Clubhouse Grouse

Host Gabriel and sidekick Don discuss developments and strategy in major U.S. and international sports. Especially Boston sports.

  1. 18

Episode 6: Time Heals All Achilles Heels … Right?

Gabriel surgically dissects the Celtics’ woes and plots their next moves into the ’25-’26 season, then takes a look at a couple of the most intriguing questions around big league baseball in recent years.

  2. 17

Episode 5: Special Bonus Throwback Pod!

We remember our dear departed Poppy, in his stellar guest appearance from 2021. We discuss that year’s NFL draft and possible baseball MVPs, plus speculate about the right city for a new MLB franchise.  We love you, Poppy!

  3. 16

    Episode 4: Super Stun-Day?

Gabriel discusses this week’s astonishing NBA news — the Doncic trade. He and Don make their Super Bowl predictions. We talk about the remaining baseball free agents as spring training approaches. And we remember the greatest friend of the pod, our beloved Poppy.

  4. 15

    Episode 3: The Distraction Episode

In today’s episode, your welcome distraction from the cares of the world includes an in-depth discussion of this winter’s bumper crop of baseball free agents, a game of MLB “Would you Rather?”, and a short bonus segment on the Celtics’ start. (Spoiler: they're good!) (Recorded 11/4/24)

  5. 14

Episode 2: All In for the Fall

There’s a snap in the air, as we ask: Which baseball teams are (and which aren’t) ready for the postseason? What prospects are we going to see in September? What are the NFL playoffs going to look like?  Gabriel has the 411 on all of it…..

  6. 13

Episode 1: Dream Teams, Trophies, and Garlic Fries

We return for a midsummer review, as the Olympics begin, to look at Team USA basketball, and check in on midseason contenders for baseball awards. Then Gabriel rates where’s the best place to watch — er, eat while watching — a ballgame.

  7. 12

Episode 5: Crunch Time, Deadline, All Time

Gabriel surveys the not-yet-complete (recorded June 9) NBA Finals, looks forward to the baseball trade deadline, and revisits his personal all-time NBA Top 10.  (Note: Jason Kidd played for the Nets in the aughts, not, as stated, in the 1990s, when he was playing for the Mavs and Suns. The editors regret the error.)

  8. 11

    Episode 4: Shohei the Money!

Gabriel returns with a review of the baseball offseason so far -- and a preview of what's to come -- that dares to ask the question: would YOU pay a guy who's never thrown a pitch in the majors $325 million? Plus -- predictions for the NFL playoffs.

  9. 10

    Episode 3: Dog Days Haze

Gabriel does a deep-dive post-mortem after-action report on the recently concluded NBA and NHL playoffs—ooof!—then discusses some actual and possible offseason hoops moves, and gives a midseason baseball report.  (Note: This episode was recorded on 6/19, before the Celtics’ Smart-Porzingis trade.) (Note 2: It was the 2001—not 2000—Mariners that won 116 games. The editors regret the error.)

  10. 9

Episode 2: Do You Feel a Draft?

Yes, we're back, and after a Your Turn to Grouse segment, we're just in time for a review of the NBA season and a look back at the just-completed NFL draft--the THIRD of the Grouse era--along with a grab-bag of hockey and baseball. You'll be shocked at who the big losers were in the draft!*  Recorded 4/30/23.  * You will not be shocked.

  11. 8

Episode 1: You’ve Gotta Follow Them

Gabriel opens the fourth season with a packed episode that includes an NFL playoff update, discussion of the lineup for the ’23 version of a certain northeastern baseball club, and starting with a discussion of the NHL’s Most Dominant Team in Memory.

  12. 7

Episode 8: Two Cups and a Bowl

In our first episode of the New Year* and our Season 3 finale, Gabriel gives you a lively three-parter, with an NFL playoff preview, NHL power rankings at midseason, and a look back at the astounding, just-concluded World Cup.  * This episode was recorded in late December, before the death of the incomparable Pelé.

  13. 6

Episode 7: Cold Stove, Hot Cup

Gabriel reviews the wreckage (so far!) of the  baseball offseason for the Red Sox and everybody else, then makes his predictions for the World Cup Finals. Hey—nice calls on Dansby Swanson and the Cup Finalists! (Recorded 12/11/22.)

  14. 5

Episode 6: “He’ll probably suck there”

Gabriel returns at midsummer after a CG drought with a whole lotta grousing on baseball trades, ballparks, and awards; and finishes with some blockbuster NBA trade scenarios.

  15. 4

    Episode 4: Lockout, shmockout!

As we all breathe a deep sigh of relief for the return of baseball, Gabriel and I are joined for a jam-packed episode by special guest Eamon, MLB insider and stathead par excellence, who discusses the upcoming MLB season (long may it wave!) and a roundup of football, basketball, and hockey.

  16. 3

Episode 3: Switching to the History Channel?

We dive right into the NFL playoffs, including Patriots-Belichicks—er, Bills, then review midwinter news from other sports. Buckle up, New York fans … heavy grousing ahead.

  17. 2

Episode 1: A real pennant race! Well, a real wild card race….

Our 3rd season opener starts with an in-depth look at the exciting stretch run of the baseball season, still under way. (The grouse feathers fly when we make our AL MVP picks.) In the second segment—SURPRISE!—we discuss a sport we’ve never talked about on CG before.

  18. 1

Episode 10: Of Trade Deadlines and Expansion Drafts

From Seattle (Home o' the Kraken) to Yankton, South Dakota, let there be Grousing! Gabriel ends our summer hiatus with a discussion of the baseball dog days and the hockey offseason. And hey—how ‘bout that NBA Finals pick?
