He is also a storyteller and an advocate of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai's writings.Faran was born to Abdul Ghaffar Tabassum, a renowned Sindhi poet whose work inspired artists like Abida Parveen, contributing significantly to Sindhi literature and Sufi music.His passion for music, design, and the arts stems from a family culture that deeply valued poetry and artistic expression. #59 - Natasha Baig - Sufi Rock Queen from Hunza Valley
In this episode of the A for Aleph podcast, we had the honour of welcoming Natasha Baig, a versatile Pakistani singer-songwriter from Hunza Valley, celebrated for her powerful vocals and known for her unique blend of Sufi rock and folk styles. Despite having no formal music education, she grew up listening to mainstream artists like Abida Parveen and Michael Jackson. She began her career in 2013 as a contestant at the 'Cornetto Music Icons' TV show, as one of the six finalists, who were mentored by Zoe Viccaji. Particularly, her performance of "Dekha Na Tha" by Alamgir was praised.Soon after, she joined sufi fusion ensemble Sounds of Kolachi, as a one of the singers. She later left to pursue a solo career with her own band, including her brother Sameer Baig on guitar who was also the producer for most of her music. Natasha gained prominence with her Burushaski tune "Ya Maula," a powerful Sufi anthem. This song propelled her into the spotlight, where she quickly became recognized for her commanding stage presence and emotive performances. During this time has performed at notable music festivals across Pakistan. In 2016, Natasha co-founded the production company & record label Laal Series, a platform dedicated to promoting socially conscious music. Her contributions to Pakistani film and television further broadened her appeal, with her song "Jhoom Le" from the movie "Janaan" earning her a Lux Style Award nomination. She has also lent her voice to the OSTs of popular TV dramas such as "Jhooti," "Naina Aur Tum," and "Kahani Raima Aur Manahil Ki." In 2018 she was featured on the Coke Studio Sessions along with the legendary Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad Qawwal, performing 'Jawab-e-Shikwa' written by Allama Iqbal to critical acclaim. Natasha has released a significant amount of singles including two full-length albums which include Zariya (2020) and Khirad (2022) which is a tribute to Allama Iqbal. The band gained fame after winning Pepsi Battle of the Bands Season 2 in 2017. Zair has been instrumental in the band's success, contributing to popular tracks like "Kaaghaz Ka Jahaaz" and albums such as "Khwaab" (2020) and "Zindagi" (2023). #57 - Zohaib Kazi - Producer, Director and Author
In this episode of the Aleph podcast, we had the pleasure of having Zohaib Kazi in the studio - a versatile producer, director and author who has gained prominence for his innovative approach to music and storytelling. Zohaib’s journey into Pakistan’s music industry started when he joined Frequency Media working under Rohail Hyatt, this production company was responsible for producing Coke Studio Pakistan which Zohaib later joined as a general manager and associate producer from 2009 to 2017. As someone with both an audio and video skillset, Zohaib was involved in many aspects of the production over the years - this culminated in him being asked to co-produce Season 11 with Ali Hamza in 2018. Zohaib first gained attention with his digital album Butterfly in Space in (2012) and later released his concept album & graphic novel Ismail Ka Urdu Sheher which earned him widespread acclaim. The novel tells the story of a scientist named Ismail and his journey to connect with an alien civilization. The album’s narrative depth and unique blend of music and visual storytelling established him as a forward-thinking artist in Pakistan's music industry. He has also produced a trilogy of music travelogues, starting with "Fanoos" and "Coke Studio Explorer" and culminating with "Gulistan” which is in the process of being released currently. #56 - Saif Samejo - The Sketches, Lahooti Melo and Social Activism
In this episode of the Aleph podcast, we dive into the story of Saif Samejo, best known as the founder and lead vocalist of the sufi band The Sketches, and also as the founder and force behind the Lahooti Melo festival. He has been instrumental in promoting Sindhi culture and language through his music. He is also involved in various cultural, social initiatives and environmental preservation initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting the heritage of Sindh and the livelihood of its people. Saif pursued English Literature at the University of Sindh, which has influenced his musical journey. He is celebrated for his efforts in preserving and promoting indigenous Pakistani music and instruments. In 2013, he launched the 'Lahooti Live Sessions', a weekly event that brings together musicians from the country to perform live music. This initiative led to the establishment of the Lahooti Music Aashram in Hyderabad/Jamshoro in 2014, Pakistan's first dedicated music school. The Aashram offers instruction in both traditional Pakistani and Western instruments.Saif’s work has garnered significant recognition, including the Latif Award from the Government of Sindh. His journey into the world of music started in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia, where he, along with childhood friends Farooq Rauf, Ashraf Ansari, and Shehzad Hussain, formed the band "Arena." Their humble beginnings involved composing music and recording it on cassette recorders.Nabeel's pursuit of music led him to Karachi, where he honed his guitar skills under the mentorship of Faraz Anwar. Despite his family's emphasis on education, Nabeel managed to balance his academic and musical passions.Further educational pursuits took him to the United States, where he explored Western classical music and continued to nurture his musical talents. Returning to Karachi in 1998, he crossed paths with Kami, a prominent music producer, who recognized Nabeel's talent and encouraged him to pursue a professional music career in Pakistan.Nabeel's collaboration with Kami led to various musical projects, solidifying his reputation as a gifted musician. He also recorded guitars for Junaid Jamshed's album, "Dil Ki Baat," marking a departure from his rock roots.His partnership with vocalist Farooq led to the formation of 'Raag,' and the two quickly found musical synergy. Their collaboration ultimately birthed the band "Aaroh." Aaroh entered 2002’s inaugural Pepsi's Battle of the Bands competition, emerging as winners after a thrilling showdown with Entity Paradigm.The release of Aaroh's debut album, "Sawaal," in 2003, propelled them to stardom, selling over a million copies nationwide. Nabeel's journey is a testament to his remarkable musical talents, determination, and unwavering passion for music. Today, he resides in Dubai, balancing a successful career in IT with his musical pursuits under the name 'Nabeel Nihal Project.' #49 - Schehzad Mughal - Singer, Guitar Player, Composer & Popstar
In this special episode of the Aleph Podcast, we delved into the world of Schehzad Mughal—a virtuoso whose talents span across singing, songwriting, guitar playing, composing, and acting, making him a standout figure in the Pakistani music scene. Born in 1965, Schehzad's musical voyage truly began to gather momentum in the late '80s, but it is his solo career that has etched his name into the hearts of music aficionados.Schehzad Mughal has played an active part in the Pakistani music industry since 1987 when his band Final Cut was making waves as the pioneering heavy rock band of Karachi. Originally starting as a guitar player, Schehzad made up one-half of the two-pronged lead guitar lineup in Final Cut alongside Rizwan Khan. In the early 90’s he joined the band Arsh as their lead vocalist, with guitar extraordinaire Adnan Afaq they released an album ‘Saraab’ in ’93. These bands were just the prelude to a remarkable solo journey that would see him emerge as a beacon of musical innovation and expression. His debut solo album, 'Bhoolay Na Kabhi,' was a treasure trove of hits that resonated deeply with listeners, featuring classics such as, ‘Bhoolay Na Kabhi’ and 'Yeh Tou Phir Bas'. These songs not only showcased his versatility as a musician but also his profound ability to connect with the audience on an emotional level. His second album 'Jhoom Lay' featured his biggest hit ‘Bus Yunhi,’ this song stands out as a testament to his craft. Notably, the music video for this song is recognized as Pakistan's first video to be shot in a single take, employing slow-motion and real-time synchronization techniques. This creative approach to video production made it a subject of considerable attention and discussion. Combined with Schehzad's melodic brilliance, sweet melody, and lyrical depth, which made it an iconic song that transcends time, cherished by fans new and old alike. His album was released through Indus Music Records in 2002, which further solidified Schehzad's place in the industry, introducing fans to new anthems, and reaffirming his status as a musical virtuoso. Beyond his albums, Schehzad's forays into acting and his contributions as a session artist with Arid Zone & Aaroh, including his time at VCI records as an A&R director and his works as a composer for TV scores highlight the breadth of his artistic talents, showcasing his ability to excel across multiple creative domains.Currently, Schehzad Mughal is working on his eagerly anticipated new album. In this Episode of Aleph Podcast, we had the pleasure of hosting the multitalented Faraz Waqar Haider, also known as Faraz Haider. He was the lead singer of the band "Andher".In 2010, he began his solo career in music and released his debut album 'Andher' followed by 'Naya Jahan' in 2014. His latest album 'Playroom' came out in 2021 which is heavily influenced by industrial rock. Apart from music, Faraz has worked on several films including 'Conflict' for which he composed music. He directed a short film called 'Orphic' which was his first attempt as a filmmaker. Faraz has made cameos in films like 'Project Ghazi' and 'Sentinel Jet'. Currently, Faraz is working on a feature film, also called 'Playroom', loosely based on his music album of the same name. In this Episode of Aleph Podcast, we had the opportunity to trace back time with Rizwan Khan - Lead guitarist from the band FINAL CUT, the leading band in Karachi’s underground scene in the late 80’s. Rizwan was considered to be one of the best guitar players in the local circuit of Karachi and was at the forefront of the musical renaissance in Pakistan - Rizwan has worked on known tracks such as 'Mein Chaldia' & 'Dastaan' alongside his band members Schehzad Mughal and Azam Riffat. They first appeared on television in 1989, rising to fame. E-Sharp were the finalists of Pepsi Battle of The Bands (2019) with two nominations on The Lux Style Awards, With Ahmed Zawar as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player. Notably, E-Sharp are the only Pakistani band to have produced an album with as many as 21 songs. Ahmed is also founder of Funkaarpur - a recording studio and creative space for musicians and artists. In this episode of the Aleph Podcast, A For Aleph Founder Umair Dar had the pleasure of inviting national sensation, songwriter and singer, Asfar Hussain from the band “Bayaan”. Asfar shot into the public eye after appearing in the first season of Nescafé Basement, 2012. The conversation is about Asfar’s journey from Chitral into the Pakistani music industry starting from his childhood to what he is doing currently. Umair Dar gets into the details of Asfar’s musical endeavors, inspirations, achievements and future plans. Growing up in the picturesque mountains of Chitral, where folk music and story telling through poetry is deeply rooted in the culture, Asfar spent his childhood observing his family friends and relatives singing the verses of his poet father in the musical get-togethers - Mehfils. Meanwhile, his elder brother played the Chitrali sitar. Asfar has been singing since he was in the 7th grade. He took the centre stage for the first time during his college days. While auditioning at his college, NCA for a show, the producer Zulfiqar Khan discovered him in 2012. Asfar Hussain is the vocalist of the band ‘Bayaan’. The band formed after its members met in the music reality show, Nescafé basement. However, the band really struck stardom after winning the Pakistani music competition TV series ‘Pepsi Battle of the Bands’ (2018). It was Asfar Hussain who came up with the name Bayaan, which translates into a narrative. The conversation is about Irfan’s journey into the music industry starting from his childhood to what he is doing currently. Umair Dar gets into the details of Irfan’s musical endeavors, inspirations, achievements and how it’s been for him working on different projects recently. Irfan Ali Taj is a musical story teller. A Singer, Songwriter, Composer, Producer and a multi-instrumentalist from Chitral. A culturally rich and diverse district of KPK in Hindukush in the North of Pakistan. He plays the Rebab or Rubab, this instrument independently spread via the Islamic trading routes over much of North Africa, Middle-east and Europe. Irfan’s music derives from rich cultural sounds of Chitral and modern sounds of the city. His work is mostly written in Khowar (کهووار), also known as Chitrali, an Indo-Aryan language of the Dardic group spoken in northern Pakistan. ‘Kho' means the people of Chitral, "War" means language. The core of his artistic experiments lies in the fusion of these two styles of music, bringing the peaceful music of the north to the world.For the last 7 years Irfan has been making original music in Khuwaar (native language of Chitral) as well as in Urdu and Persian to entertain, educate and create awareness through his art. Irfan not only seeks to promote the poetry and music of the mountains but also the folk instruments and the local culture. His music has pioneered and paved the path for contemporary art forms in Chitral and gave a new direction to the music of the Pakistani north. His work so far has been recognized all over the world by people like Micheal League from Snarky Puppy and through the support of numerous international patrons Irfan has also been featured in a BBC editorial and recognized in South Asia Magazine. Irfan’s latest album Mahal, which was released almost a year ago is a collaboration of northern folk, jazz and blues music in the mainstream Pakistan music scene. The sound, instruments and language used in this album are original, experimental and contemporary. Irfan has successfully established his own new sound with fresh tunes and unique blend of folk and modern instruments. His work has been vital in giving a new direction to folk music of Northern Pakistan and many of the young artists takes inspiration from his work and craft. His music takes inspiration from sounds of Chitral and his exposure of the city after moving to Karachi. His album 'Mahal' featuring Anas Alam Khan & Aziz Kazi, takes you on a musical & cultural journey of Pakistan with local folk instruments like the Rubab & Chitrali Sitar fused with modern instruments like the drums, bass, guitars to preserve the ancient language Khowar spoken in the northern region of Pakistan. Irfan is recently working on a new venture ‘Intimately Unplugged’ where he calls different musicians from all over Pakistan to interact with their audience and give them an experience of most intimate ways with a single instrument but full of emotions and purity. In this episode of the Aleph podcast, A For Aleph Founder Umair Dar hosts renowned musician and actor, Junaid Khan. During the third year of his Engineering degree from UET, Junaid was auditioned by and then recruited by the band ‘Call’, after which they released their first song, “Nishaan”. The success of the single catapulted them to instant stardom in the music scene, making them mainstream artists; they went on to perform at various prestigious events in Pakistan and internationally and released their first album, Jilawatan (2005) to much commercial success. Junaid has also lent his musical talents to brands such as Ufone, Pepsi and McDonalds to create jingles and advertisements. While also having worked on OSTs for Pakistani dramas such as Matae-Jaan, Yahan Pyar Nahi Hai, Ye Mera Deewanapun Hai and Bin Roye. His vocals have added life to many OST’s of his projects such as Natak, Marzi and Sun Yara.Whilst it was music that brought him the initial fame, having a strong foundation in theater during his student days is what called him to pursue acting aswell. Khan later rose to prominence for his acting. He is well known for his roles, in various TV series prominently Sun Yaara (2017), Ishq Tamasha (2018) and Yaariyan (2019). The conversation is about Jon’s journey into the music industries starting from his childhood to what he is doing currently. A for Aleph Founder, Umair gets into the details of Jon’s musical endeavors, inspirations, achievements and how it’s been for him working on different projects and bands recently. Jon Saville, born in Karachi is among the legendary musicians of the city and is one of the pioneer jazz piano and keyboard players in Pakistan as well as a producer, composer, arranger, and teacher. Apart from being a virtuoso Pianist, Jon is also a multi-instrumentalist, that excels at guitar & bass. Also played the Clarinet and Sax at the early age of 7, but did not really pursue the path of wind and reed instruments. Indulging in a variety of music styles from western classical to country, blues, progressive rock & jazz, Jon has ventured through almost every genre and has adapted and moulded his own playing with influences from Modern Jazz, Funk, Fusion, Bop, Smooth Jazz, and Latin-Jazz. He won the UNESCO International Jazz Day in 2013. He has played with top names in the Pakistani music industry including Najam Sheraz, Milestones, Aamir Zaki, Abbas Premji, Louis 'Gumby' Pinto, Brain Masala and is featured on Mizmaar's first album. Currently, Jon Saville teaches music and heads the department of Piano & Keyboards at the Arts Council Karachi, Karachi. His latest project is Surkhwaab, a south-asian classical fusion group that mixes ragas with blues & jazz arrangements. #18 - FARAZ ANWAR - Living Legend
In this episode of The Aleph Podcast, A For Aleph Founder Umair Dar invites a man that is considered one of the most important guitar players and musicians in Pakistan's History, Faraz Anwar.Faraz Anwar started his music journey at the age of six, when he saw Yngwie Malmsteen, the Swedish guitar virtuoso on the TV for the first time. This led him to pick up the guitar as his main instrument. Mentored by another Pakistani great guitarist, Adnan Afaq and inspired by the likes of Allan Holdsworth, Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse & John Petrucci along with the aforementioned Malmsteen. Faraz started playing guitar in 1990, he then went on to do session guitar work as a recording artist as well as in their live bands with a some of the legendary musicians and bands from Pakistan including Ali Haider, Junoon, Fakhr-e-Alam, Junaid Jamshed, Sajjad Ali, Strings, Noori and Nadeem Jaffri to name a few. His first international live performance was with Sajjad Ali for his album Babia. In 1996, while he was in Pakistan, he sent his instrumental demo tapes to ‘Berklee College of Music’, Boston, resulting in winning him scholarship but due to some personal issues he could not go. Later as an acknowledgment, they presented him with “Outstanding Musical Achievement Award”.Apart from his work as a session player, Faraz Anwar formed the Pakistani Progressive rock outfit Mizraab, in which he was the composer, producer, guitarist and lead singer. The band released their debut experimental album ‘Panchi’ in 1998, and went on to release Maazi Haal Mustaqbil in 2004, getting significant airplay on local and international music channels and thereby garnering a significant fan base. In 2001, his solo instrumental album “Abstract Point of View” was released on Gnarly Geezer Records, founded by his hero Alan Holdsworth. Also in 2004, Faraz, joined forces with Babar Sheikh to form metal band “Dusk”. The band toured Czech Republic and performed 13 concerts in few parts of Europe in 2006/2007. Faraz has also made multiple appearances in Coke Studio - the first time was in 2011 when Faraz performed "Kuch Hai" with his band Mizraab. In 2014 Rohail Hyatt again invited him to play in a song “Malhar” followed by another performance of his song "Ujalon Mein" in 2017, season 10.Most recently Faraz has been focusing on his solo career and released the album 'Ishq Ki Subah' in 2020, followed by the concept album 'Tale of the Lunatics' in 2022. In this episode of The Aleph Podcast, A For Aleph Founder Umair Dar has the pleasure of hosting, Muhammad Aizaz Sohail; singer, educator and composer, of the highest order. Born in 1987, Karachi, Aizaz started singing from a very young age and has developing a keen understanding of the intricacies of music. Aizaz is a trained singer in eastern classical music and is now a renowned teacher himself. He is well known for his appearances in Pakistan Superstar and Pakistan Television Corporation’s program “Firdous-e-Gosh”Aizaz started his vocal training under the guidance of the very acclaimed ghazal singer, Tina Sani and later began formal Classical training from Master Abdul Rauf. He was also a student of Ustad Faheem Mazhar in Lahore and was simultaneously taking help for vocal training from Anol Chatterjee, a senior disciple of Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty.Aizaz has also performed in both the Lahore and Karachi chapters of the All Pakistan Music Conference, alongside many fusion-based collaborative projects. The songs ‘Paimona’ & ‘Chal Diyay’ were featured in the popular Pakistani music television series Coke Studio Season 2 which was widely appreciated worldwide and helped solidify Zeb & Haniya's reputation as innovative Pakistani musicians who seamlessly blend various cultural and Western musical influences.After the duo's hiatus in '14, Haniya went on to explore her solo career, studied production & engineering, composed music for films, and produced records for other artists as well.
