UN launched project, but, by pure happenstance, an old radio buddy of mine who is in Canada, and runs a community station there, contacted me and asked if we could chat about radio for his programme on Midtown Radio.I simply couldn’t refuse, so here’s David Harmes, chatting with me about radio and why its so important a medium.Click on the player at the top of this post to listen :) This podcast is both a fun and serious conversation about community radio.I (we) hope you enjoy it.So grab a tea of coffee and put 30 or so minutes aside to join us.What is World Radio Day?World Radio Day 2022 will be celebrated once again on the 13th of February. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) proclaimed the event at their 36th Conference after it was put forward as an idea by the Kingdom of Spain. The purpose of World Radio Day is to raise greater awareness among the public and the media of the importance of radio. This is done in the hope that we can encourage decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio. World Radio Day brings people and communities from all backgrounds together in order to create dialogue for positive change. Radio is also a fantastic way to provide democratic debate over issues such as violence and political arguments. It can promote and raise awareness among old and new listeners! The 2022 edition of World Radio Day is based around 3 sub-themes:Evolution - The world is always changing, so radio evolves along with it. This refers to the resilience and sustainability of radio!Innovation - The world is always changing, so radio adapts and innovates. Radio has had to adapt to new technology to remain the go-to medium of mobility, accessible to everyone, everywhere!Connection - The world is always changing, so radio connects. This sub-theme refers to radio's services to our society!Top 5 Facts about the Radio* Physicist Heinrich Hertz was the first person to prove that radio waves exist.* A ‘broadcast’ only occurs when a radio signal is sent to many receivers at once.* The first radio messages were one-way and were an attempt to replace telegraph messages.* FM radio began in 1939.* There are almost 15,000 radio stations alone in the USA.Midtown Radio.Website:Instagram:Twitter:Facebook:Get full access to 🏴 An Englishman in the Balkans 🇧🇦 at www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com/subscribe To hear more, visit www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com

SpeedQueen in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Between 2002 and 2004, a successful Club in Leeds UK, called SpeedQueen, temporarily set up in the north west of Bosnia and Herzegovina to bring a new experience to the youth of the area.NATO at that time had a byline for their operation. It was “Mir i Tolerancija”, or “Peace and Tolerance”SpeedQueen however, really hit the mark with youth audiences with their “Harmonija I Fantazija” or “Harmony and Fantasy”.This podcast starts to tell that story.I think one of the biggest experiences that we had was, we got asked by NATO, by the Stabilisation Force– if we would go and work in Bosnia, because, there was a guy there in the British Army who read about the kind of work we were doing in Leeds, in terms of integration. And he’d started a program to try and integrate the young displaced people after the war because there'd been this huge genocide in Bosnia years previously. And, he'd told us that the older generation were even more prejudiced after the war, like more set in their ways, and they were trying to, they were trying to integrate the youth through music. and he asked if we would go out there, like for ten days, and run some club nights where they were gonna try and integrate the youth and we said yeah..Suzy Mason, SpeedQueen Leeds 2002.If you would like to support our podcast you can, by maybe buying us a coffee or a sandwich?Oh, and you can also share the newsletter with friends, relatives and colleagues using the button below.Read More About SpeedQueen in Bosnia on Our Blog Post at Living in Bosnia and HerzegovinaAsk us any questions or give a suggestion for a Podcast.E-Mail us at [email protected] full access to 🏴 An Englishman in the Balkans 🇧🇦 at www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com/subscribe To hear more, visit www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com

Innovative Slow Tourism
Some time ago, I recorded a short interview for a future podcast, with Elizabeth O’Neill, an Australian lady, who with her husband Gerard, were currently visiting the Western Balkans. She told me that they “Work Away”. They get themselves to their chosen destination country, and then work for a maximum of 20 hours a week in return for accommodation and food. I was intrigued as to how they found where work was offered, and what they might be required to do. After all Elizabeth and her husband were “early retirees”, (her words), so heavy manual labouring might be a bit too much? They use a website, Work Away, where they can find opportunities that might suit them, and where their questions are answered. From listening to Elizabeth, it made me think that this form of travelling fitted under the banner of “Slow Tourism”, as they were immersing themselves into the culture and environment wherever they stayed, experiencing things they would otherwise not have the opportunity to. To find out more about how Elizabeth experiences both “work” and “play” on her travels with her husband, check out her blog posts from Corfu and Croatia HERE . I checked the Work Away site and was very pleasantly surprised to see there are. You can check the BiH opportunities HERE. Although, personally I wouldn’t want to “Work Away”, I would be really interested about your thoughts. If you enjoy the podcast please subscribe/follow and share with a friend! If you would like to support our podcast you can, by maybe buying us a coffee or a sandwich?https://buymeacoffee.com/davidbaileyRead Our Blog at Living in Bosnia and HerzegovinaFacebook Page https://www.facebook.com/lifeinbosniaandherzegovinaInstagram: @life_in_bihAsk us any questions or give a suggestion for a Podcast.Come and visit us and holiday in Bosnia and Herzegovina.E-Mail us at [email protected] full access to 🏴 An Englishman in the Balkans 🇧🇦 at www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com/subscribe To hear more, visit www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com

Traditional Folklore Dancing in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Hello and welcome to the living in Bosnia and Herzegovina podcast. A podcast that tells stories from this much misunderstood country. In today's episode, we'll be finding out more about folklore, and in particular, traditional dancing. Back in 2019, I became aware of a young lady from South Holland, who had been dancing with a folklore ensemble in the nearby city of Banja Luka. She was at that time starting to make a film about Bosnian folk dancing, because she felt that these traditions might be starting to disappear, and she wanted to preserve that experience for future generations. So in the COVID world of early 2021, I have caught up with Efie Derksen to find out more.David:Efie, you're in the Netherlands, I'm here in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I bumped into you quite randomly on the internet, and I thought, "What an amazing story." So we've never really met in real life. So if we did, my first question to you would be, "Who is Efie?"Efie:Yeah, that's a good question. I am very jealous because you are there. I miss it so much to be in Bosnia. But, I'm Efie, I'm a Dutch woman and there is no genetical link with the former of Yugoslavia, but for me it's something I grew up with. So it was in our home. We always listened Balkan music. And first, your question, who is Efie? I'm a lot of things. I'm a nurse, and I'm making a from my heart. I'm not a filmmaker. So it's just something that I wanted to do, to preserve what we can find now.David:I read a little bit about you, and you said that your parents are both from the Netherlands, were into folklore themselves. But they met not in the Netherlands, I understand, but somewhere close to here as well.Efie:Yeah, it's true. They met in Hungary. My dad is a musician, he always was, and he loved music from the Balkans. It was just that feeling, and the new music, and the songs. So he would travel to the Balkans to learn from the musicians there. And my mother was a folk dancer, and in that years, I'm talking about '70s early '80s, I don't know. It was very popular in Holland to do folk dancing. So there were courses, and she went to a course in Hungary. There was just like a folk festival, and my dad also was travelling there, and he came to play, and she came to dance, and then they met like two Dutch people and the one folk festival in Hungary, so it's funny. Yeah.David:What made you want to come to the Balkans, and in particular Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today for example, we're talking about the wonders of the country, and yet I was just before talking to you, dropping in on a seminar to try and encourage tourism, and to try and encourage visitors to come here, and it's been an uphill struggle, always is, and always has been an uphill struggle. What made you want to come to this country? This very misunderstood country in Southeast Europe.Efie:Well, in the first place, I had the culture in my heart. The songs, and I never was interested in... Well, I was interested, but I never cared about the war stories, because I think that's a big problem. People still think like, "Is it safe going to Bosnia, or Serbia because of the war?" But I think for me, it's the people that I come for. They are so open, and loving and in particular Bosnian people. Because I think in history, they were always the ones in the middle. They were always the ones that people came to attack, or how do you say it? And I think they are more vulnerable, I guess, they are more open. They are more warm. You feel at home when you come there, it's just the second home, and they embrace you.Efie:And even after all those crazy things that happened in that country with all those ethnic groups, they are just still open. And beside that, when people come, maybe the first thing they need to know, it's a beautiful country. It's beautiful nature. It's beautiful. The food is really... I see you are very lucky. You can eat a...

Rebuilding the Ferhadija Mosque in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Today it's a bit of a look back episode, to an interview I did in 2016, when the Ferhadija Mosque in Banja Luka was re-opened after some 23 years. The Ferhadija Mosque in Banja Luka was originally commissioned by, Ferhat Pasha Sokolovic and built in 1579. It stood near the centre of Banja Luka until the night of 6–7 May 1993, some 27 years ago, when it was destroyed by explosion. The Ferhadija's location remained destroyed for these years and some said that it would never be rebuilt, but rebuilt it was. There were a lot of people involved in the rebuilding, a lot of unsung heroes, and one of those unsung heroes is a Brit like me.His name is Donald Reeves and he has an NGO called the Soul of Europe. Donald came back to Banja Luka to attend the opening back in 2016. I caught up with him in a hotel coffee bar in Banja Luka and I wanted to find out more about how difficult it had been to get the mosque rebuilt and his thoughts on peace building and reconciliation here in the Western Balkans. But before I started talking to Donald, I really didn't know much about him apart from what I found on Twitter. It said he was a maverick priest, a writer, a broadcaster, a peace builder, generally a nuisance, a visionary with attitude, and also a very dangerous man.So why a very dangerous man when it comes to something like peace building?READ OUR BLOGPOST ABOUT REBUILDING THE FERHADIJAIf you enjoy the podcast please subscribe/follow and share with a friend! If you would like to support our podcast you can, by maybe buying us a coffee or a sandwich?https://www.paypal.com/davidbaileymbe (https://www.paypal.com/davidbaileymbe)Read Our Blog at https://livinginbosniaandherzegovina.com/ (Living in Bosnia and Herzegovina)Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/lifeinbosniaandherzegovina (https://www.facebook.com/lifeinbosniaandherzegovina)Instagram: @https://www.instagram.com/lifeinbosniaandherzegovina/ (lifeinbosniaandherzegovina)Ask us any questions or give a suggestion for a Podcast.Come and visit us and holiday in Bosnia and Herzegovina.E-Mail us at [email protected] this podcastGet full access to 🏴 An Englishman in the Balkans 🇧🇦 at www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com/subscribe This is a public episode. Finding out about Spomenik in the former Yugoslavia
In this edition of the Podcast, I’ll be focussing on Spomenik. Spomenik are large monuments from the former Yugoslavia, and you see them across the whole of the Western Balkans and in particular here in Bosnia and Herzegovina.Normally, they're massive structures built out of concrete, and I think the architectural design is called “Brutalism” but they are very, very impressive. The Spomenik Database can be accessed at https://spomenikdatabas.org (https://spomenikdatabas.org).If you enjoy the podcast please subscribe/follow and share with a friend! A Mexican Returns to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Hello and welcome to this edition of the Podcast. In this episode, I catch up with Jose Angelo Gallegos a YouTuber and Filmmaker from California. Last year I interviewed Jose, who had arrived in Banja Luka, having previously produced and published "Bitter Sweet Bosnia", his first film about BiH on YouTube. We talked about filmmaking, social media, the region, BIH AND much more. Especially what attracted a Mexican American to come to this part of the world. I posted the interview here on my podcast. So it was a real treat, to find out that Jose (whose latest project is a film about Albania), was coming back to Banja Luka. We met again, and spend a fast and furious 20 hour "Creativity Camp" in the village. Discussing many Tech Tips and Tricks, and for me, the chance to fly a Pro Drone for the first time. Some Rakija was consumed 😀 We took time to sit down and share the story with you. Finding Out About Nick Semwogerere
This episode is a somewhat collaborative episode between The Balkan Adventures Podcast and Balkan Stories. My good friend and Vienna based blogger, Christoph Baumgarten caught up with Nick Semwogerere, a Londoner and Musician to find out why Nick had somewhat "fallen in love" with Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans in general.Nick has had a passion for writing since a young age. Initially starting with poetry, this led on to writing song lyrics when he got into music. During media studies and English literature at college he found he had a writing style that flowed nicely.Nick got an A* in oral English when he left high school as expressing himself verbally and creatively has always been something that he has really enjoyed, which upon reflection influenced him to transfer these skills into ESL teaching. Gorstak Pivo - Craft Beer in Bosnia and Herzegovina
I like to seek out success stories from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Why? Because this beautiful country and it's everyday citizens deserve it. After all, just use your favourite browser and search Bosnia (or any combination theteof) and you'll see what I mean. So in this episode I catch up with Nikola Galić from Banja Luka, who has turned his hobby of home brewing into what he hopes will become a commercial success. Nikola tells me about why he started, how he chose the name "Highlander" and what he does to overcome the pervading negativity in the country. As a result of an Instagram post "teasing" this podcast, Nikola has already had an enquiry about his product from the UK. How cool is that? Walking from Amsterdam to Sarajevo

Because it's slow, because it's a perfect way to really see a country. To feel and experience. Because she feels good, being "on the road". And because she thought it would be a good idea to (re)discover her own country, before heading off to the Balkans.Get full access to 🏴 An Englishman in the Balkans 🇧🇦 at www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com/subscribe To hear more, visit www.anenglishmaninthebalkans.com
