Despite the Limits

My name is Scot Storey, and I created this podcast, “Despite the Limits” to provide short conversations aimed at helping leaders grow professionally and personally.  As a lifelong student of human connection, leadership, and communication, I am passionate about shaping the growth and capabilities of leaders. My personal journey in leadership development has been shaped by a career of service in the US Army’s Special Operations Forces leading numerous teams from just a few operators to organizations several thousand people strong, with the Army’s Rangers, Green Berets and Civil Affairs units in some the world’s most remote and arduous conditions. I believe in the power of a good story to shape personal connections and help people reach their full potential.  That is what this podcast is all about.Let’s have a conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4dhttps://www.johncmaxwellgroup.

    It is what it is.

Send us Fan MailPain is pain and it is unpleasant, but it does not have to become suffering. This is the idea behind Radical Acceptance. The phrase “It is what it is” sums up the idea.In a 2012 blog post on the website Psychology Today, Dr. Karyn Hall wrote “Accepting life on life’s terms and not resisting what you cannot or choose not to change. Radical acceptance is about saying yes to life, just as it is.” This episode is all about the concept of radical Acceptance and, thanks to the massive pollen bloom in North Carolina I sound awful in it but got an opportunity to apply what I am talking about. Here is a link to the Psychology Today blog called “Why Do We Need Friends? Six Benefits of Healthy Friendships” written by Kristen Fuller and posted on July 8, 2012 that I reference.https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/pieces-of-mind/201207/radical-acceptanceThanks for checking this episode out. Until next time friends!Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

A Little Help From My Friends

Send us Fan MailWe moved into a new house recently and I’ve taken the opportunity to build my home gym. In this episode I talk about five indicators of longevity as listed on the “Barbell Medicine” Podcast episode #386, Longevity Myths.  Here is a link to the show website if you want to listen to their whole episode or just check out their show in general.https://www.barbellmedicine.com/podcast/Another indicator of longevity is how connected you are socially. Friends can make an impact on your life. This is what I explore for most of this episode, the impact of friends. In preparing for this episode, I read a few articles that I found helpful. Here is one from Psychology Today called “Why Do We Need Friends? New Year No Fear

Send us Fan MailWelcome season 3 of Despite the Limits. 2026 is well underway and there is a feeling of uncertainty in our world today. Our economic and political climates are volatile to say the least. One of my coping mechanisms is to look for light news stories that can encourage me and maybe even teach me a little bit along the way. This episode is inspired by one such story. On January 25, 2026 Alex Honnold became the first person to climb the Taipei 101 Skyscraper unaided. The story was intriguing to me. It was full of the neuroscience stuff I love. While Honnold’s brain is wired differently, he credits preparation with why he doesn’t have fear like the rest of the population. In this episode, I explore and expand on that idea a little.Since this is the beginning of season 3, I briefly visit why I started podcasting in the first place. If you want to hear the details here is the link to the very first episode. “Why Me? Why Now?”https://www.buzzsprout.com/2303705/episodes/14330114If you are interested in my previous talks about fear, here is the link to Season 2 Episode 14, “Let’s Talk about Fear!”https://www.buzzsprout.com/2303705/episodes/18108457Finally, if you are a bit of a neuroscience nerd too and want to read the article about Alex Honnold and his unique brain here is a link to that too!https://www.musc.edu/content-hub/News/2019/03/18/How-a-neuroscientist-and-professional-climber-learned-from-one-another?utm_source=join1440&utm_medium=email&utm_placement=newsletter&user_id=672371eaceb81c878a01bfc7Until next time friends!Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Six Mistakes to Avoid in the New Year

Send us Fan MailIn this last episode of Season 2, I look at “The Six Mistakes of Man”.Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC) was a Roman statesman and scholar whose work was admired by ancient scholars and is also admired by modern scholars today. It appears we have wrestled with these six mistakes for thousands of years. Here they are:1)The illusion that personal gain is made up of crushing others.2)The tendency to worry about things that cannot be changed or corrected.3)Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it.4)Refusing to set aside trivial preferences.5)Neglecting development and refinement of the mind, and not acquiring the habit of reading and study.6)Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do.If you were looking for a discussion about how to do an end of year review let me invite you to check out episode 23 from Season 1, “How to Do an End of Year Review”. Let's Talk about Fear!

Send us Fan MailI release the podcast on the last Friday of each month, which means this episode went public on Halloween. Since so much of the season seems to be centered on scary stories and creepy decorations in the neighborhoods it seemed like a good time to talk about fear.Fear seems to be everywhere these days and it is an interesting paradox. Fear often keeps is from trying the very things we need to do to succeed which in turn guarantees our fears become reality. However, we can reframe how we view the things that scare us and train our minds and bodies to react differently.Early in the episode I talk about the 2013 movie, After Earth” and share a quote from the character played by Will Smith where he says fear is a choice.  Here is a link to a YouTube clip with the scene.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV8jbzudYJ8 I also talk about a Simon Sinek talk about being nervous versus being excited. If you want to hear his talk directly, here is a link to that YouTube clip.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SUTInEaQ3Q Happy Halloween and let’s go face our fears!Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    Embrace the Suck!

Send us Fan MailIf you are struggling with some difficult times or a significant challenge then this is the episode for you.  “Embrace the Suck” is my simple grunt way of describing the Stockdale Paradox. In this episode I talk about the Stockdale Paradox and how we can employ it to do more than survive in our difficult times but maybe even thrive.I recommend the book “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. It is a leadership classic and in it, Collins recounts a conversation with Medal of Honor Recipient retired Navy Admiral James Stockdale who, during his time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam observed that those who were optimistic without acknowledging their present circumstances rarely survived.  If you want to read more about the Stockdale Paradox but don’t want to read a whole book here is a link to an article from Big Think published October 23, 2022. This article, Stockdale Paradox: Why confronting reality is vital to success provides a good snapshot and is worth ten minutes of your time.https://bigthink.com/health/stockdale-paradox-confronting-reality-vital-success/ Here is a link to a YouTube clip of Sylvester Stallone playing Rocky Balboa talking to his son. I quote a line from this speech but the l like the whole scene so you can see it here.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Vg4uyYwEkRemember, often times it is what it is so, “Embrace the Suck!”Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    The Road Less Travelled

Send us Fan Mail“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” These penned by Robert Frost were first published in 1915. Today more than a 100 years later I think they still ring true.  In this episode I reflect of a few of the hikes I have taken with my wife Cathy this summer and the life lessons we have taken from them.•Be willing to hike the extra mile and follow the trail to its end.•You don’t know what you don’t know – that shouldn’t stop you from moving forward.•Disappointment is the same as regret. You can be disappointed in a detail and still happy with the overall decision.•Take the side questI would love to hear what you think about this episode.Until next time friendsLet’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Where you sit, determines where you stand!

Send us Fan Mail“Where you sit, determines where you stand.” This a phrase I did not really understand when I first heard it as a young staff officer. In this episode, I talk about how our backgrounds shape our perspectives. I also spend some time talking about the importance of seeking the perspective of multiple people, perhaps most importantly the perspectives of people with whom we disagree. I recommend you get your hands on Sebastian Junger’s book, “Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging.” His observations about where we are as a nation are eye opening. Finally, if you want to review my thoughts on seeking the ideas of others, especially those who disagree with you check out Episode 9 of Season 2, “Understanding the Experts”. https://www.buzzsprout.com/2303705/episodes/17229853Until next time friends.Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Send us Fan MailJune marks the halfway point in this second season of “Despite the Limits.” The main concept of this episode came to mind while I was serving as the chief of the Land Navigation committee at a JROTC camp. True heroes are really just ordinary people like you and me. Here are some links to things I mention in this episode.Episode 11 of season 1, “Failure is not your Enemy” is where you can hear more about my tendency to fail land navigation regularly in my early military career. So now look for the podcast to drop on the last Friday of each monthHere are some links to things I mention in this episode.Episode 8 of season 2, “There is no such thing as bad news” where I talk about the shift in production timelines and why I made that decision. There is no such thing as bad news!

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I reflect on my father telling me, “Bad news is not like fine wine. It doesn’t improve with age.” Since and did not and do not drink wine, the metaphor is lost on me. Later in life I learned that there really is no such thing as bad news, rather there is only accurate and timely news.I also discuss my decision to reduce the frequency in which I produce and release podcast episodes from twice a month to once a month. I believe this will allow me to produce a better podcast for you.I mention episode 8 of season 1, “Don’t Yell at Your Team”. Send us Fan MailIn preparing for this episode, I was involved in a rear end collision. So, rather than forging ahead with my plan I thought I would share the experience with you.My initial reaction was poor to say the least. I have spent some time evaluating my reaction and a cup of spilled coffee taught me a lot about why I may have reacted so poorly.I mention episode 6 of season 2, “Everybody Needs a Mentor, a Peer, and a Student” toward the end of this episode. Everybody Needs a Mentor, a Peer, and a Student.

Send us Fan MailThere are three kinds of people you need in your life if you want to grow. Everybody needs a mentor, a peer, and a student if you are to grow to your full potential. This episode was born during my Spring Break travel to the Texas coast to visit my family. The trip gave me time to think about a few of my assignments in the Army. These assignments have stayed in my mind all these years because of the people I was privileged to serve with. Join me while I talk about the impact of having a mentor, a peer and a student.Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

I also talk about what voluntary hardship is along with how I apply it to my own life.I describe the three types of fun and talk about how they fit into the concept voluntary hardship as well. If you want to grow move out of your comfort zone and get comfortable with being uncomfortable.Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Collaborative Communication is in our Biology

Send us Fan MailConnection is vital to any effort we make to effectively communicate, especially if we want to collaborate. Have you ever wondered why this is? This is the topic I explore in Season 2 Episode 4.  It is my initial discussion about communication this season. This need to connect is tied to our biology and is the reason we survived when Neanderthal man did not.If you want to explore this deeper let me recommend the book “Survival of the Friendliest” written by Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods. Order from Chaos

Send us Fan MailThis is episode 3 of season two and I had planned to talk about communication, but the I sensed some uncertainty from the people I have been talking too. So, this episode is focused on leading in these uncertain times. How do we bring order to the chaos? In this episode I share things to do when you are leading you team through uncertain times. There are three:(1) Secure yourself first and control the controllables.(2) Practice servant leadership – move slowly through the crowd and talk to people, they want to, and need to hear your voice. (3) Do for one what you want to do for many.Early in the episode I mention a season one discussion about Leadership Crucibles. Telling Veteran's stories - My discussion with Tracer Burnout Hosts Dan Baker and Roger Vogel

Send us Fan MailEpisode 2 of Season 2 is the first time I am bringing different voices onto the podcast. I was able to spend some time the studio of the Tracer Burnout podcast with the hosts Dan Baker and Roger Vogel. Their podcast is dedicated to letting veterans share their stories. I was honored to be their guest and share my story of service which they will air at a later date, but afterwards we spent a little time talking about their journey. We had a great conversation and what they are doing is important. I did notice a few things inside our conversation.  You will hear a lot about significance more than success. These guys want to do something for their fellow veterans and their families. The power of the team is a clear theme in their journey, not only how they support one another but the veteran community too.I hope you enjoy this episode and I hope you will check out the Tracer Burnout Podcast. They have a video format so you can find them on YouTube as well as the usual audio distribution lists like Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Below is a link to their website where you can find out more about their mission and links to their most recent episodes. https://tracerburnout.com/home-1Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    Cultivating Discipline

Send us Fan MailThis first episode of season 2 comes from a listener suggestion. Bill Emig reached out to me through Facebook and asked me about discipline. Specifically, he asked me about cultivating a life of discipline. This episode is about the two key components to cultivating discipline, habit and identity. I talk about why it is so hard to change bad habits and how to use the habit cycle to change them. I also talk about how to build new habits from scratch. I close out with some talk about motivation and consistency. If you want to build discipline into your life, I recommend three books to help you. “The Talent Code” by Daniel Coyle. “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, and “The Power to Change” by Craig Groeshel. These three books have really helped me as I strive to maintain discipline.Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    Now What?

Send us Fan MailEpisode 24 is the final episode in this first season of “Despite the Limits”. In it I revisit the reason why I started the podcast in the first place. I discuss some recurring themes through the season. I also talk a little about changes you can expect in Season 2.Despite the Limits is intended to provide short conversations aimed at helping leaders grow professionally and personally.  These are lessons I learned from more than 30 years in the Army’s Rangers, Green Berets and Civil Affairs, along with more than 20 years in both voluntary and vocational ministry. There were three recurring themes in Season 1. First, while some limits are real, most are creations of our own minds so we can stretch, bend or even break them. Second, failure is not an option but rather a part of our growth process. Finally, we absolutely need community.I close out our discussion with three changes you can expect in season 2.  First, I will begin to incorporate other voices through some interviews and conversations with other leaders in some upcoming episodes. Second, I am going to shift the content more toward better communication. The third change is possibly the biggest, I am starting a new job which will influence how I do the podcast in the future.I am really grateful that you have joined me for season 1 and look forward to continuing our conversations in 2025.Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    Do it Now!

Send us Fan MailThe end of 2024 is just around the corner and I had some thoughts to share so here is a bonus episode. In episode 23 I talked about doing an end of year review. This episode explores the concept of New Year’s resolutions and talks about while they are good things, we probably should not wait for the New Year to start incorporating any changes.Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

How to do an End of Year Review

Send us Fan MailThe end of 2024 is quickly approaching. In episode 23 I talk about how I will incorporate an end of year review into how I am approaching the close of the year. I start with the process that author and speaker, John Maxwell uses and then discuss some of the observation I see from how he does this that I intend to incorporate into my own process. Here is a quick summary of some things to consider as you do your own end of year review. 1.Be deliberate. Schedule specific time and go to a specific place.2.Review everything you did and determine: - what you should do more of- what you should do less of- what should you eliminate all together- anything you need to add3.Identify any changes you need to make.I will do my own end of year review in a few weeks and will likely identify some changes to make. Once I do, I will share these with you and would welcome conversation with you about your own end of year review and changes you are making. These people can inspire you, encourage you, coach and teach you, amplify your efforts, and even – if need be- provide you a gentle push to just get started. Never under estimate the power of having a team on your side. Here is a link to Episode 16 – “What to do when you’re stuck” if you want to listen to the overview of all six steps again or if you have not heard it yet: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2303705/15478024For review, the six steps are:1.Overcome Limiting Beliefs2.Set goals3.Develop a plan4.Build a coalition for support5.Learn from failure6.Celebrate the small winsHere is a link to Josh Denhart’s Lead Ministry webpage and the podcast portal so you can check out what he does: https://leadministry.com/podcast/Tony Rodriguez’s “FTU…Life After the Military” podcast can be found on PodBean through this link:  https://arantoniorodriguez98.podbean.com/Finally, if you are interested in the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and what they do, you can find out more here: https://www.elks.org/Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    Develop A Plan

Send us Fan MailEpisode 19 of Despite the Limits is the fourth in a series of podcasts exploring practical steps you can take when you feel stuck or simply cannot seem to get started moving toward your dream. In this episode I overview the military’s five paragraph operations order as a framework we can use to do step three – “Develop a Plan”. Often, we don’t move forward from goal setting to making a plan because we either don’t know how or we are worried what others may think. A good plan is better than a perfect plan. It just needs to move us to action. Here is a link to Episode 16 – “What to do when you’re stuck” if you want to listen to the overview of the six steps again or if you have not heard it yet: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2303705/15478024For review, the six steps are:1.Overcome Limiting Beliefs2.Set goals3.Develop a plan4.Build a coalition for support5.Learn from failure6.Celebrate the small winsI also reference Episode 10 – “The Man in the Arena” which is about taking risk and facing criticism. Setting Goals

Send us Fan MailEpisode 18 of Despite the Limits is the third in a series of podcasts exploring practical steps you can take when you feel stuck or simply cannot seem to get started moving toward your dream. In this episode I talk with more detail about step two – “Setting Goals”. Goal setting can keep us from moving forward in our efforts to succeed for a couple of reasons. One reason is because we simply just don’t make them. The other reason, and the focus of this episode is our goals are not expressed in a way we can actually take action on them. That is where SMART goals come in to play.  SMART is an acronym that stands for – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound.Here is a link to Episode 16 – “What to do when you’re stuck” if you want to listen to the overview of the six steps again or if you have not heard it yet here is a link: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2303705/15478024For review, the six steps are:1.Overcome Limiting Beliefs2.Set goals3.Develop a plan4.Build a coalition for support5.Learn from failure6.Celebrate the small winsI also reference Episode 9 – “Drivers Drive” which is all about multitasking. An Axe to Grind

Send us Fan MailThis is episode 15. The summer heat had me thinking about a trip my wife and I took to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula last summer. One memorable part was a kayak trip in Moose Pass, where there is a water wheel with a grindstone and a sign that reads, “Moose Pass is a peaceful little town, if you have an axe to grind, do it here.”I explore how it now appears that society expects us to no longer respect those who disagree with us. What is the impact of this? What can we do? Perhaps more importantly, what should we do?Here is a link to a YouTube video about Moose Pass.Moose Pass: Where the Alaskan Pioneering Spirit Lives On, uploaded by Bjørn Olson on November 22, 2022https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYyvTeWmIyILet’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    Choices, Decisions, and Consequences

Send us Fan MailWelcome to episode 13 of Despite the Limits. In this episode I talk about choices, decisions, and consequences. This idea came from my reflection of the decision to evacuate from Aransas Pass on the Texas coast to escape the potential impact from Hurricane Beryl.  I explore some of the philosophy behind making decisions, why it can be difficult, and why making hard decisions is ultimately good for us. Here is a link to the Ted Talk given by Dr. Mary Steffel, Associate Professor of Marketing, Northeastern University, titled “ How I overcame decision paralysis” This was my initial exposure to the paradox of Buridan’s Ass.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9yDyl_LX4EHere is a link to the Ted Talk given by American Philosopher Ruth Chang, Chair and Professor of Jurisprudence, University of Oxford, titled “How to make hard choices” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GQZuzIdeQQHere is a link to the Thirteen Rules Colin Powell kept on his desk as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as the United States Secretary of State.https://www.state.gov/dipnote-u-s-department-of-state-official-blog/colin-l-powells-thirteen-rules-of-leadership/Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    Cascading Failure

Send us Fan MailIn this episode I talk about cascading failure. What is a cascading failure? It is a failure in a system of interconnected parts where the failure of one-part leads to the failure of other parts and grows progressively until a catastrophic event occurs. Unfortunately, I learned about them because I experienced one while parking my camper recently. While no one was hurt it did provide some opportunity to learn, or relearn some leadership lessons. Here is a link to episode 9 of Despite the Limits – Drivers Drive where I originally discussed the fallacy of multitasking. https://www.buzzsprout.com/2303705/15037490 Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Send us Fan MailI recently had the opportunity to present the commencement address  to the Johnston County Virtual Academy Class of 2024. Given only five minutes to share, I determined I could only make one point so I chose to talk about failure. In this episode, I share the message with you as well as share content that didn’t make it to the platform that day. Failure is not your enemy but something worth seeking out in order to learn. Here is a link to episode 7 of Despite the Limits – Learn a little bit, do a little bit where I first mentioned failure as part of the growth process. https://www.buzzsprout.com/2303705/14875025Here is the link to Ryan Leak’s YouTube documentary “Chasing Failure”.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwj3fI66Dug     Let’s continue the conversation!https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storeyhttps://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ4d

    The Man in the Arena

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I take a look at President Teddy Roosevelt’s famous quote from his speech, “Citizenship in a Republic” better known as “The Man in the Arena” speech. Today it seems easy to not risk doing something we love or take a risk on a new venture, especially in our divided times.  Perhaps considering the words and the life of the United States’ 26th President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt may help us to take a step forward into the arena. Here is a link to some of history and background about President Theodore Roosevelthttps://www.whitehouse.gov/about-the-white-house/presidents/theodore-roosevelt/Christopher Klein published an article about how Roosevelt’s speech in 1912 may have saved his life while campaigning in Milwaukee. ABOUT THIS SHOW
