In the early hours of Sunday 9th June 1996, 25 year old Melanie Hall disappeared after visiting the Cadillacs nightclub in Bath city centre with her boyfriend and two friends. When her family reported her missing on the Monday evening, after being unable to get in contact with her, police immediately launched an investigation, to no avail. 13 years later, her skeletal remains were discovered on a slip road to the M5 motorway. The case of R v R (1991) set legal precedent when the House of Lords abolished the ‘marital rape exemption’, meaning that a husband could be found guilty of raping his wife, something which, prior to this case, had not been the case. Claudia Lawrence, a 35 year old chef from the University of York, disappeared in March 2009. She was last seen and heard from on 18th March 2009. Despite being one of the most high profile & long running missing persons in recent British history, no body has ever been found, and no one has been charged with an offence in relation to her disappearance.The police suspect she was murdered and the case is being treated as such by North Yorkshire police. On Sunday 18th July 2004, the murdered bodies of twins, Claire and Diane Sanderson, were found in Claire’s flat.
