Baked and Awake January 29 2023 Episode 123 SMOKE RESPONSIBLY MY DUDES Intro Welcome back, it's been a while, but we're back together again. Consider this a test to weed out all the fair weather listeners- if you're still here, you passed the trial! There will be cake served at the end of this podcast for all. Now, I've been keeping busy as I'm sure you all have in your own subjectively protagonistic worlds. Everyone in my family and circle as far as I know, is doing pretty well, certainly nothing to report or to complain about. I trust and hope that wherever you are listening to this right now, you are well. Well enough anyway to take a little time to sit for a few moments with me while I tell you a couple of stories That I found interesting. Maybe join me for a puff, maybe don't. Is it one, or more?  Nevermind but that might be foreshadowing…    First up today I want to more or less introduce a topic that I really was only ever dimly aware of- a technology semi lost to history, but from the not very distant past as I see it.  That technology is something out of a steampunk novel or fantasy film, or so I kind of thought, until I stumbled on a video where else but on YouTube (love it or hate it YT has the most content anywhere- don't @ me). The subject I'm talking about is called Transport Gasifier technology. In short, cars, trucks, trains and boats/ships running on biomass fuels.  Wood Powered vehicles. Baked and Awake Podcast 121 October 14 2021   Algorithms, Bots, Corporate, Internet, Social Media, Content Drift, Link Rot, Internet Rot, Potemkin Village , Google Search results, Deepfakes, Misinformation, FB Whistleblower, The Dunbar Number, Social Engineering Theory, COINTELPRO, Forum Sliding, Gaslight culture, Straw Men, Memetic weaponization, Devils' Advocate, Verifying the identity of someone on the internet is hard! Voice actors   In politics and economics, a Potemkin village is any construction (literal or figurative) whose sole purpose is to provide an external façade to a country that is faring poorly, making people believe that the country is faring better. The term comes from stories of a fake portable village built by Grigory Potemkin, former lover of Empress Catherine II, solely to impress the Empress during her journey to Crimea in 1787. While modern historians agree that accounts of this portable village are exaggerated, the original story was that Potemkin erected phony portable settlements along the banks of the Dnieper River in order to impress the Russian Empress; the structures would be disassembled after she passed, and re-assembled farther along her route to be viewed again as if another example.   Dead Internet Theory- what is it and why do we care?  Hello, welcome back once again to the Baked and Awake Podcast. I know it's been a few weeks since I read you all the story of The Smoky God, which if you missed it came back in September in two parts- but we are back together at the desk today to talk about a number of more contemporary matters, some of which I'm openly asking for your assistance with as regards fully understanding the matters described in the contents of one particular website I found recently while researching the initial topic, The Dead Internet Theory. Sounds awesome, doesn't it?  Dystopian even.  I'm sure there's an episode of Black Mirror about this out there somewhere, you know I never finished that particular anthology probably because it was all too believable to me, maybe. So, to explain a bit- the Dead Internet Theory seems to have come into existence just over the past year now online in forums like 4chan, reddit, and one much lesser known and truly unique community that I learned of called Agora Road, where threads discussing the extent of the theory have been written and heavily commented upon. Personally, I think I came across this on YouTube, where just a few but quite decent short pieces have been made on the topic, and I'll leave links to them below- and those videos sent me off a researching, including to a referenced recent journalistic piece written on The Dead Internet that was printed in The Atlantic back in August. I'll also be linking to the full article, but please be advised I believe The Atlantic only lets you read one or two articles per month without subscribing to the mag, so if you've just been bouncing off their website daily lately reading all their content like some kind of High falootin news addict, well you might just bump up against their paywall.  In that case I guess listen to me for a few more minutes then go find those videos in the description or show notes.  Long time listeners of the podcast will probably be well on their way already in terms of deducing what this is all about.  This theory is right in line with topics we have been talking about for years now here on the podcast, right?  Deepfakes, Artificial Intelligence, Pervasive Mass Surveillance and Social Engineering- Cybernetics, Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars. Those are all homework assignments for new listeners by the way.  Pretty much every phrase I just uttered there is a past show topic on one or more occasions, so feel free to dive into those archives because that's what they're there for, and every show I've ever produced includes a detailed show notes section with the resources I used to come up with the episode you're listening to.    And now, let's have a look at the think piece from The Atlantic to get a clear picture of what this dreadfully believable theory is all about. The piece was I think very well written by its creator, Kaitlyn Tiffany, so let's, shall we?    Former Colleague of mine from LinkedIn: Last summer googles results after the 5 or 6 item totally turned to garbage link bait, ripped and sliced diced sentence fragments that had logical meaning to the index but only negative net value. Especally frustrating if it was a technical paper that had citations, references to it were always to some sort of site that was craled and had its ip address in the results. Its gotten better, but it was a dark hole there for a while.   DEADGPK YT: I have only heard of it a few weeks ago as a full theory. Before there have been many things about AI being able to create things such as music, art and I believe there's an AI that even runs a YouTube channel. I have also looked into the digital influencers that have become popular or the years and they started around 2017 if i remember. While it's an interesting theory and definitely worth discussions, I'm not totally convinced it to the point of total AI take over. But it seems that it is definitely headed in that direction. Much of the interaction on social media seems manufactured to the point where you will see several accounts post the same exact thing. Bots are definitely used these days and it for the spread of misinformation imo.    Anecdotal from Nicole: Yesterday Nicole told me that she saw a post (likely on IG) that said something about "Conservatives are now waiting for Progressive accounts on Twitter to promulgate tweets that they know to be false out on the platform, and only when they know the meme has gained sufficient traction to maybe get to trending, they mass report the posts therefore often causing many people to be either suspended or banned from the platform. Listeners of the podcast who have been with me any length of time will be to some degree aware of my reasons behind doing this podcast and some of the different sources of inspiration that I drew upon when coming up with the concept of Baked and Awake.  However, at a moment like this I find myself reflecting upon such matters, especially as I prepare to bring you today's episode.  I'm streaming live on youtube today, and bringing you all a very special guest, a bona fide celebrity, and in my opinion a man whose contributions to society will continue to be viewed as only growing in stature the longer he lives and continues to bring his unique comedy and social commentary to the world.  Indeed, I'm just as confident that in the years and decades to come in the future, by his work and people's memories- that the legacy of Tommy Chong and his life long artistic expression as one half of the legendary comedy duo Cheech and Chong- will be one that will stand tall and proud for devotees of the plant everywhere.   I say without hyperbole that Cheech and Chong's "Loveable Stoner" characters were and remain crucially important Archetypes in breaking down and putting to rest the antiquated notions of Cannabis Users being dangerous, unhinged psychopaths in the making. During the early 1970's as Cheech and Chong released their first comedy albums to a public who probably didn't suspect what they were about to hear- America and The World largely still regarded Pot Smokers in such dangerous terms as I have described.  The manic characterization put forth in 1936's Reefer Madness had taken a firm hold in the imaginations of members of Straight Laced Society, and had by then been relentlessly drilled into the psyche's of every young person growing up during the Post War baby boom era.  By lampooning themselves more honestly and rigorously than even their most ardent detractors, the Duo of Cheech and Chong in some ways snuck up on the world and made people love them despite their obvious passion for what many of them still thought of as "the Devil's Lettuce".   As Cheech and Chong slowly became first household names, later verbs ("Let's go Cheech and Chong out back, man"), and finally- adjectives ("Are you Cheeched, or what?"), everyone who had ever been exposed to their comedy had been infected, in a way like a virus- but perhaps more accurately like a meme.  They did this in what, looking back at it now, it still looks like it was a vacuum. Name a more iconic weed culture duo from the 70's, 80's, or 90's- I'll wait.  Cheech and Chong released their first album in 1971.  I wasn't born until 1974, so by the time I was old enough to understand WHO Cheech and Chong were, they were already so far past their initial rise in popularity that even as small kids who certainly had never even seen someone smoke anything other than a White Owl cigar- we nevertheless DID who Cheech and Chong were. As my generation grew up and eventually started to experiment with social drinking and finally smoking- we would, as if of one mind- perform credible sounding impressions of Chong's Shaggy esque drawl, as well as Cheech marin's Chicano bravado, quoting but much more often misquoting bits from their iconic movies as we would engage in the rituals of preparing to smoke, the act itself, and during the enjoyment of its effects.  At after work gatherings someone loudly calls through a closed apartment door the stoner mating call of "Dave's not here,man!", to any knocks, or jumping in the car after a session, and before taking off out of the spot turning to their driving partner and giving them the old "Hey man, am I driving okay?  To which a loyal friend could be relied upon to quickly rejoin "I think we're parked, man".  Some members of the audience can be forgiven for thinking that line came from the latter day cult classic, Super Troopers- but I think it's fair to say we know where the hilarious and creative people at Broken Lizard drew that little moment of inspiration from.  Similarly, I will say that every comedian, musician, youtuber, or podcaster who has walked in Cheech and Chong's footsteps over the past forty some years owes them a deep and direct debt of gratitude for forging a path that others have been making their careers on ever since.  Tommy Chong has seen a lot in his time on earth and in the public eye, including the inside of a federal prison, where he spent 9 months serving a sentence for supposedly illegally shipping poisonous, spike covered, weapons grade bongs. This is something that I kid about, but only because we must laugh at some things, because not to laugh is to perhaps cry at the absurdity of a so called Justice System that makes such a thing even possible.  Tommy himself will tell you not to pity him, that his time under incarceration was one of reflection and personal growth.  He might also tell you that he met a few people inside that were serving much longer sentences than himself, and for far less damnable offenses.   You've been subjected to this long introduction today because as i prepared for this show over the past couple of weeks, I realized that in a very real way, I owed a lot of my personal sense of pride at being a cannabis user and indeed my inspiration to stake my claim in the podcasting space as a cannabis associated personality and brand- that this came from Cheech and Chong teaching the whole damned closed minded world- that stoners are people, too.  Personally, I can't wait any longer to meet this man, and to hear more from him about the adventure that surely must be, being Tommy Chong.

Spooky Szn Special (Episode 110) October 31st 2020 Roanoke Island's Lost Colony   Today on Baked and Awake My First Conspiracy- The Lost English Colony of Roanoke Island. This is both a Ghost Story, therefore fitting for a show released on Halloween, and to my mind a compelling example of competing versions of history that can be found not only here, but in so many stories we have preserved and related as "facts" throughout human history. I'm about to share with you a whole bunch of very well documented details that I nevertheless doubt you've heard anywhere else. As I am indicating, this is a story many, if not most of you think you already know.  I hope today to at least tell those of you in that camp a little bit more than you knew before, maybe a lot more- and for those fortunate enough to be learning about the Lost Colony for the first time today, I welcome you most warmly of all, and I promise to treat this opportunity of telling you this tale as the honor that in many ways it is. Now, to do this Roanoke story any justice whatsoever, we are gonna have to use my personal Temporal Panopticon, otherwise known as a 2018 Mac Mini with two thrift store displays and a just decent broadband internet connection. We will use this magic mirror in order to peer into the mists of time. And since this time machine is so powerful, we have the opportunity to not only travel back to 1587, the year of the founding of the famed Lost Colony, but indeed to two years earlier, when the first colony at Roanoke was founded, only to be abandoned in only about 9 months. But really, why would we stop there?  Because even in 1585 there were more colonies and "expeditions" also known as "raiding parties" than I can easily count, so much so that we will come back to this point in a few minutes after we ever so briefly take a moment to remember, and to a small extent name, the existing inhabitants of the lands in question, which were at the time of this particular moment in history, already engaging in persistent, decades long campaigns of trading, raiding, and enslaving the indigenous people of North America for the enrichment of themselves and their European Patrons, and with an eye to completely acquiring said lands while subduing the People of those lands. This destiny and mission was laid out from just about Day One, as far as I can tell. Baked and Awake Episode 109 September 21 2020 The Prepping Issue Terms: Prepping, Survivalism, Bushcraft, Herbalist, Homesteading, Lost Ways of Living Types of Preppers:   CDC and FEMA Emergency Prep Types aka "Straights", Self Professed Practical Preppers- generally normal types who for some reason have the preparedness mindset.  Some of these people might come from families with strong ancestral memories of times like The Great Depression or other adversity, and generally do not present as being "Preppers" but more of a pragmatic, well stocked household.  Full On Preppers- These are your Red Greens and Dale Gribbles of the world.  This type of prepper is a little more upfront about their lifestyle, and may selectively share tips or theories with neighbors they trust, as they seek to feel out who their SHTF community members will be.  Red and Dale still live in the normal suburban neighborhood.  They mow their lawns, and they have a portable generator, maybe even a tent trailer or some other modest but always at the ready Bug Out vehicle parked in the driveway. July 29th 2020   Intro:  Greetings- We smoke weed on this podcast.  If you don't smoke weed, or are out of weed, press stop now and go fix your problems before coming back here to listen.     Personal updates: The Family Corona Garden is booming, we have harvested over 40lbs of onions and over 50lbs of potatoes already, as well as dozens of zucchini, and a few early cucumbers, radishes, carrots and artichokes.  Next up for the garden will be the Tomato explosion, as we have many (many!) tomato plants this season. We are also currently resetting the newly opened up potato bed for a fall/winter planting of garlic and some brassicas (cabbage-kale family) that will overwinter and be harvested in the spring.  For those of you following along and gardening yourselves- although it seems late in the year, and you're probably thinking anything you put in the ground now might get torched by the harsh sun of peak summer- if you can keep your babies covered up with some shade cloth or netting of some kind, and moisten that soil, you can set yourself up even now for both that winter crop, and a few fast growing fall crops that you can be enjoying up through october and november, even in more temperate climates like the Pacific Northwest.  Some of the best of these late season fast growers include spinach, lettuces, swiss chard, broccoli, and radishes. With a strong focus on the mysteries of The Old World and the purported to be "Lost" Civilization of Grand Tartaria, he spends a lot of time on questions I often grapple with in my research for the podcast. Andreas' videos shine through his analysis of things like Popular Culture, particularly visual media like TV, Film, and animation in particular- through a lens of Tartarian Discernment, and frequently have me and many members of his audience scratching our heads and wondering where this affinity for finding and elucidating coded information comes from in a man so relatively young. Recently Andreas re-uploaded an older video of his to a backup youtube channel, and as the notification came through I decided it was a good time to go back and watch this material again, as a review.  The video was titled 001 History Revised Xirtus Tartaria Documentary, and I recalled it to have been a nice overview of most of the salient points that constitute the Tartarian Civilization Puzzle. As I sat there enjoying the material all over again, I quickly realized that I wanted to use this video and it's story as the basis for a conversation with Andreas, where I could ask him to expand on a few of the things in the video itself.  What follows will be a recording of this conversation. Either one would be almost my first time ever being exposed to these types of hash, but is the Temple Ball worth the extra money? What even IS a "Temple Ball?" We'll find out.  I have been inspired by the content of one Frenchy Cannoli for a while now and if you haven't already heard of him he's a man known for traveling and teaching the history and methods of making traditional cannabis hashish. Check out Todd's IG where he's active, and posts some great stuff that you're sure to find edifying. Todd's salient points in this recent talk about Indica and Sativa and how badly they're being relied upon to describe the entire world of cannabis centered on Carl Linnaeus, American Vets encountering what they would come to call "Indica" in India and Afghanistan, etc, and the major changes that brought to existing cultivars already in play in North America at the time as they brought these strains home to breed with the existing longer flowering tropical landrace strains that though popular, struggled to thrive outdoors here. We use Indica and Sativa as labels that are supposed to map to an expected type of high. The problem of course is that there are a number of important factors that actually contribute to what the flower you're smoking, and the concentrates made from it, are going to deliver in terms of experience.  These range from inputs like what nutrition especially sugars was the plant fed during its life, how early or late the plant was harvested, and importantly, how effectively and gently was the plant dried and "cured" before being consumed. Finally, time on the shelf after the cure is complete will continue to affect the taste and effects of the flower, with the intensity of the high deteriorating over time but not before becoming increasingly tranquilizing in it's presentation, even as overall potency slowly declines. I have a question regarding the proposed House Bill 2546 concerning limitations on potency of legal Cannabis Concentrates. At the top of the pdf of 2546 there is a statement concerning a 2019 study of psychosis patients' that showed a correlation between that mental illness and high potency cannabis concentrates. (Statement included in-line for clarity)     "The legislature finds that health professionals and researchers continue to find an association between the use of high potency marijuana and the occurrence of psychotic disorders. A 2019 study analyzed data from patients with first-episode psychosis and found that, compared with participants who reported never having used cannabis, "participants who used high-potency cannabis daily had four-times higher odds of psychosis in the whole sample, with a five times increase in London and a nine-times increase in Amsterdam." The study defined high-potency cannabis as a potency greater than ten percent. Further, the study found that its findings are consistent with previous evidence suggesting that the use of high-potency marijuana has more harmful mental health effects than use of less potent marijuana."   My question is can I please be referred to a link where the cited study can be read, or if your office is in possession of digital copies can you provide this for me? January 8th 2020 Baked and Awake  Episode 096   Don't worry, I never heard of Parallel Reality before, either   Source:  Fast Company, via Slashdot   Original Article by Harry McCracken (https://www.fastcompany.com/90443495/deltas-parallel-reality-airport-display-sounds-like-sci-fi-but-its-real Misapplied Sciences: https://www.misappliedsciences.com/ Delta Airlines bought ($8million in a Series A) into a Redmond WA Based startup not at all ominously named Misapplied Sciences (MSFT Alums). Misapplied was operating in "Stealth Mode" (since 2014!) while building a new tech that Delta now intends to deploy ubiquitously throughout airports all over the world (presumably) that would create a new experience for its customers whereby the signage the traveler sees will be entirely personalized to each individual. From the story: "It's almost limitless, the product map," says COO Gil West. "Curb to gate, for things like wayfinding, boarding, upgrades, service recovery if your flight is delayed or canceled." The tech accomplishes this seemingly miraculous feat by hyper focusing pixels on a special display, which depending on the viewers position will only beam specific images, colors, text (anything) to each individual user. Oh yeah, and AI and a bunch of video cameras mounted all over the place where the system is deployed. I choose that word for a reason.    The screens, still early versions of the tech- currently have some limitations on the number of different subjects they can display unique information for, but even these limits are staggering:  one iteration of the parallel reality screen can display unique information to 18,000 different points in front of it, while another is claimed to be able to split it's display A MILLION times. I'm imagining billboards on roadways and window signs of businesses that deliver customized targeted ads.  I'm also envisioning dystopian "Public Service" displays that beam reminders and warnings to people who have forgotten to pay a parking fine, or might be in the midst of considering other mundane civil infractions like jaywalking, littering, parking in the load zone, jumping a mass transit turnstyle etc.  The Company's CEO, in a quote for the Fast Company story said that "The system is agnostic to the tracking technology—all we need to know is a three-dimensional location that we want to send a piece of content to." This statement I find concerning when referring to a technology that mostly relies on *many cameras being arrayed and networked together to follow the traveler around the airport so that the system can tell when someone is standing in front of one of the displays, and can then perform it's magic. For the sake of clarity and in order to quell my initial weird feeling about this choice of words, I looked up the definition of agnostic: As applied it is an adjective, although a person can also be labeled "an agnostic" and in that case of course the word is a noun.  Sticking to the adjective however we find, per Google, that: adjective adjective: agnostic- Relating to agnostics or agnosticism. Synonyms: skeptical, doubting, questioning, unsure, cynical, unbelieving, disbelieving, nonbelieving, faithless, irreligious, rationalist, nullifidian. Nevertheless, further clarity may be gained by also reading the noun's definition, which reads: "A person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God or of anything beyond material phenomena; a person who claims neither faith nor disbelief in God"  Speaking of magic, I saw some (weed and paranoia fueled no doubt) red flags in the language chosen by the article's author, over and above Misappllied's CEO's glib take on his responsibility to acknowledge the true scope of their tech's wider applications. The article opens with characterizing the airport traveling experience as a ritual. A couple paragraphs down, a statement about how the tech in question is being judged as "a technological magic trick". There were references to the Startup being in "Stealth Mode", and the choice to use phrases like Deployed and Deployment, which appear three times when referencing additional applications for the tech as well as where Delta is currently planning to test it (Detroit, by the way). To be fair, I assume Mr McCracken is a tech writer by trade,(UPDATE: Oh yeah is he ever) and in that realm, specifically in software development, "Deploy" is frequently used as a label for certain workflows including pushing updates to servers, handing off new builds from developers to Testers, etc.  "We deployed the new build this morning so you clowns should be able to break it as soon as you're ready" that sort of thing, so it could just be force of Techboy habit- but I don't like the word here. Whenever your car's infotainment system receives an OTA update, some Sys Admin somewhere a few hours before got a little IT Boner when they said "We've deployed the latest code to the Live Server", or words to that effect. I don't know, it all smacks of para militarism or something.  The whole project was borne out of a 2014 Microsoft experiment with Spectators at a Pro Sports event where cell phones were used to signal individuals to sit or stand on command, effectively turning them into "Human Pixels" (Ahem- cybernetics- cough).  Misapplied also has a connection to Walt Disney Imagineering, through Co Founder Dave Thompson, who previously worked in creating theme park experiences for Disney. (More pure psychology and cybernetics all with the express intent of getting you to stay longer and spend more in The Enchanted Kingdom) Delta will be showing a Future Visions video at CES that depicts a Parallel Reality powered security check-in experience that appears to be a seamless, hands free operation- something that I think will be leveraged heavily to push for widespread use of such systems in many other public spaces as well as secure buildings (Malls, Stadiums, High Rise Offices, Apartments, etc). The article closes with ...Future possibilities aside, once Delta's beta experience is up and running, it should be worth at least a few minutes for anyone who travels through the airline's Detroit terminal and wants to see something genuinely new. Ng, however, remains insistent that the ultimate goal isn't to wow anybody. Like many a potential breakthrough before it, parallel reality will matter most if we start to take it for granted. "It's not about people appreciating the technology," he says. "It's about people going through these venues and getting a seamless experience. And when we can get to that point, where the technology blends away, that means we made it. That means that we were successful." Now, I must hasten to qualify the assertion that the visions were one hundred percent for sure that of the then General of the Continental Army.- this vision is attributed to George Washington, but was not heard of before the time of it's disclosure in 1859 by a then 99 year old Random Old Soldier named Anthony Sherman. Sherman was supposedly there in '77 for that bitter winter, one in which it was recounted many times that Washington would "Go to the thicket to pray". The Old Soldier would recount his story before he perished, that the listener may record Washington's Vision, which included a sweeping picture of the young nation's future, marked by three terrible perils. But perhaps his most famous general audience book is  "The Sexual Revolution". You may have heard of that last one at least insofar as the titular phrase was indeed a sort of battle cry for the Beatnik and later Hippie Generations who ardently embraced, at least for a time- the "Free Love" lifestyle and culture that ended in the late 1970's with the natural aging of those people coinciding with the terrible and little understood new disease, still unnamed, but suspected to be sexually transmitted that we know today of course as the scourge that is AIDS. My point here is that there have been dozens of books written about Reich, both lauding him and condemning him, documentaries abound all over the internet. This is probably the 500th podcast to cover Wilhelm Reich- heck, I listened to some myself just researching the material I'm talking to you about today! This guy is super interesting, weird, and not a little off putting.
