Keeping Up with the Radiologists -- Episode 15: Categorical change in radiology
Nick Bryan, MD, PhD, neuroradiologist and former chair of radiology at University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, remembers 20% cuts and a two-year department lockdown in Episode 15 of AuntMinnie's Keeping Up with the Radiologists podcast. Getting through that unusual era of "financial disaster" meant major changes. People were uncomfortable, Bryan recalls. With host Saurabh (Harry) Jha, MD, Bryan walks through the first moments of uncertainty around the year 2000 as then-Penn President Judy Rodin enacted change that would take Bryan and his colleagues into the creation of Penn Medicine. Beyond the seismic shift into the new era of Penn Medicine, the stories in this episode can be divided into five segments. Each characterizes a type of categorical change that Bryan observed and worked through during his 50 years of practice.

Keeping Up with the Radiologists -- Episode 13: History of radiology Part 1
This episode suggests the future of the radiologist's role is to be determined. Key questions are posed: 1. Why can't we just hire more radiologists? 2. How should utilization be managed? 3. Are the fundamentals of medical practice moving in the right direction? 4. What are the safeguards once the radiology department doors are opened to nonphysicians and nonradiologists? 5. Will radiologists be personally responsible for every word and every pixel in their reports? 6. What is the role of radiologists going forward?

Keeping Up with the Radiologists -- Episode 14: History of radiology Part 2
In this episode, Mitchell Schnall, MD, PhD, with co-host Saurabh (Harry) Jha, MD, takes listeners back to when radiologists spent a lot of their time doing procedures to get images -- myelograms, GI studies, and all sorts of fluoroscopy, that have largely been replaced by high-fidelity, 3D high-contrast imaging between modern CT and modern MR. In 2024, Schnall was appointed to the newly created role of senior vice president for data and technology solutions at the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS). Schnall's promotion followed two terms as chair of radiology in Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine. He now spearheads the health system’s efforts to understand new tools and approaches and determine how best to implement them across UPHS to improve the provider experience, boost health outcomes for patients, and drive efficiency across the health system. His career is one people are told often they can't have.
