Drinkin' In The Morning and We Remember David Allan Coe

We lost a legend this week.David Allan Coe passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. Coe was considered one of the pioneers of the Outlaw Country Movement and writer of many songs that went on to be hits for other artists. He put out some controversial content in the 70’s but we are going to focus on the stuff we can play at 8 o’clock in the morning.DRINKING SONGSJohnny Russell Rednecks, White Socks and Blue Ribbon Beer Gary Stewart Backsliders WineWillie Nelson I Gotta Get DrunkWebb Pierce I’m Gonna Hang One On TonightFaron Young Wine Me UpSOMEBODY ELSE’S SONGDottie West Heartaches By The Number (made famous by Ray Price)Ray Price I Fall To Pieces (made popular by Patsy Cline)Charley Pride Help Me Make It Through The Night (Made Famous by Sammi Smith)JUST FOR FUNDave Dudley The Talk of the TownLynn Anderson Two Rolls of Scotch TapeDAVID ALLAN COELongHaired Red NeckTennessee WhiskeyWillie, Waylon and MeTanya Tucker Would You Lay With Me In A Field of StoneJohnny Paycheck Take This Job and Shove ItYou Never Called Me By My Name This is a public episode. Country Disco

There is a quote attributed to Pablo Picasso that says something to the effect of “Good artists copy, Great artists steal”. Which upon further investigation, is probably based on a T.S. Elliot quote. That’s a long way to get to this morning's theme. In early March, friend of the show Nate Gibson, host of Back to the Country on WORT, played 3 hours of Country Disco on his show and provided some history of the melting of Country and Disco genres in the late 70’s including playing some songs deriding the genre entirely. We do not have three hours but we are going to do our best. The internet defines country disco as a musical fusion genre that emerged in the late 1970s. It blended the traditional instrumentation of country music—such as pedal steel guitars, fiddles, and vocal twang—with the driving, four-on-the-floor rhythms, synthesized basslines, and lush string or horn arrangements characteristic of disco.HERE’S WHAT WE PLAYEDCountry Disc Bob Newkirk When I Stop Leaving (I’ll Be Gone) Charley Pride Get It Up Ronnie Milsap Country Disco Lee “Shot” Williams Baby I’m Burnin’ Dolly Parton Friend, Lover, Wife Johnny Paycheck I Can’t Wait Any Longer Bill Anderson I Ain’t Got No Business Doin’ Business Today George Jones Oh Honey - Oh Babe Loretta Lynn, Conway TwittyRing of Fire Carlene Carter Kaw-Liga Hank Williams, Jr. Folsom Prison Blues Jerry Lee LewisI Just Want To Be Your Everything Connie Smith I Will Survive Billie Jo Spears This is a public episode. Bob Dylan

The theme of this week’s show comes from what I’m calling my “Baby Boomer Spring Break” trip.Last week, I drove down to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and spent a couple of days at the Bob Dylan Center and the Woody Guthrie Center. They had so many great artifacts and little documentaries. It is truly amazing to see the breadth of work that man created, especially when you look at the ‘63 to ‘68 era.The rest of my time was spent driving parts of Route 66, hunting for roadside attractions, and listening to Jack Kerouac. (Jack Kerouac definitely stopped at Buc-ee’s, right?)Anyway, one of the things they brought up at the Bob Dylan Center was just how many people covered Dylan’s songs, especially in those early days. It almost reached a point where he was getting upset that other people were having hits with his songs and he wasn’t. (The Byrds had most of their hits with Dylan songs)So, that brings us to this week’s theme: the entire show is going to be dedicated to Bob Dylan covers.HERE’S WHAT WE PLAYEDDon’t Think Twice It’s Alright Waylon JenningsRainy Day Women #12 & #35 Flatt & ScruggsWanted Man George Thorogood & The DestroyersYou Ain’t Going Nowhere Nitty Gritty Dirt BandIf Not For You Glen CampbellTangled up in Blue The Charlie Daniels BandWhen I Paint My Masterpiece Emmylou HarrisWalkin’ Down The Line Ricky NelsonTonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You Tina TurnerThe Man in Me Lonnie MackMaggie’s Farm Lester FlattIt’s All Over Now, Baby Blue The Country GentlemenShe Belongs To Me Ricky Nelson and The Stone Canyon BandOne Too Many Mornings The HighwaymenIt Ain’t Me Babe Johnny CashREMINDER that next week is Vinylthon at WVMO and Classic Country Corner moves two hours ahead to 6am- 8am. When I was in the studio on Saturday morning I was in a panic as no sound was coming out of one of the stations turntables. I had another stack of Uncle Boyd’s records and was unsure if I was going to be able to play them or if it would be an mish mash of Uncle Boyd’s records and what was available in the media library on the station’s computer.Engineer Paul came to the rescue and got everything up and running. The first two songs (David Alan Coe and Willie Nelson) are us literally filling time while Paul was reconnecting lose cables and making sure our sounds were going out on the airwaves. Here’s What We Played David Allan Coe "You Never Even Call Me by My Name"Willie Nelson "City of New Orleans"UNCLE BOYD’S RECORDSRoger Miller "I Get Up Early In the Morning"Ray Price "Letters Have No Arms"Ray Price "Crazy Arms"Waylon Jennings "Honky Tonk Heroes (Like Me)"Merle Haggard & The Strangers "Honky Tonk Night Time Man"Dolly Parton "Jolene (Remastered)"Bobby Bare "Detroit City"Nancy Sinatra "Jackson"Emmylou Harris "Feelin' Single - Seein' Double"Marty Robbins "You Only Want Me When You Are Lonely"Larry Gatlin "Statues Without Hearts"Sonny James "The Cat Came Back (Remastered)"Hank Locklin "Foreign Car"Waylon & Jessi "Suspicious Minds"Stop by Classic Country Corner Saturday Morning at 8 only on 98.7 WVMO or online at WVMO.FM. Vinylthon Episode!

What is Vinylthon?Vinylthon is an annual event for radio stations across the USA and the world who want to celebrate the format of vinyl music by playing at least one hour of vinyl-only music on the two days (April 12 & 13, 2025). Many radio stations do more than one hour (some do up to 24 or 48!) but it's a fun day for both listeners and broadcasters alike. The event is a success because many people are still passionate about vinyl and broadcasting radio shows from only vinyl is an amazing experience for many of today's radio broadcasters. The event is also a fundraiser for our Vinylthon Scholarships, awarded by the College Radio Foundation, a non-profit organization that organizes the Vinylthon event and gives scholarships to college students who want to work in radio. Vinylthon 2025 will be the tenth Vinylthon event.I am lucky enough that the station that I volunteer at 98.7 WVMO is an active participant and curated 48 hours of vinyl that weekend. Here’s what I playedJohnny Cash - Wanted Man - Live at San QuentinJohnny Cash - Wreck of the Old 97 - Live at San QuentinDave Kirby- The HoboGeorge Morgan- The Sounds of GoodbyeTommy Collins - You’d Better Not Do ThatMelba Montgomery - Big Big HeartachesCarl Smith - The Tall, Tall GentlemanConway Twitty - It’s Only Make BelieveLynn Anderson - Stay There Till I Get ThereEddy Bailes - OhioConnie Smith - Cincinnati OhioEd Bruce - Walker’s WoodsAudrey Williams - Tornado of LoveErnest Tubb and Loretta Lynn - Love Was Right Here All The TimeRose Maddox - Kissing My PillowWaylon and Jessi Suspicious Minds This is a public episode.
