A whiff of Musk
We're back! Nothing like Supreme Court justice and an unhinged billionaire fighting for the soul of Brazilian democracy to get Gareth and Larissa back on the metaphorical airwaves. This was recorded just when things kicked off, with X-Twitter getting banned, fines being imposed on those who attempt to circumvent it, and the creation of the verified account Alexandre Files.Since then, a collegiate decision of five Supreme Court justices upheld Moraes's decision and a claim of unconstitutionality has generated quite possibly the first subpoena to a sitting Supreme Court justice.Fun times!Thank you for listening and see you where the skies are blue!

State of your Nuts: Amazonas
Hi, friends! Sorry we're late! This week was supposed to be a simple state-themed episode. But then there was a coup attempt in the United States, so the if you're sick of hearing about it, just jump to the mid-point of the episode. Listen to the whole thing to get some good, old-fashioned Larissa rants. Also, since the recording of the episode, the situation with the pandemic in Amazonas has become more dire. People are lining up for oxygen, and dying without it. Bolsonaro has blamed the state for not handing out hidroxicloroquine and ivermectin, drugs known to have no effect on Covid-19. So, that's the latest. There are possibilities for international donations, which we'll add to our show notes (even though the government should be the one doing it). As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for out graphic design and all essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

Nut of Knowledge: the one with the light for (almost) all
Hello, friends! In today's episode, we talk about Gareth's level of attractiveness, Mario Lopez's next venture, and Brazil's energy grid. Yes, because Amapá is still having issues and power outtages and the thing is, this is not a new problem. It's just gotten worse recently with the substation going offline. So, get ready for some data-filled rants! And find that data on our show notes. At 45:50 we have content warning, as there was another case of extreme police violence against black people. If you are in a position that you are unable to hear about sensititve topics like that, feel free to jump to the 48:37. We would like to mark the occasion of 1000 days without Marielle Franco, city councillor in Rio de Janeiro, whose murder is still unsolved. She was black woman. As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and the essential workers out there, keeping us safe. #blacklivesmatter #vidaspretasimportam

The one with a CW because it talks about structural racism and violence
Hi, friends! Some housekeeping: we've been more consistently posting the pod on Saturdays and it actually seems like people prefer that anyway. So, that's now our new day of release - SATURDAY. Also, we wanna do a mailbag episode, so if you have questions about Brazil, Wales, politics, wrestling or something you want our answer to, DM us @brazilnutspod or [email protected], we're still late this week because, well, life is messy and and we gotta make do. Forgive us?This episode is a rough one, but we do keep it light at the beginning, as usual and give a content warning before the real content starts. In this episode, we talk The West Wing, other questionable TV choices on our part, and the genocide of black youths in Brazil. On November 19th, João Alberto Silveira Freitas, 40, was killed at the hands on two security guards, in broad daylight, with 15 witnesses. He was a black man. We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and wish him a happy birthday. We also wanna thank all essential workers, more likely to be in positions that are underpaid, such as waiters, delivery services, drivers, janitors, housekeepers and, in Brazil, more likely to be black and exposed to Covid-19. #blacklivesmatter #vidaspretasimportam

Breaking Nuts: finding money where the sun don't shine
Hi, friends! Another week that feels like a year, but here we are, still with you. This week we bring you some fresh, warm nuts, which is saying something, since we're talking about senator Chico Rodrigues (DEM-RR) and the unusual place he chose to hide his allegedly illegal money.Since the recording of this episode, Rodrigues's lawyers have sent out a release saying the money was to pay the staff in his family's company. To which we say, we need stricter labour laws. Also, Rodrigues has taken a leave of absence, meaning his son has INDEED taken his Senate seat. Coolio.Next week we'll be doing a special HALLOWEEN MOVIE NUTS episode, with the film GOOD MANNERS (2017), by Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra. We will NOT discuss the film AT MIDNIGHT I'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL (1964), by Zé do Caixão as mentioned in the episode. Apologies for our mistake and the confusion. We'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all the essential workers out there, keeping us safe.

Breaking Nuts: the one with money for black candidates
Hi, everyone! It's pod day!Today we break the news about a new campaign financing rule, that should improve chances for the election of black people in Brazil. Also, this was supposed to be a short episode, but apparently we a physically unable to do that, so enjoy us talking about Kim Kardashian, Avril Lavigne, and flat earthers. Btw, Larissa made a booboo, and campaigning in Brazil actually begins on 26th - the 15th is when party conventions end. She says sorry.Last, but definitely not least, we'd like to dedicate this episode to Grannie Edith Muriel Hutt (1917-2020), who will live forever in our hearts and in the kindness of her daughter and granddaughter. As always, we'd like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design, and essential workers, for keeping us safe. #stayhome #blm

The one where Larissa talks football! No, really
Hello, sports fans! This week we decided to stick with the military dictatorship and talk about Brazil’s victorious 1970 World Cup campaign and why it was actually a huge political win for dictator-in-chief, Emílio Garrastazu Médici. So listen up for some pretty creepy, nationalistic music and slogans, ramifications during the 70s (and ones that last until today), Pelé’s role in all of it, and how Marta is the world’s most awesome football player (don’t @ us about this). As always, we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, and all essential workers out there, keeping us safe. Welsh Nuts: The one with the devil from Swansea
Hi, friends! Pod day is here, so let us rejoice!Larissa was swamped this week, so instead of our regular Nut of Knowledge, Gareth took the reigns and gave us some of that Welsh history we all so desperately need. The fact that this revolves around a statue of the Angel of Darkness is neither here nor there.Larissa and Gareth would like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design. Part 2: Abolition of slavery - The one with freedom, but no rights
Hi, friends! Look at us, all on time and everything! In today’s episode we talk about some Australian guy named Kevin, Trump and Bolsonaro’s inability to stand upright, and finish our discussion on the abolition of slavery in Brazil. So, this is a CONTENT WARNING, as some parts of our discussion may be a little heavy for some of you, especially now.As promised, there are some dates, facts, and names, and Larissa goes off on a few tangents, analyses, and rants. It wouldn’t be us without a Larissa-rant. And also as well, don’t mind the few obvious edits – lots of details that were very important to get right. We’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski for our graphic design. We also wanna all the essential workers out there, especially ones in minimum-wage jobs, and protesters fighting for racial equality and the end of police (brutality).

Part 1: Abolition of slavery - The one with the many shades of inequality
Hi, everyone! We are super late, yes, we know. It was a sound thing. ‘Nough said.Anyway, in this episode we talk, electoral reform in U.S. (again!), sex toys, Nic Cage, British cuisine and oh yeah, we begin our discussion on the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Mind you, this is just part 1 of 2. To get you guys in the know, we talk miscegenation, colourism, socioeconomic class, Machado de Assis, and the current Brazilian census. Next episode will be the more historical facts and stuff, including rebellions and quilombos, and some of the consequences we deal with today, which are in evidence with the worldwide protests.Oh yeah. At the end of the pod, Larissa talks about vinegar against tear gas. Use a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water, ok?As always, we’d like to thank Uoster Zielinski, our beloved listeners, the essential workers, and the protesters. Really, you are awesome.

Welsh nuts: the one where Gareth schools Larissa on wrestling
Hi, friends! Sorry we're a little bit late, but here it is, fresh from the oven, our brand new episode! And things are bit different for this one: Gareth takes the lead and talks wrestling and Donald Trump and, once again, makes Larissa say something she never would and now it's recorded for the whole world to hear (well, that part is pretty standard, isn't it?). Careful listening around kiddies. Although there's nothing Welsh about the topic, Gareth remains quite Welsh, thus the title for this role reversal episode, in lieu of our regular Nut of Knowledge. Have fun and thanks for listening!Larissa and Gareth would like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design. They would also like to thank the essential workers and protesters out there, making this world slightly less awful. This episode is dedicated to Luís Fernando Vale Gomes, who would've loved this story, but never got to hear it - shine on, you crazy diamond.

Breaking Nuts: The one with all the Cummings and goings of the Bolsonaros
Hello, friends! Happy Friday, aka Brazil Nuts Day! Today we got a doozy for you as Larissa rants away about the Bolsonaro family, government, and how this had led Brazil to be one of the worst countries in dealing with the pandemic and Gareth rants away about Dominic Cummings weird eye exam and total disregard for the British public. This is Brazil Nuts, tipping our hats to everyone who does topical podcasts, because it’s hard to keep up and keep the edits clean! Speaking of clean, some of us have got quite the potty mouth, so listen wisely around the little ones.Thank you for everyone who’s been supporting us, thank you if you’re new here! Hello, friends and welcome to this week’s Nut of Knowledge! This week we’re back with a quickie, episode, that is, on the song that we use to open and close our pod. Part 2: The one where we go back to the... present?
Hi, friends! To keep with our schedule, we’re releasing part 2 of our political parties saga today. So the parties continue, but they're the kind where the cheese dip has been at room temperature for several hours, and everyone is nervously eyeing the exit worried that the host could bust out a Twister board at any moment. The sexiness, as usual, is all up to Gareth. This episode deals with all the nutty goodness of Brazil post-military dictatorship and up to now. This one is a bit… listen with caution around kids? Okay, have fun!Larissa and Gareth would like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design and all the essential workers who are keeping us safe.Song is “Corta-Jaca”, by Chiquinha Gonzaga, written in 1895 and performed by people we don’t know but think is copyright free.

Breaking Nuts: The one that made Larissa cry
Hello, everyone! Again! Twice in the same day – but for good reason. This is our special episode on the coronavirus pandemic and how it has been affecting Brazil. Or rather, how the existing structure and politicians in Brazil are shaping the consequences of the pandemic in the country. This episode touches on Bolsonaro, the military in his cabinet, differences between states, and, more importantly, the lack of accurate numbers. Brazil has now, officially, nearly 80.000 cases and over 5.000 deaths. When we recorded, on 29 April, it was closed to 72 thousand cases and the city of Blumenau (SC), lifted lockdown and saw it case number shoot up by 173%. The country has become one of the most affected countries in the world, something that has gone severely underreported by the international media.Don’t forget to also tune in to our regular episode, where we discuss the Brazilian public healthcare system, the SUS.Oh, as usual, bit of a disclaimer: we’re still fixing up our sound, so please don’t mind any little bumps here and there. We made this episode over the course of one week due to this issue, so some things might have been be repeated; but the data is all as recent as the day of recording.

The one that made Gareth go AAAAAHHHH
Hi, everyone! Welcome to our first episode! We are so grateful you’re here, listening to us babble. First things first: (TW) this episode discusses violence against women, particularly rape, on two separate occasions. If that’s not something you can hear right now, we completely understand if you wanna skip this one. Second thing: SOMEONE did not record the first couple of minutes of the episode, so the audio is a little funky – it normalises real soon. Third: this episode was recorded on International Women’s Day, right around the day when Elizabeth Warren dropped out of the United States’ primaries. Why does that make a difference in a Brazilian politics podcast? Because we discuss mandatory voting, yaaayyyyy! So, stick around, listen about IWD, Elizabeth Warren, the existence of a ginger sloth, and how Brazilians cast their votes! If you like the episode or if you like us personally, please like, rate, subscribe, all that good stuff that puts us up on the rankings and gets more people to listen to us. If you don’t like the episode and you don’t like us, can you still do it? Please? It’s good karma, we hear. Also if you REALLY liked it and if you can, you can buy us a coffee on our Ko-fi page! Isn’t that fun?Larissa and Gareth would, as always, like to thank Uoster Zielinski for the graphic design, and all the essential workers out there, who go out, so we can stay home.Podcast music is: “Corta-jaca” by Chiquinha Gonzaga

The one with socialised medicine
Hello, everyone! Here we are, with a brand new episode! With the pandemic ranging on and the number of cases in Brazil growing, we thought a bit of background on the largest public healthcare system in world would make for an interesting topic. Socialised medicine, yay!Bit of a thing though: we “banked” a few episodes before we started releasing and this one was actually recorded a bit later – so don’t mind the couple moments of “remember when we talked about this?”, because you haven’t actually heard that. And also as well (as our lovely Gareth Davies would say), we’ve made a special episode on the pandemic alone, so make sure you listen to that.Thank you for everyone who’s been supporting us, thank you if you’re new here! Thank you to Uoster Zielinski for the graphics and to all the essential workers out there.
