Eben Alexander and the Proof of Heaven
Eben Alexander’s story is unique among the annals of near-death experiences. As a practicing neurosurgeon, Eben was trained within the “body as machine” paradigm of scientific materialism. In this paradigm, everything in the physical world, including the body, can be reduced to mindless particles obeying the impersonal laws of nature.  Life has no meaning or purpose, God is dead and heaven is a figment of the imagination. This thing we call consciousness – the awareness of being here – arises from brain neurons and is nothing special.  In 2008, Eben contacted a rare case of meningitis and entered a deep, week-long coma, bringing him close to death.  During this near-death experience he entered a “super-real,” heaven-like world that he vividly recounts in his best-selling book, Proof of Heaven.  This experience brought upon an abrupt change in his worldview, as he now understood that scientific materialism could not explain what he went through; instead, a united consciousness must underly the world, not mindless particles of materialism.  Listen in as Philip and Eben discuss this amazing near-death experience and what it means for reaching a better understanding of the world we live in.  Check out our video here! https://youtu.be/DmW9v_sXLYY

John Dee, Scientist, and Medium of Angels
Although today science and angels stand on opposite ends of the credibility spectrum, this was not always the case. In the 16th Century, Dr. John Dee, court advisor and astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I, was considered the foremost scientific genius of his age. He helped lay the foundation for modern science and made pioneering advances in navigation and optics. His theoretical work extended to the concept of light speed and he made prototypes for telescopes and solar panels. He is also credited with inventing the concept of the "British Empire." But showing how the distance between science and the occult was much closer 500 years ago, he spent the last half of his life developing a way to contact angels.Yes, angels. In this new book, John Dee and the Empire of Angels (https://www.amazon.com/John-Dee-Empire-Angels-Enochian/dp/1620555891/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1535505692&sr=8-1&keywords=john+dee+and+the+empire+of+angels), this week's guest, Jason Louv, gives an engrossing account of the life of John Dee, while offering parallels and contrasts with our modern worldview. At the end, an intriguing question is raised: with the increasing evidence for near-death experiences, mediums, and parapsychology, and the often incredible theories of modern cosmology (see the multiverse, dark matter, and the inflationary Big Bang), are we entering a new age where the distance between science and the occult will grow closer? Is this good?Listen in as Philip and Jason explore this and other intriguing topics.

Imagining the World
Each of us is free to interpret the physical world however we want. At some point, experience and reason show one interpretation to be better than another. (This may be called the scientific method.) Then, that interpretation gains adherents, builds support, and dominates. But few play the long game, or wait for the disfavored interpretation to work itself through modern culture. This week's guest, Kate Jegede, author of the mind-opening new book, Infinite Possibility, is one of them. To Kate, God is the human imagination and we can therefore create our world, change our lives, and even affect the past. Where books like The Secret suggest a connection between intention and the physical world, Infinite Possibility makes this connection a scientific truth. She writes: "God is not man. God actually became man, so that man can reawaken as God." This possibly radical position may seem familiar, for it is echoed in Eastern philosophy and underlies much of what we call the "new age." So listen in as Philip and Kate discuss this new interpretation which is in fact an old interpretation that we have somehow forgotten.

Jeffrey Kripal: Author of the Impossible
What if someone studied the paranormal not as fringe events or untrustworthy occurrences but instead as providing insight into the sacred? What if someone dispensed with the notions of "real" and "unreal," "natural" and "supernatural," and instead viewed all human experiences as providing keys to understanding the world we inhabit? This is how this week's guest, Professor Jeffrey Kripal of Rice University, thinks and writes. His books and thought push the envelope of understanding and seek to broaden our worldview by treating what we call the "paranormal" as part of the fabric of reality. His books, from Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred to Secret Body: Erotic and Esoteric Currents in the History of Religion, show an original and engaging mind at work. Join us as Philip talks with the real Author of the Impossible.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Dream-Weaving While Young
Over 200,000 books on Amazon have "dream" in the title. And there is something about dreams that have always captivated the mind. How many times do we read about athletes, artists, lovers, and the person on street talk about how their dreams have come true? We "live the dream;" and at times, it all feels like a dream. The dream permeates culture from music (e.g., the Dream Weaver, Dream On) and movies (e.g., Inception), to car commercials (Honda Civic) and virtually everything else. Unfortunately, most of our lives are spent in a culture that marginalizes the dream; we are limited mortal creatures; machines destined to rust away and die. Dreams are fantasies. Do not bother. But this week's guest, Brent Feinberg, has an idea. In this new book, Freeing Freddie - The Dream Weaver, he weaves a simple tale for kids of all ages. The story is simple: start believing in the dream when young, and never give up the quest.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – A New on the Evolution and Purpose of Life
The standard interpretation of the meaning and purpose of life is that we are mortal creatures who have evolved from bacteria through the mindless, directionless process of Darwinian evolution. According to Darwin's leading modern-day advocate, Richard Dawkins, we are "survival machines – robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes." The standard interpretation carries the day and is accepted by almost all orthodox biologists. But this fact does not mean the interpretation is true. One way to find out is to compare it to other perspectives, many of which may seem radical and "out-there." On this show, Philip interviews one of the world's most original thinkers and best-selling author, Tim Freke, about his new book, Soul Story: Evolution and the Purpose of Life (https://www.amazon.com/Soul-Story-Evolution-Purpose-Life/dp/1780289847). To Tim Freke, Darwin's theory, if not wrong, is incomplete: evolution does not stop with the physical body, but continues to the realization that we are an emerging spiritual being in a never-ending process of creativity. So you may just go along with Darwin and move on; or you might consider a different, and more uplifting perspective. Listen in as Philip and Tim discuss what Tim calls the new worldview of "emergent spirituality."

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Visions and the Independent World
Visions have a better chance of coming true if they are in fact connected to the outer world; if the make-up of visions have something in common with the make-up of the physical world. Almost 100 years scientists discovered, through theory and experiment, that the outer, physical world, consists not of things but of waves and energy packets. These things that we thought made up an independent world in fact don't exist (https://www.scientificamerican.com/media/pdf/197911_0158.pdf), and thus neither does the independent world. This means that indeed, when we have a vision we are not in fact pounding our heads against a wall, but instead entering data of some kind into the story line for the physical world. In different words, we write the story of our lives and the future of the world. The problem, however, is that the deep truth of quantum theory has still not penetrated the mindscape of the modern world.

Conversations Beyond Science And Religion – The Internally Generated World
The consequences of quantum theory, even after a century, have still not permeated our consciousness, or the very field that discovered it: physics. Professor Richard Conn Henry, a guest on my show in 2014, observed in an article that he published in Nature Magazine, entitled, The Mental Universe, that the world we live in consists not of things, only observations. But what does this mean? One answer is that we are observing ourselves in the midst of an internally-generated world.

Conversations Beyond Science And Religion – Sir James Jean & Max Planck
The world needs a vision and for a vision we will need a Mind. As the physicist, Sir James Jeans, said almost a century ago, "today there is a wide measure of agreement, which on the physical side of science approaches almost to unanimity, that the stream of knowledge is heading towards a non-mechanical reality; the universe begins to look more like a great thought than a great machine." And then, as Max Planck, the founder of quantum theory, said, "mind is the matrix of all reality." Quantum theory shows the physical world is made not of things, but of mind-stuff. So the problem is that we are at essence a Mind, and the goal becomes to understand and accept this fact and then with this knowledge, dream bigger.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Cosmic Hologram
Holograms have always bedazzled the mind. First invented in 1947 (http://www.holography.ru/histeng.htm), holograms are man-made mirages, formed by mirrors and lasers, that mimic the appearance of physical reality. In the late 20th century, cosmologists began using the holographic model as a metaphor to explain the universe. Under this view, the fundamental stuff of the cosmos is not matter but information; information that somehow expresses itself in the form of the physical world. (https://www.scientificamerican.com/video/is-our-universe-a-hologram-video/) In her new book, Cosmic Hologram: In-formation at the Center of Creation, (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JM2XGKW/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1) this week's guest, Jude Currivan, goes farther: might the hologram model be the one that unites science with spirituality? Listen in as Philip and Jude explore this and all sorts of other mind-opening topics.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Doubt and Flow
Standing between us and flow is doubt; doubt is the thing that makes us stop and question our decisions; that makes us second-guess ourselves. If we can manage doubt, we can truly ride our decisions with an open mind. But the question is how to do this. In her new book, Undoubtedly Awesome: Your Own Personal Roadmap From Doubt to Flow (https://www.amazon.com/Undoubtedly-Awesome-personal-roadmap-doubt/dp/0692823883), this week's guest, Anne Tucker, provides a "how-to" manual on re-directing the energy wasted on doubt toward having a more fulfilling, confident life. By explaining how we make decisions, she is able to help us stay committed to ones we make. This is not just another "positive thinking" book; this one is simple, original, and the method works. Listen in as Philip and Anne discuss how to eliminate doubt, step-by-step, from the way we approach decision-making.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Transcending Darwin and Creationism
Evolution is the leading theory of biology, if not of science. The problem is that few people understand how evolution actually works. According to the orthodox Darwinian model, evolution works through the natural selection of favorable, random mutations. Those who have a hard time accepting the notion that mindless mutations can create the wonders of the living world often adopt the opposing view, creationism, which holds that, in the end, only the God of the Bible can explain the miracle of life. In his new book, Evolution 2.0 - Breaking the Deadlock Between Darwin and Design, this week's guest Perry Marshall applies the mind of an electrical engineer to the problem and comes to an original and startling conclusion: the source of life, the DNA molecule, is in fact a digital code; a mathematical language no different from those than run our computers. We know that only intelligent beings (i.e., humans) write computer codes and that errors in the transmission of the codes, also known as noise, destroys the message; compounding noise does not create a work of art, a new computer model, or for that matter, a new species. Random mutations, even if they exist, cannot be the source of order. An intelligence must be behind evolution. Listen in as Philip and Perry Marshall tackle this perennial issue in a forceful and original discussion.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Cosmosapiens
One difference between science and religion is that science takes nothing on faith; science, we are taught, is the open-ended, self-critical pursuit of truth. Meanwhile, religion relies upon revelation and faith to find truths that cannot be questioned because God delivered them. Science questions; religion relies upon unquestionable answers. But a few writers are now directing the turrets of critical examination against the theories of science, and finding that modern science, in too many ways, resembles not an enterprise devoted to finding truth, but a belief system. In his best-selling book, Cosmosapiens: Human Evolution from the Origin of the Universe, this week's guest, John Hands, sets out on an old-age quest to answer the big questions: who are we? and why are we here? Along the way he discovers, through a rigorous and peer-reviewed analysis, that orthodox science has lost its way and can no longer be relied upon to deliver the unadulterated truth. This is one of my best shows and I thank John Hands for not only writing the book, but for having what I hope the listener will find to be a mind-opening conversation.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – The Spark, the Flame, and the Torch
By all accounts we are entering a time of breakthroughs and paradigm shifts. And these changes are not just occurring in science, but in what it means to be a leader as well. This week's guest, Lance Secretan, is a pioneer in establishing a deeper and more self-sustaining method of inspiring people and organizations. He teaches that our world leadership -- politics, business, health care, education, and religion -- is failing because it is driven not by a common dream but by individual metrics. The existing paradigm measures progress in terms of material wealth, not spiritual or human fulfillment. In this new book, The Spark, the Flame, and the Torch (https://www.amazon.com/Spark-Flame-Torch-Inspire-Others/dp/0986565407), Lance brings together 35 years of experience and theory to create a new paradigm for achieving true inspiration as a person and a leader. Join Philip as he engages Lance in a wide-open discussion on why focusing on the One Dream is the key to pointing organizations, businesses, governments and even the global community, toward higher performance.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Procrustean Science
In Greek mythology, Procrustes was a robber who forced travelers to lie down in a bed and then made them fit by stretching or shortening their limbs. (Procrustes eventually suffered the same fate at the hands of Theseus). In Thomas Kuhn's seminal work, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, the author writes that scientific revolutions become necessary when the facts encountered through experience no longer fit the governing scientific paradigm. At some point, the mounting pile of contradictory facts can no longer be explained away, and the old model topples. Today, in science, we are witnessing a similar phenomenon: the evidence, and the credibility of the sources, continues to build against the materialistic paradigm. But like old Procrustes, modern science continues to force the facts to fit the theory, imagining new particles, new forces, and ever more worlds to explain the features of our universe. The book, Science, Consciousness & Ultimate Reality, edited by this week's guest, David Lorimer (http://davidlorimer.blogspot.com/), contains 11 articles by prominent thinkers all pointed in the same direction: consciousness, not mind, must be fundamental to the workings of the universe. At some point, science will be unable to ignore the facts, and it too will change.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Notes from Heaven
Science has always looked for the harmonies in nature, as most poetically shown in Kepler's "harmony of the spheres," mathematical rules that still govern the movement of heavenly bodies. Music and harmony permeate our culture, forming an enriching and ever-evolving soundtrack to life. The rock group The Who sings about "getting in tune with the straight and the narrow," new age authors talk about getting in tune with our true selves; there is something about getting in tune, staying with the harmony, that brings us to a different level. In her new book, The Note from Heaven: How to Sing Yourself to Higher Consciousness, this week's guest, Githa Ben-David, connects music with the soul and then with the cosmos at large. In this special show, Githa now only talks about the note from heaven, but also provides a live demonstration. Tune in.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Spooky Action at a Distance
One of the most peculiar features of our modern scientific worldview is that forces act across distances, at times faster than the speed of light. This simple sentence violates two rock-solid underpinnings to the scientific worldview: first, the notion that nothing exists but particles in motion, and second, that nothing moves faster than the speed of light. Take gravity: what exactly holds planets in their orbits around the sun, the solar system in its orbit within the Milky Way, and the galaxies in their orbits around each other? How does this force act across distances to attract other bodies? With the horizon problem, scientists ponder how regions of space at opposite ends of the universe remain in virtual thermal equilibrium, even though no known mechanism, including light itself, could have caused the two separated regions to communicate. In his new book, Spooky Action at a Distance, this week's guest, George Musser, contributing editor for Scientific American magazine, presents an absorbing and thought-provoking examination of scientific phenomena that drives toward only one conclusion: underneath the physical world of separate objects there might well be some underlying reality connecting thing together. Listen in as Philip and George Musser explore a topic that is just now getting the attention it deserves.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Radical Awakening
It is now evident that if there will be an awakening -- a true enlightenment -- it will be a radical one. The concept of "awakening" permeates the world's religious and spiritual literature. We awaken to a new day; a new dawn; a new self; shed material entrapments; and rise above it all. In each instance, we are ridding ourselves of something that limits us and releasing something inside, to venture outward. In her new book, Radical Awakening: Discovering the Radiance of Being in the Midst of Everyday Life, this week's guest, Amoda Maa, gives an original and vibrant perspective on this age-old concept of awakening. As she writes, "become part of a revolution in consciousness that has the power to change your life, and our wider world." Listen in as Philip and Amoda explore what it means to awaken in the real world; in our daily lives; now.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – IGod
God is a concept we place on the shelf like an old book and let it sit there. The book contains what everyone else -- priests, rabbis, scientists, parents, and the media -- have told us about God. But what do you think? The new movie, IGod, co-produced by this week's guest, Bob Friedman (along with his son Jonathon Friedman and none other than Neale Donald Walsch, the author of the best-selling Conversations with God series originally published by Bob Friedman) takes a down-to-earth and candid approach to what God is. Containing interviews with everyone from the person on the street to the leading thinkers in the new-age movement, Deepak Chopra, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Marianne Williamson, Gregg Braden, Amit Goswami, and Neale Donald Walsch, to rabbis, priests, Baptist ministers, Zen Buddhists and many others, the movie gives a multitude of perspectives on God, while not advocating any of them. By showing the full range of viewpoints, it not only allows the viewer to decide what feels and sounds right to them but, in the end, suggests that our connection to God may be closer than traditional religions teach.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – The Lost Teachings of the Cathars
What we commonly call "religion" is in many ways simply the most popular interpretation of historical texts and words attributed to past spiritual leaders. Religious beliefs, such as the notion that Jesus Christ "died for our sins," become part of an interpretive system for approaching phenomena that lie beyond the physical world. For better or worse, as the popular beliefs take hold, they can become dogmatic and considered true beyond question. Woven into the spiritual fabric of history, however, are also a number of esoteric religions that took a different view of the Bible and humankind's place in the cosmos. But too often we hear about these different belief systems not because of their teachings but because of the violence done to their followers. On this show, Philip talks with Andrew Phillip Smith, the author of the brand new book, The Lost Teachings of the Cathars (http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Teachings-Cathars-Beliefs-Practices/dp/1780287151). They discuss not only the violent suppression of the Cathars but also their unique and fascinating beliefs, which until now have almost been lost to history.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Mark Anthony: Evidence of Eternity
Law and science are both based upon evidence: you can only prove a case in law if you have credible and probative evidence to support your side of the story. In the same way, a scientific theory rises or falls based upon the degree of evidence — and repeatable tests — supporting it. Interestingly, the evidence continues to mount that a spiritual world, residing in another dimension, another plane, or in some other way, really does exist. The evidence comes from numerous accounts from those who have connected with loved ones who have passed on, and who convey messages and facts that cannot be known unless the communication really occurred. Foremost among those who have the gift of engaging in these inter-dimensional communications is this week’s guest, Psychic Lawyer, Mark Anthony, author of the new best-selling book, Evidence of Eternity:Communicating with Spirits for Proof of the Afterlife. Listen in as two lawyers discuss the scientific — and indisputable — evidence showing that this other world is real, and what it might mean for all of us.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – The Evolution of Innovation
According to Jared Diamond, “evolution is the most profound and powerful idea to have been conceived in the last two centuries.” Almost all biologists no longer consider evolution "just a theory;" rather, it's a fact. The textbooks say that evolution is the selection and preservation of favorable mutations across generations. Genes mix and match, and the more successful at surviving -- survive and pass on the winning genes to their offspring. But how does innovation occur? How do new life forms arise from old ones? This is the mystery discussed on this show with Andreas Wagner, the author of the new and original book, Arrival of the Fittest: Solving Evolution’s Greatest Puzzle (http://www.amazon.com/Arrival-Fittest-Solving-Evolutions-Greatest/dp/1591846463).

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – The Genie in Your Genes
Quantum physics talks -- at times esoterically -- about the connection between consciousness and the outside world. There are no particles "out there;" only probabilities; wave equations; and bits of nothing. Does the mind choose reality, or create reality? In physics, we tend to consider this topic abstractly, distancing ourselves from the subject matter, which at times seems academic; after all, everyone knows the world is real, right? But when we bring the human body into the equation, we come to understand that, indeed, there is an unbreakable connection between mind and body. From the placebo effect to energy healing and epigenetics, the truth of quantum theory is right in front of us: the mind does affect the particle --the genes -- of the body. In his book The Genie in Your Genes (http://www.genieinyourgenes.com/), this week's guest, Dawson Church takes the reader on an enlightening cruise through the field of epigenetics, and shows that true healing begins with the genie inside of us.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – Kingsley Dennis: The Phoenix Generation
We are accustomed to encountering the concept of evolution in the biological sense, but it is growing increasingly evident that consciousness also evolves across generations. If so, then at some point a generation will arise that, in the words of this week’s guest, Kingsley Dennis, will “be born as change” not “into change.” This new generation will not face the current dichotomy of science and religion but will start at a place where no such antagonism exists. This will be what Kingsley calls The Phoenix Generation (http://www.amazon.com/The-Phoenix-Generation-Connection-Consciousness/dp/1780287925). Listen in as Philip and Kingsley discuss the new form of consciousness that is unfolding as part of our true nature.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – The Logical Path to Spirituality
We are taught that one reaches spiritual truths through revelation, meditation, the contemplation of the divine, and soul-raising experiences. Logic, on the other hand, involves rigorous, step-by-step thinking. Right brain vs. left brain. Reason vs. emotion. Logic is for science, not for spirituality. But might there be a logical path to spirituality? Is there a way to use reason to discover the old truths of spirituality, perhaps even the notion that we are One? On this ground-breaking show, Philip, using themes from this book, The Collapse of Materialism: Visions of Science, Dreams of God, discusses how logic can in fact lead us to a spiritual world.

Conversations Beyond Science and Religion – A Buddha Pill?
It seems that everyone, from Oprah Winfrey to Robert Murdoch to Sam Harris, is getting on the meditation bandwagon. Amazon lists thousands of books on meditation, each one offering another method to connect with the Inner Self, or describing profound experiences and revelations produced through meditation. But is meditation all that it cracks up to be? Is it really the panacea for all that ails the human soul? This week's guest, Dr. Miquel Farias, along with co-author, Catherine Wikholm, has written a new book, The Buddha Pill: Can Meditation Change You?, that takes an objective and scientific look at the reality of meditation. Yes, meditation is a soulful and meaningful activity that can instill a sense of the spiritual but, the authors conclude, it also has dark side, and at times may not always deliver the results anticipated. Listen in as Philip and Dr. Farias explore a different take on meditation.
