Deborah Gee
by Deborah Gee
Raised in Mineral Wells, Texas, Deborah Gee moved to Los Angeles and began performing in the mid1990s at local music spots including The Troubadour, Molly Malone’s and Genghis Cohen. She was spotted by Alan Myers (Devo) at her second L.A. gig and Myers signed on as drummer. Gee signed a demo deal with A&M Records and released her album PORTAL in 2000. Gee wrote or co-wrote all of the songs. The roster of producers on the album is a music industry Who’s Who including Mike Clink, Tal Herzberg, Michael Woodrum, Chris Lord-Alge, CJ De Villar and Jon Ingoldsby. Songs from PORTAL were placed in films and television shows*, notably “Pearl”, which was placed in the films “Between the Sheets” and “The Smokers”. In 2001, Gee met ex-Dickies guitarist/producer Glen Laughlin at a coffeehouse. She was looking for a new guitarist for her band, and the two began performing together and working on what was initially intended to be her second solo album. After meeting drummer Ryan Brown at a p

Naked
"Nice spoken word interludes and edgy lyrics decrying the destruction of innocence in particular and religulousness in general. Lots of nice musical detours in the arrangment." - Dale Nickey,The Muse Patrol

Risk
“Risk” seems to possess a vague notion of being an Alt-Country crossover hit. http://themusepatrol.com/2013/01/27/lost-treasure-deborah-gees-portal-reopened/

Perfect Girl
A bouncy prog-pop quickie that lyrically slaps upside the head the pathetic fool in all men. You know what I’m talking about; the man child who constantly devalues who they’re with in favor of the idealized Perfect Girl who exists only in the imagination and ego. http://themusepatrol.com/2013/01/27/lost-treasure-deborah-gees-portal-reopened/

Pearl
The bridge section [of Pearl] where Gee scats against the mournful cello phrases shows the depth, power and fragility of a master vocalist and chanteuse. http://themusepatrol.com/2013/01/27/lost-treasure-deborah-gees-portal-reopened/

Say What You Mean
“Say What You Mean” is the smart and obvious choice as the gateway tune to the album. Arguably the the most fully realized piece of music on Portal, I’d venture this selection received a lot of TLC in the tracking and mixing phase of the production. Co-produced by C.J. DeVillar; It has a graceful and elegant mid-tempo groove laced with spacey (yet restrained) sitar and tremolo guitar effects. A good stoner tune that’s tight in the pocket and frosted with a memorable hook line. http://themusepatrol.com/2013/01/27/lost-treasure-deborah-gees-portal-reopened/
