Hi I’m Zac - Welcome to Belated Binge Harry Potter - in part the story of how a sports fanatic became a potterhead! Because despite growing up through the hype and looking quite a bit like Harry himself - I didn’t read these books until my mid twenties!  Why did I finally read them?? Without going into too many details in the trailer of all places, I’ll just do what most married men get to. Blame my wife! Regardless of who’s fault it is, when I was around 25 a potterhead came bursting out of me like a raging monster in my chest! So I decided to start a podcast, rereading the books and talking about each chapter. A novel concept that only about 1,000 other people were already doing in the Harry Potter fandom at the same time.  Now I discuss it with a bunch of them! We go on each others podcasts and it’s great as I strive to answer some of the hardest hitting questions in the fandom like: What did Dumbledore know and when did he know it? Why does Harry only ever learn 2 spells? Are there any competent adults in the wizarding world - anywhere??? You’ll hear a few sports metaphors giving way to spell puns, deep dives into character motivations, theories and a fairly regular spotlight on our beloved headmaster Albus Dumbledore.  There will be spoilers! We're diving back into the binge of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban with chapter 6, Talons and Tealeaves. We've had some amazing Harry Potter discussions on this podcast, but it's time to binge!As we dive back into the 3rd book, Prisoner of Azkaban, I thought it would be good to reset on where we left off.In the first 5 chapters of POA, Harry has successfully managed to leave the Dursleys, in quite dramatic fashion. He's had a mini vacation in Diagon Alley with a hotel room to himself and all the ice cream he can eat. He's been reunited with the Weasleys and Hermione as well.He's also been seeing a big black dog figure that he later learns is a death omen, found out that Sirius Black, who was convicted of mass murder, has escaped the wizard prison called Azkaban. The DementorHarry Potter is ready to go to Hogwarts! After a ministry car escorts him to the train station and an awkward conversation with Mr. Weasley, he's on the Hogwarts Express and it doesn't matter that there's a convicted murderer out to get him, right? WRONG! Before the train makes it to the school, it's stopped and we're introduced to DEMENTORS! The Knight Bus & The Leaky CauldronHarry Potter is an outlaw now! He's run away from Privet Drive and the Dursleys and he's preparing to go underground. Owl Post & Aunt Marge's Big MistakeWelcome back to the Harry Potter binge! The first chapter of Prisoner of Azkaban: Owl Post follows the same formula that has been established. It's Harry's birthday, he's sad to be at the Dursleys, the Dursleys hate him, luckily he's a magic boy with magic friends from magic school. At some point something happens to make Vernon angry and hate him more and there's something big foreshadowed for a major plot point to come later. Then he goes to sleep. Luckily, this time his friends send him gifts for his birthday! Chapter 2: Aunt Marge's Big Mistake starts to pick up a little bit, but is still pretty quick. Vernon's sister is in town, she's been bullying Harry his entire life because she's a terrible person. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 18 Dobby's Reward We've wrapped up Chamber of Secrets. In this final chapter, Molly and Arthur Weasley get a reunion with their very much not dead daughter Ginny, who's been saved by Harry Potter after nearly being soul sucked by a terrifying teenage Tom Riddle aka Voldemort. Harry explains the plot of the book for everyone with the help of Dumbledore who also eases Harry's concerns about almost being put in Slytherin house instead of Gryffindor, because he still cares about that. Lucius Malfoy shows up with Dobby, who's presence in completely inexplicable aside from "plot reasons." After some witty banter back and forth amongst the 3 of them and some very NOT subtle hints from Dobby along the way, Harry manages to trick Lucius into throwing a sock to Dobby, setting him free. YAY FREE DOBBY! There's a feast, cooked by a bunch of other house elves that are very much not free and Harry drops his digits to Ron so they can talk on the phone over the Summer. That should be entertaining later... Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Heir of Slytherin. Sarah from First Years: A Harry Potter Podcast for adult first time readers of the series is BACK! The first repeat guest on the podcast AND first back-to-back chapter guest! It's time for the main climax, the final showdown, and of course the VILLAIN MONOLOGUE. And nobody can villain monologue like a teenage memory of Tom Riddle. He's not even Voldemort yet (really) and he's got the "I'm the greatest sorcerer in the world" thing down. Harry doesn't stand for that slander though because he knows the head wizard on the cobble street is actually Albus Dumbledore. And lucky for him, that loyalty is enough to bring Fawkes the Phoenix to his aid when it comes time to battle a giant snake with a murder stare, without a wand... Seriously Tom, give him his wand back! There's far more blood and gore than you might expect in a book written for children, and way more 'Harry is a bit slow' than you remember from reading this as a kid. Luckily, Fawkes takes care of the Basalisks eyes for him AND brings him the Sorting Hat. While avoiding a concussion, Harry retrieves the sword of Godric Gryffindor and stabs the Basalisk through the mouth. He then uses his new fang souvenir to do more stabbing (so much stabbing in this chapter), this time through the diary, which kills memory Tom Riddle and, unknowingly to Harry, one of Voldemort's horcruxes. This is a huge chapter with a ton of laughs along the way! Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Chamber of Secrets. I was joined by Sarah from First Years: A Harry Potter Podcast for adult first time readers of the series and we had a blast with this one, making history. The first repeat guest on the podcast! It's the title chapter of the book, so it must be important! Harry manipulates he and Ron's way to the hospital wing where an unconscious Hermione hands over all the plot convenience needed for Harry to figure out the mystery of the book. Armed with the knowledge of the Basalisk, the pipes, his recent brain blast of Moaning Myrtle being the girl who was killed 50 years ago, He and Ron are about to tell Professor McGonogall everything. But, they instead hide in a closet and overhear that Ginny Weasley has been taken to the Chamber by the Heir of Slytherin. Instead of informing the professors of what they've discovered as intended, they later go to find Lockhart who proves to be too incompetent to best a couple of 12 year olds at magic. Again, instead of doing the logical thing, they decide to go hunting for the Chamber of Secrets with a hostage. After a trip down the grossest water slide in history, Lockhart tries to obliviate 2 children, but uses Ron's broken wand and explodes the tunnel instead. Separated from the others, Harry goes on to find the entrance to the Chamber and save the day... Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Chapter 15, Arogag discussion continues as I reveal my favorite foreshadow moments, give and take some house points, and call out what I thought was Riddikulus! Divination: “No, I’m sorry, there’s every chance the attacker might come back to finish these people off. . . .” Hagrid’s hint about the spiders was far easier to understand — the trouble was, there didn’t seem to be a single spider left in the castle to follow. “Sir,” said Malfoy loudly. “Sir, why don’t you apply for the headmaster’s job?” “Ron — that girl who died. Aragog said she was found in a bathroom,” said Harry, ignoring Neville’s snuffling snores from the corner. “What if she never left the bathroom? What if she’s still there?” House points: I’m giving house points to: The car!! 50 points for saving these children from being spider food! Fang 10 points for being a good watch dog! (Who’s a good boy??) I’m taking house points away from: Harry and Ron are both losing 15 for such a stupid idea to go following spiders into the forbidden forest while hogwarts is on lockdown. Arogag is losing 50 for being willing to eat Hagrid friends! That’s not a good friend move! Hagrid is losing 100 for trusting Arogag and nearly sending Harry and Ron to their deaths! I was joined by Fyrebyrd from The Dusty Caldron Podcast to discuss the events in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets chapter 15: Arogag. In this headcanon episode of Belated Binge, I wrap up the discussion from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Chapter 14, Cornelius Fudge by sharing my thoughts on the Expecto Plot-Chango question: What If Harry and Ron DIDN'T let Hermione go off to the library alone when Harry hears the monster? This is my attempt to save Hermione from a giant snake and it goes full on fan fiction! But I couldn't save Penelope Clearwater. Someone had to get petrified after all... Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Chapter 14, Cornelius Fudge discussion continues as I reveal my favorite foreshadow moments, give and take some house points, and call out what I thought was Riddikulus! Divination: “Riddle might have got the wrong person,” said Hermione. “Maybe it was some other monster that was attacking people. . . .” “How many monsters d’you think this place can hold?” Ron asked dully. “We always knew Hagrid had been expelled,” said Harry miserably. “And the attacks must’ve stopped after Hagrid was kicked out. Otherwise, Riddle wouldn’t have got his award.”  “Look at it from my point of view,” said Fudge, fidgeting with his bowler. “I’m under a lot of pressure. Got to be seen to be doing something. If it turns out it wasn’t Hagrid, he’ll be back and no more said. But I’ve got to take him. Got to. Wouldn’t be doing my duty —” “See here, Malfoy, if Dumbledore can’t stop them,” said Fudge, whose upper lip was sweating now, “I mean to say, who can?” “That remains to be seen,” said Mr. Malfoy with a nasty smile. “But as all twelve of us have voted —” Hagrid leapt to his feet, his shaggy black head grazing the ceiling. “An’ how many did yeh have ter threaten an’ blackmail before they agreed, Malfoy, eh?” he roared. “you will find that I will only truly have left this school when none here are loyal to me. This week on Belated Binge, I covered Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets chapter 13: The Very Secret Diary. In this chapter, someone (*cough Ginny cough*) tried to flush a book DOWN A TOILET! Which is not the disposal method I would have recommended. But as plot would have it, *they* chose a toilet in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. One she just happen to be hanging out in. All of this lead Harry to obtain Tom Riddle's diary, which was not what a certain red-headed first year was thrilled to see. This was especially true after he received her singing Valentine. Eventually, Harry figures out how to communicate with Diary Tom, who shows him how Hagrid was framed for killing Myrtle 50 years ago! I also shed some light (Lumos) on a theory I have that IF Harry had kept the diary, Diary Tom wouldn't have had a reason to release the Basalisk on muggle borns anymore. I also make my case for what his plan would have been, once he realized Harry Potter had his diary. This week on the Binge, I covered Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' 10th chapter: The Rogue Bludger. In this chapter Lockhart is max-level incompetent. First in the classroom, but it pays off for the trio to get the potion book they need to launch their Polyjuice Plan into action. And then again following the quidditch match where Harry played dodge the crazy bludger until he broke his arm, but still caught the snitch. Lockhart proceeds to force his magic onto a child who asks him not to and removes all the bones in Harry's arm, landing him in the hospital wing. This is where he reunites with Dobby and witnesses Colin Creevy being brought in petrified. The Chamber of Secrets has indeed been open, again.
