As you climb higher, the village appears with its white houses with red roofs contrasting with the green of the fields that surround it. The winter light, lower and golden, bathes the landscape, highlighting the contours of each building and the winding outlines of the coast. A luz de inverno, mais baixa e dourada, banha a paisagem destacando os contornos de cada edifício e os recortes sinuosos da costa. ENG As the drone approaches the coast, the Mira River estuary becomes the dominant feature. The line where the river meets the ocean is a spectacle of transition, with gentle waves that mix with the sweet flow of the Mira. On the banks of the river, small, colorful boats stand still, swaying almost subtly, as if patiently waiting for spring to return to the sea. Portuguese PT Assim que o drone se aproxima da costa, o estuário do rio Mira torna-se a característica dominante. A linha onde o rio encontra o oceano é um espetáculo de transição, com ondas suaves que se miaturam com o fluxo doce do Mira. ENG The beaches, although without tourists, have a timeless beauty. In the golden sand we can find pieces of shells and wood brought in by the tide. The cliffs, which rise steeply along the coast, show their geological layers with stunning clarity, with each layer telling the story of thousands of years of erosion and deposition. ENG Back in the village, the houses are arranged in narrow streets, many of them deserted, reinforcing the feeling of winter calm. The typical Alentejo houses, with white facades complemented by blue or yellow bars, display a simple and well-kept beauty. In the center, the main church stands serenely, surrounded by small gardens and benches where, occasionally, you can see someone enjoying the slower pace of the season. As casas tipicas alentejanas, com as fachadas brancas complementadas por barras azuis ou amarelas, exibe uma beleza simples e bem cuidada. The transition between land and sea is gradual, but the contrast between the textures (the soft sand and the green fields) enriches the visual composition. This centuries-old village stands out for its impeccable preservation and the invitation it offers visitors to a true journey through time. The structure was built in the 12th century and still retains its medieval essence, evident in the small and narrow streets, the robust granite houses and the imposing walls that protect it. The Castle dominates the top of the village, offering incredible views of the surrounding landscapes. The village's architecture is a harmonious mix of functionality and beauty, with ornate Manueline-style doors and windows that testify to the rich history of the place. From above, the village reveals itself as an impressive medieval mosaic, framed by exuberant nature. The drone initially captures the circular shape of the walls that surround Sortelha, a typical feature of medieval fortifications, where each stone seems to tell stories of protection and resistance. As it gains altitude, Sortelha Castle becomes the protagonist of the scene. Situated at the highest point, the castle rises majestically with its tower, offering an imposing view. From this perspective, it is possible to notice how the structure dominates the entire village, emphasizing its strategic function at the time it was built. The narrow and winding streets appear like veins of stone between the granite houses, revealing the harmonious pattern of the local architecture, with roofs in earthy tones contrasting with the gray stones of the buildings and small gardens and flower pots spread throughout the village that add color and life to the scene. It was necessary to wake up very early to obtain the records that I share with you today, but as you will understand below, this scenario is not solely due to the time of day but mainly to the particularity of the local geography. The city of Chaves is located in the extreme north of Portugal, in the well-known Tâmega valley, which consists of a tectonic and fluvial depression of notable geological scale. Despite the intense fog, it is possible to visualize the intricate composition of the contrasts of the river plains that coexist with the circumspect slopes, shaped by erosion and tectonic activity over the millennia. The various mountains that surround this natural amphitheater act as guardians of this microclimate so typical of the region, helping to preserve the dense vegetation and fertility of the land. Portuguese PT Hoje volto a partilhar mais um registo visual efetuado com o Drone numa das minhas visitas à cidade de Chaves. Foi necessário acordar bem cedo para obter os registos que hoje partilho convosco, mas como entenderão de seguida, tal cenário não se deve unicamente à hora do dia mas principalmente à particularidade da geografia local. A cidade de Chaves está situada no extremo norte de Portugal, no conhecido vale do Tâmega que consiste numa depressão tectónica e fluvial de notável envergadura geológica. Apesar do intenso nevoeiro, é possível visualizar a composição intricada dos contrastes das planícies fluviais que coexistem com as encostas circunspectas, moldadas pela erosão e pela atividade tectónica ao longo dos milénios. As diversas serras que circundam este anfiteatro natural atuam como guardiãs deste microclima tão típico da região, ajudando a preservar a vegetação densa e a fertilidade das terras. ENG The conditions were right to obtain some unique and quite interesting visual records, mainly due to the aerial perspective that has always fascinated me. The drone took off and slowly moved forward, the camera sensor adjusting to the pale morning light as thick fog covered the entire valley. As he gained altitude, the scenery began to reveal itself, but gradually. The horizon line is diffuse, and the mountains in the distance appear as vague, almost indistinct silhouettes. Down there, everything seems to be submerged, only the highest parts break through the layer of fog, floating like islands in an impenetrable sea. Trees emerge and disappear, their upper branches barely visible, as if trying to touch the surface of the mist. The movement of the fog is slow and dense, sliding over the valley, pushed by a gentle breeze. The most distant slopes remain invisible, hidden by the cloud cover that seems to have no end. Portuguese PT Estavam reunidas as condições para obter uns registos visuais únicos e bastante interessantes, principalmente devido à prespectiva aérea que sempre me fascinou. O drone levantou voo e avançou lentamente, o sensor da camara ajustou-se à luz pálida da manhã, enquanto o nevoeiro espesso cobria todo o vale. À medida que foi ganhando altitude, o cenário começou a revelar-se, mas de forma gradual. A linha do horizonte é difusa, e as montanhas ao longe aparecem como silhuetas vagas, quase indistintas. Lá em baixo tudo parece estar submerso, apenas as partes mais elevadas rompem a camada de nevoeiro, flutuando como ilhas num mar impenetrável. As árvores emergem e desaparecem, com os seus ramos superiores apenas visíveis, como se tentassem tocar a superfície da névoa. O movimento da neblina é lento e denso, a deslizar sobre o vale, empurrada por uma brisa suave. As encostas mais distantes permanecem invisíveis, ocultas pelo manto nebuloso que parece não ter fim. ENG Everything is enveloped in visual stillness, there is no movement or sound other than that of the fog and the drone, and the occasional car that passes by on the narrow roads that wind through the mountains. On a previous occasion I had the opportunity to create an article where I shared some aerial photos along with a geographical and historical description of this fantastic place. Today I'll make a small introduction accompanied by the video, also taking the opportunity to test this platform that I've known for a long time but never had the opportunity to use, especially because I usually work more with photos than videos. On the top of a once strategic mountain, stands this place known as Citânia de SAnfins, that was once the glorious capital of the ancient Galicians. Since 136 BC, its imposing walls have witnessed the unfolding of centuries of history, bravely resisting time and adversity. Beneath these ancient stones, the Brácaro people wove their lives in tune with the fertile land and vast skies that protected and guided them. However, the origins of this city are even more remote, dating back to the 5th century BC, when its first fortifications stood like sentinels over the territory. From here, the views are as impressive today as they must have been thousands of years ago, when the city saw the Roman legions arrive. These landscapes bear the echo of epic conflicts, such as the siege imposed by Junius Brutus between 138 BC and 138 BC. and 136 BC, which culminated in the surrender of the Brácaros and the subjugation of the entire Galician territory. Roman rule left deep marks. Among the ruins, it is still possible to glimpse buildings that testify to the administration that Rome imposed here after its victory, remnants of an era of occupation and control that forever altered the landscape and culture of the region. As the centuries passed, the city, which once housed around 3,000 inhabitants simultaneously between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, began to decline, until it was abandoned. Its houses of varying shapes — circular, square and rectangular — reveal a sophisticated organization, a testament to the ingenuity of its former residents. At the end of the 19th century, the first excavations brought to light the historical value of this place, revealing that there was still much to be discovered. Although the layout of the wall has already been outlined, new evidence continues to emerge in the surrounding area, proving that the occupation was even broader than previously imagined. Today, the old path that once surrounded the city can still be walked, offering the visitor a unique experience: stepping on the same soil that witnessed the rise and fall of a people. The ruins, including buildings restored after a devastating fire, are a vivid reminder of this place's grand past. Although much has already been discovered, there are still buried secrets, waiting to be revealed by future generations of archaeologists.
