SPECIAL: Lost in the Work: How Harmful Programming Rewires the Mind

Children of the Forum is a special series on Confronting the Line, hosted by Lindsey Hartzel, exploring the lasting impact of Large Group Awareness Trainings on young people and those shaped by high-control environments before they had the language to name what was happening to them. This is episode three — and the series continues for as long as there are stories worth telling.Ann Betz came to est through The Hunger Project in the early 1980s, drawn in by a mission to end world hunger through collective will. She became so absorbed in the work that she dropped out of college to be closer to the New York center — a decision that led to others she would only come to fully understand years later. In this conversation with Lindsey, Ann brings both the lived experience and the researcher's lens. As a neuroscience educator and certified coach, she explores what high-control environments actually do to the brain, and why the damage is especially significant for young people whose identities and nervous systems are still forming.Ann explains how chronic stress and unresolved trauma can narrow perception, reinforce survival patterns and make people more susceptible to shame, rigidity and manipulation — even when they are bright, motivated and genuinely seeking growth. She speaks honestly about narcissistic dynamics in personal development spaces, the psychological cost of environments that treat suffering as personal failure, and why so many capable people can spend years inside these spaces still feeling deeply disconnected from themselves. And she offers something rare: a clear-eyed account of what real healing actually looks like — not performing transformation, but slowly, patiently rebuilding trust with your own mind, body and instincts. If you have ever found yourself in a group, program or relationship that left you more confused than when you started, this conversation offers both understanding and a way forward.Resources: https://isthisacultbook.com/confronting-the-line-pod/Confronting the Line is dedicated to the safe and ethical practice of personal and professional development. E63 Cara Cordone | She Tried to Reform the Group That Harmed Her — Here's What She Found

Cara Cordone thought she'd found her people. Then she tried to fix what was broken — and discovered the damage was by design. In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, Anne sits down with Cara Cordone — coach, advocate, and host of Fool's Gold: Discernment in the Age of Grift — to trace how a search for healing and connection led Cara deep inside ISTA (the International School of Temple Arts), and what she uncovered when she started asking hard questions. This is a conversation about what it really means to be transformed — and what happens when the high wears off.In this episode you'll hear:How a COVID-era retreat became a years-long journey into a high-control organisationWhat emotional release techniques actually do to the nervous system — and why the research doesn't support themWhy "you're responsible for your experience" can be one of the most dangerous ideas in personal developmentThe moment Cara encountered DARVO — and recognised it had already happened to herHow a Facebook group meant to build bridges revealed a decade of unaddressed harmWhat ISTA, Landmark, and high-control groups share — and why internal reform almost never worksThe one question that cuts through any narrative: Who benefits?Cara brings honesty, hard-won insight, and genuine generosity of spirit to one of the most layered conversations we've had on this show. This is not a takedown. It's a reckoning.WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR If you've ever left a programme, group, or community feeling like you were the problem — this conversation is for you. E62 The Slow Burn: The Guru Promises Love. What You Get Instead

What happens when the very tools meant to help us grow are turned against us?In this episode, host Anne sits down with Kellie Rhea — an Australian entrepreneur, former animal behaviorist, and horsemanship expert — who spent nearly two decades inside a personal development organization that slowly crossed the line from helpful to harmful.Kellie's story is remarkable: a self-made woman who built a 160-acre ranch, 95 horses, and a thriving multi-faceted business — driven by a genuine desire to understand behavior, both animal and human. That curiosity led her to seek out tools for growth. What she found instead was a system built on undue influence, manipulation, and control.Together, Anne and Kellie explore the slow, quiet nature of this kind of harm — why it's so hard to see from the inside, why "just leaving" isn't as simple as it sounds, and why healing doesn't happen overnight. They also talk honestly about what recovery actually looks like, including the specialist support, the nervous system work, and the community that makes the difference. This conversation is for anyone who has ever felt pulled toward a teacher, a program, or a community that promised transformation — and wondered later whether it really delivered. You don't need to have been in a cult to find something familiar here.In this episode:How the desire for quick healing can make us vulnerableThe difference between physically leaving and mentally leavingWhy professional development often has healthier guardrails than personal developmentWhat it means to dismantle beliefs that were never really yoursConfronting the Line is dedicated to exploring the personal and professional development industry with honesty, care, and curiosity — because knowing the difference between helpful and harmful just might change your life.RESOURCES & LINKS: You can find Kellie on her INSTAGRAM @iamkellierheaRead Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources → https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ Join us Beyond the LineIf this conversation resonated, you’re invited to Beyond the Line—our new Patreon community for listeners who want to go deeper. E61 Can You Be Manipulated? The Honest Answer Might Surprise You

If you've ever thought "I would never fall for that" — this conversation is for you.Anne sits down with author and researcher Jon Caven-Atack (If Scientology Ruled the World, Opening Our Minds) for a candid, wide-ranging conversation about how smart, well-meaning people end up in high-control groups — and why believing you're immune is actually your biggest vulnerability.Jon spent years inside Scientology before becoming one of the world's foremost experts on undue influence and manipulation. Together, he and Anne trace the surprising historical roots of the modern self-help and human potential movement, explore what makes a personal growth program genuinely empowering versus a well-disguised trap, and get real about why our laws, our culture, and our own psychology leave us more exposed than most of us realize. In this episode:The telltale signs that a group or program may be crossing a lineWhy peak experiences feel like transformation — and how that gets exploitedThe difference between healthy belonging and dangerous groupthinkWhat "coercive control" actually means (and why the term itself is misleading)Jon's definition of a destructive cult — and why it applies in more places than you'd expectPlus — Jon is joining Anne as a featured speaker at the upcoming Seek Safely Summit, where they'll be developing accessible education to help everyday people understand and recognize manipulation in real time.https://ilumn8.life/op/the-seek-safely-summit-2/ Whether you're a survivor, a curious mind, or someone who works in personal development — this one's worth your full attention.🔔 Subscribe so you don't miss upcoming episodes 👇 Drop your questions and reflections in the commentsRESOURCES & LINKS: Learn more about the Seek Safely Summit https://ilumn8.life/op/the-seek-safely-summit-2/ Jon Caven-Atack's books: If Scientology Ruled the World - https://a.co/d/0ipOAuVa Opening Our Minds - https://a.co/d/04qRbJLD Check out Jon’s show https://www.youtube.com/@jonatackfamilyfriends6176Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ Join us Beyond the LineIf this conversation resonated, you’re invited to Beyond the Line—our new Patreon community for listeners who want to go deeper. Members receive early access to episodes, bonus reflections, and thoughtful discussions that support ethical inquiry, survivor-centered learning, and safer pathways forward. SPECIAL: From Landmark Poster Child to Problem: What Happens When You Question the System

Brandon began Landmark programs at just 13 years old and quickly became a success story within the organization. But the deeper he went, the more he began to see things that didn’t line up with the promises of personal and global transformation. And when he started asking questions and raising concerns, Brandon says the response wasn’t reflection or change - it was gaslighting. He was told the problem was with him. Over and over again. In this episode of Children of the Forum, Lindsey speaks with Brandon about his journey through Landmark - what began as a seemingly empowering personal development experience eventually became something much more complicated.Brandon shares what it was like to grow up in and around Landmark, the pressure he says he felt to recruit friends, their parents, and even teachers, and the culture inside the organization once he began working for them. This conversation explores identity formation, manipulation, accountability, and the power of trusting your instincts - even when a system insists you’re the one who’s wrong. If you’ve ever questioned an organization that told you the problem was you, this conversation will resonate.Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of sexual abuse of a child and high-control group dynamics. E60 Is Your Coach Ethical? What You Need to Know Before You Hire One

What Makes Coaching Truly Safe — and When It Crosses the LineNot all coaching is created equal — and knowing the difference could protect you from real harm.In this episode, Anne sits down with Ann Betz, CPCC, PCC, MNTC — neuroscience researcher, master coach trainer, and co-founder of BEabove Leadership — to pull back the curtain on the world of personal coaching. They explore where coaching genuinely helps people grow, where it can blur into harmful territory, and how high-control groups and organizations have used "coaching" language in ways that manipulate rather than empower. They dig into the questions you should always ask before hiring a coach, why no ethical coach can promise you results, and why healing from trauma is never a one-size-fits-all, one-weekend solution. Ann also shares her own journey — recovering from cult involvement and a toxic relationship — and what actually worked when no single method had all the answers.Whether you're considering hiring a coach, in a coaching program right now, or you're a practitioner yourself, this conversation is full of grounded, honest insight you can use.In this episode:Red flags to watch for when evaluating coaches and certification programsThe important difference between coaching, therapy, and personal supportWhy promising results is an ethical violation — and a major warning signHow "chosen people" group culture creates harmful us-vs-them dynamicsWhat healing from cult or narcissistic abuse actually looks likeHow to know if a coaching relationship is truly working for you🎙️ Host: Anne L. E59 Prestige, Power & Predators: What the Epstein Case Reveals About Elite Influence

In this episode of Confronting the Line, Anne Peterson and Dr. Ed Gurowitz examine how prestige, proximity, and institutional affiliation can shield harmful behavior.Using the case of Jeffrey Epstein as a reference point, this conversation explores how charismatic figures embed themselves within elite networks, borrow credibility through association, and leverage social proof to build trust. This episode is not about assigning guilt by association. It is about understanding how power operates — and why intelligent individuals and respected institutions can miss red flags. We discuss:• How “credibility laundering” works in elite environments • Why proximity to powerful people feels like proof of integrity • The psychology of halo effect, groupthink, and authority bias • How exclusive access reshapes perception and judgment • Why silence and reputational risk protect harmful systemsConfronting the Line examines the boundary between genuine transformation and exploitation — strengthening cultural literacy around power, influence, and ethical leadership. For a deeper reflection on the psychological and practitioner implications of these dynamics, the conversation continues on my NEW Patreon channel - Beyond the Line.RESOURCES & LINKS: Learn more about Anne & Ed’s Practitioner Studio https://ilumn8.life/op/the-practitioners-studio/ Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ NEW PATREON Community - Beyond the LineIf this conversation resonated, you’re invited to Beyond the Line—our new Patreon community for listeners who want to go deeper. Members receive early access to episodes, bonus reflections, and thoughtful discussions that support ethical inquiry, survivor-centered learning, and safer pathways forward. Special: Children of the Forum - Abandoned for Transformation: How I Lost My Mom to Landmark

As part of Confronting the Line’s ongoing examination of how high-control personal development spaces impact real lives, this special series turns our focus to those who entered Landmark and similar LGAT environments as children—before they were old enough to consent, question, or fully understand the systems shaping them.In this episode, Marlo shares what it was like growing up with a single mother deeply committed to Landmark Education and its transformational philosophy. What promised integrity and personal growth instead created emotional distance, and quickly pulled her mother away.As Landmark became the center of the family’s world, Marlo was left to navigate a controlling and confusing environment with little support. When she struggled, her pain was reframed as resistance, negativity, or personal failure. She reflects on feeling abandoned, blamed, and gaslit, and on the long shadow that blind loyalty to the group has cast on her relationship with her mother.Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of verbal abuse, sexual abuse of a child, emotional neglect, and high-control group dynamics. Listener discretion is advised. This conversation examines what happens when a system that teaches responsibility and integrity doesn’t apply those principles to its own impact, and how children can become collateral damage in the pursuit of transformation.RESOURCES & LINKS: Get to know Lindsey and her story on the episode we did with her recently E58 Growing Up in Landmark: Introducing Lindsey HartzelJoin us Beyond the LineIf this conversation resonated, you’re invited to Beyond the Line—our new Patreon community for listeners who want to go deeper. Members receive early access to episodes, bonus reflections, and thoughtful discussions that support ethical inquiry, survivor-centered learning, and safer pathways forward. E57 | When Institutions Respond—but Don’t Reckon | A Follow-Up with Ben Eisenberg

What happens after someone speaks out—and an institution responds? In this follow-up episode of Confronting the Line, we examine how organizations act when concerns are raised without acknowledging harm. After Ben Eisenberg shared his experience of growing up inside Landmark Worldwide, Landmark’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Harry Rosenberg, responded directly. Shortly afterward, the organization removed references to youth programs from its public-facing websites and stated it has no plans to offer them going forward. At first glance, this response can appear to reflect institutional maturity. At the same time, the communication does not acknowledge harm or engage the substance of Ben’s lived experience—raising important questions about accountability, self-preservation, and how institutions manage risk when scrutiny increases. This episode explores:Action without acknowledgmentInstitutional maturity vs. self-preservationSymbolic change vs. structural changeWhy acknowledging harm is often avoidedWhat ethical responsibility actually looks like in practiceJoined by Lindsey Moon Hartzel, we also examine the developmental and neurological impact of high-control environments on children and adolescents—and why consent, identity formation, and nervous system development must be central to any ethical discussion of youth programming. This episode is not about condemnation. E56 When Dissent Triggers Disinformation

In this episode of Confronting the Line, Anne Peterson is joined by her friend and colleague Chris Shelton—former Scientologist and long-time advocate for people recovering from high-control groups.Together, they unpack a recent online incident involving a Landmark supporter posting what appeared to be insider gossip, disinformation, and misinformation in response to Anne’s work and public commentary.Rather than reacting emotionally or defensively, Anne and Chris slow the moment down and examine it through a wider lens:How insider narratives are used to discredit criticsWhy gossip framed as “inside knowledge” can function as a control tacticThe difference between disagreement and organized reputational attackHow high-control groups train members—often unconsciously—to police dissentWhy critics are framed as “unstable” or “dishonest”How group loyalty turns into misinformationWhat healthy disagreement actually looks likeOr how cult-adjacent dynamics show up outside overt “cults”Chris draws a direct comparison to Scientology’s well-documented practice known as Fair Game, a policy designed to silence, isolate, or undermine perceived enemies of the group. Anne explores whether similar patterns—even without formal policy—can emerge in other transformational or self-help organizations, including Landmark Worldwide. This episode is not about attacking individuals. It is about pattern recognition, media literacy, and learning how to spot coercive behaviors before they escalate. If you’ve ever wondered:Why critics are framed as “unstable” or “dishonest”How group loyalty turns into misinformationWhat healthy disagreement actually looks likeOr how cult-adjacent dynamics show up outside overt “cults”This conversation offers language, context, and tools to think more clearly.RESOURCES & LINKS: Check out Chris’s channel Speaking of Cults    • Speaking of Cults   Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources → https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-... E55 Growing Up in Landmark Worldwide: When Transformation Crosses a Developmental Line

This episode examines the developmental and ethical boundaries of youth participation in transformational programs like Landmark Worldwide. Writer and strategist Ben Eisenberg shares what it means to grow up inside a high-control self-help framework before meaningful consent is possible.Ben’s work is not a takedown. It is a separation.Drawing from a manuscript he originally wrote to understand and deconstruct his own experience, Ben explores how transformational language, psychological tools, and high-control frameworks shaped his development long before he could meaningfully consent.Together, Anne and Ben examine: ** The difference between adult consent and childhood indoctrination** How legitimate psychological tools can become harmful when misapplied** The impact of Landmark Worldwide style teachings on emotional regulation, identity formation, and trauma processing** The weaponization of concepts like “integrity,” “choice,” and “meaning”** Why youth programming crosses a critical ethical line** How unresolved trauma surfaces decades later — in the body, not just the mindThis is a nuanced, compassionate conversation that holds both benefit and harm without collapsing into absolutes. It invites listeners to think critically, reflect honestly, and consider what ethical responsibility truly looks like in the personal development industry.RESOURCES & LINKS: Read Ben’s full manuscript here https://medium.com/@beneisenberg_10514/my-experience-growing-up-in-landmark-education-landmark-worldwide-1aae2ea2582eRead Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources → https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ MODERATION NOTE: While healthy debate and discussion regarding the topics being discussed is encouraged, personal (ad hominem) attacks on people, places or things will be deleted. E54 When Self-Help Turns Harmful: The ‘Choice’ Narrative and Trauma

On this episode of Confronting the Line, we examine some common myths the self-help industry often tries to sell: “Trauma is a choice.”“Healing is a choice.” “You can choose differently.”These ideas sound empowering on the surface—until they devolve to shame, blame, or silence for people who are already hurting.Anne Peterson, Ann Betz, and Brian Arbor dig into:The neuroscience of trauma responsesWhy “choice” disappears inside fight/flight/freeze/fawnHow systems and environments create trauma long before “choice” enters the pictureThe historical roots of PTSD (and why understanding them matters)How shared responsibility changes the healing landscapeWhy “just shift your mindset” is not trauma careThe difference between exploring meaning and assigning blameWhy no one heals in isolationWe also look directly at the ways the self-help and coaching world—especially high-control, high-pressure transformational spaces—misuse the idea of choice to cover up harm, deny responsibility, or demand performance instead of support.Healing is real. Transformation is real. But neither work if presented in an environment that includes gaslighting, shame, or impossible standards of personal responsibility. If you’ve ever wondered whether your trauma was your fault—or whether someone used the language of “transformation” to offer solutions that then didn’t work the problem was never you — and this conversation is for you.RESOURCES & LINKS: Learn all about Ann Betz and her coach trainings at https://www.beaboveleadership.com/ Initial episodes with Brian where he shares his trauma E51 Thoughts on Landmark, Trauma & Moral Injury: A Follow up Conversation with Brian Arbor (Part 1)E36 - Can You Transform Trauma? E53 Gay and Christian: Confronting Shame, Conformity, and the Line Between Faith and Fear

Anne Peterson welcomes Ken Wortley, a former pastor and author of the memoir The Gospel of Secrets, to Confronting the Line. Our show explores how groups—from spiritual to personal development—can cross the boundary from providing help to inflicting harm and exploitation.Ken shares his deeply personal chronicle detailing his journey from a life defined by pretense to one of authenticity. For two decades, Ken served as a pastor within a conservative evangelical environment, struggling intensely to suppress his homosexual identity. He discusses the pressure to adhere to the ideal of a "successful pastor," which included maintaining a "mask of marriage". The conversation explores the confusion and pain that comes with feeling rejected by a community that was once home, and the lengths people go to hide their true selves to maintain certainty and acceptance.Ken recounts the process of his painful divorce—the moment his wife "stabbed the elephant in the living room"—which launched him into a years-long journey of therapy, deconstruction, and unlearning theology. We discuss the pervasive nature of secrets and the "ripple effect" of dishonesty. Ultimately, Ken found acceptance and peace with his partner in Brazil, achieving a genuine connection to spirituality outside of rigid institutions. This episode is a profound examination of the courage required to look within and forgive oneself.RESOURCES & LINKS: Get Ken’s book https://tinyurl.com/4yssakvt and learn more about Ken’s journey or contact him directly via his website https://kenwortley.com/ Get in contact with Anne or read her Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ MODERATION NOTE: While healthy debate and discussion regarding the topics being discussed is encouraged, personal (ad hominem) attacks on people, places or things will be deleted. FINALLY Please consider supporting this channel by clicking subscribe, leaving us a review and/or becoming a member via YouTube.  Your contribution helps make it possible for us to keep having these conversations!

E52 An Emotional Blueprint: Exploring the R.E.M. Model and Self-Help Abuse with Brian Arbor (Part 2)

In this follow-up conversation, Anne Peterson and former Landmark Worldwide Headquarters Staffer Brian Arbor go deeper into the emotional and moral mechanics of high-control transformation environments. Building on Part One, they unpack how Chris Shelton’s R.E.M. Model (Rationalization, Emotion, Morality) helps explain why good people stay in—and rationalize—the harm of exploitative self-help cultures.Together they explore:⚖️ Moral injury — how people violate their own values while trying to “make a difference.”💭 Rationalization and ideology — the mental gymnastics that keep abuse invisible.🧠 Emotion vs. reason — why our emotional systems come first, and why ignoring them can lead to dissociation or harm.😶 “Setting aside your feelings” — how performance culture in LGATs (Large Group Awareness Trainings) trains near sociopathic behaviors in the name of “being powerful.”💔 Accountability and denial — why leaders and organizations avoid responsibility even as harm mounts.💬 The role of narrative — how meaning-making and moral frameworks can be twisted into manipulation.🌍 Healing and responsibility — finding your voice, telling your story, and reclaiming your moral compass after coercive systems.Anne and Brian speak candidly about their own complicity, recovery, and the emotional toll of leaving a world that promised more transformation than it would or even could deliver. In this follow-up conversation, Anne Peterson and former Landmark staff member Brian Arbor take an unflinching look at what happens when transformational ideals collide with organizational control.⚠️ Content Note: This episode includes discussion of psychological harm, trauma, and moral injury. Please listen with care and take breaks as needed.A longtime participant and staffer, Brian reflects on the promises and hidden costs of his years inside Landmark Worldwide — from the hope of “making a difference” to the trauma, moral injury, and identity loss that can come from total immersion in high-control environments. Together, Anne and Brian begin to explore the REM Model (Rationalization, Emotion & Morals) developed by Chris Shelton and how it illuminates the inner conflict many experience when “help” begins to harm. More on this in PART TWO of their conversation next week! This episode continues Confronting the Line’s mission to examine both sides — the light and the dark — of the self-help industry, revealing how good intentions can be weaponized and how healing begins with truth-telling.Part 1 of 2 — Part 2 drops soon.RESOURCES & LINKS: Check out Brian’s Traces of Trauma Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/pl/podcast/traces-of-trauma/id1827823981 Our previous episodes when Brian first speaks up about trauma and transformationE35 https://youtu.be/5gRwymEAzCs?si=3ellNVscfFRhBHS4E36 https://youtu.be/YAWyJKdfwzY?si=AqQUIl5o5zt0kbmn Get in contact with Anne or read her Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ MODERATION NOTE: While healthy debate and discussion regarding the topics being discussed is encouraged, personal (ad hominem) attacks on people, places or things will be deleted.

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Glenn Doyle, SEEK Safely Board President, and Jean Brown, manager and board member of SEEK, to discuss several upcoming events and programs we are launching in the coming months.SEEK Safely was born in response to the tragedy that took three people's lives, including Jean's sister Kirby Brown, due to an irresponsibly run pseudo sweat lodge. Almost 13 years later, the self-help and wellness industries continue to be among the most risky and unregulated spaces out there.Listen in as we discuss the launch of what we are calling the SEEK Safely movement. We'll cover the 'whys' and 'wherefores' of the upcoming programs and opportunities SEEK and iLumn8.Life are collaborating on. E49 Chris Shelton: The REM Model: Rationalization, Emotion & Morals in Cult Influence (and Recovery)

In Part 2 of Confronting the Line conversation with Chris Shelton he unveils his REM Model—a practical lens for understanding how we get pulled into (and out of) coercive systems. We map the three interacting layers that drive human behavior:** Rationalization: the stories we tell ourselves after we act** Emotion: moment-to-moment feelings and deeper unmet needs** Morals: our “how the world should be” compass that leaders can exploit for righteousness and outrageUsing parallels from Scientology and Landmark, we break down tactics like love bombing, awe-based promises, urgency, and integrity-as-weapon—then show how REM helps you spot compromises in real time and reconnect with your own values. What you’ll learn* The REM layers and how they interact in recruitment, commitment, and exit* Why “think later, act now” works—and how to interrupt it* How awe and moral certainty get weaponized (not just fear)* Practical self-checks: Which need is empty? Who benefits if I say yes? Am I crossing my moral lines?* Healthier paths forward: multidisciplinary support, critical thinking that includes emotions, and timing your decisions to let feelings settleIf this resonates, drop your questions and stories below—we’re shaping a workshop to help survivors, clinicians, and curious humans use REM in the real world.RESOURCES & LINKS: Check out Chrises Show/Podcast - YouTube Channel https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGrPM1Pg2h72ADIuv8eYmzrJ-ppLOlw_g&si=FTr1i8vbjEsqWKb8 Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/speaking-of-cults/id1030984057 Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources → https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ MODERATION NOTE: While healthy debate and discussion regarding the topics being discussed is encouraged, personal (ad hominem) attacks on people, places or things will be deleted. E48 Chris Shelton Pt.1 — From Scientology Survivor to the REM Model: Victimhood, Responsibility & Waking Up

In Part 1, Anne sits down with cult-education creator Chris Shelton to trace the lived experiences that shaped his forthcoming REM Model. Chris shares his journey growing up in Scientology, signing the Sea Org’s “billion-year” contract, and enduring systemic abuse, forced “volunteer” labor, and sleep deprivation—all rationalized in the name of a higher purpose. Together, Anne and Chris unpack the loaded word “victim,” why reclaiming it is essential for healing, and the uncomfortable but necessary truth that many who escape high-control groups must also face where they were pressured into victimizing others.Drawing clear parallels between Scientology and Landmark (unpaid/underpaid labor, weaponized “transformation,” and sales-driven promises that don’t match reality), they explore how moral dilemmas often spark the first crack in belief—and how the unraveling that follows can take years. Anne reflects on her own leadership history, the long-arc of recovery for staff and participants, and why multidisciplinary support (therapy, spiritual practice, trauma-informed care) outperforms any “one method fixes all” claim. This conversation lays the groundwork for Part 2, where Chris introduces the REM Model and shows how Rationalization, Emotion, and Moral reasoning interact to keep people in—or help them out of—coercive systems.RESOURCES & LINKS: Check out Chrises Show/Podcast - YouTube Channel https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGrPM1Pg2h72ADIuv8eYmzrJ-ppLOlw_g&si=FTr1i8vbjEsqWKb8  Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/speaking-of-cults/id1030984057 Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ MODERATION NOTE: While healthy debate and discussion regarding the topics being discussed is encouraged, personal (ad hominem) attacks on people, places or things will be deleted. FINALLY Please consider supporting this channel which helps us to offer more and better content and resources such as the healing group w/ Rachel.  Contributing also supports the learning and healing needs of folks, no matter their ability to pay, who are waking up to and leaving high demand and cult(ish) groups. E47 The Fine Line: Leadership, Power, and Transformation with Ed Gurowitz

Anne with author and transformational expert Ed Gurowitz dive into the fine line between empowerment and exploitation in personal development. Together they explore how transformational tools can be misused, why organizations drift into control and coercion, and what it takes to build safe, ethical spaces for real growth.Together they unpack the difference between authoritarian vs. collaborative decision-making, the dangers of mistaking “saving the world” for genuine purpose, and how organizations can fall into command-and-control structures rooted in outdated models of power. They also reflect candidly on their personal journeys—what was gained, what was lost, and what must be re-examined if we are to build safe, ethical spaces for transformation today. This episode is both a critique and an invitation: to question inherited practices, to discern the difference between authentic growth and exploitation, and to imagine more collaborative ways of leading and learning.Get Ed’s book AMAZON https://a.co/d/ePbp2tm or Bookshop Org  https://shorturl.at/GZlhITo be notified about any opportunities to work with Ed sign up for the iLumn8.Life Newsletter https://ilumn8.life/  click the get the Newsletter button in the upper right. Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/

E44 Confronting the Line between LOVE and LOVE BOMBING w/ Rachel Bernstein

In this nuanced and engaging conversation, Anne with therapist and cult expert Rachel Bernstein unpack the concept of love bombing, distinguishing it from genuine expressions of affection or appreciation. They define love bombing as a calculated tactic designed to fast-track loyalty, create dependency, and manipulate behavior by showering someone with praise, attention, or idealized visions of their potential—often to elicit compliance or service to a group or leader. Drawing from Anne’s personal experiences, they explore how compliments framed as empowerment can subtly condition participants to stay loyal and feel indebted, blurring the line between inspiration and coercion. They also discuss the psychological effects of vulnerability in group settings, the dangers of re-traumatization, and the importance of discerning between sincere support and strategic flattery with strings attached. Ultimately, the conversation emphasizes the need for awareness, boundaries, and emotional safety in transformational spaces.TAKEAWAYS: ** Love bombing is a manipulative tactic designed to create dependency.** Genuine affection is unconditional, while love bombing often comes with expectations.** Recognizing red flags in relationships can prevent emotional harm.** Self-perception can be heavily influenced by external validation.** Emotional vulnerability should be approached with caution in group settings.** Authenticity in sharing personal stories is crucial for healthy connections.** Safe spaces are essential for genuine emotional expression.** Navigating feelings requires a balance between expression and management.** Conditional love can lead to feelings of indebtedness and manipulation.** Understanding the dynamics of affection can empower individuals in relationships.RESOURCES & LINKS: If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-... Labor Day Special: Former Landmark Staff Speak Out on Exploitation & Abuse in the Name of ‘Transformation’

This Labor Day, Confronting the Line shines a light on the hidden labor behind “transformation.” Anne sits down with Tony, Jennifer, and Kyla—former Landmark Worldwide staff members from Los Angeles and Newport Beach—to share what it was really like to work inside one of the most well-known personal development organizations.Their stories expose the contradictions: long hours for minimal pay, relentless pressure to produce “results,” and environments where shaming and coercion were normalized—all while being told they were “changing the world.” Together, they unpack how the ideals of service and transformation were weaponized into exploitative employment practices that left lasting scars.⚠️ Content Note: Some of what is shared in this episode may be triggering or upsetting, particularly accounts of workplace abuse and suicidal thoughts. Please take breaks if you need to and care for yourself as you listen. You’ll also notice a lighter moment—Tony’s young son pops in from time to time as he plays in the background. Thanks to Tony’s earbuds, his son can’t hear the conversation, but you’ll see him appear occasionally on screen. This isn’t about rejecting growth or self-discovery—it’s about asking hard questions of the organizations that claim to provide it, and ensuring that people’s labor and humanity aren’t sacrificed in the process. E43 A Conversation with Rachel Bernstein: When Does Inquiry Become Indoctrination?

In this thoughtful and revealing dialogue, Anne Peterson and Rachel Bernstein, noted therapist, podcaster and cult education expert, delve into the mechanics of indoctrination, especially in the context of self-help and transformational organizations like Landmark. They explore how indoctrination is often disguised as personal growth, gradually replacing critical thinking with absolute beliefs through emotional manipulation, social pressure, and redefined language. Bernstein explains how coercive environments manufacture highs that override natural skepticism, while Peterson reflects on her own experience of accepting ideas under the guise of exploration. Together, they highlight red flags—such as urgency, specialized language, the erosion of independent thought, and the reframing of dissent as fear or resistance—and emphasize the importance of stepping back, trusting one's internal warning systems, and reclaiming personal autonomy.RESOURCES & LINKS: If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ Check out Rachel’s excellent Podcast for deeper understanding about what is healthy vs harmful when seeking growth https://www.podpage.com/indoctrination/ Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ MODERATION NOTE: While healthy debate and discussion regarding the topics being discussed is encouraged, personal (ad hominem) attacks on people, places or things will be deleted. FINALLY Please consider supporting this channel which helps us to offer more and better content and resources such as the healing group w/ Rachel.  Contributing also supports the learning and healing needs of folks, no matter their ability to pay, who are waking up to and leaving high demand and cult(ish) groups. In this candid conversation, Anne and guest Dave Booda explore the dynamics of ISTA, a school focused on sexuality and personal development, and the challenges faced by individuals within such organizations.Dave, a musician and retreat facilitator, describes how he helped create a volunteer group (3SC) to challenge harmful practices at ISTA—a prominent sexuality and spiritual training organization modeled partly on large group awareness trainings like EST. Together, they reflect on the difficulty of addressing systemic harm in these groups, the resistance leaders show to meaningful change, and the challenge of separating genuine transformational value from abusive practices. Dave details the mediated conversations they initiated, the joint statement they co-authored with ISTA leadership, and how even modest attempts to foster accountability triggered backlash from both critics and loyalists. We discussed how intense devotion to a charismatic leader OR ideology can subtly transform into devotion to an organization and “the work,” masking manipulation, abuse, and trauma under the guise of self-improvement and personal responsibility.Together, they examine broader questions about why society tolerates exploitation in such settings, the parallels between groups like Landmark and Scientology, and the urgent need to rethink what ethical, evidence-based, and truly beneficial personal development could look like.RESOURCES & LINKS: Check out Jon’s Show www.youtube.com/@jonatackfamilyfriends6176Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ MODERATION NOTE: While healthy debate and discussion regarding the topics being discussed is encouraged, personal (ad hominem) attacks on people, places or things will be reported. FINALLY Please consider supporting this channel which helps us to offer more and better content and resources such as the healing group w/ Rachel.  Contributing also supports the learning and healing needs of folks, no matter their ability to pay, who are waking up to and leaving high demand and cult(ish) groups. The dialogue emphasizes the need for a relational approach in both personal and organizational transformation, while also addressing the challenges and misconceptions that arise in the self-help and coaching industries. Some Takeaways ..Transformation methodologies have evolved since the EST era.Understanding the difference between technology and methodology is crucial.Responsibility should not be conflated with blame or guilt.Peak experiences can overshadow the ongoing practice of transformation.Coping mechanisms can become survival strategies that limit growth.Organizations are moving from transactional to relational models.Transformation is a lifelong practice, not a one-time event. The misuse of transformational concepts can lead to harm.Experience can easily turn into dogma if not critically examined. The future of transformation lies in collaborative and relational approaches.RESOURCES & LINKS: To get Ed’s book visit his author page →  https://tinyurl.com/yzb7xf76 Go through Ed’s book chapter by chapter with Ed and Anne and discuss the principles and their application → https://vc217.infusionsoft.com/app/orderForms/i8-EG-TPP Read Anne’s Book Is This A Cult: Confronting the Line Between Exploitation and Transformation and find other pods and resources →  https://isthisacultbook.com/ If you or someone you know is wrestling with recovery after being involved in a high-control group, relationship or any organization, check out the Healthy Healing and Recovery Group w/ Rachel Bernstein →  https://ilumn8.life/op/lgat-recovery-group/ MODERATION NOTE: While healthy debate and discussion regarding the topics being discussed is encouraged, personal (ad hominem) attacks on people, places or things will be deleted. FINALLY Please consider supporting this channel which helps us to offer more and better content and resources such as the healing group w/ Rachel.  Contributing also supports the learning and healing needs of folks, no matter their ability to pay, who are waking up to and leaving high demand and cult(ish) groups. E38 Misuse and abuse of good ideas in high control groups w/ coercive control expert Chris Shelton

In this episode, Anne and fellow deconstructionist Chris Shelton delve into the dynamics of high-control groups and gurus. They explore how language, choice, and context can play crucial roles in manipulation and personal experiences. They discuss the dangers of the distortions of everyday notions about choice, responsibility, and context that are often taught by self-development groups and gurus can and do play out. They address the importance of acknowledging victimhood, and the impact of social pressure on individual choices. They emphasize the need for critical examination of ideas and the interconnectedness of personal and collective experiences in the journey of healing and transformation.TAKEAWAYS: High control groups often use specific language to manipulate members. The concept of choice can be weaponized in high control environments.Distinctions in language can obscure the dangers of certain ideologies.Understanding manipulation requires examining both leaders and systems.Context is crucial in shaping our perceptions and experiences.Language can create a false sense of responsibility and choice.Personal experiences in high control groups can lead to complex feelings of empowerment and victimhood.Healing from trauma often requires acknowledging victimhood and systemic issues.Social pressure can significantly influence individual choices in group settings.Critical examination of ideas is essential for personal growth and understanding.ABOUT Chris Shelton, MSc, Coercive Control Expert, Show Host & Podcaster. Ed Gurowitz on The est 6 Day Course – What Can We Learn from the Past?

In this conversation, former est Trainer and early Forum leader, Ed Gurowitz Ph.D., shares insights about the 6 Day program, a unique transformational training experience that emphasized safety, integrity and going beyond personal limits. It is legendary in the Landmark/Werner Erhard circles. The discussion covers the program's history, structure, and the experiential learning processes involved. While we have found many stories about the dangers of the est training and the Forum, we have heard almost nothing but huge praise for the course known as the 6 Day. AND as we have heard about some terrible outcomes of these types of encounter programs in the modern era, such as James Arthur Ray and the Spiritual Warrior program in which 3 people lost their lives, I wondered what we could learn from the apparent success, including the safety record, of the 6 Day. Ed reflects on the importance of leadership in creating a safe environment for participants and the challenges of maintaining integrity in personal development. The conversation concludes with thoughts on transformation as a continuous practice and the need for community support. A bit about Ed … Ed Gurowitz, Ph.D. is a psychologist who has been on the leading edge of personal and organizational transformation for over 40 years. As a management consultant and leadership development specialist, he has worked with top executives all over the world on communication, collaboration, conflict resolution, and removing the barriers that keep people stuck in “good enough,” allowing them to emerge into their full greatness as leaders and as human beings. E14 Exploring the Notion of Weaponized Empathy with Chris Shelton

In this episode, we explore the concept of weaponized empathy. We look at how empathy can be manipulated and used as a tool for control with the end justifies the means argument and how this moral theme is common in high-control groups, cults or culty groups and extremist ideologies. And what about the weaponization of empathy in the context of misinformation and narcissism? Often these people then become true believers who go to extreme lengths to spread the group's message and defend it, often causing harm to themselves and others in the process. We discussed how to recognize and protect oneself from being taken advantage of by weaponized empaths who mean well. In this part of the conversation, Chris discusses the process of deprogramming and deconstructing cult mindsets. He emphasizes the importance of physical safety, resources, and a support network in the early stages of leaving a cult. He also highlights the need for post-cult education and self-work to undo the indoctrination and build resilience. E13 Recognizing Signs of Indoctrination w/ Guest Gerette Buglion

Meet Gerette Buglion, author and educator. In this conversation we delve into the complexities of public discourse, cultural homogeneity, personal insights, and the dynamics of language and communication. We reflect on our similar experiences having spent years involved in different high-control groups and the importance of critical thinking in program design, while also exploring themes of personal growth and identity. We took a look at some of the common terms being used a lot these days when discussing exploitation and abuse .. specifically we discuss what is and is not meant by Large Group Awareness Training (LGAT) and Indoctrination. We look forward to having Gerette back to discuss more terms in the future! About Gerette Buglion: Born a middle child of seven, it’s not surprising Gerette Buglion became a lifelong educator. From parent-child programs, to Special Ed and Primary School, she’s played many teacherly roles. She has found her sweet spot as a cult recovery educator and facilitator of her signature Writing to Reckon classes that support survivors to create coherent narratives out of the chaos of coercive control. Her memoir An Everyday Cult details her master’s-level training in undue influence. E12 Squirrels and other connections between Scientology and Landmark with guest Chris Shelton

Chris Shelton MSc, Scientology survivor and coercive control expert joined us as guest this week. We had fun exploring the similarities between Scientology and Landmark Worldwide, two organizations that are known for their controversial practices and being accused of cult-like behavior. Similarities such as the cult-ish personalities around the founders, L. Ron Hubbard and Werner Erhard, and the lack of accountability of such leaders. We also talked about the tactics used like emotional manipulation, the suppression of questioning, the power of social proof and the manipulation of beliefs. PLUS the influence of other cult leaders on Landmark and Scientology is undeniable. We compared the practices and beliefs of Landmark and Scientology. Landmark focuses on transformative learning and removing barriers to self-expression, while Scientology believes in the spiritual nature of humans and aims to remove past life trauma. Anything for a tax write off?! The goal of Landmark is to “transform the being of human being” and Scientology is to “clear” the planet. What’s the difference? Still searching. We discovered more similarities, such as the concept of recreation where individuals are trained to fully understand and duplicate another person's communication and the control mechanisms used in communication exercises in general. Well, Werner does acknowledge L. Ron in his authorized biography. Chris didn’t have any first hand knowledge of the supposed Scientology conspiracy to discredit Werner, beyond his being labeled a squirrel 🐿of course. He did give us some insider history of Scientology's infiltration operations into the IRS and political organizations for the purpose of influencing on a larger scale. Finally the conversation concludes with a discussion on the importance of recognizing and educating ourselves about manipulative tactics in order to protect our autonomy and rights.
