Episode 60: Reviewing Your Homelab, Sick, and Sleep-Deprived
This week on Crowbar Kernel Panic, we’re reviewing your homelab… while sick, sleep-deprived, and running on cough drops. Bo’s been fighting off a plague for two weeks, but we didn’t want to skip an episode — so we’re keeping it chill, catching up on community comments, and checking out an absolutely insane listener-submitted homelab from Levix that puts both of ours to shame. We also talk about hitting 400 subscribers (!!!), home server efficiency, Proxmox and TrueNAS setups, and Josh’s continuing saga of cursed motherboards and mysterious reboots. If you’ve got a homelab — big or small — send it in! We’d love to feature it on a future episode. 📩 Submit your homelab: [email protected] 💬 Join the Discord: https://discord.gg/qbV6eqkA 🎥 Watch the vlog: https://youtu.be/E0297HU2zsk Thanks for 400 subs, and for letting us hang out and be ridiculous every week. See you next episode — hopefully less sick, but just as sleep-deprived.

Episode 59: Homelab Hardware Showdown: Rack Servers vs Workstations vs Mini Clusters
Welcome back to Crowbar Kernel Panic! 🚀 In this episode, we dive into the three main “lanes” of homelab hardware and help you decide which one makes sense for your space, budget, and goals: Lane 1: Refurb Enterprise Rack — the loud, hot, datacenter monster 🏢 Lane 2: Workstation Builds — the “Goldilocks” option for power and sanity ⚖️ Lane 3: Low-Power Mini Clusters — silent bookshelf datacenters 📚 We compare cost, noise, power draw, expandability, and real-world use cases. Plus, we talk through subscriber comments, Kubernetes setups, and share some personal homelab stories (including when things go hilariously wrong). If you’re thinking about building your own homelab, or just want to hear about the trade-offs, this episode is for you. 👉 Join the Discord for discussion and advice: https://discord.gg/Nx6HgaAuZ3 👉 Follow along with the GitHub configs: https://github.com/bomccoy/homelab-proxmox-k3s

Episode 58: Homelab Projects That Will Boost Your IT Career
In this episode of Crowbar Kernel Panic, Bo and Josh break down the Top 5 homelab projects that aren’t just fun — they actually build real skills that can help you land (and grow in) an IT or DevOps career. We cover: How networking projects like Pi-hole, Unbound, and OpenSense teach fundamentals you’ll use in every IT job. Why virtualization with Proxmox and VMware is the gateway to enterprise-level skills. The power of containers with Docker and Podman (and why they’re unavoidable). Why Kubernetes is worth learning at home, even if it feels overkill. The often-forgotten importance of backups and disaster recovery — with real stories of failure and recovery. This isn’t just tinkering — these are the homelab projects that can set you apart in interviews and build confidence for real-world IT challenges. 👉 Which homelab project taught you the most (or burned you the hardest)? Tell us in the comments!

In this episode, Bo and Josh kick things off with some Capture the Flag war stories and home lab adventures before welcoming ChatGPT onto the show for a one-of-a-kind conversation. Episode 56: Stop Killing Games: Who Really Owns What You Buy?
In this episode of Crowbar Kernel Panic, we dive headfirst into the Stop Killing Games initiative — a global pushback from gamers, preservationists, and developers against the increasing trend of publishers shutting down games, removing them from stores, or making them unplayable even after purchase. From Ubisoft delisting The Crew to the short lifespans of live-service games like Rumbleverse and Knockout City, we explore the big question: Do you really own a game once you’ve paid for it? We break down: * The origins of the Stop Killing Games movement * High-profile shutdowns and delistings * What happens to single-player games with always-online DRM * Publisher ethics: Should they patch games to work offline before decommissioning? * Legal and moral questions around cracking and emulation * The role of the modding community and emulators in digital preservation * How platforms like Steam, GOG, and Epic compare in this landscape * Why indie developers and players alike should care about this trend Along the way, we share our personal takes on digital ownership, recall games we lost to shutdowns, and ask if we’re headed toward a future where even single-player experiences come with an expiration date. To close the show, Bo gives a quick update on his ongoing Godot card game project, ShadowLight — a solo dungeon-crawler inspired by dark fantasy themes, with a twist on time, memory, and resource management. If you care about preserving games, owning what you buy, or just want to hear what it’s like to build a game from scratch while the industry melts down around you — this episode’s for you. 🚀 Stay Connected: YouTube: https://youtu.be/3R1rYNJw1_Q Send us an email at [email protected] Join us on Discord. https://discord.gg/Nx6HgaAuZ3 Music from this episode "Bit Quest" and "Basic Implosion" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Episode 38: Planning a game with AI and struggling with the ARC A770
This episode was short prepped and spontaneous. It's been a little while since our last show and we've both had several life events holding us up from doing show prep. We didn't want to keep prolonging the recording of this episode so we decided to give it a shot recording with no prep. The topic of AI in game development led me to ask Chat GPT to help me plan a fantasy survival horror game. The results were so good I may actually be making this game and after a suggestion from Discord, I may be making it in Godot 4. Given my recent struggles running the ARC A770 on Linux Josh suggested I try Fedora 38. Ultimately, we're putting our faith in Linux 6.4...

Episode 26: Nobara Project and The Stanley Parable
NEWS Gnome new governance and other updates - https://thisweek.gnome.org/posts/2022/05/twig-43/ Nvidia moved many features behind firmware before opensourcing it’s kernel - https://www.pcgamer.com/nvidias-moved-most-of-the-code-to-firmware-before-releasing-open-source-linux-drivers/ Budgie submitted for inclusion in Fedora 37 - https://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/uq3gah/budgiedesktophasnowbeensubmittedfor/ Fedora 36 * I finally ditched Windows and only have Fedora installed on my laptop * I have Fedora installed to my 500gb ssd and I created a raid 0 between my 2 nvme drives to put all my games on. * I had to fix a permission issue before I could install any games to the mount point. I set the permission on the btrfs subvolume to 770 so that my user and group have full access to the mount. I made sure to give no permissions to everyone so that it's a little more secure. * After setting those permissions I could install all my games and play them. * Jedi Fallen order works fine now I can pause the game and resume and it plays normally. * Horizon zero dawn can now use dlss. * One issue I am still having is very strange. I could open the steam flatpak via the app icon totally normally until I set my nvidia gpu as the primary active gpu. After that I now have to use the flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam command to start steam. When switching back to intel/nvidia or just intel gpu the app icon can start steam again. * Wayland was a no go for any of my games so I am back on Xorg. Other than games though, wayland has come a long way and works with all my other applications. Nobara Project 36 My attempt at upgrading failed. NP documented a fix to allow for a successful process but after completion there were too many issues with the nvidia kernel to make it worth sticking with the installation. I opted for reinstalling. Games I tested * Horizon Zero Dawn - There was a fix for the messed up grass and sound crackling during my testing so I went back and tested this one again and is now actually mostly playable on every distro except Garuda and ZorinOS. * Witcher 3 - This game had a lot of stuttering under anything but Linux Mint. * Metro Exodus (Linux Native and Proton) - Linux Native was not playable on any Distro I tried due to being half cut off of my screen or severe stuttering. Proton on the other hand was not too bad for the most part but Linux Mint still was the smoothest. * Halo CE Anniversary - Played mostly smoothly with some stuttering on the arch distros but was totally playable on all the Ubuntu distros. * Splitgate - Has some general Linux issues when comparing it to Windows but is playable on Linux with over 200 FPS on my system just some stuttering issues. * Valhimne - Playable on all distros except Garuda. * Project Zomboid (This game ran fine everywhere I tested probably due to low system requirements) Arch Distros I tried * Manjaro - Was mostly fine but had some glaring issues such as multi monitor issues and gaming performance issues. * Endeavor - had some fairly deal breaking bugs like OBS and Screenshots not working with Plasma and generally more stuttering than on most other distros. * Garuda - Just plain didn’t work out of the box with its dragonized plasma desktop. Ubuntu Distros I tried * Ubuntu Gnome 21.10 - This statement goes for all but Mint but basically stuttering was very prevalent on all distros except Mint. Other issues I had were getting optimus to work properly. * Kubuntu 21.10 - Other issues I had were, games not popping up on the right screens I wanted and super + shift + arrow keys did not help. * FerenOS - Same kinda issue as Kubuntu with games not working on the right screen * Zorin OS 16 - Extreme stuttering in most games even with graphics set to low * Linux Mint 20.3 - Once vulkan shaders were compiled ( which I allowed every distro to compile that I tried) The games ran smoothly with little to no stutters or slowdowns. Even my laptop fans are controlled correctly on mint out of the box. Caveat to that is I do have to set the speed profiles under windows but once thats set mint uses the correct settings. Downgrade Horizon Zero Dawn Github Script * Ubuntu 21.10 performance * FPS between 40 and 65 roughly * Frametimes highest about 25ms * Gameplay seems smooth * Windows 10 21H2 * FPS between 75 and 115 with DLSS enabled * FPS between 60 and 85 without DLSS * Frametimes no more than 15ms * Gameplay extremely smooth * Conclusion * Valve and Ubuntu have a long way to go to catch up with Windows performance from what I have seen. I have tested over 20 games both Windows and Linux native games and almost always Windows pulls out ahead. This is not an issue with games that run at a high FPS (60 FPS or higher) but becomes much more noticeable when getting below 60 FPS. Heaven Dust and Heaven Dust 2 * Dev - One Gruel Studio * Two person team from China * Publisher - Indienova * ProtonDB - Has no reviews yet (I’ll be writing one) * I had 0 issues or modifications to get the games to run. * “A love letter to Resident Evil.” * A cutsie, anime, chibi style survival horror. Our character wakes up locked in a maintenance closet. We don’t don’t know immediately who he is or why he’s trapped in this zombie infested mansion but we learn about that as we solve puzzles and make our way out of the mansion/laboratory. * Journals * The story is told through journals in true 90s survival horror fashion. * The localization is relatively bad. Better in Heaven Dust 2 but still not perfect. * Combat * Controller - auto aim system * Mouse/keyboard - MG:S style HD1 has an animation issue, when bitten by zombies the animation takes longer than the zombies next bit. Often leading to one bit means death. * HD2 map is a little tighter than HD1 and zombies are often hidden behind the isometric wall and bit you without any clue they are there. The rooms in HD2 are blacked out before entering. * Puzzles * The puzzles in HD1 are fantastic and sprawling. Leading the player to run back and forth across the already explored map to find keys and items needed to inch further.
