ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥soohee mahalaa pehilaa ||Soohee, First Mehla:ਜਿਉ ਆਰਣਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਇ ਭੰਨਿ ਘੜਾਈਐ ॥jiau aaran lohaa pai bha(n)n ghaRaieeaai ||As iron is melted in the forge and re-shaped,ਤਿਉ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਇ ਭਵੈ ਭਵਾਈਐ ॥੧॥tiau saakat jonee pai bhavai bhavaieeaai ||1||so is the godless materialist reincarnated, and forced to wander aimlessly. ||1||ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ॥bin boojhe sabh dhukh dhukh kamaavanaa ||Without understanding, everything is suffering, earning only more suffering.ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਵਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥haumai aavai jai bharam bhulaavanaa ||1|| rahaau ||In his ego, he comes and goes, wandering in confusion, deluded by doubt. ||1||Pause||ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਖਣਹਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥too(n) guramukh rakhanahaar har naam dhiaaieeaai ||You save those who are Gurmukh, O Lord, through meditation on Your Naam.ਮੇਲਹਿ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਰਜਾਇ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥੨॥meleh tujheh rajai sabadh kamaieeaai ||2||You blend with Yourself, by Your Will, those who practice the Word of the Shabad. ||2||ਤੂੰ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥too(n) kar kar vekheh aap dheh su paieeaai ||You created the Creation, and You Yourself gaze upon it; whatever You give, is received.ਤੂ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ਦਰਿ ਬੀਨਾਈਐ ॥੩॥too dhekheh thaap authaap dhar beenaieeaai ||3||You watch, establish and disestablish; You keep all in Your vision at Your Door. ||3||ਦੇਹੀ ਹੋਵਗਿ ਖਾਕੁ ਪਵਣੁ ਉਡਾਈਐ ॥dhehee hovag khaak pavan auddaieeaai ||The body shall turn to dust, and the soul shall fly away.ਇਹੁ ਕਿਥੈ ਘਰੁ ਅਉਤਾਕੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥eih kithai ghar aautaak mahal na paieeaai ||4||So where are their homes and resting places now? They do not find the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, either. ||4||ਦਿਹੁ ਦੀਵੀ ਅੰਧ ਘੋਰੁ ਘਬੁ ਮੁਹਾਈਐ ॥dhih dheevee a(n)dh ghor ghab muhaieeaai ||In the pitch darkness of broad daylight, their wealth is being plundered.ਗਰਬਿ ਮੁਸੈ ਘਰੁ ਚੋਰੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥੫॥garab musai ghar chor kis rooaaieeaai ||5||Pride is looting their homes like a thief; where can they file their complaint? ||5||ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਗਾਈਐ ॥guramukh chor na laag har naam jagaieeaai ||The thief does not break into the home of the Gurmukh; he is awake in the Name of the Lord.ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਆਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੀਪਾਈਐ ॥੬॥sabadh nivaaree aag jot dheepaieeaai ||6||The Word of the Shabad puts out the fire of desire; God's Light illuminates and enlightens. ||6||ਲਾਲੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥laal ratan har naam gur surat bujhaieeaai ||The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a jewel, a ruby; the Guru has taught me the Word of the Shabad.ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ ਜੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥sadhaa rahai nihakaam je guramat paieeaai ||7||One who follows the Guru's Teachings remains forever free of desire. ||7||ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥raat dhihai har naau ma(n)n vasaieeaai ||Night and day, enshrine the Lord's Name within your mind.ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਈਐ ॥੮॥੨॥੪॥naanak mel milai je tudh bhaieeaai ||8||2||4||Please unite Nanak in Union, O Lord, if it is pleasing to Your Will. ||8||2||4||Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Raag Soohee - 752

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥soratt mahalaa panjavaa ||Sorat'h, Fifth Mehla:ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥sarab sukhaa kaa dhaataa satigur taa kee saranee paieeaai ||ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ । The True Guru is the Giver of all peace and comfort - seek His Sanctuary.ਦਰਸਨੁ ਭੇਟਤ ਹੋਤ ਅਨੰਦਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਗਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਈਐ ॥੧॥dharasan bheTat hot ana(n)dhaa dhookh giaa har gaieeaai ||1||ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।Beholding the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, bliss ensues, pain is dispelled, and one sings the Lord's Praises. ||1||ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥har ras peevahu bhaiee ||ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰੋDrink in the sublime essence of the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny.ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਨਾਮੋ ਆਰਾਧਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥naam japahu naamo aaraadhahu gur poore kee saranaiee || rahaau ||ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਰੋ ।ਰਹਾਉ।Chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord; worship the Naam in adoration, and enter the Sanctuary of the Perfect Guru. ||Pause||ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋਈ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਭਾਈ ॥tiseh paraapat jis dhur likhiaa soiee pooran bhaiee ||ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ Only one who has such pre-ordained destiny receives it; he alone becomes perfect, O Siblings of Destiny.ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੨॥੨੫॥੮੯॥naanak kee bena(n)tee prabh jee naam rahaa liv laiee ||2||25||89||। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ) ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ (ਭੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਇਹ) ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹੈ—ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਾਂ ।੨।੨੫।੮੯।Nanak's prayer, O Dear God, is to remain lovingly absorbed in the Naam. ||2||25||89||Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Sorath - 630

ਦੁਲਭ ਜਨਮੁ ਪੁੰਨ ਫਲ ਪਾਇਓ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਤ ਅਬਿਬੇਕੈ ॥dhulabh janam pu(n)n fal paio birathaa jaat abibekai ||ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਬੜੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ) ਭਲੇ ਕੰੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਵਜੋਂ ਅਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ, I obtained this precious human life as a reward for my past actions, but without discriminating wisdom, it is wasted in vain.ਰਾਜੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਆਸਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਹ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੧॥raaje i(n)dhr samasar gireh aasan bin har bhagat kahahu keh lekhai ||1||ਪਰ ਅਸਾਡੇ ਅੰਞਾਣਪੁਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ; (ਅਸਾਂ ਕਦੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ) ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹੇ ਤਾਂ (ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਰਾਜੇ ਇੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਸੁਰਗ ਵਰਗੇ ਭੀ ਮਹਿਲ ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ ।੧।Tell me, without devotional worship of the Lord, of what use are mansions and thrones like those of King Indra? ||1||ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਰਸੁ ॥n beechaario raajaa raam ko ras ||ਅਸਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ-ਧਾਰੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੇ) ਜਗਤ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਉਸ ਆਨੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਦੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆYou have not considered the sublime essence of the Name of the Lord, our King;ਜਿਹ ਰਸ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਬੀਸਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥jeh ras an ras beesar jaahee ||1|| rahaau ||ਜਿਸ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਚਸਕੇ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।this sublime essence shall cause you to forget all other essences. ||1||Pause||ਜਾਨਿ ਅਜਾਨ ਭਏ ਹਮ ਬਾਵਰ ਸੋਚ ਅਸੋਚ ਦਿਵਸ ਜਾਹੀ ॥jaan ajaan bhe ham baavar soch asoch dhivas jaahee ||ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਾਣਦੇ ਬੁੱਝਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਅਸੀ ਕਮਲੇ ਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ, ਅਸਾਡੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ) ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਮੰਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ,We do not know what we need to know, and we have become insane. We do not consider what we should consider; our days are passing away.ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਸਬਲ ਨਿਬਲ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਰਮਾਰਥ ਪਰਵੇਸ ਨਹੀ ॥੨॥ei(n)dhree sabal nibal bibek budh paramaarath paraves nahee ||2||ਅਸਾਡੀ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਧ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਘਟ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਅਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਸੋਚ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਫੁਰੀ ਕਿ ਅਸਾਡੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਲੋੜ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ ।Our passions are strong, and our discriminating intellect is weak; we have no access to the supreme objective. ||2||ਕਹੀਅਤ ਆਨ ਅਚਰੀਅਤ ਅਨ ਕਛੁ ਸਮਝ ਨ ਪਰੈ ਅਪਰ ਮਾਇਆ ॥kaheeat aan achareeat an kachh samajh na parai apar maiaa ||ਅਸੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਰ ਹਾਂ, ਮਾਇਆ ਇਤਨੀ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸਾਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੀ ਮੂਰਖਤਾ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ We say one thing, and do something else; entangled in endless Maya, we do not understand anything.ਕਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਉਦਾਸ ਦਾਸ ਮਤਿ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਕੋਪੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਦਇਆ ॥੩॥੩॥keh ravidhaas audhaas dhaas mat parahar kop karahu jeea dhiaa ||3||3||ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ—ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣ ਇਸ (ਮੂਰਖ-ਪੁਣੇ) ਤੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਞਾਣਪੁਣੇ ਤੇ) ਗੁੱਸਾ ਨਾਹ ਕਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਨੀ ।Says Ravi Daas, Your slave, O Lord, I am disillusioned and detached; please, spare me Your anger, and have mercy on my soul. ||3||3||Bhagat Ravi Daas Ji in Raag Sorath - 658

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥soratt mahalaa nauvaa ||Sorat'h, Ninth Mehla:ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਜਾਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥preetam jaan leh man maahee ||ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਲੈ, O dear friend, know this in your mind.ਅਪਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਹੀ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਂਧਿਓ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥apane sukh siau hee jag faa(n)dhio ko kaahoo ko naahee ||1|| rahaau ||ਕਿ) ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ । ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ (ਤੋੜ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਥੀ) ਨਹੀਂ (ਬਣਦਾ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।The world is entangled in its own pleasures; no one is for anyone else. ||1||Pause||ਸੁਖ ਮੈ ਆਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਬੈਠਤ ਰਹਤ ਚਹੂ ਦਿਸਿ ਘੇਰੈ ॥sukh mai aan bahut mil baittat rahat chahoo dhis gherai ||ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ)! ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ (ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ) ਕਈ ਯਾਰ ਦੋਸਤ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਪਾਸ) ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਚੌਹੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਘੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ । In good times, many come and sit together, surrounding you on all four sides.ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪਰੀ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਸੰਗੁ ਛਾਡਿਤ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਨੇਰੈ ॥੧॥bipat paree sabh hee sa(n)g chhaaddit kouoo na aavat nerai ||1||(ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ) ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਫਿਰ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ ।੧।But when hard times come, they all leave, and no one comes near you. ||1||ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹਿਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਤ ਸੰਗ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ghar kee naar bahut hit jaa siau sadhaa rahat sa(n)g laagee ||ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਘਰ ਦੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਭੀ), ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਬੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੀ ਸਦਾ (ਖਸਮ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈYour wife, whom you love so much, and who has remained ever attached to you,ਜਬ ਹੀ ਹੰਸ ਤਜੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਗੀ ॥੨॥jab hee ha(n)s tajee ieh kaa(n)iaa pret pret kar bhaagee ||2||ਜਿਸ ਹੀ ਵੇਲੇ (ਪਤੀ ਦਾ) ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਆਖ ਕੇ) ਪਰੇ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਰ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈ ਮਰ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈ ।੨।runs away crying, ""Ghost! Ghost!"", as soon as the swan-soul leaves this body. ||2||ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਇਓ ॥eeh bidh ko biauhaar banio hai jaa siau neh lagaio ||ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!
