The Firefighter's Toolbox: Modern Equipment and Techniques

Fighting fires means staying ahead of the curve, and it is essential for both safety and effectiveness. Recently, our team at Bring Back to Porch had the opportunity to explore the latest advancements in firefighting techniques with the Medicine Hat Fire Service, specifically focusing on the new Nozzle Forward Training Program. We will break down what this program entails, the differences in equipment being used, and how these changes impact firefighting strategies today.Chapters00:00 Introduction00:31 Training on New Hose and Nozzle Equipment01:05 Evaluating Equipment for Modern Firefighting04:26 Differences in Firefighting Techniques with New Equipment08:50 Nozzle Forward Program Explained13:13 Adapting to New Techniques and Equipment15:30 Impact of Modern Construction on Firefighting19:00 Efficiency and Effectiveness in Firefighting20:07 Maintenance and Lifespan of Fire HosesThe firefighters in our city are prepared for all types of fires. When they train, they train for the worst case scenario s, we were invited to experience a portion of their training that took place on the roof of the bus terminal in downtown Medicine Hat. For 4 days in early May, all four platoons took turns learning and using some new equipment that will allow them to fight fires while moving. The term they used was “Flow and Go”, it allows the firefighting team to work in unison to continue to manouver while pushing forward. The technique allows them to continue to cool the gasses in the air and get water on the fire in a more controlled and rapid fashion. What Is the Nozzle Forward Program? The Nozzle Forward Program is a systematic approach to engine company operations developed by Aaron Fields in Seattle, Washington. It provides firefighters with a framework to advance their operations in various fire environments. The training focuses on enhancing decision-making skills, enabling firefighters to assess situations effectively and act accordingly, regardless of their experience level. The Importance of Adapting to Changing Fire EnvironmentsFires are evolving, becoming hotter and more unpredictable. The Nozzle Forward Program is not merely a response to these changes; it is a proactive approach to preparing firefighters for the challenges they face. By implementing this program, departments can ensure that their teams are equipped to handle the complexities of modern firefighting.Innovations in Equipment: A Shift to Fixed NozzlesOne significant change highlighted during the training sessions was the transition from automatic to fixed nozzles. Previously, automatic nozzles adjusted water flow based on pressure, which could lead to inconsistencies. With the new fixed nozzles, firefighters can expect a steady stream, providing better control and reducing the risk of injury. This change simplifies operations and helps firefighters maintain focus on the task at hand. The new nozzle design enhances control, allowing firefighters to maneuver more effectively in tight spaces. The fixed nature of the nozzle eliminates the risk of nozzle whip, a dangerous phenomenon where the nozzle can jerk unpredictably, potentially harming firefighters.Efficiency in Water UsageWith the new equipment, firefighters can now achieve the same flow rate while using less water. This is crucial in firefighting, where water conservation can play a vital role in overall effectiveness and environmental impact. By reducing the amount of water needed, the team can also decrease the physical strain on firefighters, leading to less fatigue during operations.Training Techniques: Hands-On ExperienceDuring training, participants engaged in hands-on exercises that demonstrated the application of the Nozzle Forward techniques. By practicing under simulated conditions, firefighters learned how to advance towards a fire while maintaining a constant flow of water, effectively cooling gases and reducing the risk of flashover. Firefighters were encouraged to think critically and make decisions based on their immediate environment. This approach not only prepares them for real-world situations but also fosters teamwork and communication among team members, ensuring a cohesive response to emergencies.ConclusionThe advancements in firefighting equipment and training, particularly through the Nozzle Forward Program, represent significant progress in the field. By focusing on safety, efficiency, and adaptability, firefighters are better equipped to face the challenges presented by modern fire environments. As these techniques become more widely adopted, we can expect to see improved outcomes in firefighting efforts across the board. Resources:https://www.medicinehat.ca/community-support-culture-safety/fire-services/https://www.facebook.com/MedHatFire/https://afca.ca/event/nozzle-forward/Thank you for listening and sharing you are one in a million! Greg emphasizes the importance of having a balanced team, often referred to as having "strength up the middle." This concept implies that key positions such as catcher, shortstop, and centre field should be filled with skilled players who can contribute both defensively and offensively. The growing concern over environmental issues means more people are seeking practical solutions to minimize their impact on the planet. We’ll explore five effective strategies for reducing waste, inspired by the insights shared at Roots Refillery. From understanding what a refillery is, to practical tips for sustainable living, this episode offers actionable steps you can implement today. What Is a Refillery? The concept of a refillery is simple yet revolutionary. It allows consumers to bring their own containers to refill with household products, minimizing the reliance on single-use packaging. When customers visit Roots Refillery, they can fill up on everything from shampoo and conditioner to cleaning products, all while paying only for the product itself, not the container. This model not only reduces waste but also encourages mindful consumption. Why Reducing Waste MattersAt Roots Refillery, the mission is clear: reduce waste and promote sustainability. In just a short time since its opening, the store has diverted over 100,000 containers from our landfill. This significant achievement highlights how collective small actions can lead to major impacts. Reducing waste not only benefits the environment but also fosters a sense of community as individuals work together towards a common goal. The Impact of Small HabitsEvery small habit contributes to a larger change. Whether it’s refilling a container instead of purchasing a new one or choosing bulk products to cut down on packaging, each action matters. By adopting these practices, individuals can feel empowered knowing that they are making a difference.Common Misconceptions About Refillery ServicesMany people think that using a refillery is expensive or complicated. However, Roots Refillery aims to debunk these myths:- Affordability: Refilling can save consumers 25-30% compared to buying new products in traditional packaging. Also, many products are super concentrated so you aren't paying for watered down products.- Accessibility: The staff at Roots Refillery are trained to help customers through the refilling process, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and informed.ConclusionReducing waste is not just a trend; it’s a necessity for a sustainable future. By implementing these five strategies and supporting initiatives like Roots Refillery, you can contribute to a healthier planet. Valour on the Green: Supporting Veterans Through Golf

Today on Bring Back The Porch Brian welcomes Rhonda Burry, a Hatter who is organizing an incredible event for local veterans from around Medicine Hat.The second annual Valour on the Green golf tournament will be taking place this June at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club. Many veterans face challenges after leaving military service, and initiatives like this tournament aim to bridge that gap by fostering community support and camaraderie. Today on Bring Back The Porch, we’ll explore the origins of the tournament, its growth, and how you can get involved to make a difference.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Purpose of the Tournament01:09 Inspiration Behind the Event03:04 Charitable Beneficiaries and Fundraising04:05 Public Participation and Event Details04:55 Veterans' Feedback and Emotional Impact06:18 Remembering Veterans and Their Challenges08:59 Sponsors and Community Support10:23 Social Media and Prizes11:38 Canada's Growing Support for Veterans12:37 How to Support and Get InvolvedThe Inspiration Behind Valour on the GreenThe idea for the Valour on the Green tournament came from a local veteran who inspired the organizer to take action. Recognizing that service doesn’t end with retirement from the military, the organizer sought a way to give back. This led to the conception of an annual golf tournament designed not just to honour veterans but also to create a platform for them to connect and share their experiences. It’s not just about the game; it’s about creating a supportive environment where veterans can feel valued and recognized. The first tournament saw overwhelming gratitude from participants, highlighting the importance of such initiatives. Many veterans expressed that this was their first experience of receiving recognition and appreciation for their service, reinforcing the idea that their contributions are valued year-round, not just on Remembrance Day.Growing Participation and Community SupportSince its inception, the Valour on the Green tournament has seen a remarkable increase in participation. Last year’s tournament faced challenges in filling the field, but this year’s registration opened on January 1st and quickly filled up with over 100 veterans signing up within hours. The surge in interest is a testament to the community's commitment to supporting its veterans. The tournament not only supports veterans but also opens its doors to the public, allowing community members to join in on the fun. This year, the registration for public participation will begin on May 1st, further expanding the event's reach and impact. It's a wonderful opportunity for civilians to show their support and connect with those who served.Other notes:Years of Service:Between the veterans participating in the tournament and the volunteers supporting the event, there was a combined total of over 2,200 years of military service represented at Valour on the Green.Volunteers – 3CAV:3CAV Coriano Ridge (Medicine Hat)3CAV Ypres (Calgary)Sponsors:Tournament Title Sponsors (to be announced at tournament)CannaConnectMedicine Hat ToyotaMolly Maid (Medicine Hat)Southern Gas and SafetyGenerous anonymous Donor T.R.A.D WORM IND.Colleen & Marty VredegoorV-EH (Veterans and Everyday Heroes)3CAV YpresUSW (United Steel Workers) District 3 – Veterans of Steel CommitteeCorrection: Union Name During Podcast:United Service Workers Union should have been USW (United Steel Workers) District 3 – Veterans of Steel Committee, who donated and sponsored a team.Hey we need your support. Reshaping Sustainablility

Modern energy needs are creating interesting partnerships like the one between the City of Medicine Hat and Big Marble Farms. Brian sits down with Councillor Ted Clugston to discuss the new collaboration and what it means for you the taxpayer.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Energy Partnerships02:57 Big Marble Farms and Power Generation05:49 Regulatory Changes and City Bylaws08:58 Public Utility Dynamics and Rate Setting11:53 Future of Energy in Medicine HatUnderstanding the Partnership: A Win-Win for EnergyThe collaboration between Big Marble Farms and Medicine Hat is designed to optimize energy usage, especially during the summer months when the demand for electricity increases significantly. Why This Partnership is ImportantDuring summer, cities like Medicine Hat experience higher electricity consumption due to air conditioning and other cooling needs. The partnership allows the city to purchase excess power generated by Big Marble Farms, which utilizes a cogeneration system that produces both electricity and heat for its greenhouses. This setup not only ensures that the city has adequate power but also promotes sustainability by utilizing waste heat instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. The Role of RegulationsThe evolution of this partnership was made possible by regulatory changes at the provincial level that allowed the city to purchase excess power from Big Marble, despite its location just outside city limits. These changes have opened up opportunities for cities like Medicine Hat to innovate and adapt to growing energy demands.Key InsightsCouncillor Ted Clugston emphasized several important points during our discussion that highlight the significance of this partnership:1. Meeting Energy DemandsCouncillor Clugston noted, "Medicine Hat is unique in that it uses more electricity in the summer than in the winter." This fact underscores the importance of reliable energy sources, especially during peak demand periods when the city’s electricity usage skyrockets.2. Long-Term SustainabilityThe partnership with Big Marble Farms is not just about immediate needs; it’s also about future sustainability. By generating their own power, Big Marble can support the city’s energy needs while minimizing the environmental impact. The waste heat used in their greenhouses exemplifies a model for other cities grappling with similar issues.3. Community BenefitsCouncillor Clugston explained that the financial structure of this partnership is designed to benefit taxpayers. "When the energy department makes money, it pays a dividend to the tax side," he stated. This structure ensures that the utility remains profitable without burdening taxpayers with higher rates.Challenges and Opportunities AheadWhile the partnership has many benefits, there are also challenges to consider. The city is currently facing a need for infrastructure upgrades to support increased energy demands. This includes developing new substations and ensuring that the power supply remains reliable as the city grows.Addressing ConcernsOne common question among residents is about the potential for increased taxes due to this arrangement. Councillor Clugston says, "This will not raise your taxes; it may lower them." This transparency is crucial for maintaining public trust as the city navigates these new agreements.ConclusionThe partnership between Big Marble Farms and Medicine Hat represents a forward-thinking approach to energy management that could serve as a model for other municipalities. By leveraging local resources and innovative technologies, cities cannot only meet current demands, but also pave tHey we need your support. They can come in various forms, including pills, powders, and liquids, and contain vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and other substances. With the fast-paced lifestyle many lead today, obtaining all necessary nutrients solely from food can be challenging. This is where supplements come into play. Why Use Supplements? Many people struggle to meet their daily nutritional requirements through diet alone. Supplements can help ensure you receive essential nutrients that support optimal health.    Common Types of Supplements:  - Vitamins and minerals (like Vitamin D and Magnesium)  - Protein powders (whey, plant-based)  - Omega-3 fatty acids  - Probiotics for gut healthWhat is the difference between Supplements and Whole Foods? While supplements can provide essential nutrients, they are not a substitute for a balanced diet. Whole foods offer a complex matrix of vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds that work synergistically to promote health. Whole foods contain fibre, antioxidants, and phytochemicals not found in supplements. They provide a variety of nutrients that support overall health in ways supplements cannot replicate. People should consider supplements if they have specific dietary restrictions (e.g., vegans may need Vitamin B12). If they are recovering from illness or surgery or if they are an athlete or physically active and need to meet higher nutritional demands. How to Choose the Right SupplementsNavigating the supplement aisle can be overwhelming due to the vast array of options available. Here are some tips to help you choose wisely:1. Consult a Professional: Before starting any supplement regimen, talk to a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian.2. Research Brands: Look for reputable brands that adhere to strict manufacturing standards and have their products tested for quality.3. Read Labels Carefully: Check for ingredients, serving sizes, and any potential allergens. Ensure the supplement is appropriate for your needs.Common Myths About SupplHey we need your support. Spaghetti and Meat Sauce for Under $20

Learn how to prepare a delightful spaghetti and meat sauce for a family of four without breaking the bank. Discover tips and tricks from experienced cooks on saving money while enjoying great meals at home.Have you ever wanted to cook a delicious meal for your family without spending a fortune? Tonight on the Porch, we’ll explore how to make spaghetti and meat sauce for under $20, with insights from seasoned cooks Lynnette and Curtis. They share valuable tips on budgeting, ingredient selection, and cooking techniques that can help you create an amazing dinner without the stress.Ingredients You’ll NeedTo create this budget-friendly dish, gather the following ingredients:- Pasta (we used Spaghetti)- 2 onions- 1 clove of garlic- Spices (your choice - we used basil, oregano, Italian seasoning, fennel, salt and pepper)- 2 cans of crushed tomatoes- Olive oil- Ground pork (a cheaper alternative to ground beef)This entire meal can be prepared for about $15.60, making it perfect for feeding a family of four.Step 1: Preparing Your IngredientsBefore you start cooking, it’s essential to prepare your ingredients. Curtis and Lynnette emphasize keeping garlic and onions separate to avoid overcooking the garlic, which can lead to bitterness. To prepare:- Chop the onions and garlic, seperating them to maintain their individual flavours.- Remember that onions should be sweated until translucent, which brings out their natural sugars, enhancing the overall taste of the dish.Step 2: Cooking the SauceOnce your ingredients are prepped, it’s time to cook the sauce:1. Heat olive oil in a large pan and add the onions, stirring until they are translucent.2. Introduce the ground pork to the pan, breaking it apart as it cooks.3. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.4. Once the meat is browned, add the crushed tomatoes and season with your chosen spices.5. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 20-30 minutes to let the flavours meld together.Pro Tip: Budget-Friendly IngredientsUsing ground pork instead of ground beef not only saves money but also allows for a delicious sauce that doesn’t skimp on flavour. Consider shopping for seasonal vegetables to incorporate into your sauce or as a side dish, as they are often cheaper and fresher.Step 3: Cooking the PastaWhile your sauce is simmering, cook the pasta:- Boil water in a separate pot and add salt to enhance the flavour of the pasta.- Cook the pasta according to package instructions until it reaches al dente.- Drain the pasta and mix it with the sauce, or serve the sauce over the pasta on individual plates.Cooking for your family doesn’t have to be expensive. With the right ingredients and techniques, you can whip up a delicious spaghetti and meat sauce for under $20. Remember to keep it simple, use ingredients on sale, and don’t hesitate to experiment with flavours. Did you enjoy this episode? Let us know and we will make more cooking segments. More Than You Think: Redefining Homelessness Support

More Than You Think: Understanding the Broader Impact of The Mustard SeedBrian welcomes Philip Calvert from the Mustard Seed to discuss their new campaign “More Than You Think”. In the realm of homelessness, misconceptions often cloud our understanding. Many view the issue through a narrow lens, forgetting that those experiencing homelessness are individuals with complex stories. “More Than You Think” seeks to illuminate the broader services provided by the Mustard Seed. The campaign aims to reshape the narrative around homelessness. Traditionally, the conversation has centred on immediate needs like shelter and food. However, as Philip explains, The Mustard Seed offers a much more comprehensive suite of services that are vital in moving individuals from homelessness to sustainable living. The campaign highlights that when community members contribute, whether through donations or volunteer efforts, they are part of a larger solution that encompasses far more than just charity. One of the goals of the campaign is to combat the stereotypes often associated with homelessness. Philip emphasizes the importance of language: instead of labeling individuals as "homeless people," we should refer to them as "people experiencing homelessness." This simple shift in phrasing humanizes the issue and acknowledges that homelessness is a circumstance, not an identity. The campaign encourages people to consider the varied and complex reasons that lead to homelessness, moving away from a simplistic view that paints individuals as a monolithic group. It invites community members to engage in conversations that reflect the nuances of each person's experience, fostering empathy and understanding.Events like the Coldest Night of the Year play a crucial role in raising awareness and funds for local initiatives. Philip acknowledges the hard work of volunteers and participants in these events, stating that all funds raised remain in Medicine Hat. This ensures that contributions directly support the individuals who need it most.Rebuilding trust within the community is vital for The Mustard Seed, especially after challenges faced in 2025. Philip outlines three key domains that contribute to building trust. The Mustard Seed is committed to these principles, ensuring that they remain transparent and engaged in the community. The "More Than You Think" campaign is more than just a fundraising initiative; it is a call to action for the community to see the broader impact of The Mustard Seed's work. By understanding the extensive services provided and challenging the stereotypes surrounding homelessness, we can create a more inclusive dialogue that encourages empathy and fosters sustainable solutions. Chapters00:00 Introduction01:31 The Inspiration Behind 'More Than You Think'02:04 Scope of Services and Broader Mission03:17 Campaign Duration and Future Plans05:04 Addressing Stereotypes and Misconceptions06:37 The Impact of Events Like Coldest Night of the Year09:09 Walking in Someone Else's Shoes11:05 Building and Rebuilding Community Trust15:32 Overcoming NIMBY and Community Concerns18:41 Shifting the Narrative to People-Centric Stories19:57 Myth Busting: What Charities Really Do21:43 Intake Process and Personal Stories24:43 Addressing Pride and Asking for Help25:01 How to Support and Connect with The Mustard Seed27:37 Closing Remarks and Community Call to ActionResourcesTheSeed.ca - https://theseed.caGuest LinksWebsite - https://theseed.caThank you for listening and sharing you are one in a million! Distraction or Democracy

Today on Bring Back the Porch, we dive into Alberta's upcoming referendum questions and the real motives behind them. It's a complex situation where the government might be playing a game of optics rather than addressing critical issues like healthcare and education. With a referendum that feels more like a self-fulfilling prophecy than a genuine call for public input, we discuss whether citizens will even engage in this process. The last referendum saw only 38% turnout, and with multiple questions on the ballot, will people feel overwhelmed? As we unpack the implications of these questions, it raises the concern: is this referendum merely a distraction from more pressing issues facing Albertans? 0:00 Introduction 01:02 The Political Context of Alberta's Referendum02:16 Voter Participation and Referendum Challenges03:40 Cost and Distraction of Referendums04:35 Immigration and Political Rhetoric05:49 Constitutional and Federal Negotiations08:17 Alberta Next Panel and Public Engagement09:23 Separation Referendum and Public Sentiment12:52 Independence Movements and Political Persistence14:00 Grassroots Movements and Political Polarization16:22 Recall Petitions and Political Impact17:31 Emerging Political Parties and Future Elections20:27 Potential Leadership and Political Movements21:48 Labour Movements and Political Influence23:46 Media Strategy and Political Flooding25:07 Economic Outlook and Oil Prices29:38 Federal Politics and Leadership Dynamics32:36 City Council Performance and Public Engagement37:10 Conclusion and Future OutlookThe Alberta government has proposed nine referendum questions, which have raised eyebrows and sparked debates. The discussion around these questions reveals much about the political climate in Alberta today. While many citizens feel overwhelmed by the number of issues being addressed, it's essential to understand the motivations behind these questions. The recent push for a referendum can be seen as a strategic move by the UCP to consolidate power and distract from pressing issues such as healthcare and education funding. Jim Groom emphasizes that this is not merely about gathering public opinion; it’s about crafting narratives that serve political agendas. One of the key concerns raised is the potential low turnout for the referendum. Historically, previous referendums have seen limited participation, often due to voter apathy or confusion over complex questions. Engaging citizens in meaningful discussions about these topics is crucial for a healthy democracy. The Alberta Next panel has played a significant role in shaping these referendum questions. However, critics argue that the panel's approach has been biased, steering discussions toward specific outcomes that align with government interests. This raises questions about the validity of the referendum questions and whether they genuinely represent the will of the people. As Alberta grapples with pressing issues like education and healthcare, the referendum serves as a distraction from essential conversations. Citizens must remain vigilant and question whether the government is genuinely interested in their input or merely using the referendum to reinforce its political position.Understanding the motivations behind Alberta's referendum questions is crucial for citizens as they navigate their political landscape. Engaging in informed discussions and actively participating in the democratic process is essential for ensuring that the governmThank you for listening and sharing you are one in a million! ABOUT THIS SHOW

Bring Back The Porch, a podcast about simpler times when folks sat on their porch, and felt a sense of community. Everything was discussed on the porch from life, family, politics, and religion. Hosted by Bernie Leahy, this podcast aims to reignite those conversations, while giving people a chance to share their perspectives.
