BioTalk!

Hello! Ryan and Eric here - we're both PhD students at Washington State University Vancouver where we study ecology and evolutionary biology. Not only do we study biology, we love to talk biology! And what better way to talk biology than to set up interviews with visiting guest speakers in our Integrated Biological Science seminar series! In this podcast, we sit down with the speakers of the WSU-Vancouver biological science seminar series and chat about unique research, the journeys of how each guest came about in science, and a fun mish-mash of other topics.

  1. 6

Episode 6: 'Quail, Crickets, and Science Education' with Dr. David Zonana

In this episode we have a fantastic chat with Dr. David Zonana, a professor at Clark College in Vancouver Washington (our back yard!) David has done some amazing field research across his career and wants to bring the spirit of research in science to the classroom for everyone to get just as hooked as we are!

  2. 5

Episode 5 "YY males and the tipping point" with Jen Poirier

In Episode 5, we talk with Jen Poirier from the US Fish and Wildlife Service about unique methods to control invasive fish species, journeys to non-academic research work, and the best places to fish in Washington and Oregon!

  3. 4

Episode 4 "Eureka moment: proving the Rhizopene pathway" with Dr. Barney Geddes

In our 4th episode, we sit down to have a brief chat with Dr. Barney Geddes, visiting WSU Vancouver from North Dakota St. University; Dr. Geddes studies the intricate dynamics of the nitrogen-fixing Rhizobia and legume plant symbioses. His work is building towards synthetic versions of this symbiosis within non-legumes that could increase crop yield while reducing dependence on chemical nitrogen fertilizer applications. We chat about both his research and development of his specific interests but also learn about his biggest scientific failure, his biggest 'aha' moment, and where he'd most like to travel to.

  4. 3

Episode 3 "I'm a very excitable person" with Julianna Halza

In our third episode, we speak with current PhD student in the biological sciences, Julianna Halza, who breaks down her research in community ecology and broad effects from the most famous ecosystem engineer: the beaver! We also talk about birding being a 'gateway science activity', the difference between lentic and lotic systems, and Julianna's favorite beaver fact!

  5. 2

Episode 2 - "Khaki shorts and super nerdy" with Dr. Felipe Barreto

Howdy from the tidepools! In this episode we discuss multiple levels of biological organization, the journey of Dr. Barreto to science with motivating individuals, and just the coolest little zooplankton critters (Tigriopus copepods) that hang in Pacific coast tidepools

    Episode1_LukeReyes

Our introductory episode! Hello! Eric and Ryan here - we're PhD students in the School of Biological Sciences at WSU-Vancouver. In this podcast series, we interview each week's seminar speaker so that the graduate student and broader WSU-Vancouver community has a chance to get to know our speakers, their research, and their journey in academia or in their profession. In this inaugural episode, we interview newly minted Dr. Luke Reyes, fresh off of his dissertation defense which was our first seminar of the Fall 2024 semester. Luke completed his PhD in Dr. Marc Kramer's lab at WSU-V studying the fine details and broader outcomes of extreme weather events and climate patterns in the Pacific Northwest and was an absolute delight to chat with. So sit back, and let's learn about a unique science journey!
