Desperate times call for desperate measures. The Academy Awards in 2020 failed to nominate any women in the Best Director category, again, having last nominated Greta Gerwig in 2017 for Ladybird. Only five times in the Oscars’ 92 year history has a woman received a directing nomination, and only once has a woman won.Really, this is just one example of how the representation of women behind and in front of the camera is still failing to get the kind of mainstream recognition it deserves. We might not be able to do much to change that, but part of problem is that the overwhelming majority of film critics are male - so we’ve decided to add our voice to the minority and help to change that a little, tiny bit. As a couple (in more ways than one) of women who are obsessed with going to the cinema and binging the latest TV series, our new pop culture podcast will mostly be a way for us to put all that time to good use.
