Bookish Ambitions

It takes ambition to write a novel. It takes ambition to adapt it. And honestly? It takes ambition to keep adding books to a TBR that already has a waitlist. Bookish Ambitions is a podcast for everyone who loves stories a little too much — the ones on your shelf, on your screen, and the ones that live rent-free in your head. Cousins Catherine and Caroline are here for all of it, with wit, sharp takes, and zero apologies.https://patreon.com/BookishAmbitions

Howl's Moving Castle, Studio Ghibli & The Animation Renaissance

We are talking about one of our all-time favorite films this week and we are not calm about it.This week: Caroline finished Margo's Got Money Troubles and finally has Beach Read in hand, Anne Hathaway's production company bought the rights to a book before it was even published (we have questions), Jamie Dornan is reportedly playing Strider in the new Lord of the Rings film (we have thoughts), and then we dive headfirst into Howl's Moving Castle — the book, the Studio Ghibli film, Miyazaki's anti-war statement, Sophie's curse as an unexpected act of liberation, Billy Crystal as Calcifer, and the Sarah J. Maas connection we did not see coming. Also: the Kiki's Delivery Service re-release just broke box office records and Disney is reportedly bringing back 2D animation. The animation renaissance is real and we are here for it.For a full list of every book, show, and movie we mention this episode visit our Patreon: http://pateron.com/bookishambitions

Jane Austen, 50 Adaptations & Regency Dreams

We tried to cover Jane Austen in one episode. We failed gloriously and we have zero regrets. This week we do a 3,000 foot view of all six Jane Austen novels, dive into over 50 years of adaptations, and end up planning our future trip to Bath. Along the way we talk Bride & Prejudice, Clueless, Sanditon, the 2005 Pride & Prejudice hand flex, and why Johnny Lee Miller is the unsung hero of Jane Austen films. Plus: Netflix is releasing both a Pride & Prejudice series AND Sense & Sensibility and we have feelings. Also this week: Caroline is over 20,000 words into her novel, Catherine finished Seeking Persephone and started Graceless Heart, and we added approximately everything to our TBRs.For a full list of every book, show, and movie we mention this episode plus links to find them, visit our Patreon!http://patreon.com/bookishambitions

Treasure Island, Muppets & Morally Gray Pirates

This week we take a trip down memory lane to one of our all-time favorite adaptations and honestly, the movie that started it all for us. We talk Treasure Island the book, Muppet Treasure Island the masterpiece, and why a 1996 Muppet movie is secretly one of the best book-to-screen adaptations ever made. This week: Caroline finished Throne of the Fallen, Song of Achilles, and approximately four other books during spring break (she reads fast, we've accepted this), Catherine finished her Love, Theoretically reread for book club, and we go deep on Treasure Island — the book, the Muppets, Wishbone, Treasure Planet, and why Long John Silver might be the original morally gray character we've all been chasing ever since. Also: we need pirate romance recommendations and we are not joking. Please send them. For a full list of every book, show, and movie we mention this episode plus links to find them:http://patreon.com/bookishambitions

To Spice or Not to Spice? Heated Rivalry & Phantom

Episode 3 is here and we went there. This week we talk about spice in books — when it works, when it doesn't, and why we think the balance matters more than the heat level. We also gush about Heated Rivalry and share some unexpected recommendations. This week: Catherine is rereading Love, Theoretically for a new book club, Caroline is still deep in her very spicy fantasy novel (no regrets), we debate what makes intimacy in books actually good, and we talk about Heated Rivalry on HBO — possibly the best book-to-screen adaptation either of us has seen in a while. Plus: Rivals on Disney+, Phantom of the Opera thoughts, and Caroline's debut book Let Her Return is officially out in the world! For a full list of every book, show, and movie we mention this episode — plus links to find them , visit our Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/c/BookishAmbitions

Rom-Coms, AI Controversy & Emily Henry; The Books We Meet on Podcasts

This week we dig into a breaking story from the book world that has everyone talking, rank our way through the Emily Henry catalogue, and debate whether People We Meet on Vacation was really the right book to adapt first. This week: Catherine finishes the Once Upon a Broken Heart trilogy and lands in a reading lull, Caroline is deep in a spicy fantasy with serious yearning energy, and we get into the Shy Girl AI controversy: what happened, what we think about AI in the writing process, and why it's a gray spaghetti mess. Then we spiral happily into everything Emily Henry: our rankings, our hot takes, and all the adaptations coming our way.For a full list of every book, show, and movie we mention this episode, plus links to find them, visit our Patreon:http://patreon.com/bookishambitions
