    Schools Don't Teach Democracy

Niche Radio — Children don’t get much autonomy with regards to democracy in schools and they don’t get much opportunity to have input as to how the structure operates. They have very little say when it comes to changing things that do not work and yet this process of schooling carries on in a kind of top-down authoritarian style existence. Yet these children then grow up and we want them to participate in democratic processes even though they have never really explored it

    Liar Liar Pants on Fire

Niche Radio — In the show, I look at why it is important for children to lie and why they should not be punished for it. I also look at how sharing your stress and challenges can bring you closer to your family. One of the things I feel very passionate about is that the soft skills required for us as people to be successful are not taught in schools how then do we go about changing this paradigm?

    Happy Birthday

Niche Radio — There many pieces of academic literature which support the notion that people who are not always as socially confident as what they are "supposed" to be, actually go onto running most of the world. Schools also need to move away from this paradigm where all children are expected to be a showman and are graded according to how confidently they stand up in front of a class speak I read aloud in front of the class. Children are people and all people have their own unique ways of interacting with their society that means that schools, on the whole, should stop rewarding only those who exhibit higher levels of social comfortability and find more broad and meaningful means to appreciate each individual.

    My Boy is a Girl

Niche Radio — What if you were told by your own three-year-old son that he is not a boy and that he is actually a girl? Gender identification is now something we have really begun unpacking and the more we dig the more we are seeing that it is not as simple as telling your child that they are the gender they were physically born into. When stories are shared by people who are actually faced with something as complex as this then it becomes very difficult to boil it all down to simple judgements or blaming it on the ‘modern world’. A podcast which I mention in this episode had a profound effect on the way in which I now view the discussion of children who are transgender. Have a listen to it at howtobeagirlpodcast.com

How to be a Moderate Pirate Captain

Niche Radio — I used to make formula bottles with such precision and speed that I would have put a navy seal trying to break down and rebuild his rifle to shame. I later discovered that this need for perfection and ritual was there to help me deal with the out of control feeling of being a father. Is there a way to be a captain at work and still be able to come home and see your family for the human beings they are rather than just ideas or problems that need solutions?

  6. 7

Your Parents Sucked, How About You?

Niche Radio — Are you raising your children any better than your parents did raising you? We need to change our milestone mentality if we ever hope to have a deeper connection to our children and the world around us.

  7. 6

Should You Let Your Child Opt-Out?

Niche Radio — Should you allow your child to opt-out of sport or cultural programs? Does this open up behaviors which will lead to them never being able to commit to anything they do not enjoy?

  8. 5

Confused White Guy and the Great Glass Elevator

Niche Radio — Over the last few weeks schools have been flung into the public spotlight around policies which assume all children should be held to the same standards. What are these standards? Who decides them? Am I allowed to have an opinion on something I do not suffer the brunt of?

  9. 4

Sleep Training = Fight, Flight or Freeze

Niche Radio — In this episode I look at some research around training your child to sleep. How it works on the brain and what long term effects it may have. I also share with you some exciting news about a conference that is being held in Johannesburg next year, a first of its kind and I know in no way its last.

  10. 3

    Spanking, a necessary evil?

Niche Radio — What happens to your child's brain when you spank them? How do you get your child to do chores? Listen to the latest episode and find out!

  11. 2

Niche Radio — Why has reading become such a chore for children? Why is your child not reading enough or at their grade level? The answer is you! Would you like to know how to help them? Listen and find out!

  12. 1
