A Bug’s Life: The Delusion of Distribution w/ Justin Hunt

A fantastic panel from ScorpiusFest, called “A Bug’s Life: The Delusion of Distribution” with award-winning filmmaker Justin Hunt.It hit right at the intersection of two things I love talking about film and software.Justin from his own experiences describes the modern distribution machine: how the marketplace actually works, the traps filmmakers fall into, and how to get your film distributed without getting ripped off.One of the most interesting parts of the conversation was his breakdown of platforms like FilmHub and how they can empower filmmakers to take more control of their distribution. The technology powering the FilmHub platform provides real insights for filmmakers on how well their film is doing across platforms. Instead of waiting for the traditional gatekeepers, tools like this are shifting power back toward creators who understand the system and know how to navigate it.For independent filmmakers, understanding distribution is just as important as making the film itself and panels like this are a reminder that the business side of filmmaking is evolving just as fast as the creative side.Huge thanks to Justin for sharing real insight into a part of the industry that too often feels opaque.#ScorpiusFest #FilmDistribution #IndependentFilm #Filmmaking #IndieFilm #FilmHub #FilmFestival #ColoradoFilm #FilmIndustry #IndieFilmmaker

Episode 9 of Colorado FIlms: The Podcast! A conversation with Ron Meyer

On today's episode of Colorado Films: The Podcast! We are speaking with Ron Meyer. Ron Meyer has spent decades working at the intersection of storytelling, science, and the unexplained, building a career that closely mirrors the evolution of independent production in America. As the founder of Center Communications and a longtime resident of Louisville, Colorado, Meyer emerged during a pivotal era when Colorado briefly stood as one of the country’s most active centers for television and media production. Arriving in the state in the mid-1980s, he entered the industry during the rapid expansion of cable television, when emerging networks required vast amounts of original programming and Colorado’s telecommunications infrastructure attracted significant national investment. During this period, the Front Range supported crews, equipment, and post-production resources comparable to major coastal markets, allowing filmmakers to produce nationally distributed content while remaining rooted in the Rocky Mountain region.Working within this environment helped shape Meyer’s practical, experience-driven philosophy toward filmmaking one grounded less in industry mythology and more in craftsmanship, collaboration, and adaptability. Over the course of his career, he has directed and produced a wide range of documentary and feature projects that explore subjects blending science, human consciousness, folklore, and cultural mystery. His films, including Legend of the Spirit Dog, Chasing Bigfoot, and The Bigfoot Alien Connection Revealed, have reached international audiences through television broadcast and modern streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime, demonstrating the continued global reach available to independent filmmakers working outside traditional entertainment centers.Known for approaching unconventional topics with a measured documentary perspective, Meyer’s work reflects an ongoing curiosity about humanity’s relationship with the unknown and the role storytelling plays in examining belief, perception, and experience. Across decades of technological and industry change from broadcast television to digital distribution his career illustrates how Colorado filmmakers have consistently contributed to national and international media while maintaining independent creative identities. Ron also had a role in helping launch Colorado's top two media stars in Trey Parker & Matt Stone. Meyer’s longevity in the field stands as an example of how regional filmmaking communities continue to thrive through innovation, persistence, and a willingness to explore stories that exist beyond mainstream narratives.

Episode 8 of Colorado Films: The Podcast! A Conversation with Evan Cannon and Tyson Kroening of ScorpiusFest

I sat down with Evan Cannon and Tyson Kroening the filmmakers behind Spectacular by Comparison and the new directors of Scorpius Fest and it honestly just felt like three people who love movies talking about why we do this in the first place. They originally attended Scorpius Fest in Park City with their film, not knowing what to expect. The experience was wild, heartfelt, unpredictable and completely human. It stuck with them so much that they decided to document it.That documentary became Spectacular by Comparison. And somewhere along the way, they realized they didn’t just want to tell the story of the festival they wanted to help shape its next chapter. Now Scorpius Fest is in Boulder, and they’re building it around something simple: access, community, and giving filmmakers a real place to show their work. What stood out in our conversation was the intention.Scorpius Fest is about:• First-time filmmakers• Passion projects made with whatever resources were available• Panels on distribution, trailer editing, fundraising, and organizing your projects• Filmmakers meeting other filmmakers and building long-term relationshipsWe talked about what it’s like to submit to festivals. We talked about rejection, momentum, and just starting. We talked about why seeing a film in a room full of people still hits different.Scorpius Fest runs February 28 – March 1 at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder.Spectacular by Comparison screens opening weekend — a perfect introduction to how this whole thing came together. If you’re a filmmaker, film lover, or just curious about how scrappy ideas turn into real events, this one’s worth a listen.Support local film.Show up.Be part of it!#ColoradoFilms #ScorpiusFest #SpectacularByComparison #BoulderColorado #IndependentFilm #IndieFilm #FilmFestival #ColoradoFilm #SupportLocalFilm
