Australian Hunting Backcountry
by Tobias Turner
As the name suggests, the podcast is focusing on backcountry hunting, not only in Australia and New Zealand, but anywhere else overseas where great adventures exist. I want to bring a podcast that explores gear, places and hunting opportunities, lived experiences, different perspectives and share the passion that people have for hard earned hunts. I will also bring Australian and small businesses to the front, so listeners are exposed to some of the smaller or niche providers out there that support hunters and give hunters the chance to hear about things that they might want but didn’t know to look for. We will examine gear and hear why hunters want/need some products and might not need others, conduct comparisons between products and locations and discuss the work/life/hunting balance of hunters. The podcast will be educational and entertaining for hunters ranging from those who have no backpack hunting experience to those that consider themselves experts (as we can all learn somet

Ever dreamed of hunting in Alaska...me too. Special Ep. - UNITED WE STAND
This podcast brings together a coalition of independent podcast hosts from across Australia to engage in a measured, evidence-based discussion on the proposed changes to legal firearms ownership laws in Australian states. We begin by acknowledging the horrific atrocities that have prompted renewed public debate. We extend our sincerest condolences to all victims, families, and communities affected. Their loss is profound, and it deserves both respect and seriousness in how policy responses are considered.Across a large portion of the Australian public, there is clear agreement on one central point: law-abiding firearms owners are not responsible for acts of terrorism or violent extremism. The hosts united in this discussion contend that altering existing firearms laws would not have prevented the actions of determined terrorist extremists, who by definition operate outside legal and regulatory frameworks.Within this podcast, these issues—and many others—are examined in depth. Together, the hosts seek to present a unified message of solidarity, advocating for rational policy, accountability, and integrity in public discourse. This is a refusal to accept scapegoating in place of confronting genuine governmental and procedural failings, and a call for solutions that are grounded in facts rather than fear. This is not a culture war monologue; it’s a plan built on unity and calm persistence. We ask listeners to act locally, communicate clearly, and check on their mates. If you care about hunting, target shooting, conservation, or simply fair process, this conversation gives you the words and the steps to make a difference right now.If this resonated, share it with a mate, sign the petitions, and send your email today. Subscribe for follow‑ups and wins, and leave a review so more Aussies can find this conversation. Thanks for all your support in 2025 - Tobias.

Ep. 37 The Venison Diplomat and his children's book
It didn't take me long to realise after I started chatting to Rob that we would be able to talk for ages. What started out as an invite to chat about the children's book he's written "I am a Deer Hunter" turned into touching on just about everything else. A passionate and, self-described, late onset hunter, Rob and I go down a few rabbit holes but eventually get around to chatting about the book.Having read it myself, this is something I wish I'd had when my kids were little. The book (and future releases) are available through the website; thevenisondiplomat.com.au or via Amazon. Copies are also popping up in some gun shops and other places. Please also don't forget to support Brad from 'Boars for a Cause' who is doing an amazing thing trying to fund raise for those less fortunate coming into the Christmas time of year. Ep. 35 Packraft Australia and Walk n Stalk bar
After my hunt last year where I integrated a packraft to help us access some public land, I was inundated with enquiries and questions. Well, I've finally been able to get Ryan from Packraft Australia on the show to share everything he helped me with and more. If you're at all curious about using a packraft then tune in and feel free to contact Ryan afterwards to chat [email protected] also chat with Kurt from Walk-n-Stalk about his intuitively designed 'sticks' that help hunters with everything from hiking, shooting, glassing, filming, butchering, checking for crocs and so much more.Get one for yourself here; walknstalkstore.com and check them out on socials @walknstalk_liftyourgameDon't forget that in 2025 I am proud to be supported by two great partners;Natures Perks -naturesperks.com.au@natures_perks_ausGun Traders Australia -guntraders.com.au@guntradersaustraliaPlease also continue to support the 2024 partners;Skeleton Optics AustraliaOn Track MealsFeel free to reach out for a chat or with any podcast ideas;@australian_hunting_backcountryaustralian.hunting.backcountry@outlook.com.auRemember to look after yourself and your mates - Tobias.

Ep. 34 Sika deer hunting in NZ & Voortrekka
In this episode I sit down with Jason (@liquidantler) and we catch up so I can hear about hunting Sika in NZ. Jason is kind of obsessed about them and was lucky enough to get two hunts in this year - one of which he won through 'The Hunting Club'. Anyone interested in trying their luck at a Sika should listen in to the tips provided by someone who has hunted them for a while. After chatting with him I'm hoping this is something I can make happen in 2026.I also chat with Steve from Voortrekka Australia who rose up to meet a challenge of creating a better travel bag for his gear. Calling it a travel bag seems an oversimplification because it's an intuitive design that was made to make packing easy, gear accessible, and organisation effortless.Jump on here to get hold of one for yourself voortrekka.com.au or check them out on socials @voortrekka.australiaDon't forget that in 2025 I am proud to be supported by two great partners;Natures Perks -naturesperks.com.au@natures_perks_ausGun Traders Australia -guntraders.com.au@guntradersaustraliaPlease also continue to support the 2024 partners;Skeleton Optics AustraliaOn Track MealsFeel free to reach out for a chat or with any podcast ideas;@australian_hunting_backcountryaustralian.hunting.backcountry@outlook.com.auRemember to look after yourself and your mates - Tobias.

Kate had her camping toilet stolen and then decided to get revenge on those that took it...not really but she did have a loo knocked off and couldn't help but wonder why.Kate from @alittle.wander got the opportunity to hunt part of NZ's backcountry with a group of other superwomen to learn, share, experience, bond and laugh. Ep. 30 Backpack buff hunting & Hooked Up app
Firstly, who would be crazy enough to hunt buffalo with an archery set up but secondly, who would do it at the most humid time of the year. Let me introduce you to Josh from Hooked On Life.Josh recounts the adventure two of them went on to try and bow hunt a buffalo bull in the Northern Territory and their struggles. Go view this video and many others on his YouTube and Instagram; @hookedonlife__Josh is also bringing to life a brilliant idea to help hunters and fishers come together more and share resources. The app is "Hooked Up" and could be truly a gamechanger for those looking to increase opportunities and meet likeminded people. In this episode I connect with Fergus Bailey @rifletuner a competitive long range shooter and hunter, and we talk around what he feels is actually needed for reloading and load testing at a competitive level in 'long range' distances and the transition of that to hunting.I did have some minor technical issues to overcome in this episode so bear with me on the audio...I will invite Fergus back for another one or two recordings (if he'll have me) so feel free to shoot questions through after listening to this one.I also chat with Lawson from @natures_perks_aus around what these guys are now doing and they evolved from their previous endeavours into Natures Perks. Ep. 22 Weekend Mish & Alpine Beards
In May 2024 I was able to spend an incredible 3 weeks hunting in New Zealand and in between hunts, I was very fortunate to be able to meet up with the two young lads from @theweekendmish. Raz and Gabe are absolutely knocking it out of the park with their hunting and success in this world. We had a really fun chat and I would loved to have stayed longer but their schedule was tight so I slipped in for as long as I could and then moved on to my next hunting location. I'm really looking forward to seeing what these young men are up to next. They have some amazing videos on YouTube so be sure to check them all out (if you haven't already). My 'friend of the podcast' in this episode is Shaun from Alpine Beards (@alpine_beards_australia). Ep. 21 NZ 2024 - Hunt 1 recordings along the hunt
In May 2024 I was able to spend nearly 3 weeks in New Zealand chasing Tahr and Chamois on my own. This is from my first hunt which was up the Copland River on the west coast. The recordings are done in the field and after the hunt so the audio is reflective of my surroundings. Spoiler alert - I didn't get any animals on the ground but I did see a couple of beautiful Tahr bulls. I wanted to be able to pass on my learnings along the way to help you get over to NZ for a backcountry hunt as this was an absolutely amazing experience. Feel free to ask me any questions you want. Ep. 20 "What role should monolithic projectiles have in hunting?"
With the potential ban on lead core projectiles being a hot topic at the moment, I speak with Nathan & Steph Morris from 'Terminal Ballistics Research' and pick his bran stemming from their extensive research. Ep. 19 Mental Hunts; RMK Leatherworks
Mental health and firearm ownership is a complex topic to navigate and on this episode I chat with Glen who went through a mental health issue and lost his access to firearms. As a result, Glen made it a personal mission to change how the government treated people in this situation. I'm thankful for people like Glen and his team from Mental Hunts for bringing the focus on this topic in such a measured approach. While they are based in NZ it's still inspiring to hear what they are achieving in changing the mindset of those put in charge to police our weapon ownership. It gives hope that change can be effected in Australia so firearm owners are not faced with similar issues. @mentalhunts or find them on YouTube. On the 'Friend of the Podcast' segment I travel up the road to the Sunshine Coast and meet up with Matt from RMK Leatherworks. Matt has a hunting background and he and his team make some damn fine leather products - some for shooting/hunting and many other needs outside of this. @rmkleatherworks https://rmkleatherworks.com I would also ask you to support the 2024 podcast partners; Skeleton Optics - @skeletonoptics_au www.skeletonoptics.com.au On Track Meals - @on_track_meals www.ontrackmeals.com Anyone with ideas for future episodes, or just a chat around backcountry/backpack hunting - please feel free to reach out. @australian_hunting_backcountry [email protected] Thanks for listening - look after yourselves and your mates.

The topic for this episode is backcountry communication and safety. I talk with Reiny from the Satphone Shop about all things to do with remote communication devices and options. The Satphone shop in Mulgrave, Victoria has a great range of products and supports our hunting community so reach out to them if you're needing something or want to upgrade. @satphoneshop https://satphoneshop.com This episode is released in June which is Men's Mental Health month and instead of a 'Friend of the Podcast' segment I want to check in with you all. Ep. 17 Dall sheep hunt with Cait and Tonia; Aussie Skull Mounts
A Dall's sheep is a dream pinnacle hunt for many hunters. Well, Cait and Tonia from Alaska made it happen. Ep. 10 - Chris Boon; OG backpack hunter
Chris Boon has been backpack hunting for many years and details his learnings, experiences and some personal challenges that he overcame to get back into the Vic high country in 2023. For those of you old enough to remember having to read hunting magazines to get your content fix, Chris wrote a number of articles and is probably best remembered for hunts with his infant son in his backpack. Chris has successfully hunted all 6 species of deer in Australia but, like alot of us, is addicted to Sambar. I felt honoured to be able to chat with Chris and actually meet someone I held in such high regard from reading his articles all those years ago. Make sure to check out highlights from his trip @chrisboon2014. I'm also joined in my Friend of the Podcast segment by Josh from Alpine Accuracy to discuss his lightweight shooting bags. Chris Burns @chrisburns.photography is an avid hunter and professional photographer/videographer and we discuss the crossover of the two for Chris. We cover some of the issues around capturing content while hunting, camera gear, tips and tricks and gear for backcountry hunts. If you have thought about having a hunt documented professionally rather then just iPhone selfies, then Chris (and his awesome moustache) may just be the man for the job. https://www.chrisburns.photography/ Chris also runs Bushveld Hunting Adventure South Africa @bushveldhuntingadventures if you're interested in hunting the dark continent. https://www.bushveldhuntingadventures.com/ AND, don't forget that Chris and his wife, Daniella, run Skeleton Optics Australia. Ep. 6 - TRICER lightweight backcountry products with Drew
In this episode I connect with Drew from TRICER @tricerusa all the way over in California, USA. Tricer's statement is; "To help hunters go deeper into the backcountry, we manufacture products that are fast, light, and simple." Drew is the owner of Tricer (and an awesome moustache) and designs a number of lightweight products for the backcountry hunter including their most recent additions, a super-light fluid tripod head and carbon fiber tripods. I have personally been using the TRICER-LP for several months and Drew assures me that there are some more mind-blowing products on the way. Tricer is firmly identifying themselves as a hunting company and cementing themselves as leaders in this field - https://tricerusa.com/ Drew is a family man, small business owner and a gear nerd (like me) so we talk a bit about some of the gear we use and integrating our children into hunting. Drew also has his own podcast 'The Tricer Podcast' so head over there for some great content too. But most importantly!!! Tricer is now supported in Australia by 'The Modern Hunter Australia' so we can support an Australian business at the same time as getting hold of these quality products - https://themodernhunter.com.au/ On my 'Friend of the Podcast' segment I am talking to Geoff from 'Down Under Outdoors'. Geoff and his wife Cath, who have been hunting Sambar deer for decades, identified the need for some simple yet effective products for hunters including silicone scope lens covers and face veils. They also have an insulated waterproof blanket that will provide a multitude of uses for camping/fishing/4WDing. Ep.4 - ON TRACK MEALS - Read to eat adventure meals
On this episode I get to connect with Eric from On Track Meals who highlights a business success story to come out of being an end-user need and business survival through the dirty C word from the last few years. ABOUT THIS SHOW
As the name suggests, the podcast is focusing on backcountry hunting, not only in Australia and New Zealand, but anywhere else overseas where great adventures exist.
