The Geneva Accords ended the French war but only postponed the Vietnamese civil war to a later date.

The DRV won fair and square against France at Dien Bien Phu. But the Vietnamese military and society had to pay and astonishing price for victory.

The battle of Dien Bien Phu almost started on January 25th, 1954....

1953. General Navarre is the 7th coach appointed for the French French team. His goal: to prevent France from being relegated from Indochina. His plan : play it safe in 1953-54, then go on the offensive from 1955 onwards. But General Giap wants to put a spanner in his works and attacks in Tai country, thereby threatening Laos. The road to Dien Bien Phu is then wide open.

In 1953, the French are lost. What to do? Follow public opinion, cut their losses and get out of Indochina? Or fight harder, as advised by the new American administration? While France is heistating, the DRV makes a move in Laos.

1952: Strategic differences began to appear between French and American allies, at the very moment when the Vietnamese and Chinese agreed to extend the war to the North West of Viet Nam, towards the border with Laos.

Between 1951 and 1954, France and the DRV (Democratic Republic of Viet Nam) fought 8 major battles. To compete with France, Ho Chi Minh and his government mobilised the whole population in an all encompassing total war by building a totalitarian communist state.

Did the dazzling and meteoric tenure of General de Lattre move the French cause forward in Vietnam? On 8 March 1949, Viet Nam became independent as an associated state within the French Union. Viet Nam reunified its two protectorates, regained Cochinchina and Bao Daï became head of state. However, this was not real independence. It was just a ploy by the French to get American assistance and secure French presence in Viet Nam.

1948: The security situation is getting worse and France is still procrastinating about giving its independence to a unified Viet Nam. 1947: Ho Chi Minh is isolated. Will he survive Operation Lea, the massive French offensive? At the same time an alliance between non-communist Vietnamese nationalists and the French is starting to take form and the former emperor Bao Dai is in the middle of it. In 1946, in Paris, Ho Chi Minh described the future war this way to American journalist David Schoenbrun: "It will be a war between an elephant and a tiger. If the tiger ever stands still the elephant will crush him with his mighty tusks. But the tiger does not stand still. He lurks in the jungle by day and emerges by night. He will leap upon the back of the elephant, tearing huge chunks from his hide, and then he will leap back into the dark jungle. And slowly the elephant will bleed to death. After negotiations failed in 1946, it was only a matter of time before war started between France and the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam (DRV). .

In 1946, Ho Chi Minh travelled to Paris to have France recognise Viet Nam's independence. But it was not meant to be.

Why on earth did Ho Chi Minh welcome back the French in the DRV without having its independence recognised?

In September 1945, the British army entered Saigon, while the Chinese Nationalist troops occupied Hanoi. How did Ho Chi Minh deal with them to avoid a French come-back?

In 1945, the independence of Viet Nam was proclaimed twice: first Bao Dai proclaimed the Empire of Viet Nam in march 1945, then Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam on the September 2nd 1945.

Après la bataille de Vertières, Dessalines proclame l’indépendance de la République d’Haïti

Avec le déclenchement de l’épidémie de fièvre jaune à l’été 1802, c’est mort pour Leclerc et son expédition.

Avec l’arrivée de l’expédition Leclerc, c’en est fini du règne de Toussaint Louverture sur la colonie. Abandonné par la population noire et lâché par ses généraux , il sort de notre histoire par la petite porte.

Où on traite des raisons qui ont poussé Napoléon à lancer une expédition militaire contre Toussaint Louverture.

Entre 1800 et 1801, Toussaint Louverture établit un régime fondé sur le travail fondé des cultivateurs et la répression militaire. Ce faisant, il s’aliène ceux qui sont à la base de son ascension politique, les noirs ; comme le montre la révolte de Moise en fin 1801. Cela ne présage rien de bon à la veille de l’arrivée de l’expédition punitive de Napoléon.

En 1799, les Anglais ont quitté la colonie et Toussaint Louverture a chassé Hédouville, l'agent du Directoire. Ne lui reste plus qu'à se débarrasser d'André Rigaud pour être seul maitre de la colonie.

Un an après avoir expulsé le Commissaire de la République Sonthonax, Toussaint Louverture expulse l’Agent du Directoire, Hédouville, et signe unilatéralement des accords avec la Grande Bretagne et les Etats-Unis. Le respect est mort….

En 1796, l’arrivée d’une 3ème commission civile dirigée par Sonthonax ouvre une nouvelle période de lutte politique .

Deux à peine après avoir rejoint le camp républicain, Toussaint Louverture profite du coup d’état raté du Général Jean-Louis Vilatte pour se hisser au rang de Gouverneur Adjoint

1795: Jean-François et Biassou, les deux seuls chefsnoirs survivants de l'insurrection de 1791, doivent quitter Haïti après la défaite de leurs alliés espagnols....

Mai 1794: Toussaint Louverture, jusque là général de l’armée ins alliée à l’Espagne, fait défection et rejoint le camp républicain.

Avec la proclamation du 5 mai 1793, Sonthonax a mis le doigt dans un engrenage qui va aboutir à la proclamtion d'émancipation générale du 29 août 1793. Avant d'en arriver la, la ville du Cap part aussi en fumée entrainant l'exode des élites blanches.

La fin 1791 et debut 1792 sont marquées par a loi du 4 avril 1792, reconnaissant la pleine citoyenneté aux gens de couleur mais aussi par la continuation de la guerre dans toute la colonie: au sud et à l'ouest, entre blancs et gens de couleur; au nord, idem malgré des pourparlers etntre les rebelles noirs et les notables blancs. Ces pourparlers marquent l'entrée en scène d'un personnage déjà exceptionnel prénommé Toussaint.

Août 1791, tandis que coups de poing trottent et que nos champions blancs et de couleur songent à se défendre, arrivent de troisièmes larrons qui saisissent les Maîtres Colons, brulent les habitations et lancent le long combat de l'abolition de l'esclavage. C'est le début de la révolte des esclaves!
