Mothering as Art with Dr. Lyneia Richardson
SHOW NOTES Transcript Dr. Lyneia Richardson's Bio Dr. Lyneia Richardson is a mother, psychologist, educator, and the editor of Mothering as a Work of Art: A Black Mama Anthology. Her work centers on Black maternal mental health, exploring how race, culture, and identity shape the experience of motherhood. Through therapy, research, and storytelling, she reframes mothering as a powerful, creative, and culturally rooted practice. Dr. Richardson supports high-achieving mothers navigating identity shifts, perinatal transitions, and the invisible labor of care. Amazon link: https://a.co/d/03eUlKoK Lyneia Richardson, PhD Assistant Professor of Counseling Despite my academic and professional achievements, one of my greatest accomplishments is being the mama of two of the most beautiful little beings. Following the birth of my first-born child, I was able to find my passion in working almost exclusively with the perinatal population. My clinical and research interests have centered around the issues of women from the African diaspora in the context of race and culture, highlighting the intersectionality of race and gender. While my research has always focused on the mental health needs of women, becoming a mother allowed me to see a more unique experience of womanhood that calls for an even more specialized approach. My clinical approach acknowledges that mothering is not an individual experience but one of community, and I strive to create that village-community experience for my clients. As a psychologist and educator, I take a similar approach to teaching by recognizing the inherit community in the educational experience. Following the African philosophy of Ubuntu, "I am because we are," I strive to create an experience of community and connectedness in the online learning community environment with my students. Generate Hope with Nicole Lynn Lewis
Today's podcast guest, Nicole Lynn Lewis is truly a BRAVE GIRL living her purpose where she is reducing poverty one family at a time. In 2003, Nicole graduated from the College of William & Mary as a teen mother who had overcome homelessness and a drug-infested environment to achieve the impossible. She's a nationally known author and speaker on topics such as teen pregnancy and parenting, youth development, goal achievement and self empowerment. After several years in the workforce honing her skills in communications and nonprofit management and learning about the needs of teen parents across the country, Nicole founded Generation Hope in Washington, D.C. in 2010. The 501c3 provides mentoring, resources and services to teen parents to become college graduates and help their children enter kindergarten at higher levels of school readiness. It's truly a two-generation solution to poverty. Named a CNN Hero in 2014, Nicole has used her skills in social entrepreneurship to launch an organization that is making a real difference. Fewer than 2% of teen mothers earn a college degree before age 30, but since 2010, Generation Hope has helped almost 200 teen parents in college, provided more than $600,000 in tuition assistance, and celebrated 76 college degrees. Their Scholars' graduation rate is almost double the graduation rate of low-income college students and almost nine times the graduation rate of single mothers nationwide. All of their 2018 graduates were living above the poverty line within six months of graduation. 92% were employed full-time and 30% were enrolled in graduate school. This is quite a legacy to say the least. I know that you will enjoy hearing from Nicole about her work leading Generation Hope and how connected she is to the teen parents that she serves. I encourage you to check out her organization and consider how you can support her work either as a volunteer or donor.

The Final 8th with Bridgit Dengel Gaspard
Today's Brave Girl is Bridgit Dengel Gaspard, a licensed social worker and creativity coach in New York City that has also appeared as a SAG actress on the daytime soap opera, A Guiding Light and done stand up comedy! Bridgit's energy is contagious and it comes across in the interview as she shares her story and what she's focused on teaching the rest of us. She's an expert in "voice dialogue" and she explains how she uses this framework in her private practice and to even help her with auditions. Bridgit shares with us what voice dialogue is and how it can be used on your personal transformational development path. She is an active workshop presenter and teaches social workers, nurses, coaches, body workers, mental health practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists and others. We also talk about how so many of our beliefs and habits are formed in our subconscious before the age of 7 (or even in utero) and why we need to interrupt the patterns and pay attention to our self-talk. Bridgit's book, The Final Eighth is scheduled for release next year. She coined this term as she watched her talented, energetic and motivated clients stall in front of their finish line, for no good reason. The final eighth refers to the transformational process of taking the steps necessary to complete a project, finish a goal, realize a dream, love yourself and flourish. I love that Bridgit has uncovered this phenomenon and that she's put it into a book form for high achievers to better understand what makes them stop.

Build A Ministry with Kelly Leonard
On today's show, I am happy to introduce you to former corporate executive, super connector and The B.O.O.S.T. podcast host Kelly Leonard! Her Brave Girl story is inspiring and motivational on so many levels. Kelly studied accounting in college and became a CPA but quickly figured out that she didn't have the personality of an accountant. She shifted to a role in corporate training where she has worked with government agencies, non-profits, private and public industry. Very much a people person, Kelly thrives as a speaker, coach, consultant and trainer. On the show, she talks candidly about how she dealt with personal challenges when she transitioned out of the corporate world and into being a small business owner. We recorded this episode earlier this year and she shares her perspective on what she has learned in the last thirteen years as an entrepreneur. She is a wealth of knowledge around LinkedIn and how to use it to promote your brand and value to the world. Just last month, she became the director of training for Cook Ross, a management consulting firm based outside Washington, D.C. She continues to feed her inner Oprah as the host of the Small Business Network, a television show that supports the Metro D.C. small business community. I love Kelly's philosophy of "build a ministry" and how it inspires her body of work in the world. A true servant leader, Kelly is wise beyond words. Demand Support with Molly Bowen
Meet Molly Bowen, a friend of Megan Urban (from episode 43!) on today's Brave Girl podcast. I love our conversation and am grateful for the new connection. Molly practices law and writes books in Wimberley, Texas while farmsteading with her husband and three sons. She wrote her first book Mommy Lawyer to teach her children about her career but, more importantly, to give herself and other mommy lawyers a tool to help teach young children to be more understanding, supportive, and proud of their working mother. Mommy Lawyer is the first of a series of children's books dedicated to developing a more compassionate and supportive relationship between working parents and their children. Molly knows firsthand the challenges working mothers face when trying to balance both career and motherhood. She took the bar exam nine months pregnant with her first child. A few days later, her son was born, and Molly landed a job at a fast-paced litigation firm. Two more baby boys followed, and, within three years, Molly was juggling a heavy caseload at work and three little boys at home. After taking the time to teach her children about her career through Mommy Lawyer, Molly discovered her children were less disappointed and more understanding when she occasionally missed a special day at school or didn't make it home in time to tuck them in. While we may never fully eliminate "mommy guilt," Molly hopes this book will help children see their working mother's career in a more positive light. Molly shares why we should all be strong female role models for our children and other women in the workforce. We also talk about work-life balance in the world of work today and how important it is to be grateful. One of her greatest lessons from the move to the Texas hill country is to "wake up every day and choose happiness wherever you are." We also talk about how she bet on herself and asked for what she wanted and was able to get it. Molly shares why you need to DEMAND SUPPORT, a concept promoted by Sheryl Sandberg in her book Lean In. Molly's personal story and the lessons she learned on her journey as a practicing attorney and mom are truly inspirational. I hope you agree!

Let Go with Sherry Samuels
I am super excited for you to meet Sherry Samuels of Chrysalid Transformations, a certified life coach, writer and workshop leader in today's Brave Girl episode. She tells her story of how she supports women and teenage girls connect to their inner voice and trust themselves. She shares how she teaches what she has learned in her dark moments in the "rabbit hole" and how she committed to herself and learned to let go. She helps her clients open the door to their inner voice and start living a life of purpose. A "check the box" girl, Sherry talks about how this mentality did not serve her and why talking about mental health issues is so taboo in her community. When she got to the place of allowing herself to breathe and be curious, she was able to transform who she was in the world and begin to share her gifts. I love Sherry's advice on why we need to look in the mirror and tell ourselves that we love ourselves. We talk about how self love is the foundation for being able to show up as your best possible version. We talk about the importance of journaling, meditating, listening to music and having a faith practice.
