154: My huge FAIL of 2025 (and how it'll help YOU get over your fear of failure)

Failure isn't the end! It’s a -requirement- for success. But no one taught us that in school, right? Most people don’t quit because they fail once…They quit because they decide that failure means something is wrong with them.In this episode, I’m breaking down why failure is essential to building a thriving creative business, and how learning to fail correctly is what separates people who succeed from people who stay stuck. You’ll hear:(1:30) The fear one of my students had before joining my business course... and how she landed her first paid calligraphy job within weeks(3:05) Why school conditioned us to see failure as a stop sign instead of feedback(5:30) The truth about my journey: two failed businesses before building Crooked Calligraphy(7:50) A business mentee who believed she was a failure because her last business didn’t work — and how we reframed it as a “starter” business(11:00) The story of my most painful launch: weeks of prep, nearly 1,000 people, and only ONE sale(13:15) How that failure led to a $30K+ launch just weeks laterHere’s the key takeaway:👉 You go through failures. You are NOT a failure.Failure is only scary when you let it define you instead of teach you.If you’ve ever thought:-- “What if I try and still fail?”-- “Maybe I’m just not cut out for this”-- “I don’t trust myself to start again”This episode is for you.✨ And if you’re ready to stop letting failure hold you back, I’m opening a new challenge in January designed to help you build momentum, confidence, and clarity — even if you’ve failed before.Stay tuned. 153: Reddit called me trash... and I’m still here (how I got over my fear of criticism)

Have you ever been too afraid to put yourself out there for fear of what people might say? Yeah…me too. Especially when I searched my own business on Reddit and found a thread calling me a snake (Word of advice -  DON’T do what I did, unless you have thick skin)....In this episode of Creative Business Real Talk, I’m getting honest about the fear of criticism, how it’s shown up in my journey from lawyer to calligrapher, and the three powerful mindset shifts that changed everything.Inside this episode:(1:42) “Don’t take criticism from someone whose life you don’t want.” - why ‘doing something brave with your life’ holds more value than the opinion of bystanders(4:14) “Are you going to let two minutes of gossip stop you from living your life?” - how to “zoom out” and be grounded in the decisions you make for YOUR life(7:43) “Criticism says more about the person criticizing than the one being criticized” - why pointing the finger at someone, only results in 4 pointing back at yourself(14:27) The most important thing I’ve gained from my entrepreneurial journeyWhether it’s strangers online or well-meaning family members, criticism is part of the deal when you’re doing something brave. But here’s what I’ve learned after 10+ years building Crooked Calligraphy: what people say about you says more about them than it does about you. This episode is for any creative or entrepreneur who’s ever held back because of fear—especially the fear of being misunderstood, judged, or torn down.🎧 Listen now to get grounded in your worth, filter out the noise, and move forward with courage.FREE WORKSHOP:“How to Become a Calligraphy Pro” Educational WorkshopFOLLOW SHINAH: Join our community of creativity-seeking souls over on Instagram:  @crookedcalligraphySUBSCRIBE:Love podcasts? 151: Will AI Replace Calligraphers?

Is AI about to put calligraphers out of business? I put it to the test…and what I found might surprise you.In this episode of Creative Business Real Talk, I share my honest reaction after testing a “calligraphy generator” inside ChatGPT, and why it shook me… initially. I have a lot of students who send me questions about AI replacing calligraphy jobs,, and the question I hear constantly is, “Is it even worth starting a calligraphy business now?”. Join me as I discuss the future of calligraphy, why staying present is the name of the game, and share with you the perspective of someone who’s been in the industry wayyyy longer than I have (like 35 years longer...).Inside this episode:(1:30) “Calligraphy is doomed!”... A brief history - A look back at how text has continuously evolved - from printing presses, to Procreate, to live brand activations(4:17) Certainty is an illusion. Calligraphy services evolve - The dangerous myth of “certainty”, why it's impossible to achieve, and how flexibility can benefit you immensely(9:21) The questions you should be asking yourself instead - Why you need to live in the present, not the distant future(15:23) The Calligraphy AI generator - the good, the bad, and how to manage the unknownIf you’re thinking about getting into calligraphy in an increasingly AI-dominated world, this episode is your reminder: tools evolve -  but human connection and authenticity never go out of style.🎧 Tune in to hear why flexibility, focus, and presence are the keys to thriving - always.FREE WORKSHOP:“How to Become a Calligraphy Pro” Educational WorkshopFOLLOW SHINAH: Join our community of creativity-seeking souls over on Instagram:  @crookedcalligraphySUBSCRIBE:Love podcasts? 143: Your Counterintuitive Next Step Towards Pro Calligrapher

Rome wasn’t built in a day – and neither was any (decent) business. It was built over thousands of tiny micro-decisions, leading to compounding effects that eventually became BIG. Gorgeous buildings, architecture that has inspired masses, and historical significance spanning centuries.Likewise, when you’re establishing a business, you can’t just completely quit your job and start turning a profit if you haven’t already laid the groundwork. You have to consciously choose to show up every day and make those little movements that, over time, will set you up to take those big leaps of faith. In this episode of “The Shinah Show”, I’m breaking down the real path to becoming a professional calligrapher – and I can assure you, it’s not glamorous, it’s not linear, and it’s not BIG and dramatic. 138: Deciding When To Take The Leap (When To Leave Your Job)

One of the biggest and scariest questions I get from those around me is, “How did you know when it was time to leave? How did you choose the unknown over security?” Ooof, that’s a tough one. If you aren’t familiar with my story, about 10 years ago I was an unhappy, overtired, pent up corporate lawyer who had reached the end of my rope and decided I needed to make a change. I quit my 6-figure salary job, with no contingency plan in place. Luckily, I found calligraphy after a few months of stumbling through creative professions, which completely changed the trajectory of my life.People are so often in jobs that leave them burnt out and unfulfilled. They want to live the life they WANT to live – but fear getting out of the stable, safe 9-5 corporate job life they feel like they NEED to live. The way I see it, there are 2 paths. You either need to stay in the job you are in – but make the changes necessary to stifle the burnout, or leave – even if you don’t feel ready, to pursue your passions. In this episode of The Shinah Show, I share the top things to consider when you’re looking to make a change, including:🔑 Why you are the security—not your job🌱 Why we’re so afraid to lose what we have (when we could really be happy with much less)🌟 Remembering that safety and security are a myth, both in jobs and life💪 How one simple skill can give you the confidence you might need to take the leapLet this be your reminder to make decisions not only from fear, but from hope for the future as well – because nothing is ever promised.FREE WORKSHOP:“How to Become a Calligraphy Pro” Educational WorkshopFOLLOW SHINAH: Join our community of creativity-seeking souls over on Instagram:  @crookedcalligraphySUBSCRIBE:Love podcasts? We’ll dive into:Where these *illusive* clients are (*hint* tapping into your network and past clientele (yes, again!) is ALWAYS a good idea)Why local businesses are sometimes more apt to work with someone from the community who can create authentic experiencesWhat the “Perfect Pitch Formula”  is & how to use it to sell to potential customers without feeling sleazyWhy sprinkling seeds everywhere (even in the places you wouldn’t normally think of) is the best strategy for growthIf you’re ready to stop chasing and start growing your client list, this episode is especially for you!And if you want to expand your skillset to attract a wider client base, the Crooked Calligraphy Advanced Skills Studio is now open! 133: A "Right Now" Personal Update

It’s been 10 years since I started Crooked Calligraphy – and I’m finally where my 2015 self always dreamed I’d be. I have a steady $200K a year business, 3-day workweek, and I’m more at peace than I ever have been. But the truth is, that peace has come from a lot of resilience, faith in myself, and ability to ride the waves (and it’s been *quite* a ride). And there are still times I have doubts and have to sit in uncomfortable situations – but at least I get to do it on my own terms.Join me this episode as I share:The hard truths about owning a business, and why even if it’s your “passion” it’s not always going to bring you “joy”Why its necessary to give yourself time to settle in and calm the nervesThe importance of your business not being your everything, and learning what your “enough” numberHow after even 10 years, things can still be unpredictable – and that’s okIt’s important to realize that starting a business won’t solve all your problems or make them go away. Rather, it will allow you to look at your problems more truthfully and take the responsibility upon yourself to try and solve them (and no one else). And if you’re wanting to take the leap and see where calligraphy can take you, I’m hosting 2 free live trainings March 25th & 26th, 2025 on Confident Calligraphy Style that will teach you how to create a standout style and land big corporate clients. 132: Calligraphy Biz In Korea (With Lisa MacIntyre)

What if you wanted to start a calligraphy business… but you lived in the “wrong” place? Like a country where nobody speaks English (the one and only language you speak)??That’s exactly what happened to Lisa MacIntyre, who has lived in a small town in Korea for the past 20 years. She found our MC201 course and, despite not being able to find ANY supplies, pursued her dream of learning calligraphy & creating her own unique style (wait until you hear about the tool her husband made out of a paintbrush and a pineapple can 🤯).In this episode of The Shinah Show, Lisa shares how she turned her lifelong curiosity about calligraphy into a real, paying business — even in a “suboptimal” location. From getting paid commissions to landing a feature in a national Korean newspaper, Lisa’s story proves how passion and creativity can truly fuel your dreams. Plus, she’s using her calligraphy skills to inspire ESL students and bring beautiful lettering into local festivals and classrooms in her small Korean town.Join me as Lisa and I discuss:Why a lack of “ideal” circumstances shouldn’t hold you back from what you really want to doHow to incorporate calligraphy into niches where it’s never existedLisa’s real motivation behind her creativity & learning a new skillset (and its NOT money!)If you’ve ever doubted your abilities or blamed your circumstances for not going after your dreams, this episode is for you!And if you're ready to pursue your own unique calligraphy style, our Modern Calligraphy 201 course opens for enrollment March 25th, 2025! 131: Digital Calligraphy Essentials (Vectorizing, Revenue Streams & Pricing)

When a single corporate client paid me over $10K for one project — and $6K of that was digital calligraphy — I knew I had to pull back the curtain on this game-changing skill! While I would describe myself as a pen-and-paper calligrapher, digitized calligraphy has become a necessary add-on to most of my commissions. Of course, most of my clients initially contact me seeking handmade original pieces – but whether they want to duplicate my work numerous times, use it on their website for branding, or frankly I myself don’t want to write the SAME PHRASE thousands of times, I need to be able to generate a digitized version of my work (and save SO MUCH TIME in the process!).So how do I go about doing that? Good question! In this episode of The Shinah Show, I’m breaking down:The “tech side” of calligraphy, how to digitize your work, and what tools you need to do itThe vast number of projects you can create with digital calligraphy (and how it can open up soooo many more revenue streams for you)How I’ve priced my digital work over the years, and what key factors should dictate what you charge for your workIf you have ever wondered if learning how to digitize your calligraphy is worth adding to your skillset, I hope this episode will show you how many doors this talent will open for you!Interested in learning how to add style to your calligraphy and capture corporate clients? 130: "No Ones Buying My Calligraphy!" (What To Do Instead Of Giving Up)

You’ve FINALLY booked a spot at your local craft fair to sell your calligraphy. You pay the deposit, create your inventory, follow all the tips to set up the *perfect* booth, and… *crickets*. 🦗Hundreds of people walk by, only TWO stop to peruse—and suddenly your brain goes, “This will NEVER work. I’m not cut out for this. No one’s interested in calligraphy!”Sound familiar?Yep, we’ve all been there. It’s called “catastrophizing” – in other words, you’re jumping to the worst possible conclusion. And this is EXACTLY what one of my students, who this exact scenario happened to, did. She emailed me wondering how she could be doing all the RIGHT things and getting NO results. So, what advice did I offer her? I asked her, “What if it’s not you, but rather the result of factors beyond your control?”. While you can be doing ALL the things, sometimes the cards just aren’t in your favor; you’re in the wrong place, at the wrong time – and that sucks. But it’s no reason to give up!On this episode of The Shinah Show, I’m sharing with you:Why a slow start sometimes has NOTHING to do with you, and everything to do with your environmentHow to pull yourself out of the catastrophizing mentality and keep going rather than throwing in the towelMy own experience with slow starts & the process I use for looking at the whole picture and determining where to go from thereOwning a business is such a learning and growing experience – and we’re all going to have growing pains. 129: How To Get Over Criticism (And Sell Your Calligraphy Anyways)

If you’ve ever feared someone criticizing you for selling your creative product, listen up!If you’re new here – welcome! My name is Shinah, and I unabashedly sell premium level curse-word laced calligraphy courses on a very public scale – and over the past 8 years, I’ve gotten a lot of shit for that. But if you’re not new, you know those neigh sayers have just fueled me to become more outspoken. And in this week's episode, I’m going to teach you how to reframe your thinking so you can go from cringing at negative comments and worrying about putting yourself out there (like I used to!), to confidently running a million-dollar creative business too! Here’s what you’ll learn this week: ✔️ The hidden beliefs behind negative comments (hint: they’re not really about you) ✔️ How to reframe your mindset about criticism so it empowers you instead of stopping you ✔️ Why selling your art isn’t “icky” or “wrong” (and why women especially need to hear this)I’m here to show you the real meanings behind the harsh words people say – because no one should have the power to tear you down (especially when their own insecurities are really the issue). In the past 10 years of owning my own business, I’ve realized that those little dopamine hits (like wasting time on 40-minute Reels 🙃) might feel like they are moving you forward, but aren't always doing so. Sometimes it’s the boring things (like reviewing my expenses and auditing my software that’s been on my to-do list for MONTHS) that are the crucial factors in growing your business. In this episode, you’ll learn:✔️ The four key “time buckets” you should be using in your biz (you’ll be shocked at where you really spend your time)✔️ How cleaning up the backend of your business and doing little things – like creating saved email responses —can save you HOURS✔️ Why you need to routinely build time into your schedule to wear your “CEO Hat”, so you can hone in on the overall picture of your business and get done what you really need to⏳ It’s time to stop spinning your wheels and start running your business with intention.
