    50: The Power of Words

In this episode of the CheckBox Pro Series, Missy sits down with James Mosley, Superintendent of Yellowstone Schools, for a thoughtful and practical conversation on leadership, communication, and building systems that sustain both people and results. James shares his unexpected path into education, from initially pursuing law to discovering a deep passion for teaching and leadership. Now serving a unique pre-K through high school model in Houston's Third Ward community, he reflects on the responsibility and purpose that comes with leading a school designed to serve students and families with both excellence and care.  The conversation dives into one of the most overlooked but critical leadership challenges: communication. James explains why clarity across stakeholders, from board members to staff to families, is essential for alignment and execution. He shares how even the most complex problems can be simplified through clear expectations, strong systems, and consistent messaging.  James also offers a window into the systems that help him stay grounded in the work. From using OKRs to track priorities, to structuring meetings around real-time challenges, to intentionally separating "office days" and "coaching days," his approach is rooted in focus, visibility, and follow-through. He emphasizes that leadership is not about doing everything yourself, but about building strong teams and creating systems that allow others to execute well.  Throughout the conversation, James returns to a central theme: sustainability. Whether it is being present in classrooms, showing up for his team, or making time for his family, he shares how intentional structure and discipline make it possible to lead well without losing yourself in the process. This episode is a practical and encouraging listen for leaders navigating complexity, offering a clear reminder that when systems, people, and purpose align, meaningful change becomes possible.  Key Takeaways: Why communication with clarity is one of the hardest and most important leadership skills. How simplifying complex problems leads to stronger execution. The role of systems like OKRs in keeping teams focused and aligned. Why leaders must build strong teams to get results through others. How structuring your time can support both leadership effectiveness and personal sustainability.  Connect with James: Connect with Dr. James Mosley on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-mosley-ed-d-62a0a060/ Learn more about Yellowstone Schools https://yellowstoneschools.org/ About CheckBox Pro: CheckBox Pro helps school leaders create sustainability through added capacity, taking repetitive tasks off their plates so they can focus on what matters most. https://www.checkboxpro.com/ Licensed music ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ  Music: Energizer by Chris Phaze licensed through Premium Beat by Shutterstock ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ

    49: Choosing Purpose Over Timeline

In this episode of the CheckBox Pro Series, Missy sits down with Tiana Stephenson, Founder and CEO of The Wright Community School, for a powerful conversation about purpose, persistence, and building a school with—and for—community. Tiana shares her journey into education, shaped by personal loss, a deep search for purpose, and a commitment to ensuring students feel seen, heard, and valued. That purpose now lives in The Wright Community School, a 6–12 charter school designed to help students explore who they are and what they love through early college access, community partnerships, and a strong focus on restorative culture. The conversation offers an honest look at the challenges of planning and founding a school, especially when navigating setbacks outside of your control—like facilities delays that have pushed back opening timelines. Tiana shares how staying grounded in non-negotiables and community voice has guided every decision, even when it means waiting longer to get it right. She also reflects on what she's most proud of: a deeply committed community that has stood alongside her through multiple application cycles and continues to believe in the vision. Tiana names her leadership superpower as the ability to figure things out and create solutions when they don't exist, and she shares a practical planning system she built to help manage the complexity of leadership while giving herself grace along the way. This episode is an encouraging and honest reminder that founding is not a straight path—and that staying rooted in purpose and community can carry you through the hardest seasons.  Key Takeaways: Why building a school with community leads to stronger alignment and ownership. The realities of founding, including delays and decisions outside your control. The importance of holding non-negotiables, even when timelines shift. How to create systems that support both productivity and grace. Why community support can make the founder journey feel less lonely.  Connect with Tiana: Learn more about The Wright Community School https://www.thewrightcommunityschool.org/ Connect with Tiana Stephenson on LinkedIn https://www.thewrightcommunityschool.org/ About CheckBox Pro: CheckBox Pro helps school leaders create sustainability through added capacity—taking repetitive tasks off their plates so they can focus on what matters most. https://www.checkboxpro.com/ Licensed music ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ Music: Energizer by Chris Phaze licensed through Premium Beat by Shutterstock ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ

    48: What's Saving My Life: Winter 2026

In this quarterly What's Saving My Life episode, Missy reflects on the small (and surprisingly impactful) things helping her navigate the busy winter season—January through March. From systems that reduce mental load to simple routines that bring joy, this episode is a reminder that what sustains us doesn't have to be big or complicated. Sometimes, it's as simple as a shared calendar, a family show, or finally getting your kids to do their own chores. If you're in a full season (and let's be honest—who isn't?), this episode offers practical ideas and gentle encouragement to pause and notice what's working in your life right now. \Key Takeaways: Small systems can create big relief. Tools like a shared digital calendar or a planning spreadsheet can significantly reduce daily friction. Kids can—and want to—contribute. Creating clear expectations around chores builds independence and reduces parental load. Shared experiences matter. Whether it's a family TV show, the Olympics, or an Oscars watch party, having something to enjoy together builds connection. Look for ways to "stack" your time. Pairing connection with productivity (like folding laundry while catching up with friends) can be both efficient and life-giving. Lower the bar to make things sustainable. Simplifying holiday decor or meal routines makes it easier to maintain traditions without overwhelm. Future planning can be energizing. Booking trips or mapping out summer childcare provides something to look forward to—and reduces future stress.  Resources Mentioned: Skylight Digital Frame (for shared calendars, chores, and lists) Kendra Adachi's (The Lazy Genius) Homemade Granola Recipe https://www.thelazygeniuscollective.com/blog/the-best-granola-ever?rq=granola Missy's Summer Camp Planning Spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZFBk-ER6cDRtxfurSkQbMs0s6iiBbzNS6HDZaMgDGnU/edit?usp=drive_link Connect with Missy: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/missy-couch-5626b8176/ About CheckBox Pro: CheckBox Pro helps school leaders create sustainability through added capacity—taking repetitive tasks off their plates so they can focus on what matters most. https://www.checkboxpro.com/ Licensed music ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ Music: Energizer by Chris Phaze licensed through Premium Beat by Shutterstock ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ

    47: CEO: "Chief Everything Officer"

In this episode of the CheckBox Pro Series, Missy sits down with Nicholas Ditto, Founder of Fort Worth STEAM Academy, for an honest look at life in the middle of a school's planning season. Nicholas shares his journey from aspiring public defender to educator and now founder, driven by a deep belief that access to high-quality education shapes opportunity. He explains why middle school is such a critical moment—before students begin disengaging—and why that urgency led him to launch a new charter campus in Fort Worth. The conversation explores the realities of the planning year, where "CEO" quickly becomes "Chief Everything Officer." From nonprofit paperwork and marketing to facilities and finance, Nicholas reflects on the steep learning curve founders face long before students arrive. He also shares the energizing moments that make it worthwhile—like gathering founding families and staff and watching a community begin to form. Nicholas names his superpower as staying focused on the few priorities that truly drive outcomes. He also shares practical systems for managing time, communication, and task—simple structures that help sustain him during an intense season of leadership.  Key Takeaways: Why middle school is a pivotal moment for student trajectory. 46: From Vision to Reality

In this episode of the CheckBox Pro Series, Missy sits down with Shonqualla West, Founder and Superintendent/CEO of Unparalleled Preparatory Academy, for an honest conversation about what it really means to lead during a school's founding year. Shonqualla shares how growing up in a small rural town with limited school choice shaped her belief that students deserve early opportunities to explore who they are, what they're good at, and what's possible for their future. That belief now lives at UPA, a career immersion middle school where students "try on" careers through STEM-focused, hands-on, and interdisciplinary learning. She reflects on the realities no one prepares founders for—the constant zooming in and out, the many hats, and the tension between staying deeply involved while learning when to step back. Shonqualla also talks candidly about building her first leadership team, the importance of strong operations support, and the joy of seeing students and families choose—and take pride in—a school that began as an idea on paper. She closes by naming her leadership superpower—bringing bold visions to life through community buy-in—and offers hard-earned advice for other founders: pace yourself, give yourself grace, and keep going.  Key Takeaways: What makes the founding year uniquely challenging—and uniquely formative. Why founders must constantly "zoom in and out" to lead effectively. The importance of hiring strong operations leadership early. How UPA helps students explore identity, strengths, and careers starting in middle school. Why community pride and student joy are powerful indicators of success. A reminder that grace is essential for sustainability in leadership.  Connect with Shonqualla: Learn more about Unparalleled Preparatory Academy https://upaschools.org/ Connect with Shonqualla on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/shonqualla-west-m-ed-35b463229/ About CheckBox Pro: CheckBox Pro helps school leaders create sustainability through added capacity—taking repetitive tasks off their plates so they can focus on what matters most. https://www.checkboxpro.com/ Licensed music ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ Music: Energizer by Chris Phaze licensed through Premium Beat by Shutterstock ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ

45: The Long Game of Leadership

In this episode of the CheckBox Pro Series, Missy sits down with Rosalind DaCruz, Founder and Executive Director of RISE Prep Academies. Rosalind shares her journey from Teach For America corps member and high school history teacher to founding a charter school just three years into her teaching career—and what it's been like to lead and grow that organization for nearly a decade. Rosalind reflects on the evolution of her role from Founding Head of School to Executive Director, naming the often-unspoken challenges of scaling a school network: letting go of daily classroom life, resisting the urge to solve every problem personally, and learning to trust others with work she once owned. She speaks candidly about the emotional weight of this transition, especially as RISE Prep expands from a single kindergarten class into a K–12 network serving up to 1,400 students, with multiple campuses and major facilities projects underway.  The conversation also explores how Rosalind sustains herself through this demanding season of leadership. As a working parent and long-time school founder, she shares the practical systems that help her stay grounded—including a weekly closeout and look-ahead routine that brings clarity, accountability, and grace to both her professional and personal life. This episode is an honest, encouraging listen for school leaders navigating growth, transition, and longevity in the work.  Key Takeaways: What it really feels like to transition from founder to Executive Director as schools scale. In this episode of the CheckBox Pro Series, Missy sits down with Luke Savidge, Principal of Compass Midtown High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Luke shares his journey into education—from growing up in a family of educators, to teaching middle school, to stepping into high school leadership for the first time in his 15-year career. Luke offers a candid look at the realities of leading a high school, including the steep learning curve of credits, scheduling, and compliance, as well as the ongoing work of building relational trust with staff, students, and families. He explains why strong relationships are the foundation that make everything else possible—and how investing in people ultimately creates better outcomes for students.  The conversation also dives into Luke's leadership superpower: organization. He walks Missy through the system he's built to keep himself grounded and focused—a single, living document that tracks priorities, data, staff celebrations, walkthroughs, and even self-care. Luke shares how becoming "Type A by necessity" helped him protect his time, lead more sustainably, and show up better for his school community.  This episode is a practical and human look at what it takes to lead well in a complex environment—and a reminder that systems and relationships aren't opposites, but partners.  Key Takeaways: Why high school leadership feels like a different ballgame than middle school—and what makes it uniquely challenging. How Luke prioritizes attendance and discipline data with a clear weekly rhythm. The importance of building relational capacity quickly when stepping into a new leadership role. 34: Realigning to Vision Every Day

In this episode, I sit down with Dana Stuart Browning, founder of The Texas Girls School, just five days after she opened the doors to her brand-new campus. Inspired by her daughter's experience in STEM, Dana shares her journey from classroom teacher to charter school founder and the vision behind creating a single-gender, STEM-focused, project-based learning environment for middle school girls in Austin. We talk about the challenges of launching a school, the importance of keeping both students and teachers in love with learning, and how strong boundaries and intentional communication systems help her lead with balance and clarity. Key Takeaways: Founding a school requires nimbleness—hiring a mission-aligned team with a "founder's mindset" is critical. Research shows that girls in single-gender schools are more likely to pursue STEM fields, perform higher in math and science, and build stronger peer relationships. 33: Shifting the Mic to School Leaders

In this special solo episode, host Missy Couch shares an exciting shift in the CheckBox Pro Series focus. While past episodes have featured subject-matter experts in education, Missy is pivoting to spotlight the real pros—school leaders who are in the trenches every day. She reflects on trends she's seeing in the field, from the loneliness many leaders feel to the hunger for connection and sustainability, and explains why creating a space for leaders to share their stories, strategies, and "why" matters now more than ever. This is the beginning of a new season of conversations designed to inspire, connect, and remind leaders that this challenging work can be both doable and joyful. Key Takeaways: The podcast will shift from expert interviews to conversations with school leaders currently doing the work. Sustainability in education is about more than efficiency—it's also about mindset, community, and support. Many leaders struggle with isolation and burnout; sharing stories can help create connection. Listeners are invited to nominate themselves or others for future episodes.  Nominate a Guest: If you or someone you know is leading with sustainability in mind and has tips, tools, or stories worth sharing, fill out this nomination form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe7yAPDmx7Mnh-Za6yKw0otmtFGND9e-mMdYW_QGAFnbNly_A/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=102956796630725968003  About CheckBox Pro: CheckBox Pro helps school leaders create sustainability through added capacity—taking repetitive tasks off their plates so they can focus on what matters most. https://www.checkboxpro.com/ Licensed music ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ Music: Energizer by Chris Phaze licensed through Premium Beat by Shutterstock ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ

    32: School Nutrition

Elizabeth Garcia is the Associate Director of Operations in the Development Office at Massachusetts General Hospital. However, in her former life she was the Director of School Operations at KIPP Academy Lynn Middle School, where she led an operations team supporting over 1,000 students and 200 staff members. She also managed the district's nutrition program, overseeing meal service for 2,200 students daily. She geeked out with me today about why a strong nutrition program is important and how to build and assess it. Most Important Question to Ask: Are the students eating the food?! Ops teams are crucial to ensure students have access to nutritious meals, so listen in to learn ways to build or improve upon a program that brings everyone around the table! 31: Lean Management for Dismissal

In this episode, I sit down with Tyler Heath, Chief Operations Officer at Austin Achieve Public Schools, to discuss the importance of strong school operations and how he built an effective elementary school car rider dismissal process. Tyler shares insights into the operational challenges schools face, strategies for ensuring efficiency and safety, and key lessons for school leaders looking to refine their own dismissal systems. Key takeaways: A well-structured dismissal process enhances safety, efficiency, and overall school experience. Thoughtful planning and data-driven adjustments are crucial to optimizing school operations. Common challenges include managing traffic flow, staff coordination, and parent communication. Schools should prioritize clear procedures, staff training, and continuous process improvement. 30: School Psychology, Simplified

In this episode, I sit down with ShaVanety Jones, an early career school psychologist, executive functioning coach, and founder of Academic Fusion LLC. With a unique background in psychology and theater, ShaVanety shares how she helps students—especially gifted learners—build confidence, develop essential life skills, and stay engaged through creative tools like improv and social-emotional storytelling. We unpack the multifaceted role of a school psychologist, why third and fourth grade are pivotal years for student development, and how simple acts like writing thank-you notes can teach powerful life lessons. Key takeaways: School psychologists are trained across 10 domains, serving as both evaluators and advocates for students' academic and mental health needs. ShaVanety's work focuses on executive functioning, social-emotional growth, and early intervention—especially for gifted students who may struggle with organization and behavior. Academic Fusion, her after-school program, blends theater and skill-building to make learning about time management, communication, and peer interaction fun. Simple strategies like preference assessments and handwritten thank-you notes can make a big difference in student engagement and confidence. Third and fourth grade are often inflection points when students begin to disengage from school—early support and skill-building can help prevent long-term academic and behavioral challenges. The job of a school psychologist extends far beyond counseling—it involves legal timelines, coordination, testing, and deep family communication. Academic Fusion LLC currently operates as a B2B (Business to Business), so she is hired by school districts and organizations. However, keep an eye on things because her goal is to work as a B2C (Business to Customers, ie. parents). 29: What's Saving My Life?

In this episode, Missy Couch shares her personal reflections on the things that are saving her life, a concept inspired by Emily P. Freeman of The Next Right Thing and Kendra Adachi from The Lazy Genius. She discusses ten key elements that bring joy and connection to her life, including coffee, book clubs, Audible, soccer, and family traditions. Each topic highlights the importance of self-care, relationships, and finding joy in everyday activities. Key Takeaways:  Reflecting on what's saving your life can be enlightening. Joy can be found even in the small things, like a cup of coffee. Relationships bring purpose and fulfillment to the mundane. Taking time to invest in hobbies is essential. 28: Simplifying School Procurement

In this episode, I sit down with Daniel Casselli, President of BuyQ, to discuss how group purchasing can help schools—especially smaller charter and private schools—stretch their dollars, streamline operations, and build stronger procurement systems. Drawing from his background in education, edtech, and operations, Daniel offers a masterclass in purchasing strategy, explaining how schools can leverage collective buying power, avoid common pitfalls, and set up procurement systems that actually work. Whether you're new to procurement or trying to bring more strategy to your school's purchasing processes, Daniel shares actionable insights that can save you time, money, and administrative headaches. Key Takeaways: Group purchasing helps smaller schools access pricing and vendor support typically reserved for large networks. BuyQ negotiates national contracts that reduce costs, improve compliance, and save time by eliminating the need for individual RFPs. Schools should prioritize clarity in procurement ownership, better alignment between budgeting and purchasing, and modernized systems to avoid capacity drain. Strong procurement policies and procedures must be realistic, clearly communicated, and consistently followed. Procurement is not just about savings—it's about improving the student and staff experience through intentional purchasing decisions. 27: Coaching K-2 Teachers: How School Leaders Can Support Foundational Literacy

In this episode, Markesha Tisby, M.Ed., returns to the Pro Series to dive deeper into how school and instructional leaders can support K-2 teachers in delivering high-quality foundational literacy instruction. Building on her first episode on phonics and early literacy, Markesha now shifts the spotlight to leadership—sharing practical ways administrators, coaches, and consultants can create the conditions for strong phonics instruction to thrive. Whether you're a school leader looking to sharpen your early literacy lens or a coach seeking more intentional ways to guide new teachers, this conversation offers concrete actions and reminders of what great support really looks like. Key Takeaways: K-2 teachers often feel undervalued; leaders should make their support visible and intentional. School leaders don't need to be literacy experts—but they should aim to be lead learners. Strong PD for phonics includes more than just an overview; it requires follow-up coaching, modeling, and space to try without fear of evaluation. Leaders should avoid conflating coaching visits with formal walkthroughs to protect teacher vulnerability and growth. Phonics instruction can't be learned in one session—teachers need continued opportunities to deepen their practice with responsive, data-informed coaching. 26: Building Foundational Readers: Phonics, Confidence & K-2 Instruction

In this episode, I sit down with Markesha Tisby, M.Ed., founder and CEO of Tisby Educational Consulting, to explore the critical importance of K-2 instruction and how foundational literacy sets the stage for long-term academic success. A former early childhood teacher and coach, Markesha shares strategies for integrating phonics into all content areas and building joyful, rigorous instruction that supports young readers. Key Takeaways: Strong K-2 instruction lays the groundwork for a student's future academic performance. Phonics instruction can and should be woven into all subjects—not just reading blocks. School leaders should focus on both instructional practice and student engagement during early literacy walkthroughs. Teachers benefit from routines, research-backed resources, and time to deeply understand foundational reading strategies. Slowing down instruction in the early grades can lead to faster, more sustainable growth in later years. 25: Understanding School Data for Stronger Boards

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Henrietta Muñoz, CEO of the Texas A&M University-San Antonio Institute for School and Community Partnerships. With over 25 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and school-community partnerships, Dr. Muñoz shares why data is essential for school boards and how board members—especially those without an education background—can better understand and use school data to make informed decisions. We discuss the key data points school boards should review regularly, strategies for decoding complex data, and the importance of building trust between school leaders and board members. Dr. Muñoz also highlights the role of board members as strategic partners in school success. Key takeaways: School boards play a critical role in governance, financial oversight, and ensuring academic success. Key data points for board members include enrollment, attendance, financial health, academic performance, and student persistence rates. Data should be presented in diverse ways (charts, infographics, narratives) to accommodate different learning styles. Understanding growth measures in student achievement is as important as absolute performance levels. Board members should embrace curiosity, ask questions, and engage as thought partners rather than passive reviewers of data. 24: Turning Data into Action

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Alicia Martin, CEO and founder of DWG Educate & Serve LLC, to discuss how school and district leaders can effectively use data to drive student success. Known as the "Data Diva Doc," Dr. Martin shares her expertise in data-driven instruction, assessment strategy, and leadership development. We explore her three-step framework—Discover, Work, and Grow—designed to help educators analyze data, implement targeted support, and monitor progress to ensure continuous improvement. Dr. Martin also provides practical tips on making data more accessible, reducing overwhelm, and fostering a culture of data-informed decision-making. Ket takeaways: Schools should move beyond test scores and analyze multiple data sources, including attendance, discipline, and student progress tracking. Effective data use involves a structured process: Discover (Data Analysis), Work (Targeted Support), and Grow (Progress Monitoring). Leaders need to make time for data analysis and classroom observations by structuring their schedules intentionally. Data should be actionable—schools must have systems in place to turn insights into meaningful interventions. Student data conferences empower students to take ownership of their learning and performance. Roger shares insights into how AI is transforming education, from streamlining administrative tasks to enhancing classroom learning. We discuss practical ways school leaders can integrate AI tools, debunk common misconceptions, and explore ethical considerations around data privacy. Key Takeaways: AI can reduce administrative burdens, freeing up educators to focus on students. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude can assist with tutoring, curriculum planning, and data analysis. Understanding privacy concerns and risk tolerance is essential before implementing AI in schools. The key to successful AI adoption is starting small, experimenting, and prioritizing education for staff. 18: Securing a Facility: Building a Team 101

Paul Morrissey is a school leader who understands the woes and joys of securing a facility. With seven campuses, he can attest that no two facility projects are the same. Which is why his advice to any leader looking to secure a facility is: Build a mission aligned team, trust the team to do their work, and be a critical partner to that team along the way. A school is not your building. Find the right space for right now, when you're in an early stage school and be comfortable that that will open up the opportunities in the future. Do your homework. In order to do that successfully you have to be humble, you have to recognize and be able to come to grips with what you don't know, and you have to do the work to learn that as best you can.  Tune in to hear Paul's journey to becoming the Founder & CEO of Compass Rose Public Schools. Glean some insights on what it takes to undergo a facility project with optimism and joy because at the end of the day it is what happens inside the walls of your building that matters most! Andrew Stanton is a Principal and Project Manager at Project Management Services, Inc. or more commonly known as PMSI. He talks through the key responsibilities of a project manager for a facility project. But the thing I honed in on was the importance of having one person on the team who has the big, start to end picture that the leader can lean on. Rather than coordinating with a dozen contractors, developers, architects, etc., the leader is able to communicate and rely on their project manager to keep things moving. Talk about a time and sanity saver!  Tune in to learn more about Andrew and why being a project manager for charter schools has been a meaningful career. 16: Securing a Facility: Design and Build 101

Eric Cohen has been in the business of designing and building charter schools for the last decade! Whether you need a designer, general contractor, or construction manager, Butler-Cohen Design+Build does it all and they are another important member of the facility team. They bring functionality and beauty to the process, so that kids have a place they are excited to learn and grow. 11: School Leader to CEO

Danny Song was a teacher, leader, and founder for 15 years in the urban education sector. He recently transitioned to a CEO role of Give Services, a commercial services company with a mission to give back.  He shared how that transition was made easier by the skills he developed through his time in the classroom and leading schools. Most specifically, the skills of empathy and "knowing how to learn" can be carried over to any industry and make that person highly effective.  From school leader to school vendor, Danny understands the importance of being a strong vendor. Strong vendors allow leaders to focus on what matters most for their organizations, and he recommends school leaders consider the following when vetting potential vendors: As a leader, have respect for your own time. Find vendors that have that same level of respect for your time and expertise. Find vendors that admire the work happening in your school. Do a reference check. Assess quality and attention to detail.  LINKS:  Danny Song (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dannysong1/) - email him at [email protected] if you want to learn more about Give Thread or Give Clean.  Give Services (https://giveservicesco.com/) CheckBox Pro (https://www.checkboxpro.com/)- learn more about the services CheckBox Pro offers to make the work of school leaders more sustainable Licensed music ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ Music: Energizer by Chris Phaze licensed through Premium Beat by Shutterstock ID: ILRNI9DIEHE4JTVQ

8: Navigating Strategic Planning and Fundraising in Education

Ryan Dolibois of the Sarofim Foundation has been in education since the 20th century! With much of his career focused on strategic planning and fundraising, he is able to speak extensively about how and why these two pieces are essential for the growth and sustainability of a non-profit organization, specifically charter and private schools. Ryan quickly understood and embraced three main ideas while leading his school: Your job is to fundraise Your board is your secret weapon Every meeting or interaction has value This was evident in how he structured his calendar on a weekly basis. He engaged community members, collaborated with his board, and rarely found himself behind a desk! When asked how he has managed to stay in education for so long, he had this advice for school leaders: Recharge. Do something fun for yourself. Take a sabbath. Find a day or even a couple of hours each week to just rest. Have an identity outside of the work.
