Is the "Trust Recession" a real thing? Building a Resilient Business in Capitalism

Everyone's talking about a "trust recession" in business right now. AI made everything sound the same. Algorithms made everything look the same. And we're all wondering if anyone is even real anymore. But what if the problem isn't trust at all? What if it's that we've been performing a polished, scripted version of ourselves for so long that real connection has nowhere to land? Meet the Speakers Sarah K. Heeter is the dynamic CEO of Podfox Media, the force behind 5,000+ episodes reaching millions across 120+ countries. Host of the award-nominated Big Brave Business podcast, Sarah electrifies audiences speaking on podcasting strategy, ethical leadership, and inclusive entrepreneurship. Selling Feels Impossible When the World is On Fire

Selling feels hard right now. Siobhan Strode is back on the podcast today and we get into the political dread, the genocide, the right wing creep happening on both sides of the Atlantic, the panic attacks about empty pipelines, and the deep hypocrisy we both feel trying to tell people "come work with me" while also wondering if any of this even matters. We also get into: How capitalism programs us to call time with our families "wasted" The trauma response loop of doom-scrolling and what it does to our nervous systems Toxic following (or "hate following") the big names The "trust recession" and the irony of who's talking about it Siobhan's program This Sister Speaks opening up, and why a small intimate group of women and non-binary folks learning to use their voices is exactly the work we need right now Meet the Speakers Sarah K. How to Build an Ethical Business: Scaling Without Extraction

Becky Mollenkamp is back, and this time as a published author. Liberate Your Business: A Radical Guide for Entrepreneurs Building Inside a Broken System, is exactly what the title promises. No pretending capitalism isn't a problem, no moralizing about a perfect solution that doesn't exist yet. We dig into what it actually looks like to scale without extraction, why "hustle vs. rest" is only the beginning of the conversation, and how reframing the question from "how much can I make?" to "how much is enough?" changes everything, for you AND the people inside your business ecosystem. Grab the book at beckymollenkamp.com/book. And if you can, buy directly from Becky, because publishing keeps a big chunk of every sale otherwise. Connect with Today's Speakers: Sarah K. When to Focus on Audience-Building: Becoming Known an Expert Authority

One thing I've always been adamant about (and will *literally never stop talking about*) is that when you first start a business, your priority should be making money—not building an audience. Building an audience is a long game. It takes time to see significant returns. Meanwhile, rent is due. Big influencer business coaches always give advice about what they would do if they were starting over today, but it's so out of touch to anyone who hasn't been making $100,000+/month! But... eventually... you reach a point where you have no choice but to prioritize audience building in order to grow. Aaand if I'm being really honest? That's where I am in my business. And my guest this week, AnnMarie, feels that way, too! Meet AnnMarie: AnnMarie Rose is an Life-Proof Business Scaling Strategist with nearly a decade of experience helping coaches, consultants and service providers leverage their zone of genius to scale their businesses with clarity, confidence and strategic intention. She and her team have helped hundreds of business owners navigate growth mode with ease by aligning their business model to their vision, refining their offer suite and positioning, streamlining their marketing and sales systems, and dialing in an a-player team so they can elevate their impact and income without overwhelm, chaos or burnout. Mental Health Challenges and Suicidal Ideation Among Founders

When I asked today's guest (my friend Dee Ntšala) what was on her heart to talk about during this episode, she mentioned a really intense, staggering statistic about the mental health challenges that entrepreneurs face. Did you know that founders are more likely to have suicidal ideation? I didn't, so this conversation floored me. 156: Let's Get Honest About Your Business... and Your Ethics

This episode introduces the business audit framework I use in my own work: a two-score system for assessing every single asset in your business. 1) Does it work, and 2) Is it aligned? Not as yes/no questions, but on a sliding scale, through four specific lenses each. Because good and bad, ethical and unethical, working and broken — none of it is actually binary. Some of what I share might open a can of worms for you. That's kind of the point. In this episode: Why "profitable" doesn't mean your offer is actually working The two scores every business asset needs and the four lenses behind each one Why your alignment score being higher than your work score is not a badge of honor What I discovered when I audited my own social media The membership I closed — not because it wasn't making money, but because it wasn't getting results Why operations are where your values either become infrastructure or stay performative What to do when both scores are low (and why it's actually the easiest place to start) The resource mentioned in this episode — the downloadable workbook version of this audit — is linked below: https://bigbravebusiness.com/audit Sarah K. Sales Strategies Based on Human Connection

Sometimes I see a small business owner on Threads post something so evocative and aligned with my core values that I can't help it and I just reach out and invite them on the podcast. That's because with one really high impact post, I can tell that we could have an interesting and big, brave conversation about business. And really, that's the power of leveraging your core values to create human connection online and what my guest today, Fopsy, calls "creating superfans." We are talking all about this on the podcast today--and yes, we met on Threads. The Rise & Fall of DEI and Performative vs. Intentional Decision-Making

In 2020, corporations couldn't post their black squares fast enough. DEI statements flowed like wine. Budgets materialized overnight. Promises were made with the conviction of zealots. And now? Those same companies are scrubbing DEI language from their websites faster than you can say "political backlash." In this week's episode with DEI and Learning & Development leader Noelle Johnson, we confronted this disturbing reality head-on: the rapid dismantling of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts happening across American business. Meet Noelle Johnson Noelle Johnson is a DEI and Learning & Development leader with over a decade of experience helping organizations build truly inclusive workplaces. 154: How to tell the difference between good advice and bad advice

We have access to more business information than ever before — podcasts, YouTube, Google, coaches, social media, ChatGPT, masterminds, business besties... And even though the barrier to entry for entrepreneurs is lower than ever, decision-making now faces an over-analysis problem. In this solo episode, I'm sharing the framework I actually use to cut through the noise and figure out what advice is worth taking — and what to leave behind. Because here's the thing: good advice and bad advice aren't as easy to tell apart as black and white. The real filter is a two-part system, and once you have it, you'll use it on everything. We also get into pricing (because of course we do), AI as a thought partner (with caveats), and why the goal of this podcast was never to hand you a to-do list. In this episode: Why more opinions lead to more paralysis — and what to do instead The two-factor framework for distinguishing good advice from bad advice Why something can "work" mathematically and still be ethically misaligned Why I fundamentally disagree with the "reverse engineer your income goal" approach to pricing How to use AI as a mirror for your own thinking (and when not to) "Take what you want, leave the rest" — and why this applies to this very podcast Why your values are step zero for all of this to actually work Key Takeaways: Quieting the noise is always step one. Seeking more input when you're overwhelmed usually makes things worse. The two criteria for evaluating any advice: Does it work? Is it ethically aligned with your core values? This creates a four-part matrix: doesn't work + not aligned (bad), works but not aligned (still bad), aligned but doesn't work (also bad), and works AND aligned (the only real good advice). But here's what actually happened: 66% converted to ongoing clients, participants showed up live all week, I felt more alive in my work than I had all year, and I knew immediately I'd run it again. This episode pulls back the curtain on what success actually looks like when you're not measuring it purely by revenue. I'm sharing real numbers, real struggles with 2025's political chaos draining my business energy, and how an "unsuccessful" launch taught me more about my zone of genius than any six-figure win ever could. In this episode: Why I went MIA (and why your podcast can survive it) The real numbers behind Podcast Launch Prep Week Round 1 How I measure success beyond signup numbers What surprised me most about delivering the program The December timing mistake I won't repeat Why your revenue goals aren't your clients' responsibility Where we're going from here with Round 2 Mentioned in this episode: Podcast Launch Prep Week Round 2: February 23-27, 2026 Registration: podfoxmedia.com/launch-prep-week Standard: $199 | VIP with hot seat coaching: $299 (*recommended) If you've been thinking about starting a podcast in 2026, this is your week to plan your launch, strategy, and first six months of episodes. 150: Subscription Fatigue, AI Ethics, and the Mass Exodus Nobody's Talking About (And yet everyone is talking about it)

I'm kicking off 2026 with something I haven't done in a while... business predictions. This is a callback to early Big Brave Business days when Amanda and I would predict what's coming for the year ahead. My friend Kaili sparked this conversation in her community on Threads, and the responses got me thinking about what I actually believe is coming for online business in 2026 (and what I'm not buying into). What I'm NOT predicting: Subscription fatigue means the end of memberships and MRR A mass return to in-person events (virtual isn't going anywhere) The AI bubble bursting in 2026 What I AM predicting: The great online business exodus... people returning to traditional employment after years of hustling More direct commerce integration on social media platforms A very competitive job market as entrepreneurs pivot back to W-2 work The ethics of AI will continue to be contentious, but the tech isn't going anywhere On subscription models: Your revenue goals are not your customer's responsibility. When we create offers based on what WE need rather than what our customers actually want... that's when subscription fatigue becomes real. There's still room for quality memberships and MRR models, but only if they genuinely serve your ideal client. On the exodus from online business: A lot of people entered online entrepreneurship in 2020 out of necessity or because they were sold the dream. Years later, without profits or sustainability, many will choose the stability of traditional employment. And honestly? Jobs still suck. So this is going to be complicated. BONUS REPLAY: Why Business Leaders Refuse to Be Brave About DEIB

We all remember the rise of emphasis on DEIB following George Floyd's murder and the increased attention on the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. But shortly after, in 2023, those DEIB programs and priorities started declining. Now, there is almost a point of pride among companies retiring their DEIB programs and ERGs. My guest today, Michelle Beauchamp, came to me wanting to talk about why this is happening and what are the repercussions. And, in full transparency, we recorded this just 7 days after the 2024 Presidential Election (how appropriate that, with our emotions and anger running high, this episode originally aired the day after Inauguration). Meet Michelle: Michelle, a Consultant, Trainer, Coach, and Author, is a shining example of dedication and commitment. Her unwavering commitment to excellence is evident in her personal and professional growth journey. Her motto, "Unleash Your Inner Champ," reflects her passion for helping others grow. BONUS REPLAY: The Problem with the Course Creation Industry

Alright besties, I'll level with you. I used to have an online course, and I HATED IT. I share why in this episode, but also, I definitely think online courses are in my future business model because I want to make podcasting as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. But I have learned the hard way that online courses are not a get-rich-quick scheme and it's not easy to make them effective. BONUS REPLAY: What Business Coaching Should Look Like

If you've been listening to this podcast for awhile, you know I'm skeptical of business coaching, even though it's part of what I do. I've been one of the lucky ones on the receiving end of a massive investment into business coaching that didn't match my expectations or financial obligation, and I generally feel burned by the industry, like so many other online business owners. But coaching is a real field and business coaching is something a lot of people really could massively benefit from, if it is done right. My dear friend Amber Dancy joins me on the podcast this week to talk about all the ways business coaching SHOULD look, and tons of other REALLY fun topics that I know you're going to love. I have been looking forward to sharing this one with you. Meet Amber: Amber Dancy is a Business Leadership Coach and Consultant with over 15 years of operations experience. She believes that, sometimes, rebelling is the most practical thing a business owner can do—for both their business and their life. Amber works with leaders who are ready to transform one-size-fits-all business practices into human-first approaches, creating safer team relationships and allowing people to show up as their whole, unique selves within the business. She helps clients cut through the BS, using the science of energy and the wisdom of Human Design, to clear their vision and make decisions aligned with their unique energetic blueprint. Once their energetic leadership style is understood and work is defined in a way that truly works for them, she helps identify bottlenecks and energy leaks to optimize business systems and strategies for flow. By creating a work life that serves them first, both the leader and the business thrive. 149: Behind the Scenes: How I'm Scaling Podfox Beyond Traditional Business Advice

In this episode, I walk through the four main areas I'm focused on for growth in 2026 (plus a bonus fifth way that's accelerating everything). I also share why learning from other industries has been more valuable than staying siloed in podcast production advice, my complicated relationship with business coaching, and how Podcast Launch Prep Week came from observing a completely different field. What we cover: Why the traditional scaling playbook (courses, memberships, teaching others) didn't align with what I actually wanted to build The real difference between business coaching that serves you versus coaching that serves the coach's revenue model Four strategic focus areas for scaling Podfox: expanding my sales team, corporate contracts, white labeling with marketing agencies, and proprietary tech How learning to code with pencil and paper in the 90s prepared me for building tech with AI today What Podcast Launch Prep Week revealed about accelerating five-year goals into two-year reality Why I'm betting on account managers instead of an agency model—and what that structure actually looks like The tension of being an anti-capitalist entrepreneur building a business meant to be sold Key Takeaway: Scaling doesn't have to follow someone else's prescription. When you learn from other industries and question the default path, you can build a business that actually fits your vision—even if that means rejecting the advice that "worked for everyone else." 147: Why I Tell People NOT to Start a Podcast (And How This Prequalifies My Best Clients)

You've probably heard the sales advice to share who your offer is NOT for. But it usually gets misused into meaningless phrases like "this isn't for you if you're not ready to invest in yourself." In this episode, I'm sharing the four prequalifying criteria I use to help people assess if they're ready for a podcast (spoiler: it usually takes 3-5 years in business to have these locked in). And why being clear about who's NOT ready actually builds more trust than promising everyone a magic solution. The four things you need: Crystal clear ideal customer Proven offer that's already selling Current profitability Systems and team support so your business functions when you step away This applies whether you're thinking about a podcast OR figuring out how to prequalify people for your own offers. 145: Behind the Scenes: Why I created Podcast Launch Prep Week

In this behind-the-business episode, I share how I adapted a framework from a subscription box business coach (shoutout to Sarah Williams from a previous episode), filtered it through Podfox's mission and values, and created something entirely new. I get vulnerable about the challenges of trying a different sales approach, the gap between people saying "someday I'll start a podcast" and actually doing it, and why building community matters more than going it alone. If you've been thinking about starting a podcast (or know someone who has), this episode reveals why most people quit before episode 11, what stops aspiring podcasters from taking action, and how Podcast Launch Prep Week addresses those obstacles with strategy, support, and community. What I Cover: Why people think about podcasting for years before starting (and how to close that gap) The real obstacles stopping aspiring podcasters: overwhelm, tech intimidation, perfectionism How I adapt business frameworks from other industries What Podcast Launch Prep Week offers (and why I'm doing it in December) The vulnerability of launching something new without knowing the outcomes How this program aligns with Podfox's mission to amplify underrepresented voices Key Takeaways: More than half of podcasters quit before episode 11 Starting a podcast alone vs. with community makes a huge difference Your first episode should be your worst (you'll only get better from there) Adapting others' strategies through your values creates authentic innovation Learn More: Podcast Launch Prep Week runs December 8-12, 2025. 128: Data Bias, Intuition, and Data-Driven Decision Making

American capitalism was built on racial exploitation, from the enslavement of Black people to institutionalized discrimination and its structural impact on our nation's economic and legal systems. This foundation didn't disappear when we moved to digital spreadsheets and analytics dashboards. It evolved. Here's what the business world won't tell you: most of the data we use to measure entrepreneurial success is fundamentally designed to serve capitalism, not entrepreneurs. 127: How Entrepreneurs are Uniquely Positioned to Serve Intersectional Communities

Here's what I've learned from successful entrepreneurs who navigate multiple marginalized identities: They're not succeeding despite their complex realities. They're succeeding because of them. When you can't follow the standard playbook, you're forced to innovate. Your intersectional identity isn't a business challenge to overcome. It's market intelligence that traditional entrepreneurs simply don't have. Meet Today's Speakers: Erin Perkins is deafblind, but you might not notice at first glance. She relies on a hearing aid and cochlear implant for hearing, without which she's profoundly deaf. Her vision is limited to 50 degrees, so if she doesn't wave back when you do, it's likely she didn't see or hear you. Working with independent business owners, coaches, and mentors opened her eyes to the widespread lack of accessibility awareness. This led her to focus on accessibility education. 125: Policy Impacting Small Business Today

My entire career, I've heard entrepreneurs and leaders in business talk about the importance of building business in a policy vacuum. Whether it's because they think it's irrelevant, they don't want to alienate consumers, or they're afraid of getting canceled, the excuses are endless... realistically though, apolitical business is a myth. Especially in times like these. Policy impacts every element of running a small business. But, it can also be intimidating and overwhelming. So today's episode is all about policy that impacts us as small business owners. Meet Today's Speakers: Kirsten Zeigler brings a passionate, human-centered approach to HR consulting that connects seamlessly with leadership across various industries. With over a decade of experience providing HR services to both large and small organizations, she specializes in helping companies build HR processes or entire HR functions from the ground up. Her organized, solution-oriented mindset combined with emotional intelligence allows her to effectively address the people challenges that every company faces, regardless of size or industry. https://www.kdzhrconsulting.com https://www.instagram.com/kdz_hrconsulting/ Lin Sok is a Montreal-based financial advisor, mortgage broker, and real estate investor who aspires to be a catalyst of change in the financial industry. BONUS: Leveraging Sales Psychology in Times of Economic Uncertainty

The online business world is having a collective breakdown. Everywhere I look, entrepreneurs are questioning everything: their offers, their messaging, their entire business models. The narrative is consistent: "Nothing's working anymore." "People aren't buying." "Maybe I should just give up." But what if the problem isn't your business? What if the problem is that capitalism taught you to extract value from overwhelmed customers, and people are finally saying no? About Kaili: Kaili Meyer is a sales and web copywriter specializing in sales psychology and behavior economics. Her background in journalism and psychology paired with her time spent as a thought capital writer in the finance space equip her with a unique perspective on consumer behavior and how to drive sales even in times of economic volatility. 124: Your Business is Inaccessible (Let's Fix That)

Here we go with a really big and brave conversation. I brought together some incredible entrepreneurs and accessibility advocates to dig into what true accessibility in business actually looks like. Honestly, when you hear about the diversity of accessibility needs, it can feel overwhelming and expensive—it's tempting to just keep doing what you've always done. But this roundtable pushes us to think about accessibility completely differently, and these guests share practical ways that all businesses, no matter the size, can do better without starting from scratch. Erin is passionate about teaching businesses to be more accessible, using her personal experiences to promote true inclusion at every level. Her mission is to make the world more accessible, one business at a time. https://www.mabelyq.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/erineperkins Erika Stanley is a branding and AI strategist, the founder of Mile End Digital and the AI Queens Society. 123: Generational Shifts of Leadership in the Current Political Climate

One thing the internet loves to talk about: the problems with the upcoming generation. I always took so much of the millennial commentary personally, until I realized every single generation gets the same judgment. In a world that is rapidly changing with evolving technology, ways of work, politics, and more... I thought it would be super interesting to bring a group of thought leaders together to explore how the way of work and leadership is changing for Gen Z and Generation Alpha. If you know me, you know I'm in my AI exploration era. 120: Why Mission-Driven Branding Matters

What does it mean to create a brand that stands for something, and why does it matter? This week we are opening season 3, which looks a little bit different! Each week, we'll be opening the podcast with a Big Question, and some of the bravest thought leaders in online business will come together to mastermind our way through the question.
