Black and White Movie Night

Black and White Movie Night

Oh, no! Another unnecessary but thoroughly enjoyable movie review podcast? Yep. Black and White Movie Night is hosted by Brendan (white) and Brittany (black). We choose a new theme each month and discuss (and often argue about) all the things we like, love, hate, and can't believe about the films we select. Do we have a film studies degree? Absolutely not. Do we work in the industry? If you count background acting and writing movie reviews for a local newspaper over 15 years ago...absolutely yes. Deep dives and spoilers always included. New episodes every Tuesday.

The Right Stuff: The New Kids on the Block

ep. 36: Brittany feels cheated by not witnessing a landing. A racist joke takes Brendan out of the movie. Both are pleased about how well the film holds up. Our last film for April's theme of "Out of This World (a.k.a. Space Movies)" is The Right Stuff (1983). The Martian: There's Life On Mars and It Was Grown In Human Sh*t

ep. 35: Brittany is entertained but feels the supporting actors didn't have enough meat. Brendan appreciates the simplicity of the story. Project Hail Mary comparisons abound. Solaris: Too Slow or Simply Meditative?

ep. 34: If Brittany sounds confused it's because she is. Brendan enjoys being forced to wonder. They ponder what makes a human a human. Our next film for Out of This World (Space Movies) is Solaris (1972).   You can e-mail us at [email protected]. -Music: Brendan and Brittany -Credits for the movie being reviewed: Writer(s): Stanislaw Lem, Fridrikh Gorenshteyn, Andrei Tarkovsky Director(s): Viacheslav Tarasov Chapters: (00:00) B & B version 2 (03:30) Film, Theme, Cast + Credits (05:20) The 6-7 Synopses (06:49) Like, Love, Hate, Can't Believe (21:37) Plot Discussion: Deep Dive and Film Analysis Starts Here (1:14:48) The Brittany Scale + Next Week's Film   SHOW NOTES: Other Episodes Mentioned: Interstellar: Holes Full of Ghosts, Love, and Amazing Visuals (ep. 18) Project Hail Mary: Just Right or Too Funny For Its Own Good? Project Hail Mary: Just Right or Too Funny For Its Own Good?

ep. 33: Brittany inexplicably forgets the difference between nouns and adjectives. Brendan tries his best to not compare the film to the book. Both of them were reminded of Interstellar (2014) but only one of them would be honored to die in space for their fellow countrymen—make that "worldmen." The first film in April's theme "Out of This World" is Project Hail Mary (2026). P.S.: Michael Crichton was not involved with the writing of Future World (1976) and Brendan possibly meant Coma (1978) and not The China Syndrome (1979). The Color Purple: Spielberg Searches for Whimsy in Misery

ep. 32: Brittany thinks the sitcom-esque comedy ruins the tone but she also can't count in this episode so...who is she to judge? Brendan wonders if a white director and white screenwriter takes away from the movie. They rank the 1986 Best Picture nominees from most deserving to least deserving. The last film for this month's theme of Oscars-1986 is The Color Purple (1985).    You can e-mail us at [email protected]. ep. 30: Brittany thought this had potential. Brendan thought Raul Julia's performance was great. But they are both quite flabberglasted about this movie. Black and White and Gold: Sirat + The Voice of Hind Rajab—Real, Fictional, and Dramatized Child Loss

ep. 29: Black and White and Gold—2026 Oscars | chapter 5: Welcome to Black and White and Gold, our Oscars mini series where we discuss the films nominated for this year's Oscars. In the first film, Brittany continues her lifelong struggle with visual metaphors and concepts. Brendan's impressed how much is accompished visually with limited scenery. They both wonder how desert ravers actually operate. It's Sirat (2025) which is nominated for Best International Feature Film (Spain) and Best Sound. The last film they discuss  seems to live between a movie and reenactment. It's The Voice of Hind Rajab (2025) which is also nominated for Best International Feature Film (Tunisia). Black and White and Gold: One Battle After Another—It's Not As Problematic As You Think

ep. 28: Black and White and Gold—2026 Oscars | chapter 4: Welcome to Black and White and Gold, our Oscars mini series where we discuss the films nominated for this year's Oscars. Buckle up for a car sickening ride and fireworks. Brittany seems to prefer the name Charlotte to Charlene and Brendan points out every detail you may have missed. And how do you feel about "eureka" as a substitute to Brittany's overused "ahhhhh!"? In this episode we discuss One Battle After Another (2025) which is nominated for so many Oscars we can't be bothered to list them all. P.S. Brittany rewatched the smoking weed in the car scene and she thinks it was a hard blow as opposed to spitting (01:33:00). Brendan is glad he finally gets to see the inspiration for a few Kingpin scenes. Our next film for March's theme of Oscars-1986 is Witness (1985). P.S. It was definitely Mrs. Lupone. Black and White and Gold: Marty Supreme—A Desperate Ping Pong Player Living A Dangerous Life

ep. 25:  Black and White and Gold-2026 Oscars | chapter 2: This is Black and White and Gold, our Oscars mini series where we discuss the films nominated for this year's Oscars. This episode was recorded back in December 2025 immediately after watching the film and before our series' existence and regular format; it's missing our usual segments but it's still a decent discussion, especially if you play a drinking game and take a sip every time Brittany says the word "like." Brendan's able to describe vintage-inspired lingerie in detail. Brittany learns that vagina-scented candles exist. They both can't help but make comparisons to Uncut Gems. And do you agree that most babies are ugly upon arrival? It's Marty Supreme (2025) which is currently nominated for Best Lead Actor, Directing, Casting, Best Picture, Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Production Design, and Original Screenplay. Black and White and Gold: Hamnet—Dark Material x2

ep. 24: Black and White and Gold-2026 Oscars | chapter 1: Welcome to Black and White and Gold, our Oscars mini series where we discuss the films nominated for this year's Oscars. Brendan finds it fascinating that Shakespeare is "hunky." Brittany's concerned about Will's cut that never heals. When someone tells you to "touch grass," are they usually saying it with an attitude? The first film we're discussing is Hamnet (2025). It is nominated for Best Film, Director,  Lead Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Casting, Costume, Production Design, and Original Score. P.S. We apparently—in our old age—forgot about fleas being a cause of plague and that lymph nodes also exist in your neck. FYI, a swollen lymph node is called a bubo, hence, bubonic plague. Prizzi's Honor: Jack Nicholson Has A New York? Accent, Y'all

ep. 23: Brendan's surprised a comedy was nominated for Best Picture. Brittany kept waiting for it to get good. They both are amazed by the number of nominations it received. Our first film for March's theme of Oscars-1986 is Prizzi's Honor (1985).  P.S. Our bad, it was Kathleen Turner who voiced Jessica Rabbit and it was Spencer Tracy who starred in Libeled Lady, not Clark Gable. Blue Valentine: Real-Life Relationships and Dirty Bathrooms

ep. 21: Housewife Brittany would take absolutely no shit about her cooking. Brendan doesn't appreciate a good bird caw when he hears one. And FYI, it's called a melodica flexible tube. The next film for February's Unhappily Ever After theme is Blue Valentine (2010). P.S. For your viewing pleasure, the dirty toilet scene is around 32:18 in the movie. And upon further investigation, it looks like she's sitting on top of the lid with a pee sound effect added in post. What do you think? You can e-mail us at [email protected]. Apocalypto: Zero Wolf Should Watch Peaky Blinders

ep. 17: Brendan's survival skills are unrivaled. This movie somehow reminds Brittany of The Little Mermaid and Peaky Blinders. There's a big, huge, earth-shattering disagreement about a movie prop that prompts Brittany to ask listeners to weigh in. And FYI, quicksand is real; stay calm and lighten your load. The Man Who Came To Dinner: Insult Comedy But Witty

ep. 13: Brendan likens Sheridan Whiteside's personality to Marty Supreme/Mauser's. Brittany would rather smell a familiar vagina than a strange one. Would you pronounce Fauntleroy as Faunt Leroy or Fauntle Roy? Uncut Gems: When Gambling Is No Longer Fun

ep. 9: Brittany can't decide if a certain rule was spoken or unspoken. Brendan attempts to explain Passover with limited knowledge. We wonder why people have a strange compulsion to show people unsettling movies. Also, Brittany would like to go on record and state that 1.) she does take out the trash often and 2.) despite her aggressiveness and disrespect towards poetry night in this episode, she has nothing against poetry and thinks it's kinda great. "Really," she says. The final movie of November's theme which started as The First Movies We Saw As A Couple and ended as The First Movies We Saw As A (Sorta) Couple is Uncut Gems (2019). 30. 9

Joker: A Clown's Longing To Have Rhythm

ep. 7: Batman has a founding father as an ancestor. Bellhops and movie ushers have basically the same job in the early '80s. Arthur never ceases to amaze with his dance moves, and seven episodes in, can Brittany nail the podcast closing? (spoiler alert: No. No, she cannot.) ABOUT THIS SHOW
