Women's History Month Recap with Susan Post and Silvi Hernandez

The safety, security, and communication industry isn’t one you probably think about often, but when anything goes awry with a business or home’s tech or physical security systems, it certainly wreaks havoc. The security industry is predominantly male-dominated like many other fields, with women holding less than one-fourth of the leadership roles in this sector. So, how can females in the security industry pave their own path and rise to leadership roles? On today’s episode of the VCC Women in Construction spotlight series, host Michelle Dawn Mooney speaks with Susan Post, Chief Strategy & Integration Officer, and Silvi Hernandez, Chief Financial Officer, both of Pavion, to continue their series honoring Women’s History Month through discussions about the role women play in the security industry. “It’s really about leaning in and it’s not just females in, some of what I would say, back office, more traditional roles. But even, we have female insulation managers, female service managers. We have project managers. These are exciting roles that women can be very, very successful in and we are excited to see that grow within our organization and even in the industry…I think this is the time. The time is now. All the women out there that are ambitious and excited about premier professions should feel that the opportunities are there and women like myself and Susan are absolutely there to promote and help that growth,” Hernandez explained.Post summarized the purpose of the series, “If anyone gets anything out of these series, is what I said in the first series: Don’t wait to be asked. Ask for what you want or what you want to do and pave your own path.” Susan Post is the Chief Strategy & Integration Officer at Pavion and is an experienced security industry professional with team management and operational program development experience. Women's History Month with Silvi Hernadez, Cicily Wright and Candee Lewis

It’s timely to reflect, during this month, who Ada Lovelace was and how she paved the way for the technology we use today—that’s a big win for society and for women. Lovelace was a 19th century English mathematician and is known for being the first computer programmer. This month is named “Women’s History Month” and is dedicated to all women, to be celebrated for their unending contributions to society. Many of our industries are still male-dominated, even though the paradigm is shifting and more women are going up the ladder. How can we encourage more women to enter these industries, and what are some of the challenges women in this space already face?To get an insight into these topics, today’s Pavion podcast host Michelle Dawn Mooney brought on Silvi Hernandez, Chief Financial Officer, Cicily Wright, Controller, and Candee Lewis, Payroll Director, all from Pavion. They’re the most qualified people to answer these questions and discuss their experiences working in a male-dominated industry. They also chatted about women’s superpower and how they have capitalized on that superpower to succeed.“I love being a woman in this industry. Finance in general tends to be a male-dominated industry, even construction, because Pavion is in the construction environment. Some of the challenges is the ability to leverage communication styles. Finance is one of those roles where you have to be able to ask questions, dig deeper, be thoughtful and have critical thinking. And the challenges around that is it can be perceived that you are being emotional or tough as a female when you are really just doing your role, and perhaps if you are a male, that might not be perceived the same way even if it’s the exact same question being asked. I have come to…admire the fact that women can be successful in these male-dominated industries and functions,” Hernandez explained.“One of the things I find challenging is gaining men’s respect. It takes them a little bit longer to realize and understand the value that I personally may bring to the table. Once I gain their respect, then it’s smooth sailing from there,” Lewis said.“I would say that I’m not particularly assertive; I tend to be more of a listener and kind of can bring ideas after I’ve heard a group speak and I think in the past it’s been challenging if your male counterpart is more assertive. I think what’s helped me is I’ve looked to some of my female colleagues that I respect, and I’ve tried to emulate what I see as successful techniques and it has really worked well for me,” Wright added.“I think it’s just the characteristics of being a woman—the thoughtfulness, discipline, interest, curiosity. These are all very common traits that women have that really provides us a benefit and ability to do our job thoroughly and thoughtfully… I believe the ability to be able to build trust, to be curious certainly does provide a benefit and I leverage that all the time,” Hernandez said.Silvi Hernandez is a talented finance professional who understands the importance of being a true business finance partner to business leaders. She is a skilled communicator, able to build strong working relationships with employees, peers, and the senior leadership team. She is enterprise-minded and has a strong business understanding and a demonstrated track record of providing robust analysis to senior management.Cicily Wright is an accomplished CPA, combining cross-functional competencies in all phases of accounting, finance, team motivation, and management. She is proficient in organizing and strengthening financial operations to maximize performance and profitability. She has developed expert qualifications and exemplary leadership skills in public accounting (the "Big Four and the "leading national firm") and in high-growth corporate environments. She is dedicated to improving relationships, transforming processes, and creating a challenging and stimulating environment for team members based on their individual strengths.Candee Lewis is the Payroll Director for Pavion.

    Catalytic Converter Theft Protection

In the U.S., catalytic converter theft has become one of the fastest-growing crimes in the country, with even some police falling victim to car part theft. Unfortunately, these thefts are sometimes a part of organized crime. With catalytic converters selling for hundreds of dollars apiece, stopping them isn’t as easy as you would think. So, how should you prevent catalytic converter theft from your lot, dealership, or parking space? On the latest episode of ClearConnect, a podcast by Pavion, host Michelle Dawn Mooney converses with Scott Anderton, VP/General Manager for ION247, A Pavion Company, and Mike Wilson, VP of Integrated Solutions, Pavion. The discussion follows the issues and solutions centered around the catalytic converter for theft protection.“On average, a thief can get ahold of a catalytic converter, and remove it in about a minute and a half with the appropriate saws and devices…, and then they can sell that on the market for between $500 and $700 per unit,” said Anderton. Wilson added, “It’s really impactful to car dealerships or lot owners, to insurance companies…we have technology and services that allow us to mitigate and stop this type of theft.”Anderton has been in the video and IT-managed services business for most of his career, where he started as a Senior Network/Systems Engineering Manager for Sprint. He has held leadership roles at numerous enterprises, including the President and CEO of Technology Management Solutions and the Vice President of the Revere Group. Anderton earned his BSEE in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida. Wilson holds over 23 years of experience in field systems integration and has helped make Pavion what it is today. In his 22 years with Pavion (formerly CTSI), Wilson has held numerous roles, including Lead Installation Technician, Field Project Manager, Audiovisual Systems Engineer, and Director of Engineering, to name a few, before becoming Pavion’s VP of Integrated Solutions.

    The 7 Cyber Security Essentials

This podcast focuses on the 7 essentials to keep your business cybersafe, featuring Eddie Steiger, Chief Information Security Officer at ION247, A Pavion Company. Eddie highlights important practices that serve as a baseline for cybersecurity framework. 1. It is crucial to have written cyber security policies including disaster recovery instant response policies. It’s tough to react if an incident happens and there’s nothing written down. Having something in writing that’s easily accessible is point one. 2. Make sure your PCs are patched, and critical security updates are installed within 30 days of release. Third party applications like Zoom, Adobe, and Java are patched. “The reality is software has vulnerabilities, and if you don’t address those vulnerabilities, you leave yourself open to attack,” said Eddie. 3. Back up your data, whether it’s on the server or on your laptop. It’s crucial to make sure you have backups that cannot be altered and move them off the physical infrastructure. 4. A strong password policy is basic, but a lot of companies miss how important it is. Complex passwords with 7-8 characters and multi-factor authentication are critical. 5. Employee training is important due to employee vulnerability. It’s extremely helpful to provide the tools to identify threats, empower them to make good decisions and stop the threat of malicious content. Security awareness training is beneficial to keeping your business safe.6. Email security will block the majority of attacks, since that’s where they come through most. Stop malicious content before it gets to your inboxes!7. Next gen anti-virus applications can look at behaviors on the PC and the network to determine if something is malicious in nature. Traditional applications utilize signatures once downloaded, the problem with those is if it’s a zero data attack, the signature-based product probably won’t catch it.Cybersecurity is a complex topic. ION247, a Pavion Company, has had a lot of success with keeping people safe. Factoring in compliance and regulatory requirements, there’s a lot of information. Cybersecurity is constantly evolving. “Cybersecurity isn’t a destination, it isn’t a few check boxes on a form, you don’t install a tool and write a couple of policies and call it a day,” said Eddie. ION247, A Pavion Company, can help an organization adapt to changing threats or new business requirements. We can help you secure your environment and business, taking what you have, and making it stronger. Our services can help you stay current with the constantly shifting threat landscape. Final thoughts from Eddie were, “cybersecurity is difficult, its necessary, the threat is there regardless of your size, so I would say take it seriously.”To find out more information, on how ION247, A Pavion Company, can help deter cyberthreats from disrupting your business visit https://ion247.com/.

March is Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on and appreciate women’s many contributions to American history. Mooney, Post, Nishiyama, and VanderBrink discuss several topics during their conversation, including: Evolving changes, attitudes, and experiences involving women in the workplace Technology advancements made by women Advice for young women thinking about their careers “I have a daughter at the age where we’re doing college tours right now,” VanderBrink said. “She’s looking at the bioengineering field. And I remember when I was in design school, walking through these universities, it might be one woman in the construction industry and one woman in engineering. You walk through now, and it’s even. There are so many different facets of what we can do.”

Women's History Month with Susan Post, Tennille Quinones and Sandy Wolf

The fire, security, and integration industries are typically male-dominated, but women have made strides in bringing their voice to the table and adding a different, needed perspective over the decades. Women are managers, directors, and chief officers in the operations field. The number of women in these positions grows every year with improved work environments and open conversation. How can women continue to celebrate success and their careers, while also still facing the prejudices of being in a field more associated with men? On today's episode of The Women’s History Month Miniseries, host Michelle Dawn Mooney sits down with Sandra Wolf, Service Manager at The Protection Bureau, Tennille Quinones, Director of Operations at Firecom, and Susan Post, Chief Strategy and Integration Officer at Pavion, to talk about the challenges and successes of working in the operations field as women. “I was taught a long time ago by my mentor that a true sign of a good leader is someone who’s always trying to grow that next person to take their position,” Wolf said. “Whatever knowledge I have, I’m trying to give it to everybody else. I’m not going to hold that knowledge in, or anything like that. When my team wins, that is a huge win for me. I get to sit back, and I’m proud of it. And I know that I had a hand in that.” Sandra Wolf is the Service Manager for The Protection Bureau, a Pavion company. She has been with The Protection Bureau for 21 years, and in the security industry for over 33 years. Tennille Quinones is the Director of Operations at Firecom, a Pavion company. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and women's rights and the important role women have played in shaping society and history. But Looking forward, what do you hope to see in terms of progress toward gender equality in your industry, and what can we all do to help make that progress a reality? On today's episode of the Pavion Podcast, host Michelle Dawn Mooney speaks with Susan Post, Chief Strategy and Integration Officer, Pavion, to discuss how the representation of women in history has changed over time and what impact this has had on how we understand the contributions of women to society and in their careers. Susan Post's core advice: By expanding our understanding of women's contributions to history, we can challenge the stereotypes and biases that have historically marginalized women. It is also important to recognize that gender equality is an ongoing struggle and that we must continue to advocate for policies and initiatives that support women's advancement and empowerment. "You look back, and you see whether you are looking at security, fire, finance, and you look at roles women have contributed, and we'll through a little bit about it in the series about inventions and women," said Susan Post "I worked in sales, and they'd say yes! She can do this. My mother, another strong woman, will tell me that if you work hard in all your businesses, you'll be fine. This snippet sticks with me," said Post.
