The Taif Incident – The Patience and Kindness of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). After preaching Islam for many years in Mecca, and still facing severe opposition from the Quraysh, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) went to the city of Taif to invite the people there to Islam. He took his adopted son Zayd ibn Haritha (RA) with him. But the leaders of Taif refused to listen to him, and instead ridiculed and rejected him. Not only that, they encouraged the slaves and children of the city to throw stones at him so that he would leave the city. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Zayd (RA) were so badly injured that blood started flowing from their feet. Finally, he took refuge in a garden and, in great distress and exhaustion, supplicated to Allah: > "O Allah! I complain to You of my weakness, my helplessness, and my humiliation before these people. O Most Merciful of the Merciful! You are the Lord of the weak and You are my Lord. To whom do You leave me? To a distant stranger who will treat me harshly, or to an enemy whom You have given power over me? If You are not displeased with me, then I do not care about anything else. But Your mercy is easier for me..." At that very moment, Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the great Prophet (peace be upon him) and said that Allah had sent the angel of the mountains. If He willed, the people of Taif would be crushed between two mountains. But the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed mercy instead of taking revenge and said: > "No! Rather, I hope that Allah will raise from their descendants people who will worship Him alone and associate no partners with Him." Finally, the supplication of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was accepted, and after a few years the people of Taif embraced Islam and became strong followers of the Muslim Ummah. --- Lessons from this incident: 1. Patience in difficult situations - The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained steadfast even in the face of difficult hardships. 2. Forgiveness instead of revenge - He forgave those who had wronged him. 3. Hope for the future - He believed that those who did not accept Islam today would one day realize the truth. This incident is collected from the biography (Sirat) of the Holy Prophet and is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
