People are infinitely interesting. I sit down to learn more about people that interest me on a regular basis and record their entertaining stories here. This is also one of the key reasons I run Beers With Mates as well - to make it a habit to meet more interesting people from all walks of life each month. Some of the people featured here are sportspeople, artists and musicians. Others are entrepreneurs, business leaders or interesting individuals just doing their thing in the career they love, or they're on their path to finding it.To find out more, go to www.andoandco.com/podcast

It's not every day you get to meet a rocket scientist but I was lucky to live in the same building as one! After a few interesting chats about space in the lift, we decided it was time to record a podcast. In the weeks after we spoke, Jodi launched her business, Rocket Fast Drones. I hope you enjoy this very inspiring chat with Joni Sytsma, the rocket scientist who grew up and studied in Florida but is well on her way to achieving her combined goals of drawing more young people into STEM while making Australia a better place, right here from Brissie :)

34. Candice Bould - The Lounge & Co Salons
Candice Bould created The Lounge & Co in 2015 to build an environment where the best of hair, service and luxury can meet and you can benefit from a better overall hair experience. Designing all three salons herself, Candice has created a landscape where great hair is non-negotiable, while the well-appointed interiors and design features transforms a routine hair appointment into an enticing experience. Not to mention, the salons combine some of the most talented hairdressers in the business. I was able to sit down with Candice alongside her two Frenchies at her home in Wynnum to tell her story of 27 years in hairdressing and her 3 salons in Newstead, West End and Ormiston. I met Candice through her husband, Scotty, when we worked together at Ray White Bulimba. Scotty does plenty of the work behind the scenes in the business in fixing computer systems, marketing and even chat bots to help the business run more smoothly. Like the partner of any small business owner will attest, it's a team effort, and I can guarantee you that this is a formidable team. But enough about Scotty, this is Candice's story so I'll let her do the talking.

33 - Paul from Beers With Mates - Living an Adventurous Life & Rebuilding After Breakup
As the host of Beers With Mates, I get to meet a wide range of lovely, exciting, interesting people. I was fortunate to sit down with Paul this week to walk through all the ups and downs of his adventurous story over the last 60+ years. We covered a helluva lot of ground, as below: Growing up in Sydney; His overseas travel adventures in his 20s; A career of leading high performing sales teams; Fathering 3 beautiful children then going through a divorce in his 60s; Managing mental health issues within the family; Fostering new friendships and relationships after divorce; and Rebuilding his life and considering career changes in his 60 when many other people are considering slowing down for retirement. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed recording it.

32. Becoming a More Loving Person with Bernie Kelly
Bernie Kelly is one of the fantastic people I've been able to meet through Beers With Mates. He's had a really interesting life as a coach, facilitator and father and we speak about a mix of these on the podcast. He leads people on treks all over the world, including Everest Base Camp, runs his own podcast called A Journey With Bernie, works with businesses and individuals as a coach and is also in the process of writing a book. There's lots to learn on this episode, especially about relationships and rebuilding after divorce. I hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast almost as much as I enjoyed recording it.

22 - South East Queensland Property Update with Mark Wist from Property Resolutions
Mark Wist brings 30 years of real estate advisory experience to the table in this conversation and he usually works to develop investment strategy for large property funds as well as a range of different advisory offerings, including feasibility studies, in both commercial and residential property. He's worked all over the world in property and has lived in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne but today we cover off on Brisbane and South East Queensland where we both live and work. We spoke about a range of different topics, as below: What's happening in the Brisbane Property Market? Growth over the last few years since Covid-19 The impacts of inflation and interest rates on property prices The growth of the unit market Growth on the outskirts of Brisbane and in regional areas The relevance of cities The impact of the Olympics Interstate migration The possibility of Brisbane catching up to Sydney and Melbourne The possibility of the Gold Coast catching up with Brisbane Construction and property development in the current market The value of existing properties versus new stock coming online Expectations for the future Hopefully the conversation answers a few of your questions and if you're looking for more of this content, let me know and I can send you some of our reports from Ray White with both local and national perspectives.

21 - Navigating Career Changes with Laura Heilbronn
Somewhere along the way, you're likely to realise you're in the wrong career. How do you handle that? Laura Heilbronn and I discuss how it all played out for her and how she now helps people manage that transition through her coaching services. We discuss her move out of her role in Human Resources and Marketing in Argentina, her move from Buenos Aires to Northern New South Wales in Australia, her trial and error process of finding the right career then shifting into full-time coaching where she helps people find their passion and purpose. For Laura, she had developed a successful career in HR & Marketing in Buenos Aires but she got to a point where she was wanting more. She did some travel which helped for a while but, when she came back, everything was the same. Eventually, she moved to Australia where she tried a range of different careers and eventually found coaching where she now helps people manage similar transitions, along with bringing all her previous skillsets to the table. Laura and I both believe that you're allowed to keep changing and trying new things until you find the work that lights you up. If you're in the position of just not quite being satisfied by the work you do, this conversation will hopefully give you a bit of head start on moving in the right direction.

20 - Colin Campbell from Keller Williams Realty - Building Empires through Real Estate
I was lucky enough to meet Colin Campbell while I was in an NLP training program called Bold while we both worked at Keller Williams in Toronto, Canada. Colin showed up as the hardest worker in the room every single day and the hard work has paid off over time with some amazing results that we dive into in this podcast. After 8 years in real estate and a fairly slow start, Colin bought the brokerage where he works in the last 12 months and he's now responsible for 240 hard working agents. In this conversation, Colin tells the warts and all story of what he went through, alongside his family, before he could fully develop the work ethic and commitment that makes him the superstar he is today. He also points out some of the habits he's formed to continue developing his skills, his knowledge and his growth mindset. In his introduction, Colin describes himself as a father and a husband who just happens to trade in real estate. In all of that, what stands out to me is that Colin is a leader who is clinical in his study of success and he's massively determined to reach his many goals and leave a legacy in the process. It's clear to me that Colin is someone to watch and emulate over the next decade as he works with his team to continue building empires for his family and his associates.

19 - The Aether Brewing Story with with Dave, George & Rich
Sit down and enjoy some beers while listening to Dave, George and Rich tell the Aether Brewing Story - between them, they make up the Owner (Dave), Head Brewer (George) and the Sales & Marketing Manager (Rich). Aether Brewing is one of the longstanding Craft Breweries in Brisbane and were originally located in Milton. The business has now relocated to Northgate, the team has changed and the focus is now more heavily focussed on brewing a large volume of delicious beer rather than operating as a venue. You’ll get a chance to hear the full story of Aether Brewing in this podcast including the 20 hour days that started the business; Dave telling the story of the partnership split with Jimmy from Milton Common; George weighs in on his experience working as a brewer at one of the largest breweries in the world, Carlsberg; and we run through the Aether range while discussing the evolution of craft beer both in Australia and abroad. There’s plenty to love here and, if you’ve never tried Aether Beer, check out their range at your local bottle shop and see if you can get your hands on some of their special releases like the Peanut Butter Stout, which we discuss here. If you’re not into beer, check out their very popular Ginger Beerd or their range of Fuzzy Logic seltzers (Passionfruit Pavlova is my pick).

18 - Cheyne & Jarrett from Happy Valley Brewing
Sit down and enjoy a beer while listening to Cheyne and Jarrett tell the story of how Happy Valley Brewing launched their brewery in 2020 in the heart of Stafford, previously known as Happy Valley. Cheyne manages the venue and Jarrett is the brewer, together they own the brewery. The guys have 16 different beers on tap and have now brewed over 100 different brews since inception. We dive into how they got the brand up and running during covid, how they ensure their locals enjoy amazing service and how Jarrett manages to come up with so many different creative brews to keep the patrons happy. Would you believe that IPAs are one of his favourite beer styles and, up til now, Jarrett has never brewed the same IPA twice? Listen out for their delicious Caramilk Stout as well.

15. Jenna Britton - Writing Your Way Through according to your Human Design with Jenna Britton
I was lucky enough to meet Jenna about 8 years ago at Camp Goodlife Project when we were both going through transitional periods in our lives at just before age 30. In this conversation, we dive into all that Jenna's been able to accomplish since that time in her three focus areas of writing, human design and coaching. You can find her work at www.jennabritton.com as well as her Instagram profiles @jennabrittonwrites and @bravenoughtobe. Personally, I was able to really benefit from Jenna explaining my human design profile to me and, being 6/2 profiles at around the same age, we find ourselves in a similar reflective phase at the moment. Through Jenna's reflective writing and her work with human design, she's aiming to set herself up for an extremely productive period in the later part of her life. With her help, I'm happy to also be doing the same.

13. Taking Risks and Tackling Challenges Together
I've been running Beers With Mates for almost four years now but I still don't think I've properly explained what it is or the benefits that can be enjoyed when you do it well. Here's a little story that serves as a great reminder of an experience I enjoyed having a beer with a mate in Canada who remains a close friend to this day who was able to support me in some way. After meeting people each month over the last four years or so, I know there are generally a couple of experiences that attendees have been through that to make them go looking for events like this. Being able to meet people with those shared experiences allows you to connect quickly and easily with people, both men and women, and it's been awesome to be able to develop some fantastic friendships over time as a result.

By the time he took the next step to manage the region, he set himself another massive goal and went on to become the top regional director in Canada in his first year in the role - something that's never happened before or since. In this podcast, we dive into Ermos' story and find out what it takes to rise to the top of your game in sales, management and life.

12. Excitable - Thriving With Bipolar
I’ve been running Beers With Mates for three years now and when we went through the process of creating the logo and slogan, a few mates and I put our heads together and came up with Solid Chat: Stronger Contact. Now, what this means for me is that, as you start to open up to your mates about what’s really happening in your life, they’re given the opportunity to step up as mates to support you. At the same time, once you open up, it opens the door for them to do the same and you’re able to now become more honest with one another which forges a much stronger friendship. I’ve been pretty open about my struggles with depression and I’ve shared that story previously but, if I’m really honest, that’s not my key struggle when it comes to mental health and some of my close mates will know that. Today, I’d like to walk you through the full story of what’s been happening with me because: 1, I’m lucky to now be in a secure job where my boss knows the story and is open with me sharing it; and 2. In learning to better manage my mental health, it was these stories from people with shared experience that really helped me, so I hope to be able to do the same.

I hope you enjoy this chat while watching the scenery roll by on a Citycat in the heart of Brisbane. 07 - Brandon Newby - Finding Your Way in the Right Career
Life is a gradual process of becoming yourself. It sounds easy. Our surroundings often make it hard. Brandon has had a few careers so far, much like myself and many others. He's had a few realisations along the way and some negative workplaces have stopped him from fully growing into those realisations and becoming himself. He likes cars. He worked in car sales for a while. He's great with people but when he didn't feel like he was adding value in the sales process he became uncomfortable. As a customer, that's exactly what you want in a service professional but it can be hard to live like that as a salesperson when, at the end of the day, your commissions put food on the table and sometimes you just need to push to get deals done. He didn't enjoy it. I can understand why. I also felt this way at times in commission-only sales. 3 weeks after he left the sales role he was in a better headspace and felt he was ready to come out to his best mate as gay. Fortunately, it was all good and they remain best mates. Had he not been accepted, it would have been another story. We also discussed modern dating, dating apps, gay stereotypes, learning from TV shows and just how difficult it can be to find someone in a world addicted to image. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Brandon Newby.
