Afroturn

What are the lasting effects of the, as it is often described in history books? Out of the 54 countries in Africa, only Ethiopia and Liberia were not formally colonised, and Liberia itself was established by formerly enslaved people returning from the Americas. What has this history meant for African identity, economies, ways of life, and ways of thinking? This podcast explores these questions through the lens of the Afro turn. In academic terms, a “turn” refers to a significant shift in perspective—when new ways of thinking reshape how a subject is understood. The Afro turn places Africa and people of African descent at the centre of analysis, rather than viewing them through primarily Western frameworks. As global perspectives begin to shift—both in how the West sees Africa and how Africans see themselves—we invite you into thoughtful and sometimes difficult conversations about African identity in all its complexity, challenges, and beauty.

    The tough conversations

In the pilot episode of Afroturn, we meet hosts Maqbul—a seasoned Kenyan radio and television personality—and Pat, a Zimbabwean media professional and researcher. Together, they dive into the difficult conversations surrounding identity in post-colonial Africa. This episode introduces the concept of a "turn": a paradigm shift in how Africans perceive their continent by peeling away Western lenses and addressing the deep-seated roots that continue to shape today's generations.Favourite quotes from the episode: " Midlife crisis is literally identity trying to crack open.""The aliens don't have anyone else's address except the US""Now people are being more authentic, dropping Christian names and going with their traditional African names""These are conversations that we must have. Regardless of your opinion or where you're coming from, know that we are, at the end of the day, trying to have the same conversation and move in the same direction, which is for all of us in this continent."
