Celebrating Environmentalists of the BVI: What do we need to do?

ENV 200: Introduction to Environmental Science and Policy Feet Dirty Task #2I got to speak with four environmentalists in my home country the British Virgin Islands to find out more about their work, the progress they have made in their fields, and the progress that they feel is still yet to be made. In the course of four episodes, we are introduced to Mervin Hastings, Susan Zaluski, Natasha Harrigan, and Angela Burnett who work in diverse areas of the environmental field.

    Angela Burnett of the Environment and Climate Change Unit

    Meet Angela Burnett of the governmental Environment and Climate Change Unit! She has worked as the Climate Change Officer in the Unit for several years, pioneering the BVI's climate change legislation. She now works as the Climate Change Coordinator for a series of projects in St. Lucia.

    Natasha Harrigan of the National Parks Trust

    Meet Natasha Harrigan of the National Parks Trust of the British Virgin Islands! She has worked as the nursery manager of the J.R. O'Neal Botanic Garden National Park since 2014. In collaboration with local and international partners, she has also helped manage the Trust's endemic plant conservation programme.

    Susan Zaluski of the Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society

    Meet Susan Zaluski of the Jost Van Dyke Presevation Society! She was the Executive Director of a local NGO, the Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society from 2008 to 2020. She has recently shifted from that role to become the Director of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College's Centre for Applied Marine Studies.

    Mervin Hastings of the Environment and Climate Change Unit

    Meet Mervin Hastings of the Environment and Climate Change Unit!  He has been working in the Department of Conservation and Fisheries (now the Environment and Climate Change Unit) for around 30 years. He also operates an ecotour company called "Eco Adventures BVI".
